ESPN used Harlem Globetrotters game to test 3D basketball production
Not all the preparation for ESPN's 3D network is going on at the Innovation Lab, VP of Communications Mike Soltys recently spoke with Sports Media Watch during ESPN the Weekend at Disney and mentioned other tests under way to make sure things get off on the right foot. A recent Globetrotters game in Orlando that aired on ESPN2 served as a test bed for 3D, with production done out of the same truck as the regular broadcast and 3D cameras mounted along with their standard broadcast counterparts. NBA games will be among the "minimum" 85 3D events ESPN airs on the network over the first year and we're pretty sure they were more interested in finding out how to best capture Dwight Howard than Flight Time Lang. As we learned from Sky's recent demo, camera angle is a major part of the 3D soccer experience and to get that right there's a soccer field next to the aforementioned Innovation Lab to work out those details before this summer's World Cup debut. Check the full interview for a few more details plus notes on whether it plans on reacquiring rights to air NHL games and other major and minor recent controversies -- we'll stick to the 3D.

3d basketball
isn't real basketball 3d
waste of money
What 3D technology are they using to broadcast this? Can't be shutter since you need equipment to send the signal to the glasses.
@VampireHunterZ the glasses don't have anything to do with the broadcast. both passive and active 3D glasses systems would work with this.
the NHL going back to ESPN will be the only thing that saves the NHL.
Oh, and a new commissioner.
Can't wait to see what the world cup looks like in 3d.
I just don't understand the fasination with 3D. Why don't they worry about getting the sat/cable providers to out putting everything in 1080p instead of 720p or 1080i.
If you want to see sports in 3D go to a game.
@Proghog Seconding this. 3D at home is a fad, especially for broadcast television. We've still got everyone* compressing the hell out of their signals to an unwatchable mess just to cram more garbage channels in their lineup and we're going to throw this 3D wrench in there? Comcast is going to be looking extra bad in 2010! Oh, but it will be marketed as "1080p HD" and in "3D" so the masses will eat it up. Boooooooo. We should be leaning on cable and satellite to first 2D right before they go diving into this 3D junk.
*except FIOS
@Proghog
Thirding this... ;)
now my cable bill is going to go up because they will make it mandatory to carry the 3d channel. what do these people think when they can barely push down a 1080i picture with out compressing the crap out of it they will be able to push down 2 1080i pictures at the same time...
They need to start getting there Priorities straight. First they need to get every station converted to 1080p HD, Second Kill all of the SD statiions. Third, they can startup a new service. getting sick of all this half aZzing going on
