Last week
ESPN 3D launched, and
Comcast's information indicated
many users with older cable boxes wouldn't be able to get on the action without an upgrade. The good news for
TiVo owners is that information has since been updated and now TiVo Series 3 / HD and TiVo Premiere units are on the approved list for 3DTV broadcasts. We're not sure exactly what the hangup might have been and how it was resolved, but if you've got one of those DVRs hooked up to a 3DTV and Comcast service, it's definitely time to get on the phone and have the channel activated so you can watch the World Cup properly.
That's good news. They used to send ESP3D as MPEG4 in most areas, and only in some in MPEG2. I had Comcast enable the ESPN 3D channel on my lineup, but the TiVo did not like the MPEG4 video at all.
Tuning to that channel, the image would stay black. I could schedule a recording, and the file size was growing, but the show was immediately discarded after the recording stopped. This also prevented me from trying to use "Tivo Transfer" to copy the recording to my Mac and play it there.
I'll try that again tonight, now that it's supposed to work.
I wonder what they changed, maybe they switched ESPN3D to MPEG2 everywhere, because too many customers wanted their boxes swapped?
What a pitiful waste of time. USA + World Cup 2010 + 3D + Comcast + Tivo = FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL STUPID STUPID STUPID
I would love to see the sales figures of 3D TV's then now add people who have Tivo on Comcast, then add US people who care about World Cup 2010 = ZERO
@Scarabaeus Sorry you are obviously "1"
@iPaul Sure am. And I'm not alone, check out the AVS thread:

ESPN 3D is not only on Comcast, but also on DirecTV and AT&T U-Verse. And the World Cup is great, IMHO!
@iPaul
Seriously, what is a point of making a comment like that. This is great news for now and for later, if you want to enjoy 3D using TiVo Series 3 or Premiere.
Besides, not sure if you read Time magazines article about world cup, but all the games will be watched by total of 2.2 billion people. So yes people do care and many of them live here in US.
Tivo S3/HD and newer have broadcom chips that support MPEG4. Possibly there was some information in the mpeg header that was added to allow this to work?
