So you pay $200 for the box, then you pay $5/mo to lease it, $10/mo to activate HD service, $6/mo to activate DVR service and $5/mo for repair/replacement service. That's $26 in monthly charges to use a box you paid $200 for... and you have to return the box if you end service! Adding insult to injury, you have to maintain service under these terms for 24 months otherwise you will incur a $480 ETF (not pro-rated.) And any changes in service (such as adding or removing packages) will renew the contract.

It's outrageous. They've basically combined all of the consumer "downsides" of service contracts (long-term agreements, leased equipment, service fees) without offering any of the "upsides" to justify them (no startup costs, free repair/replacement and/or equipment ownership.)

UnnDunn

Comments on Poor customer service earns DirecTV a lawsuit in Washington State

@UnnDunn I should mention that they do offer first-time customers free installation and waived "lease upgrade" and lease fees for the first receiver, but still... there is no justification for it.

UnnDunn

Comments on Poor customer service earns DirecTV a lawsuit in Washington State

@UnnDunn DirecTV charging for an HD DVR was to follow Dish Network's business model. In America the market is quite corrupted, and is merely set up to take advantage of consumers moreso than create a vibrant marketplace(ironically, which will help them stay in business). Sure you have some stand-up companies out there, but there are way too many that feels the need to jack people left and right.
