In what would make the perfect way to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the release of A New Hope, a Blu-ray box set of all six Star Wars movies might just be on track for the Fall of 2011. That's the rumor anyways, with the only facts being that Lucas Film's Steve Sansweet said on a panel at C2E2 that the project was already in the works and would be released "in the not too distant future." We're not alone when we say we can't wait to enjoy the three classics for the first time all over again in HD, but we would like to get a request in before it's too late. Could you pretty please make sure all the versions of the first three are included? You know, so we can watch Han shoot first, or second, depending on how the mood strikes us.
what about the 3d versions of the 6 films. will they make it to theaters in 2011 and then come out to a special edition blu ray box set? lucas films are transferring them to 3d, and the original plan was for them to come out in 2007 for the 30th anniversery but due to lack of 3d projectors they didn't rush a release.
@gamedude360
a 3D theater release sounds like a really good idea and then a 3D blu ray box set after would be nice too
@cwalters74
Except for the part where 3d conversion is yawn-worthy and unnecessary. Have you seen Alice in Wonderland 3d? Even with a top-notch 2d-3d conversion, it's just uninteresting. Barely 3d at all compared to Avatar. It's like upconverting DVD. You can make it look a little nicer, but you just can't make HD from SD and you can't make 3d from 2d. I actually much prefered Alice 2d over the 3d, and this coming from someone who saw Avatar 3d five times.
I don't even care to see Star Wars in 3d at all, despite being a big fan and highly anticipating all 6 Star Wars on bluray.
How many different versions of these films will people need to buy? Seriously? Its no wonder America is so strapped financially that millions of people stupidly buy the same movies over and over again, and for what? To brag to their friends how they have the HD version of a film they saw and enjoyed and loved on crappy VHS? How many times are you people going to fall for the 'new and improved/special edition'?
I hear people complaining all the time about these huge media companies screwing over consumers, but when you fall for crap like this, you have it coming to you.
Will the Red Letter Media guy be doing the secondary tracks for 1, 2, and 3?
I was wondering what is taking so long. I'm kind of surprised Lucas didn't release the prequels on Blu-ray first, then again on the box set, where you'd be required to buy them again to get the original trilogy as well. The prequels were all shot digitally, so the conversion process shouldn't have been an issue.
Better start saving now.
How about a box set excluding episodes 1-3?
@EM1 I'd pay double for that.
I'm really looking forward to this set. The Star Wars DVD's have the best picture and sound quality I think I've heard on that platform. He may write horrible dialog when others don;t save him from himself, but George Lucas makes sure his movies push the limits on PQ and surround sound technology.
you mean Han.
Since you got this from the DigitalBits you should realize that the 35th anniversary of Star Wars is actually 2012, not 2011. The first movie came out in May of 1977. So if this is going to come out for the 35th anniversary it won't come out until 2012.
-Shark2k
@shark2k That would be correct. And I would love to make a conversion from standard DVD to Blu-Ray. But 2012? Man, that's a little ways, but it will be here before you know it. Just as long as I get to see them before the world ends
@shark2k
True, but releasing just before the 35th anniversary (i.e. late 2011) would allow them to catch the holiday sales season.
Without the original films, this is another meaningless money grab by lucas.
ok no 3D or BD what on earth?
DVD, pointless!!!
Unfortunately I don't think we'll ever see the original versions released again. Lucas has made it clear that he can't leave his films alone -- he even changed Phantom Menace between theater and DVD and that was only after a few months! He's assuring his fans that he's just perfecting the vision he had all along and that these versions are somehow "better", so as much as I'd like to see Han first and not see stupid Hayden Christensen at the end of Jedi rather than the original actor (I feel sorry for him considering he probably wanted his grandkids to enjoy seeing him on DVD, only to discover he'd been replaced after 20 years), I don't see it happening.
@John H
he can do what ever he wants with the prequels, hell he can remake them and i would be happy. some changes to the original trilogy are ok, others are silly though.
@John H - I know Lucas will never do it, but I won't buy this unless the original Star Wars trilogy is in it's original form without his "improvements". Anyway, I kind of miss the rectangles around the tie fighters.
@naman I always treated those things as shields =D
This will have to wait until Lucas can insert Jar-Jar into all 6 movies.
But, really ... how many times does one have to watch these, let alone buy them? Aren't most people done by now?
@kcmurphy88
I come across a surprising amount of people who haven't seen any star wars movies, and quite frankly I just can't let that stand
@commentbug Because the 'free' ones are illegal?
But I agree why it would take so long before they release the official bluray versions when the illegal versions are already floating around on the internet for a long time...
Where do I pre-order?
Seriously George Lucas, I want Star Wars on Blu-ray. Quit making us wait. And I don't need 3D, thanks.
If Han Shoots second - then no way will I buy them..
@wryker
its ok, the new blu ray version will have han shooting gredo by accident because he was actually trying to shoot howard the duck, while gredo was actually trying to shoot E T. ET gets shot though, but so does gredo. so howard the dock escapes in the uss enterprise, which gets taken over by the borg. darth vader was makinga trade agreement with the borg to fix the death stars weakness, using borg technology.
George Lucas is the reason why most artists aren't famous until after they're dead: We get to enjoy a static work of art. Not one with old technology and new technology mixed together in a bag of hurt.
I really just wanted to say 'bag of hurt.'
I also have run into way too many people that have not seen 4 5 6 in whole. They think 1 2 3 aree whole package with some add ons....tsk tsk
This is great news... but I must ask, when is the bluray version of StarWars kid releasing?
I am very excited that the Star Wars Flims are being worked on for a Blu-Ray release. I hope that for the original trilogy both the origianl and the special edtion's of Epiosodes 4, 5 and 6 are on blu-ray. I hope this happens. Have different versions of the original trilogy of blu-ray.
