Keep an eye out for a 240hz LED, preferably the Sony NX8. It comes in a 52" which would suit you well. I also like the Samsung c8000, it is 3d as well, but for a gaming tv it would be one of the better ones on the market. You might want to take a look at a plasma if the tv is going in a darker room, burn-in is much less of a problem these days and Panasonic makes a great screen, the 54g20 or g25. Plasma tvs are going to be the fastest on the market as well as give you a very accurate picture.
I would also recommend to calibrate the display, particularly the grey-scale so you can open up your shadow detail for seeing enemies hiding in shadow corners.

lukemckinlay

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: Best HDTV for gaming, pwning?

@lukemckinlay Beware of TVs with high refresh rates; a lot of them interpolate frames for that super-smooth effect, which isn't a problem in itself, but depending on the TV, it can increase the input lag by as much as 50-100ms. You'll want it calibrated correctly for cable, but for video games you'll want to dynamically boost the colors so you can see more detail. You can get a 50" for under $1000, and no LCD of that size under $2000 will be able to match its performance. Plasmas have no refresh rates, unlike LCDs. Some REALLY bad advice so far, I'm sad to say.

Phillip, you mention things like counting frames, which means that you cannot rely on people who are just saying, "I think it looks great" or "I haven't noticed any lag". :roll eyes:

Phillip, you are a SERIOUS gamer, and therefore, you need REAL information about input lag. What you've been told here so far is NOT going to cut it for you!

First things first, no 50-55" flat panel HDTV is going to be 100% free of input lag. But you CAN get down to about 16ms, which is ONE FRAME of input lag. That is pretty darn good and invisible to the naked eye when things are in motion. Generally speaking, up to about 32ms (or two frames) of lag is considered excellent for a flat panel, but if you're counting frames, even that might be too much lag.

The new Panasonic VT25 plasmas have been tested and shown to have excellent, low input lag of one frame or less. The same cannot be said for Samsung and LG plasmas or even other Panny plasmas. Panny is generally better with 2 frames of lag or thereabouts. Some of Samsung's plasmas are up over 85ms, which is over 5 frames! So you cannot just say, "plasma is good". No sir, it depends on the specific make AND model. But the VT25 Panasonics are about as good as a flat panel can get.

Now, the VT25 will only look its best in a dim or dark room. Being a plasma, it washes out a bit in normal or bright lighting. Also, being a plasma, you CAN still get image retention or mild "burn-in". I have owned 3 plasmas and all of them have eventually shown some mild burn-in after I've used them for hours upon hours of gaming.

In the LCD world, it's a lot harder. IPS panels generally have low input lag, but you won't find IPS panels on sizes larger than about 37" generally speaking. Sharp (and the Sony and Samsung models that use Sharp-made panels) is generally better in the larger screen sizes for LCD. The E77U series, in particular has been tested and shown to have less than 2 frames of input lag.

Sadly, most large LCDs these days have glossy screens, poor screen uniformity (corners are brighter, flashlighting, backlight clouding) and terrible off-axis viewing.

The LG LH90 (a 2009 model - now discontinued) was ok, with just over 2 frames of lag. It had a matte screen and better screen uniformity (though not perfect). As a television though, it is the only large LCD that I can tolerate due to the major (IMO) image quality short-comings of virtually all other large LCD displays!

So:

great image quality and almost no lag; but needs a dim or dark room to look best = Panasonic plasma - VT25 in particular

Very good image quality, but higher (2 frames) lag = LG LH90

Low lag, no fear of plasma burn-in; but poor (IMO) image quality with glossy screen and uneven screen uniformity = Sharp E77U LCD

There's no free lunch!

FirstReflect

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: Best HDTV for gaming, pwning?

Get a projector screen, then you can see (and shoot) people who are far away with ease.

Joeyjoejoe

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: Best HDTV for gaming, pwning?

get any Panasonic VT25 series plasma and you'll be set

darth cardo

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: Best HDTV for gaming, pwning?

I have always been partial to Sony products as they seem to last ages with little to no issues. He has some good info. I personally was looking for the same thing last year and ended up buying a Sony 52" XBR9. I really wanted a panny plasma but in the winter there is times I play 5 plus hours and was still nervous about retention/burn in. The main reason I went with the sony xbr9 because it had low lag, kept the highest resolution during fast action of any lcd, and has a very nice matte screen which still has good color. You can find info like this on avsforums and cnet to name a couple. Oh yeah it is 240hz but its not needed. The downfall of the tv is that it isnt as bright as led backlit tvs but has more even color than edge lit led lcds. Some people reported some Clouding problems in really dark movies but I guess I'm lucky as i havent run into any of it. I "heard" sony was replacing bad ones but can't be sure that was true. I found my xbr for $2100 shipped to my door even though it was listed around $3500 at most places. Once you figure out what you want search for a deal on it. Also don't go to a best buy but Try to find a high end AV store and check out the hdtvs there then find a deal online or see if they can cut you a deal because u can haggle there unlike a big box store. You can prob find a great deal still on a HDTV from last year if you don't care about 3D. Just keep doing research an make sure you see the tv first. Don't be afraid of messing with setting in the store either. This will be a good start but do your research and don't rush to get your first HDTV.

Pukrnukr

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: Best HDTV for gaming, pwning?

THE Panasonic Viera TC-P50VT25 IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

zachchen1996

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: Best HDTV for gaming, pwning?

@zachchen1996
it costs 1960 $
here is the review to the vt25: http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/panasonic-viera-tc-p50vt25/4505-6482_7-33941234.html?tag=contentMain;contentBody

where to buy it: http://www.justbuyelectronics.com/prodinfo.phtml?id=925&ref=grabber

zachchen1996

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: Best HDTV for gaming, pwning?

@zachchen1996

review:http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/panasonic-viera-tc-p50vt25/4505-6482_7-33941234.html?tag=contentMain;contentBody

buy it:http://www.justbuyelectronics.com/prodinfo.phtml?id=925&ref=grabber

zachchen1996
