Microsoft's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/windowsmobile6.5">Windows Mobile 6.5</a> release is just a month away, and so too are the first phones that will utilize it. <em>Boy Genius Report</em> has managed to get its hands on one slide from a recent AT&amp;T concall confirming a partial list of the handsets set to ship with the new, improved, more finger-friendly flavor of the OS, and even a few models that will be upgraded to it. Two from Samsung, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/epix">Epix</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/14/samsung-jack-comes-to-atandt-on-may-19-99-99-on-contract/">Jack</a>, will receive version updates in October, while HP's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/hp,obsidian">Obsidian</a>, earlier targeted for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/24/hp-triumphantly-returns-to-atandt-with-ipaq-k3-obsidian/">November</a>, seems to have been pushed back to December, and LG's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/lg,monaco">Monaco</a> similarly has slipped to November. HTC's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/htc,fortress">Fortress</a> (a.k.a. the Pro2), however, will apparently be ready with bells on next month. As will we, dear readers. As will we.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/htc/" rel="tag">HTC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/lg/" rel="tag">LG</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/samsung/" rel="tag">Samsung</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/atandt/" rel="tag">ATT</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/21/leaked-atandt-presentation-confirms-remaining-winmo-releases-for-2/">Leaked AT&amp;T presentation confirms remaining WinMo releases for 2009, that employees can't spell 'proprietary'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 21 Sep 2009 07:23:00 EST. Sure, we could beat around the bush and say, "well, the test report calls it an iPAQ and it's got both GSM and HSPA on the 850 and 1900MHz bands, so it's probably headed to AT&amp;T" -- but let's cut to the chase for once, shall we? Despite much of the documentation still falling under confidentiality, HP's latest phone has "AT&amp;T SKU" written right on its publicly-available ID label, so that pretty much settles that. Interestingly, the documentation repeatedly refers to the new WinMo-powered handset as the "iPAQ KB1," but we have every reason to believe this is the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/24/hp-ipaq-k3-obsidian-lives-it-up-in-the-wild-sneaks-in-a-stylus/">K3 Obsidian</a> that's been floating around for a while now. To be fair, we don't know whether that's a go-to-market name -- nor do we know the price or launch date, for that matter -- whatever it's called, we can now take comfort in the knowledge that it'll be 100 percent legal to use on American soil.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/01/hps-ipaq-k3-obsidian-gets-fcc-approval-enroute-to-atandt/">HP's iPAQ K3 Obsidian gets FCC approval enroute to AT&amp;T</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 01 Sep 2009 14:06:00 EST. Keen eyed <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mediasmartserver">HP MediaSmart server</a> fans peeped a new version number in a test software update package, 3.1.0.00000. There's no indication what that possible software update might contain, but that hasn't stopped speculation focusing on the possibility of this either being the EX and LX series update promised a few months ago, or a hint towards all new hardware on the way. In lieu of any hard information, we'll let your hopes, dreams and desires fill in the blanks of what the next iteration of these home servers might contain.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-pcs/" rel="tag">Media PCs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/12/test-update-could-indicate-new-hp-mediasmart-server-in-the-works/">Test update could indicate new HP MediaSmart server in the works, or nothing at all</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 12 Aug 2009 16:24:00 EST. There's always been a little chunk of softness in our cold, stone hearts for candybar QWERTY handsets. Stylus interaction? Not so much. That's why it's a little disappointing to see HP's upcoming <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/24/hp-triumphantly-returns-to-atandt-with-ipaq-k3-obsidian/">iPAQ K3 Obsidian handset</a> for AT&amp;T show up with a stylus on board, despite the initial leaked documents we saw that clearly stated otherwise. Still, it's nice to see how Windows Mobile 6.5 can operate under such conditions, and the 2.43-inch screen <em>is</em> OLED, even if it's restricted to a mere QVGA resolution. It appears that a scroll wheel does the duty of shuffling through that honeycomb menu. As far as we know, we're still looking at a November release.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.slashgear.com/hp-ipaq-k3-obsidian-caught-in-wild-with-att-branding-2450250/">SlashGear</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/atandt/" rel="tag">ATT</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/24/hp-ipaq-k3-obsidian-lives-it-up-in-the-wild-sneaks-in-a-stylus/">HP iPAQ K3 Obsidian lives it up in the wild, sneaks in a stylus for the nostalgic types</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 24 Jul 2009 10:10:00 EST. After being <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/29/hp-mediasmart-lx195-boasts-640gb-hdd-1-6ghz-atom-400-msrp/">introduced to the world</a> late last month, we've heard little else about HP's lower-end MediaSmart Server LX195... until now, obviously. This little media streamer made its way into the <em>HotHardware</em> labs for a little Q&amp;A, and it managed to