for someone who isn't a big nfl fan, what is the red zone channel, and how does it differ from the nfl channel?
NFL RedZone will basically cover all of the top plays and scoring chances for all NFL games played on Sunday, as they happen. It will cut from game to game as teams get scoring chances. The channel will run from about 12 noon till about 9pm on Sundays during the NFL regular season.
The channel follows a similar format to the "Red Zone Channel" which is part of DirecTV's NFL Sunday Ticket Superfan package, but NFL RedZone is produced by the NFL themselves for cable, whereas the Red Zone Channel is produced by DirecTV for its Sunday Ticket Superfan package.
As an aside, I wish Ben would quit using the DirecTV Red Zone Channel logo when referring to NFL RedZone. NFL RedZone is a different channel entirely and it has its own logo.

An aside to the aside... sorry if my comment came across as condescending and/or douchey. I just get a little touchy about these kinds of minutiae. It's a character flaw.
THE RED ZONE CHANNEL IS THE BEST THING EVER WHEN IT COMES TO THE NFL. PAY WHATEVER THEY ASK!!!
Ahem. Sorry for my enthusiasm, but I've had it the last two seasons and it is fantastic. Watching nine games at once, watching nailbiting endings of games in split screen, never missing a big play... Get the Red Zone Channel already.
I'm looking forward to this as a way to watch out of market games. And honestly, if you are the type of fan who would like this channel, you probably already subscribe to the sports package anyway.
As an eleven year Directv subscriber I would love to have the "Red Zone Channel" via the NFL; without having the high dollar Sunday Ticket package.
I'd be willing to bet this will never happen.
I could justify $50 (for the season) or so compared to $400. I know numerous Sunday Ticket purchasers that spend nearly all of their time on the "Red Zone" channel.
Directv cannot be happy with the NFL having a red zone channel open to cableco's and broadband competing with their own that may or may not have been their brainchild. Not to mention the $4 Billion they paid for exclusivity of Sunday Ticket.
