PlayStation 3 is finally HDTV ready with an HDMI cable pack-in for Father's Day
It's always seemed a bit ridiculous to us that a console that promised "full HD features from the start" was never capable of playing games or movies in high definition right out of the box, but this special Father's Day PS3 bundle fixes that with an HDMI cable packed in. Of the many PlayStation 3 SKUs so far, none have come with anything other than standard def-only composite cables, requiring add-on component cables (the ones for PS2 always worked) for 720p/1080i or an aftermarket HDMI cable for 1080p, and retailers have been only too happy to limit their supply to $40+ options. The Xbox 360 used to earn a gold star for including component cables and later HDMI in some packages, but recently dropped HD cables in the name of saving a few bucks. We're sure you've already got Monoprice and other bargain cable sellers bookmarked, but at least we can rest easy knowing Dad can enjoy LittleBigPlanet or a Blu-ray movie on his HDTV without having to run back out for the proper cables.

Dude, monoprice . com FTW!
@Vanilla Sperm
Seriously. $4.99, 6 feet long, gold plated connectors, and blue.
@Vanilla Sperm If you have access to a Fry's Electronics, go there. They have the super-expensive cables in the most easily accessible areas, but if you look hard enough, you can find the no-name Chinese sweatshop ones, too. I got a 3-pack of six-foot cables for 10 bucks.
Oh man! I bet my picture will look better when I plug in my new $70 gold-plated cable. I can't believe I played Metal Gear on that little yellow plug.
When is it going to be 3D ready?
They should have been packing them in....I'm sure It doesn't cost them more than $5 per cable....and that's for their Sony Branded cables
@Chris DPSN AggieCEO XBLThe Aggi
Agreed. They should have been packing them in there. Microsoft should too.
@Chris DPSN AggieCEO XBLThe Aggi - Hell, it doesnt cost us more than $3 a cable.
@Kamalot MS did in the old "Elite" SKU but has since dropped it...iblamw Sony
@Kamalot
Microsoft used to package component cables in the Pro and the Elite models and an HDMI in the Elite models. They dropped those though when they got rid of the Pro and made the Elite cheaper.
It now costs more for an xbox with a hard drive and HD cables than it used to before the price "drop."
Since they got rid of the stuff that made the elite "elite" I don't know why they continue to call it that. They basically just dropped HD cabes from the Pro, gave it a larger drive and made it black.
@Chris DPSN AggieCEO XBLThe Aggi it would be nice if Sony originally did include an HDMI cable, but its understandable that they didnt, Sony STILL is not making profit on the system. (they are selling it for less than the cost to make it so PS3 can stay in the market)
@Chris DPSN AggieCEO XBLThe Aggi
$5? I doubt it costs Sony even a measly dollar to manufacture a cable. That's the extent of their outlay.
Some marketing droid would probably point out that by *not* including a cable they save a dollar and some people would even buy the official cable for $30 which makes Sony and the store happy. That's likely the reason that MS don't bundle the cable either.
Sad but true.
Microsoft and Sony were helping companies like Monster scam people that don't know any better into buying their overpriced junk. Glad to see Sony is finally being sensible. Monoprice rocks.
MSFT took out their HD cables lolz
gud won soni
@manifest3r
i iz cool, just like you init!
How novel.
They should add this to the commercial;
It Does Everything*
*Just not out of box.
Dear Sony,
ABOUT FUC*ING TIME!
Microsoft WTF
I think it's a little unfair to say that the PS3 was "was never capable of playing games or movies in high definition right out of the box". I'd even go so far as to say it is outright wrong. The quote you use from your old story is actually "full HD features from the start so that consumers won't have to buy another version of the console in the future." So if you take it out of context and apply it to cables rather than the technology...
And it's kind of like complaining that a printer manufacturer doesn't include a USB (or parallel, etc.) cable. Some people, like myself, buy HDMI cables when I bought my TV knowing that my components wouldn't include them.
I'd rather buy them when I need them (and at the quality and length I choose) than have 10 of the things lying around unused.
IDK, but seems kind of iffy to run a story about a manufacturer including/not including cables with their product. Isn't Apple releasing anything today?
@NHAnimator You could say that, but you'd be wrong.
They included cables, but not ones you could play in HD with. Requiring an aftermarket accessory to make use of the core feature of a mass market aimed product is ridiculous and shameful.
also, this is the kind of site that reports when an electronics manufacturer makes a change in the contents of a tech product it's already sold millions of. Welcome to Engadget!
Thanks for your input.
@NHAnimator it's bullshit when they don't include the usb cable with the printer, too
@RichardLawler
If an HDMI cable were included with my nephew's xbox, it would be sitting in a drawer. He doesn't have an HDTV.
