74 percent of PS3 owners have watched a Blu-ray, but how many have watched two?
Sony may be working to expand the perception of the PS3 as a media powerhouse with half-hearted bundles and new advertising campaigns, but according to SCEA Director of PlayStation Network Operations Eric Lempel, it's already doing quite well in that department. He indicates that 74 percent of all PS3 users have "spent some time" watching Blu-ray movies, with barely a quarter left shunning the machine's high-def creds. Of course, the real question for Sony's sake is how many have gone ahead and purchased some of those fancy discs, a stat that Lempel doesn't share, but regardless we have to think it's time for Sony to stop putting tedious advertisements for Blu-ray players at the beginning of its Blu-ray discs -- we've already got one, you see? It's very nice!

I think what we should ask is the amount of time they spend watching Bly-ray vs. playing Resistance...
I'll go on a whim here and say...74 percent.
Isn't the amount of PS3 owners that own HDTV's under 74%....
This surveys messed up or there are some dumb people out there.
As of August 5, 2009 a recent survey shown only half of PS3 owners own a HDTV...
http://www.ps4talk.com/half-of-ps3-owners-still-use-sdtv-08060056/
So how can 74% have watched a Blu-Ray on their machine?
". . . only half of PS3 owners own a HDTV . . . So how can 74% have watched a Blu-Ray on their machine?"
Answer: not very well
You do not need an HDTV to watch blu-rays, it simply makes them look better on any TV set. How do you not realize this?
Platinum-
You can watch blu-ray in SD. Dumb but possible.
I own like 5 blu-ray movies but haven't purchased one in a year or more. I need to build my collection.
@Platinum_Skeet: "only half of PS3 owners own a HDTV . . . So how can 74% have watched a Blu-Ray on their machine?"
Do you have the mistaken idea one cannot play Blu-rays on an SD TV?
PS3 got component cable and they simply play blu-ray on PS3... Sounds idiotic, because I don't have a PS3 so I just guessing
PS3 60GB (upgraded to 250)
watched Planet Earth (twice), Band of Brothers, Spidy 3.
played mostly, Hot Shot Golf 5 (with the wife), Portal, HL2, TF2 (now playing on STEAM), GTA4, Little Big Planets
daily used to stream media from the Media Server.
I have a 50" Plasma with the PS3 that I bought about a month ago (yeah, nice timing with the slim; but it was only $275 used with a few games)
The day I bought it I started a Netflix account and a Gamefly account. I've watched several more Blurays on it than I've played games -currently have Infamous and Resident Evil 5 checked out from GF. I'd say the hours of Bluray playing and game playing are probably at least even (Although the 14 hours I played yesterday might have swayed that a bit toward the gaming side)
Ever since the PS3 came out my mentality towards it has been that unless there are more than a hand few of killer tittles such as Killzone2, GOW3 and GT5, that all the PS3 would be good to me for is as a Bluray player. Now with the price drop and the Slim, I will be getting it soon.
But seriously, who buys a PS3/360 without an HD receiver? Why would you spend the extra cash to buy a Bluray film and watch it shrunk to standard def on your 10yr old TV instead of getting the DVD version for the movie :|?
How can you watch Blu-Rays on a SD tv when it requires HDCP? Seriously I'm asking, i was always under the impression that with out a DVI/HDMI cable and a HDCP complaint TV you simply cannot watch blu-rays.
Why would people watch Blu-Ray in SD? Because many people got a free Blu-Ray movie bundled with their PS3, or the five free Blu-Ray movie mail-in offer. People are not going to turn down free movies.
@Hemmy
My mistaken idea is finding 24% of people are dumb enough to pay more to watch a HD format on a SD screen with no benefit...
What if they're planning on getting an hdtv? Getting stuff on bluray now would make sense, they'll have the higher quality for when they're able to watch it that way.
No wait, most people aren't going to think that far ahead when it costs more in the short term.
