This one is for all of those who wonder why everyone is so 3D crazy, you see while you might think it is a gimmick, people are paying extra to go see movies in 3D at the theater. In fact since Avatar was released, 33 percent of box office earnings are from 3D movies, according to the trade group International 3D Society. Even more reason to get excited is because we're only talking four movies here. So the next time you wonder why every TV manufacture, cable company and set-top maker is 3D crazy, you'll remember it's because consumers have shown they'll pay more for 3D, and everyone want to get in on some of that action.
Um, I'm not sure about other geographic locations, but where I live in Canada Avatar and any other 3D movies were only available in 3D. They weren't shown on any screens in 2D, so if you wanted to see the movie, it was 3D or nothing. You can't draw any conclusions as to what people prefer, 3D or 2D, unless the movie is shown in both formats on the same number of screens.
I just came here to say what seaner12 said. At my local theater here in the states, I didn't get a choice when I wanted to go see Avatar. Personally I hate paying extra for something that I don't care about anyway. Given the choice I would have paid the same fee to see it in 2D if that were an option.
I'm not seeing anymore 3D movies unless they are shot in 3D ala AVATAR.. Clash of the Titans 3D was 2.5D and thats a compliment. These studios had better wake up and show us some quality work if they want to keep people like me on board. I think RESIDENT EVIL understands this as they have clearly stated that the movie was shot using AVATARS equipment..
Joke thread right. Don't include Avatar and see what the real figures are like.
am i the only one who got a headache in avatar?
I paid more for a headache?!
Bring back 2D until we get 3D without glasses.
@Punisher Plum Hate to break this to you but even if they do get glassless 3D, they won't for a LONG time due to simple physics, you are still going to get headaches. 3D is made with multiple images. And the refresh rate is what is giving you headaches, that isn't going to be changing anytime soon.
As other people have pointed out. Some people DID NOT HAVE A CHOICE! Would Avatar truly have grossed that much less if it was not in 3D. I think not.
3D is a gimmick. If it comes to stay, it is because the studios and hardware manufacturers wants it so (and they DO want the consumers to fork up more money).
However, the conclusions in this article is indeed without any real foundation.
What is Jonsson and ipaul talking about. The top 3 gorssing movies of this year are Alice in Wonderland, How to train your dragon, and clash of the titans. Give people an option they usually see the 3D version... which I totally hate, saw avatar 3d was cool, saw alice in 3d thought it was better than avatar in the 3d sense. But seriously the extra cost, and seeing this many movies in 3D will drive me crazy. I'm already tired of the 3D, once in a blu moon its cool, but every movie coming out with it will make me boycott movies till they get released on Blu.
Because they charge 33% more to watch
