Can any existing customer get the new DVR unit as a free upgrade, or is it only for new customers? Does an existing customer have to make a stink and threaten to cancel service, or is there an upgrade fee/bribe that can be paid, etc.Every time I talk to Directv they give me a different answer.

Massive Attack

Comments on DBSTalk goes hands-on with DirecTV's new 24 series receivers

@Massive Attack

It really depends on which operator you talk to, how long you've been with them, and what service you have. They don't want you to leave, so they'll try to do almost anything to keep you. They know that giving you a $300 DVR box is still better than losing thousands of dollars if you leave. We were about to cancel Sunday Ticket, but they gave us over $100 off the price, so that convinced us to keep it.

In general though, you'd need to purchase the newer box (which you still do not own). Granted, why would you need to own a box that only works with them anyway? So, it's not that big of a deal. If you only have standard def, then they may make some sort of deal with you to upgrade to Hi-Def.

There's not too many choices out there if you care about your HD quality. I'm not sure how FiOs is, but U-Verse isn't that great (at least for me). Cable sucks too. Not sure about Dish. So, I wouldn't threaten to leave if you don't intend to. It will only piss off the operator.

miko34

Comments on DBSTalk goes hands-on with DirecTV's new 24 series receivers

@Meekermoloko

That hasn't worked for me at all, so much that Fios will be in my home next week.

fivehole

Comments on DBSTalk goes hands-on with DirecTV's new 24 series receivers

@Massive Attack You better take a closer look at the box containing the DirecTV HD DVRs & receivers. You are only leasing the equipment. It would be fine if it was at the beginning of a full review, but ... yeah.

I just want to know if this is going to be better than TiVo (probably not) or if it has some great features that a DirecTiVo just won't have.

One thing's for certain ... I'm going back to DirecTV whenever they decide to release these boxes. I gave U-Verse a try and after having five different techs come out to get it working correctly ... it still kinda sucks. It's fast, but the HD makes my plasma look like LCD on many of the channels. No detail in the blacks. My OTA antenna gets better HD than U-Verse.

So, DirecTV, we're all waiting.

miko34

Comments on DBSTalk goes hands-on with DirecTV's new 24 series receivers

Wow people think the Engadget comments are for Apple fanboys? The compression softening of the picture is obvious when viewed side by side, taking the picture from 1080p to barely 720p. DirecTV's been touting its capacity for 200 HD channels for months now, so when are they actually going to put some new channels on? And I don't mean more sports channels!

Glenn Gore
