UK Channel 4 set to throw some 3D programming our way
Sony and Panasonic are both hellbent on convincing us their forthcoming super-duper 3D television sets are the future, but before we all start selling off the children and re-mortgaging our homes, how about a little taster of what it might be like? Channel 4, the British answer to a question nobody ever asked, is about to offer up a selection of 3D programming this month, which it dubs as a return to "good old fashioned fun." The menu includes a documentary about the Queen's coronation (in other words, ancient history), a magic show, and even a couple of goodies like Flesh for Frankenstein and Friday the 13th, Part III. If we find can remember to get down to the local Sainsbury's and grab ourselves a free pair of those rad-looking three-dee glasses, you might even be treated to our eyes-on impressions. Watch this three-dimensional space!

MAN.....THE UK GETS EVERYTHING
... except Hulu...
Yes...yes we do....most of the time it's the bad things though
Except all the precious tax revenue from our tea, stamps, and rum.
NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION, GEORGE!
@ Rob (Work) : Unless you live in D.C., or Puerto Rico, or you are an Astronaut?!
Except the Zune HD!!
They/we also get "chavs", meaning anything good that we can get is almost instantly ruined/trashed/stolen.
@ poke, you just had to mention a Microsoft/Apple product...
@d0m
...because I live in the UK and want to officially buy the Zune HD.
Its just the only thing right now that I would like to buy but can't get the the UK.
That is good cos I live in UK :]
Sorry to hijack the thread, but they just updated the pic with a Photoshopped hockey mask.
I got it now . . . Engadget posts the article (so it's timely) and then comes back later with the Jason-esque Photoshop skills.
Makes sense, I guess.
Am I the only one that doesnt give a Flying 'F' about 3d TV or movies. It sounds completely unnecessary. Granted ive never seen a 3d tv show or 3d movie, but still.
No, your not, I saw "UP" the other say in 3D didn't see the point really, although I must say that I think 3D sport will be awesome, having seen a sample of it at the NFL Wembley Tailgate-party the other week.
It is a novelty - and has you thinking about how 2D films would be in 3D after you have watched your first one, but ultimately doesn't add that much to the experience.
The 3D glasses irritate the muscles around my eyes anyway.
I already have a three-dimensional TV (I checked round the back and it sticks out) - will I still need the 3D glasses?
Yes. Its an analglyphic image. That is to say, its a 2D image with 2 color values for each left and right eye image. It is not a 3D signal.
And by the way - Derren Brown is not a magician, nor are his shows "magic shows". He is a mentalist (yes, like Patrick Jane in that oh-so-clever TV show).
"You just throw some cut-up pantyhose over the screen and it comes on in 3D"
"Channel 4, the British answer to a question nobody ever asked" - couldn't have put it better myself :D
Channel 4, the British answer to a question nobody ever asked - is however probably the best station in this country
And - 'a documentary about the Queen's coronation /(in other words, ancient history)/' - that's a narrow minded comment Engadget...
I think it was thatchers attempt to destroy the BBC and turn UK TV into US-style commercial TV. Unfortunately for her and fortunately for us it was subverted by pinko-liberal producers into something actually quite good and did more harm to ITV. Sadly I think its been mostly rubbish for the last few years.
Polarized or Coloured?
Coloured Amber and Blue.
It's more Browny/Grey & Blue. First time I've seen 3D glasses like these.
ColorCode 3D'd - check it out, they aren't all that bad.
We don't have the Droid yet
motorola or the droid itself isnt really that popular here
I saw this yesterday over at ThirdMagazine.com they are a pretty good resource for 3D-TV stories among other 3D industry news. Virgin Media is pushing a video on demand channel of 3D content.
3d tv is funny the very first 5 minutes.. then it become annoying at best and a big headache at worst.
Sony, Panasonic and the gang hate this kind of thing, surely. It's in their interests for people to forget about the bad old days of 3D, with flaky, monochrome-only technology and gimmick content, not to be reminded.
I think En Vogue said it best: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xpugp6DIb3I
Channel 4 when did I last watch something on it? Well I watch the news because its on at a convenient time, however other than that nothing. Never watch ITV (apart from harry hills TV burp), BBC 1, Channel 5 . BBC 2/3 is ok... just (documentaries, top gear etc) . What happened to our tv programs. All it seems to be is talentless dorks singing these days. (The one with a CRT, VCR and turntable in his pocket!)
I picked up some of these glasses from Sainsbury's and checked out some of the free online content. (There's a good flickr pool). Maybe it's just me, but I find it impossible to focus through the blue side. It just makes everything really dark and blurry. And the whole thing gives me a headache.
Still it's pretty cool - for some reason I can't see 3D in real life so in some ways it is better than real life! Still, I bet the polarized/active shutter ones are massively better - no ghosting and you can actually see colours.
Channel 4 has Peep Show!
And Channel 4 News (usually wins a lot of journalistic awards) and makes the BBC news look like a bad joke.
The 80's themed trailer is pretty cool. Though I'd never chat and peel the stickers off rubik's cube

I'm showing my age here, but I can remember seeing Friday 13th 3D at the cinema with the little red/blue specs. There was a run of 3D movies at the time, I remember Jaws 3D and some Sci-Fi one with a young Molly Ringwald in it, "Adventure In The Forbidden Zone" or something like that. Most of these have been on TV over the years just as movies and they always look a little strange when they have the obvious 'poking out of the screen' shots. Can anyone remember the BBC 3D bits, quite a few years ago now I think. That just used a darker lens over one eye, so the scene was full colour, and then the scene had to pan or rotate in a particular direction, left to right or right to left, I can't remember which. The darker lens made the brain delay the image so it would see an image slightly delayed, therefore in a slightly different position to the other, giving the stereo images.
Oh, yes, I remember Jaws 3D and some Sci-Fi one with a young Molly Ringwald in it, "Adventure In The Forbidden Zone" or something like that. it impossible to focus through the blue side. It just makes everything really dark and blurry. Supply various sports shoes, like Jordan Fusion,Jrodan 01-14 retro, nike airforce one, obama shoes ,pls read here http://www.tradertrade.com
Please stop this red and blue glasses crap. You're giving 3D a terrible name.
If they have to air TV shows in movie theaters to eliminate these color killing glasses, so be it.
I think Channel 4 should just buy us all 3D LCDs, "just think Mr. Channel 4 CEO, all those ratings you would get" XP
This appears to be ColorCode 3D and not regular red/green Anaglyph - nicer picture, better colours.
I think this is a good step forward