Here's another revelation: you can connect the damn thing to a normal LCD monitor, and then have full HD res, or at least 1680x1050, so then you don't own a 'HD TV' according to the stats but still do better than SD in reality.
platinumskeet: simple, they watch bluray on the ps3, on a standard def tv. No one said it had to be in highdef, they said who watched bluray films.
Makes me feel better for not having an HDTV. Everytime I go to Costco I see carts loaded up with them. Good to know I am not alone.
I think I will get one before the final season of Lost to enjoy it in HD.
Grammar and Vanilla-
I thought HDCP was only relavent with digital connections like HDMI, DVI, etc... so analog transmissions using VGA and component were excluded. I think this it is a HD 1080p/ 720p rule.
Or am I wrong?
They don't need to have HDTV's, they could also be watching them on their monitor's
@Platinum_Skeet:
I didn't have an HDTV when I got my PS3, but I still started my Blu-ray collection and was able to enjoy them just fine. Not long after I purchased a nice HDTV set and I'm since all set in the hi-def game. I've got friends who still own and use SD sets with their PS360s who are in the same boat I was then, they are planning to purchase an HDTV at some point. By your definition our planning in advance was "dumb". So what exactly are you suggesting/whining about? That we have no right to purchase Blu-rays without an HDTV? That since we had/have SD sets, we are only allowed to purchase DVDs? And thus only view DVDs on SD sets? (spending even more money when we want Hi-def versions of those films?)
That smacks of idiocy. Perhaps I'm reading your wrong, however. Care to explain?
And, 24% ?
@Hemmy
"By your definition our planning in advance was "dumb". So what exactly are you suggesting/whining about? That we have no right to purchase Blu-rays without an HDTV? That since we had/have SD sets, we are only allowed to purchase DVDs?"
Perhaps he is missing the fact that you planed to get an HDTV, so you got Blu-Ray movies which you watched on your SDTV and then when the HDTV rolled in, you already had them ready to spin in your PS3.
I am in the same boat. I just got an PS3 and the HDTV will be coming soon. I will probably pick up a couple Blu-Ray movies before then, Costco has a couple good ones for cheap (under $15)
I do agree that at this point if you buy a PS3 for your SDTV and have no plans on getting an HDTV, it is dumb to buy Blu-Ray movies. But I would have to say that 100% of the people in that category (buy a PS3 but do not have to want an HDTV) do not watch Blu-Ray (or at least should not until the prices come down more)
pointless
As pointless as your post.
Agreed, hell is this proving? Or disproving? I guess its for some of the XBOX diehards that swear nobody watches Blu-Rays and it isn't worth it to get a PS3, until they get a PS3 and start watching Blu-Rays
I was agreeing with "gareth" by the way. They don't need to tell us things that we already know.
There is no IPhone news for Engadget to post so they post fillers like this. I noticed most of Engadgets threads go something like this:
1) Iphone news
2) Anti-Sony news
3) Iphone news
4) Random Cellphone appearing somewhere
5) Mac or other Apple product
6) Anti-Sony news
7) Iphone news
8) Random filler news eg: NY Bike Helmets
you forgot the ambiguous pro-Microsoft but it is kinda anti, but it can be read as pro, so lets start a flame war posts!
@mag
You forgot the people that only bought a PS3 to use as a Blu Ray player. I have a game because it came with it. I played a few rental games like MGS4 and Fallout 3 on it. With all the found issues with Fallout 3 and the lack of DLC, I bought it for the 360 instead. I ended up buying a dual shock controller for it as well, but just because the original six-axis that came with a month of owning the system.
I'll bite the bullet here and take one for the team. I say that apart from the 5 free dvd's sony gave me, I have bought about 8 more blue rays. Yes at 29 bucks they are expensive, but hey, when you can splurge, why not splurge on blu-rays? There's nothing like seeing Angelina Jolie in all her 1080p glory.
