TDK stacks 10 layers on a single 320GB disc
Even though we have yet to see the long-hinted 100GB and 200GB prototype Blu-ray discs as real products, TDK is looking beyond that, ready to display 320GB ten-layer platters at CEATEC 2009 that can be read and written with current blue laser technology. Key in stacking so many layers is improving the transmittance of the outermost layer as seen above - that nearly clear one on the right doesn't require a more powerful laser to get through. The only thing we can't see? When or if any of these will actually be released.

I will buy a BD-RW drive if these come out and dont cost too much. I'm sure they'll be expensive tho, like all new technology.
They don't even need to go to 100GB. A 75 GB disc would be fine. 50GB for Video data and 25GB for audio data. Less compression would be used for video.
Even better, just make the audio DD+ (5GB) and the rest for Video (70GB).
Do you own an HD camcorder? More space please!
This will never happen until well after there is a meaningful BD50 storage market. Which there isn't yet. You can get a 1.5TB hard drive for $80. What would you want a 50GB disc for when they cost upwards of $10?
Actually, yes I would. I would like to be able to backup, not everything, but my most precious stuff and store it somewhere else if say, for instance, there's a fire that takes all my equipment out.
And why not just put it on a much cheaper hard drive, then store that?
Pressed blu-ray discs that held more data which would mean less need for multiple discs would be welcome if the reliability was there but I get the feeling we won't see these for a long time.
As for burned media... do blu-rays have the same issues DVD does? That is, you have to use quality media to get a burn that lasts a while (and even those can degrade over time)?
I don't have any BluRay movies bigger than 44GB. Let me buy a stack of 20 Dual Layer 50GB discs for less than $100 and I am in!
Beyond the data storage issue, now that 3D for the home is on the horizon there's a real need for this with movie discs. They'd better start getting these higher-capacity discs out of the lab pronto, because without them, there's a good chance picture quality will suffer on a long movie.
