This is according to the 3D@Home consortium. The vast majority of Blu-rays are encoded in 24fps anyway, so it really won't be a "problem" until we go to 30 or 60 hz encodings.

-Pie

EatingPie

Comments on Sony's Blu-ray players do 3D in 1080p even with HDMI 1.3

@EatingPie

Andy Parsons from the BDA told me that the BD spec only includes 1080p 24 3D, if you want to go 60, you have to switch to 720p.

Ben

Comments on Sony's Blu-ray players do 3D in 1080p even with HDMI 1.3

@BenD

Great citation! You buy it because it plays BD's, DVD's (unconverted), CD's, SACD's, etc. Not to mention, the streaming options from Netflix, Amazon On Demand, Pandora, Slacker, etc. Also, you consider this player for it fast start up/load times. Even the iPod/iPhone remote app is a reason since it's bluetooth, meaning you can operate your player from out of sight. 3D on the other hand is just a gimmick that Sony (as well as other electronic companies) is hoping people buy into in lure of getting consumers to update there 2 or 3 year old HDTVs. 3D will no doubt fail. Think Circuit City's DIVX was a failure? 3D is even more of a failure because it's on a bigger stage backed by more companies. There will never be 3D at home as long as one must wear glasses. Also, there will only be a handful of movies released/shot in 3D (and of those few movies, even less worth watching). I understand that electronic companies have to keep introducing new technology, but 3D is going to fail and be long gone by 2012 (or else the world really will end). :) Of course, this is just my opinion.

los ca

Comments on Sony's Blu-ray players do 3D in 1080p even with HDMI 1.3

So this is like another phase of 'first-gen-esque' players...they can handle whatever content may be out at first, but this is only for the early adopters. If 3D content does catch on, 3D begins to evolve and players like this can't handle the new stuff. ...Or is this simply the start of a low-end array of 3D players....

This does, however, make me feel better about m PS3 Slim's lone HDMI 1.3 port. As I don't know what all entails the 1.4 spec, it may not matter or there may be some limitations down the road. I guess that's what you risk being an early adopter.

"Our only quibble is why DivX playback is limited to the Canadian editions of these players"
Yep.