If a USB cable were included with my printer, it would be sitting in a drawer. I use the wireless option instead.
Sometimes a product has more than one option for connecting. Are they supposed to provide composite, component AND HDMI cables?
@NHAnimator My satellite receiver came with composite, component and HDMI cords. Right now the composite and component cords are sitting in the box, and somehow I've never seen this as a problem.
@NHAnimator Your printer came with ink cartridges.
Because it's supposed to print.
Your nephew's xbox, depending on when he bought it, may have come with an HDMI cable, or component/composite cables. That's what they're for.
it's really too bad you have no idea what you're talking about.
I was shopping for an HDMI cable for my 360 the other day, pulled into Frys and couldn't believe that there are $200 cables out there, or that people are stupid enough to buy them. I searched around and ended up getting a cable for $5.
@b0nes not bad for 5 bucks, I bought a couple from ebay for 2 bucks each.
Should've been packed in from the get go, when Sony was advertising heavily about HD this and HD that.
I don't know. I never found a problem with it. It was an inconvenience, sure, but a huge problem? Nope. Just go to monoprice . com and pick up a $5 cheapie and you're good to go. Heck, I've seen deals for 3 of them for $8. I probably still have a few spare ones hanging around.
@bluesolace I think it's the principle of the matter, you pay $500 (at the time) for a system and they don't even include the cable so you can actually use it the way it's supposed to be used.
But I do buy $5 HDMI cables in bulk (5 or 6) at a time so I'll always have one around that I can use.
If you did not buy your cable from Monoprice............You just got bent over!
component cables are capable of 1080P why does every one doubt this?
@vanwazltoff
No one doubts this but many TVs will not support 1080p via the component inputs. There are also potential restrictions on the content side.
@vanwazltoff
I'm pretty sure the PS3 doesn't support 1080p over component, even though the cables can carry the signal.
@vanwazltoff The PS3 does not do 1080p over component for anything, even games, afaik. I know it's possible, I have my Xbox 360 set up that way right now, but the PS3 just doesn't give you the option.
@vanwazltoff
It's not even about 1080p for some of us. For me, it's about having ONE CABLE to connect to one input for both video and audio, rather than having to make five different connections (YPbPr + R/L Audio).
My main TV is a 1080i CRT. It doesn't have HDMI ports. Until I bought an HDTV/Monitor for my computer, I wouldn't have been able to make use of an HDMI cable.
i seem to get discolorations with both HDMI and component cables and i have to wiggle them around quite often, is it the cables them selves? or is it a common problem with sony bravia LCDs
I really dislike the fact that you linked to an article where you encouraged people to buy Monster cables. I don't care that it's a 4 year old article, it still probably generated sales to those asshats at Monster!
Boo, Engadget, booo!!!
Hey, Monster! You feel like suing more companies for using the name "Monster"? There's a pest control service in my area with the name, I'm sure you can put them out of business real easy.
BOYCOTT MONSTER. NOW AND FOREVER!
I bought from Monoprice back in February. At the time, their servers got hacked & a bunch of people's credit card info was stolen. My card showed $1500 worth of fraudulent purchases soon.
That STILL doesn't deter me from using Monoprice though. Great selection at cheap prices!
I really thought my original PS3 60gb came with like a 4ft hdmi cable almost positive
@ericg1840 Nope. It's possible you bought a store bundle with a cable, but it wasn't in the box, I had a 60GB PS3Fat too, there's a breakdown in the Joystiq chart linked here.
I had to go back to using component due to my stupid TV having issue with HDCP. Everytime the output resolution changed from the PS3, stupid TV would freak. Took all kinds of power cycleing and cable disconnecting to get it to reset. Stupid Sharp Aquos.
How much is this bundle?
lol this it too funny.. they include a $5 cable with it? Was that really that hard Sony? Every PS3 should come standard with an HDMI cable. this is ridiculous that there has to be a special sale for something like this.
@deepen03
$5 over millions of units adds up dude, think about it.
now about that pack-in USB cable ...
is it still only about three feet long which means you have to sit on top of your TV to play anything when the dualshock battery runs out?
About F-ing time
Good move too bad M$ dropped their cables. I got my 360 when they had cables but Sony never included them with my PS3 :(
I had component and HDMI cables out the yin yang though. I've always tripped off people saying they paid 60 bucks for a damn HDMI cable. I had a buddy do that when he bought his ps3, guess the dude at Best Buy snaked him good.
Oh, poor Best Buy will be selling less $80 Monster and Rocketfish cables now, what a crying shame!
@Dandmcd BEST BUY are a bunch of cable thieves
