The article in question is a prime example. He says he tested image retention and burn-in on various 2008 and 2009 plasmas but doesn't cite model numbers or even brands. He even states that he did the tests for 10 hours and says that no burn-in occurred. What about image retention? How long did that take to disappear after that 10 hour test? A lot of people would count IR as burn-in if it was still visible for a few hours.

He should man up and leave a static screen on a plasma for a few days. Heck, a few hours every day for a month would be fine. I work in the electronics industry and visit many stores on my job. I've seen burn-in and image retention. I know the difference.

Some burn-in examples:
-Store A: 2007 Panasonic 50" plasma showed visible burn in after running the Experience Blu-ray 2.0 disc for a few months (BD logo visible in lower right corner). Much less visible after a few weeks of running different material. Eventually sold to a customer.
-Store A: 2008 Panasonics were much better, similar run time, but no visible burn-in with that demo. No burn-in seen, all demo units sold.
-Store B: 2008 Samsung 50" plasma showed visible burn-in after running the Soundstage Blu-ray Seal concert for a few months (yes, this is at Sears). BD menu clearly visible. Ran the white wipe for a couple of days and it was still visible, although improved. Did not re-visit the store for a week and it was gone when I returned. Ultimate status: unknown.
-Store C: 2009 Panasonic 42" plasma will show visible (but faint) image retention after running a Blu-ray menu for a few hours (Road Trip and High School Musical 2 are usually running unless it's the Pana demo BD). No permanent burn-in so far. Status: on going.

Willen

Comments on The HD Guru tries to burn-in a plasma, but fails

You mean I don't have to keep my LCD HDTV in stretch mode to avoid burn-in? I have to take issue with this "test." I laughed and rolled my eyes when I saw it.

I think it rather interesting that 10 hours seems to be thought a credible burn-in test.

A friend of mine got a 65" rear projection TV a few years back. His kids watched the Disney channel for hours a day on that set over a several month period. It burned the Disney logo into the tube. Exactly how long it took for the burn pattern to be visible, I do not know. The point being it was likely months of several hours a day before the burn pattern was evident.

Personally, I highly doubt that even a tube TV would permanently burn-in on just 10 hours of exposure to the same image unless it was in bad shape already.

What would I consider a credible burn in test? Say 500 hours minimum, but I think it would be something like one to two percent of the expected lifetime of the set.

Since you do not seem to mind the possibility of killing a perfectly good set, why not run it for say six or seven months straight? Somewhere around seven months, you'll have about 5,000 hours of run time on it. If it has not burned by then, report it to us.

Until then, though, please do not try to pass off 10 hours as a credible burn-in test. Heck, any credible set manufacturer would run a manufacturing burn-in test run after it is produced for at least 72 hours continuously - and maybe even with the same image displayed for the entire test run.

When I see things like this, I question my wisdom of visiting a site like this.
