I didn't have several hours each day to watch Olympic coverage. I went to Happy Hour, dinner, etc. and watched the coverage tape-delayed on my DVR without commercials or network commentary. I love the Olympics, but who regularly follows skiing. I for one am just fine with watching it just as soon as I can. Once upon a time I had to have every HD channel too, but now I realize it only matters that I get what I care to watch. The same concept applies to the Olympics. Just because live is better in theory doesn't mean it makes the most sense. Go to Canada if you have to be the first to know who won gold.

datut2000

Comments on Research firm shocks the internet, says most viewers loved NBC's Olympics coverage

My take of the Olympics: why are you sanding the ice with that stick?

Peter F

Comments on Research firm shocks the internet, says most viewers loved NBC's Olympics coverage

First of all, if you know anything about polling its all about the questions you ask. You can ask questions in a way to get the response you want. Heck look at their slogan: "The right questions...the right answers"! I wouldn't doubt that NBC commissioned Americans Q & A Research to get this data so when the next Olympics rolls around they can tape delay them again and this time cite new data statistics about how people love the tape delay or don't even know about it. I would love to see what would happen if CBS tried to tape delay the NCAA Tournament. HA!
Also there isn't any type of information about what questions were asked, or what markets they polled. If they only polled the east coast, of course they didn't get any complaints about the tape delay.

I would like to see the actual questions and more detailed information concerning this survey.

IseWise

Comments on Research firm shocks the internet, says most viewers loved NBC's Olympics coverage

None of my "normal" friends/family knew that the majority of the games was tape delayed. They would show their "darling"'s 5th place performance, but not the 1st place performance that beat them.

This year, NBC did a much better job showing the best performances regardless of the athlete's country of origin. Instead it was Canada's coverage that showed the annoying documentaries and ignored foreign athletes. I live in Toronto and mainly watched NBC. I can't stand CTV's Brian Williams (not the good one on NBC) and found the coverage disjointed, with annoying commentators and a very poor level of production overall. Sure the tape delay was annoying, but given the cost of their excellent production quality, the cost to get the rights to cover the Olympics, and the economic realities of the TV business, I thought it was just fine. More to the point, I don't see anyone being able to do a better job. Tape delay does suck... if you disagree then try this, record the world series, masters, super bowl, final four, any big american event, and watch it 8 hours later.. then come back here and see if not showing it live makes sense. But here is the best part, if you do what i just stated, then you just prove why NBC messed up, they could of showed it live and you could of still watched it via your dvr.

P.S. the best rated event for the olympics was (live) U.S. vs. Canada for the gold in hockey. We scrutinize things all the time that most people don't even know exist. Most people don't own a DVR. Mos don't have any clue what 1080i is vs 720p. The tape delay is trivial: NBC sits down and says: how can we deliver the best content at the best time? Tape delay. I don't know what the capabilities of HD programming are, but it would be really nice if during the opening ceremonies, I could pick which audio stream I was listening to. Perhaps have the main stream being with commentary, but mentioning that you could switch to audio program 2 for no commentary, and audio 3 for Spanish, or whatever other language made sense. I'd prefer the main program with no commentary in 5.1 surround.

I did not enjoy the artistry of the ceremony at all with Bob and Matt blathering on about everything.

Two years ago, after the Beijing ceremonies, I found torrents from Australian TV of broadcast that didn't have the constant commentary, and I much preferred watching that to the NBC broadcast. Plus since NBC broadcast the show in prime time already, my download delay wasn't significantly later than what was available locally.

I would argue that NBC needs to embrace the DVR as part of the changing landscape of TV or they are going to go the same way as newspapers have done relating to the internet in general. Live TV can be greatly enhanced with web content. Look at the NFL and the statistics that are available about live games in progress. Watching a game in HD while having all of the updated statistics on a laptop nearby greatly enhances the game, and is one of the few times that I watch tv LIVE. If I could have watched the particular ski racing events live, with constant timing information and leaderboards on my computer, I probably would have watched more of the olympics, live, and suffered through ads that I didn't care about for doing so.

Since I knew all of the events had already happened, I recorded entire sections of shows on my DVR, and fast forwarded through 90% of the things that didn't interest me, watching only the events that interested me and not many of the commercials. Plus, I knew that I could go to the vancouver2010.com website and look at when the events actually happened, and who metalled in each event LIVE.

William C Bonner

Comments on Research firm shocks the internet, says most viewers loved NBC's Olympics coverage

I can't really comment on NBC's televised coverage cuz I don't have a tv. But I can say that their online coverage was abominable compared to the live streaming coverage that Beijing got. The only events I could watch live online was curling, and hockey. Hockey I can understand, a lot of people tune in to the hockey. But out of all the other events they could have streamed live, did it have to be curling??

siege121677
