You spend so much time trying to buffer the video that you just plain loose interest in watching it. I don't know if it's just my ISP playing around with my connection our YouTube needing to beef up it's infrastructure, but 1080p is just going to make the problem of HD video even worse for everyone.

Plus, who really has the screen resolution to actually use all 1080 pixels? Are they counting on the fact that because the bitrates are so low that 1080p from YouTube may finally outclass 720p with a decent bitrate? I'd rather they improve that than go adding pixels when they're really not needed.

dagamer43

Comments on YouTube going 1080p, already?

My biggest gripe with Youtube's HD is that the video window never changes to actual resolution of the file that is being streamed. Most of the HD is 720, but the video window is at maximum 853x505. What kind of resolution is that? Other video sites do this and it tries me crazy. I often download the file with software or greasemonkey scripts to get 1:1 pixel.

IseWise

Comments on YouTube going 1080p, already?

Uh, not sure what you mean by "screen resolution" but I have a second monitor that's 1920x1200, so to answer your question, I have that resolution. Several of my friends have that resolution. In fact, MANY people have that resolution, so...what's your point?

"Better than the source quality" is almost complete rubbish. Are they going to try and upscale iPhone 3Gs video to 1080 or even 720? For the most part, upscaling doesn't work, so YouTube, just give up right now, and just keep the resolution and even bitrate just like the original and we can agree on that. Okay?

-Brian

Brian Kaempen

Comments on YouTube going 1080p, already?

yeah, only if your internet sucks.

wack

Comments on YouTube going 1080p, already?

I just checked http://www.recastdigital.net/DEMO/ and their HD video looks very good!!! Facebook is moving fast also with it's viral power and recently closed a partnership with a streaming company. YouTube said they will go back and re-encode all previous videos uploaded at that resolution. They are not the first company to achieve that as previous releases have been already tested and released a few months ago. Here is an article talking about this technology with technical details for a better understanding: http://www.thehdstandard.com/hd-broadcaster/
Indeed as Jeff previously commented I am curious how they will solve the buffering issues because I'm losing a lot of time trying to view a video encoded at that standard.
_______________________________________
Catalin
Streaming Consultant
www.eyepartner.com/presentation

cata12
