Ask Engadget HD: Which HDTV for a Father's Day gift?
It's that time of year, and sometimes a card and "Thanks for being there, Dad" just isn't going to cut it. It's high time the old man had an HDTV upgrade, and we're going to make sure Amir gives him a worthy one:

You've got the requirements, works well even in a brightly lit room, he's looking for plenty of size for his dollars, and a budget of roughly $2k. Is a Sony LCD really the best option or would you go in another direction? Let us know what you would do if you were in Amir's shoes, or what you'd get for your Dad."Hey Engadget HD It's almost Father's Day and some of the best TVs are on sale. I need an HDTV that works great in just about the brightest room, so I know it needs to be an LCD, right? It needs to be as big as possible because it's replacing a 75 inch Mitsubishi projection HDTV that we can't see during the day, and around a max of $2000. I keep going back to Sony because I trust their products. Any suggestions?"

Samsung 50 or 58" 3D Plasma
@techlord
Your right.
That fits what he asks for pretty much perfectly.
@techlord He said brightly lit room, and you're recommending a plasma?
Sony KDL60EX500
If you are used to 75", no economical LCD or plasma is going to make you happy. Check out the brand new 73" Mitsubishi DLP. Once calibrated, the picture is excellent. Lamps are now $99 and last a while. Only downside is the UI is awful, but if you go through a receiver for switching, you will only turn the TV on and off.
Panasonic G20. I currently have the 50" G10. The G20 is just this years model. It comes in a 46, 50, and 54. Beautiful picture, 600mhz, 1080p, 2million:1 contrast ratio...you can't go wrong.
Panasonic 54" G20 series. Can't beat the black levels on it, Estimated contrast is around 5,000,000:1 which is 5x better than anything led-wise. Assuming Panasonic has learned their lesson regarding the voltage increases, it can be had for just under 1800.00.
