And some people didn't know it is possible to make an old movie look good in HD, and here Pixar is going back and making 15 year old movies 3D. Evidently Pixar has always thought about how its movies would look in 3D and decided to go back and make it happen with the first two Toy Story movies. The timing is due to the fact that Toy Story 3 is right around the corner, but while fans wait to see it, they can go to the theater and relive the first two like never before. What's interesting is that the original data took about 4 months to convert just to make it compatible with Pixar's current technology, and after that was done, it took another 6 months to convert each movie to 3D. The other interesting nuget is about how the distance between the two cameras help determine how "3D" an image will look -- an interesting read even if you're not interested in 3D.

6 months to convert to 3d? Does that include rendering? Because rendering is what takes the longest on pixar movies. I would have assumed it would have taken well over a year for a regular pixar movie, let alone a 3d pixar movie. Then again, Toy Story 1 and 2 are probably slightly less complex to render than their newer movies.
The only real animator/modeler work I could see would be if the additional camera ether revealed objects not meant to be seen, or empty space that was never meant to be in frame. Although with their large environments, I doubt this would have happened very much.
I'll go check out the article now, seems interesting.
This coming from a 20 year old man:
I'll be honest, I went and saw it with some friends, but it was nothing spectacular. Yeah, add some shadows and it kind of looks better, but overall I was disappointed with the 3d effects.
The preview for the Ghost of Christmas looked much better in 3d, although I know it wasn't made in 2d originally and upconverted.
I saw this on Saturday and Toy Story 2 looked WAY better in 3D than the first one.
Much more depth and shadows along with more detail compared to the first!
What the heck is this language about?!? How am I supposed to understand your usage of English when you say these things?

You must not read Ben's post very often, he uses Benglish not regular English.
HAHA
Just Kidding Ben, A very interesting read no doubt.

While in general I dislike 3D movies, the statement that the distance between the cameras makes a difference in the 3D effect is interesting to me.
I get headaches when I try to watch 3D movies. I've always wondered if it has anythign to do with the size of my head vs the "average size" and the resulting distance between my pupils. I don't have an enormous head, but I'm also not a small person. If the images are at the wrong focal length for a particular viewer, it could make the eye muscles constantly fight to adjust for it. Or at least that's my thinking.

That guy in the pic looks like he has never made love
He's obviously blind, so be nice.
Rendering takes forever lol
Can't wait for Toy story 2!!
