Active shutter was a cool gimmick for video games when WickedVision did it for the PC in 1998 for $99 including transmitter, software, and glasses (which BTW went up to 400Hz if your monitor could handle it, but I couldn't find a CRT back then that went much above 200), but the flicker and double images would give a pretty bad headache in less than 90 minutes. For $99 effective in **every** 3D game, that was still cool, but the premium on a TV will be much higher, and rarely used at least for the next few years.

When they have passive (polarized) 3D for the living room, that will be much better. I'm surprised that people wouldn't want to watch films the way they were intended to be watched. Maybe this opinion will shift once more content becomes available that is interesting. This new batch of 3D is in its infancy so I would expect that filmmakers will perfect the process as time progresses.

If someone is buying higher-end gear this year, they're getting 3D whether they want it or not because it is included at prices comparable to the prior year, if not cheaper.

I'm buying a display this year and it is going to be capable of 3D.

Aaron

Comments on Poll: Will you still buy home theater equipment that isn't 3D-ready?

3D can go to heck. It looked AMAZING. the depth of field seen was enough for me. I am going to wait for the Mitsubishi 65" DLP to come out and get that one, as it's $1800 with all the other goodies that I want. Need a new TV anyway, my 56" panasonic isn't cutting it in my theatre room. as for receiver, i have no problem upgrading because i have 5.1, and i want 7.2. for BD, i have a PS3, so only a firmware update away from 3d capability there.

I see big use of 3d for sports, as showcased for the Masters, and we've already seen it for movies, and Monsters vs Aliens in 3d looks pretty good, will be nice to see what else they put out. DirecTV already has big plans for it, including the only carrier to initially broadcast the ESPN3D channel, and also a regular N3D channel that is going to be free to all HD customers, 3D PPV movies, and a 3D on-demand channel.

I'm sold.

stetsonaw