I buy them on sale and get them for around $20-$23. Also always look at Amazon and dvdempire.com for decent prices. I have about 100 blu-rays, but we rent from Netflix first to see if we want to watch them over and over before we buy. I would say we watch about 15 hours of BD content a week on our PS3.
I buy the 90's sci-fi movies for $10-15. Stuff like Stargate, Terminator 2, Starship Troopers, etc. I'll buy more when one of two things happen:
1) Prices drop somewhat.
2) More modern action, sci-fi type films are shot digitally. Films where a crispy picture makes more of a difference. That may take longer.
I wouldn't mind blu-ray, but I have about 500 movies on dvd, so starting my collection over from scratch wouldn't be very feasible.
The blockbuster near me sells their previously viewed Blu-Ray's at 2 for $25, I like to go in and splurge every month or so, there is nothing like the quality you get from a Blu-Ray disk. I used to be all about the future of Digital Distribution too, and now I am scared that it will lead to a false sense of HD security. A Downloaded HD movie with a 7.5Mbps bitrate is not even comparable to a Blu-Ray with 15-40 Mbps. (Not to mention the crisp uncompressed audio).
I haven't paid over $20 for a Blu-ray in over a year.
You enjoy buying over priced Blu-ray? I've picked up new on Amazon for $13. Their sales are ridiculous! New releases are $23 but that's the price you pay for new releases.
@NocKnock: You can watch DVDs on a BluRay player. Therefore, no one has to replace their current collection. You can hold out as long as you want or only buy movies you do not have in BluRay.
i've got Dark Knight and Wanted, I might get GI Joe in Blu Ray too
Some people want to own their favorite movies and not wait 3 business days for return and delivery. I have Netflix and I buy Blu-ray movies I want to own.
And we should all rent games from Gamefly because 60 bucks for new releases is too much, right? And listen to the radio because it's 24/7 free music? And never buy books? There are some people in this world that enjoy collecting and making personal libraries of various forms of media. Baffling, isn't it?
@Muu
Exactly. Some things I download (oh noes), some things i get on Redbox, and some things I buy (gasp)
Just depends on how much I liked it. I also plan on buying Inglorius Basterds, just prolly not in Blu Ray
I only buy Blu-Rays if it's a movie which has good landscapes or CGI which benefit from being in HD. Stuff like the Dark Knight and No Country. For movies like Hoosiers where it's more the story than the visuals, I wouldn't splurge for BR.
Blu-Ray is definitely the way I go for big event type movies. I also have a couple TV series on Blu-Ray, but to be honest you don't see as much of an improvement there. I think with lower production values there is just not as much to see.
I'm certainly not going to re-buy everything I own on Blu-Ray, but there are a couple movies I would buy again. Aliens will make a kick-ass Blu-Ray that I will buy the moment it goes on sale, for instance.
"i've got Dark Knight and Wanted, I might get GI Joe in Blu Ray too"
You'll find your enjoyment of Blu-ray improved dramatically if you get some good movies rather than Hollywood bilge. Still, there's enough CGI going on in those titles that it seems almost appropriate that they are shown on a PS3 - is it a movie or video game...?
What about the number of PS3 owners that own zero games and use it strictly for Blu-ray?
+1 for me.
I can relate to that too. I have 6 games, but they are just in case I feel a FPS urge. Hasn't happened yet.
+2 for me (mainly coz I already own an xbox and CBF buying more controllers, etc)
Granted I might start to play games on it in a month or so (grid, uncharted 2, GT5, intial d arcade stage)....that would make it about 4 months without games :p
I only own 4 games - 2 came with it (MGS4/Killzone 2), Heavenly Sword ($20 special), and Fat Princess. I pretty much only play Fat Princess now...
I DEFINITELY use it for Blu-ray more than gaming. That's what the Xbox 360 is for.
Of course that's not to say there are a few PS3 exclusives I want to check out - like Little Big Planet
My kids (age 7 & 10) LOVE little big planet!
I would have to call it one of the most creative games in ages as it is completely different than the shoot'm up or battle strategy games that are so popular with older kids.
