I own a PS3, how do i get one of these discs?
It still uses too much electricity compared to Roku... If saving money means anything to you, that is.
Oh dear god...navigation is horrible on it...also it takes a good 30 seconds to load all the cover art for the DVD's while the 360 does it instantly. I would think that would be the result from using a disk would it? Plus the playback doesn't look as good...I'm watching a Heroes episode, same one I watched last night on my 360 and it doesn't look anywhere near as good...Wonder what the deal with that is? Hopefully it's better fleshed out once they bring out the actual application...
Question:
Can you use this with WiFi? I'm guessing not likely and ordered a CAT6 cable from Monoprice today, but is it possible while I wait?
tia
what you need to use this:
a ps3
broadband internet connection connected to your ps3 (wifi or ethernet)
an active netflix account on an $8.99 plan or up
a netflix ps3 dvd
OK this is what I have:
PS3
WiFi
Netflix
NetFlix Disc
I used it on my Wifi last night and watched two movies perfectly fine. 802.11g on a 5Mb DSL line.
I've received this disc in the mail today.
After popping the disc into the PS3 and clicking on the netflix icon, a page was shown on screen with an activation code.
What I would like to know is whether this means that each of these Netflix discs are meant to be used on ONLY ONE PS3 console?
Like, if I use the code to activate this PS3, does this mean I am no longer able to use this disc on another PS3 console?
Any insight on this is much appreciated!
I love my ps3, but this is so useless for me. I rather go buy the dvd and be done with. The only reason I would stream movies, if it was a hard to find release. I would rather stream shorts, documentaries, instructional, and music videos instead of movies which are readily available on disc. I just hate paying money for a movie and loose everything when the system crashes or stops functioning. But thats just me. If you lose your internet connection then you can't download them again, so its money down the drain.
youd rather go buy each DVD for $15 instead? whats so inconvenient about this? put disc in, steam your queue or browse the other instantly available videos (including documentaries), and watch. What do you mean its money down the drain if you lose your internet connection? You arent saving anything anyways, and whenur connection is back, continue watching. in the mean time you can still get discs in the mail from netflix.
the people bashing this are really stretching for reasons to dislike it. it costs nothing extra, and gives a ton.
Money down the drain? Do you understand that with Netflix, you aren't actually BUYING any of these films? They're just rentals, so your concern seems like a moot point.
I tried Ps3 streaming yesterday and I loved it (this is coming from a former PlayOn user). It worked quick enough for me, the quality was amazing in both HD and SD films depending on the rip. For example, I tried This American Life in HD and it was gorgeous. Similarly though, The Ant Bully was also very nice looking and it was only in SD. There were some ugly ass streams though, but it was because of the bad rip (Empire of the Sun looks like shit AND it was in full frame--a double sin).
As a non-xbox user and somebody who doesn't care about *gasp* getting up to insert a disc to watch a film, I like the service a lot.
I got my PS3 netflix disc yesterday and I gotta say, I like it a lot. This is my only option to stream netflix to my TV right now since my computer is too crappy and old to run a PlayOn server. I watched a couple episods of Lost last night and though the stream is definitly not 1080p or anything, it looks pretty good. I had no problems with buffering or any screen defects at all. It took maybe 10 seconds for the video to start after I pressed play. I do have my PS3 hooked up with a network cable, so I can't vouch for how it does over WiFi. My only slight disappointment is that you can't browse netflix for things to stream, you only have access to the streaming stuff you have placed in your queue.
As far as activating the disc on multiple PS3s, I would think that maybe you can only have it activated for one machine at a time. It appears that the disc is associated with the PS3's serial number. If you deactivated one PS3, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work on another. Of course, you probably could just order another disc if you have multiple PS3s. I would test it out, but I only have access to one PS3 so I won't be doing that.
It's not your ONLY option. The Roku is $100, uses only 5 watts of electricity, won't wear out your PS3, and doesn't require a disc to play Netflix, Amazon on Demand, and a bunch of other channels (soon). It's silent, has a dedicated remote control, and is capable of HD via HDMI or component. It's smaller, lighter, and doesn't get hot.
And, you can watch a movie with the Roku in one room while someone uses the PS3 in another. You don't tie up your gaming device with a movie.
It's cool that they did this, but I still can't see it as better than a dedicated device that beats the PS3 in every category when it comes to streaming Netflix.
Sorry, dude, not true. You can watch any ol' movie right from the PS3. Just go one more step "upward" and you'll be picking all sort of header, and watching movies, too.
Meh it looks very slow. It takes forever to update the queue's and the interface is pretty dull. Hopefully they will fix all that somewhere down the line so the PS3 users can enjoy this experience as much as the 360 users.
The presenter seems to incorrectly report that you can't add to your queue, unless you exit Netflix and go into the browser. On mine, I was able to hit the up directional button to get to the headers and scroll through New additions and all categories to instantly play or add titles to my queue. All without leaving the disc.
If previously mentioned, I apologize, but I'd suggest the editors update the video with the proper info, or update the blog.
This is great, but can I get normal Hulu streaming back, please? Tested it with the proxy-header workaround last night, and it eventually locked up on me.
@ZeroCorpse aka Roku salesman
If you buy me a Roku box then I'll use it. Maybe I should have said this is my only netflix streaming option for my TV without having to spend any more money. I already have a Logitech PS3 adapter, so I don't have to use any special remote for the PS3. I can't argue with the energy consumption part, but I also don't leave my PS3 on when I am not using it. I live alone, so I would have to be really skilled to be watching the roku box at the same time I am playing a game on the PS3 in another room.

It looks like they just ported the Roku software to the PS3.. it looks EXACTLY the same, except with tabs for playing movies not on the instant queue.
Hi,
does anyone have more information about the technical background of this solution? Especially the DRM would be interesting for me. As far as I know Netflix is using Windows Media DRM 10 which is not supported natively by PS3.
So did Netflix re-encrypt all their video content just for PS3?
Or is this task taken by the BD Live feature on the disc?
And if yes, how does this work together with the PS3, as the license key has to be written locally?
Thanks for any hints.
Can anyone tell me why everyone's skin is blue on some movies/shows? At other times, I'm able the color is fine. I'm thinking it's my internet connection because I'm unable to find any information about this.
Xbox wins this round, no disk needed for Netflix fun and I can Netflix with 8 friends.
