Ask Engadget HD: What do you think Google TV's 'Dragonpoint' will be?
No home theater how-to this time, instead we'll pose a different question. Thanks to mainstream media "leaks" there's little doubt Google will have something TV related to show off at its I/O 2010 conference tomorrow, but what are you expecting / hoping to see? Let us know what an Intel Atom powered set-top box or smart HDTV running Android might (or at least, should) offer above and beyond your current set-top box, HTPC or other solution.
We've got low expectations -- we're pretty sure there will be yet another series of devices capable of streaming Pandora on their way to shelves by this holiday season and really, as long as we can tune into our all-Jan Hammer, all the time customized station that is just fine.
Bonus question: Do you think Sony will actually be (the only one) jumping on the platform from the start?

I think Dragonpoint in TVs is a mistake. As Ben has said on the podcast, you don't interface with the TV when you're watching TV, you interface with your DVR. So putting Dragonpoint on TV is a mistake from the get-go.
However, Dragonpoint in DVR's could be interesting. When I first heard of this rumor all I could think about was it being Google Search. Which could be nice. Something like the TiVo integrated search, but better because its Google. There is obviously going to be some type of App/Widget market. I think apps and widgets are better served in DVRs as I stated above. If the remotes for these Dragonpoint DVRs are to made by Logitech with a QWERTY layout, the apps and widgets might actually be useful.
I am hoping it will be fast and not full of the dumb design mistakes that other DVR menus have. It probably wont look very pretty, in typical Google fashion or rather late of fashion.
Just as popular as Microsoft media room. So like vaperware.
this is just another way in which google can really make its money, advertisements. they will record every piece of data they can about what u watch, when u watch it, and for how long, wat days, etc...its all a way for them to make more money off of their whole new branch into TV advertising market. they are become a huge powerhouse there and this will only enable them to become bigger.
TV ads will all be google controlled soon..they already operate as a major broker between ad agencies and TV stations/regional broadcasters so this is a logical next step.
being able to get real-time advertising market data will be great for them.
google is watching and listening...always
I think the biggest problem with "Dragon Point" is bandwidth if it will be an internet tv.
I don't have any significant expectations. Widgets? Something useless? That would be my guess.
I don't want the web on my TV. First of course its all changing too fast so I'm not going to pay hundreds extra for some internet features that will be useless in a couple of years on a TV that costs more than a thousand dollars. That $99 Roku box I can just toss away and buy something new. I'm going to be stuck with that TV for a while.
If I were interested the things I would be interested in would be video playback. Hulu (Flash). ABC (Move). CBS. Comedy Central. Etc. The big media web sights. And it seems almost certain they WON'T announce this. Hulu would probably block them anyway if they did. And the other sites would follow. Plus of course the Atom CPU can't handle "HD" flash playback without an Ion. Which since Intel is involved won't be in there. So forget it.
Yes, I would expect something minor like Pandora or last.fm integration. Weather widgets. Stuff like that. But didn't Yahoo do that with Widgets at CES a year ago? And how many people care about that exactly?