escape with lots of praise, a mild amount of criticism and a price tag that'll likely be too steep for most to swallow. As for performance and features, the LX195 was found to shine; the Media Collector, iTunes server and Time Machine backup functionality all worked great. Unfortunately, the "endless loop of updates" seen during the initial setup and the lack of an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/13/firmware-update-brings-file-conversion-iphone-access-to-hps-me/">April update</a> -- which was sent out to the EX series <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/22/hp-mediasmart-ex485-ex487-v2-5-update-now-available/">last month</a> -- left somewhat of a bitter taste in reviewers mouths. Overall, the system delivered and worked as advertised, but the $360 to $400 street price is apt to turn all but the hardest of hardcore HP fans away, not to mention that the aforesaid EX update (which will hit the LX195 this fall) will require users to completely wipe their HDD and start over from scratch. Check the read link for the full writeup.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-streamers/" rel="tag">Media streamers</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/26/hps-mediasmart-server-lx195-reviewed-impressive-but-flawed/">HP's MediaSmart Server LX195 reviewed: impressive, but flawed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 26 May 2009 09:51:00 EST. Tears well up in our eyes when we think back to the early days of Windows Mobile and HP's dominance; in recent years, the company has all but vanished from the scene, trudging along with a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ipaq">handful of poorly-marketed, underexposed devices</a> that haven't launched on any US carrier. Turns out we haven't said our last goodbyes, though, because the iPAQ K3 -- codenamed "Obsidian," seemingly -- is scheduled for November 30 retail availability on AT&amp;T. The device would launch with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/windowsmobile6.5">Windows Mobile 6.5</a> onboard and feature a 2 megapixel camera (a second cameraless version for high-security businessfolk might be available, too), 256MB of RAM, a half gig of ROM, microSD slot, GPS, triband HSDPA and quadband EDGE, WiFi, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a QVGA display to complement the full QWERTY keyboard. Looks like it won't be the most exciting smartphone on the carrier's shelves, but it might be a sensible choice for businesses and really, really boring people. Follow the break for a couple renders of the phone in action-packed angle shots!<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/24/hp-triumphantly-returns-to-atandt-with-ipaq-k3-obsidian/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HP triumphantly returns to AT&amp;T with iPAQ K3 "Obsidian"</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/features/" rel="tag">Features</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/atandt/" rel="tag">ATT</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/24/hp-triumphantly-returns-to-atandt-with-ipaq-k3-obsidian/">HP triumphantly returns to AT&amp;T with iPAQ K3 "Obsidian"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 24 May 2009 18:23:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Peter Brett, not happy to simply bide his time on the daily commute with his <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Kindle/">Kindle</a>, set about intead writing his own, on his <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iPaq/">iPaq</a> smartphone. The trips between his home in Brooklyn and his work in Times Square were about 45 minutes, or, about 400 words each way. Over the course of two years, his 100,000 word novel took shape and is now in print, and apparently a bestseller in Poland and England. We've seen something similar in the past, but that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/24/author-taps-out-384-page-book-using-mobile/">384-page</a> effort pales in comparison, and content aside, he should give himself a pat on the back and a big glossy sticker for effort. Here's hoping HP catches wind and ponies up a new set to replace his current and most likely fairly worn device.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.switched.com/2009/04/23/man-writes-400-page-novel-on-cell-phone/">Switched</a>]</div>

HP's MediaSmart Server ex487 (1.5TB) and ex485 (750GB) both received copious amounts of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/hp-mediasmart-server-ex487-gets-hands-on-love-and-full-blown-rev/">praise</a> when launched late last year, but considering just <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/29/hp-responds-to-mediasmart-issues-offers-no-real-solution-at-all/">how many issues</a> the original two had (the ex470 and ex475), it wouldn't take much to best 'em. Today, HP is issuing its second <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/23/hp-issues-software-update-for-mediasmart-server/">firmware update</a> of the year for the series, but the first ever for the newest duo -- and make no mistake, it's a big one. The v2.5 update adds in loads of new features, far too many to cover in this space, in fact. No big surprises here -- <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/HP/">HP</a>'s announced for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/WindowsMobile65/">Windows Mobile 6.5</a> for its future devices, confirming what we already knew: HP is awesome. The company cites WinMo 6.5's "key enhancements to business productivity, personal messaging and mobile Internet capabilities" plus its "new visual appeal" as some of the reasons for its continued love of the OS. We don't have any specific information about upcoming Windows-boasting devices, but we'll let you know as soon as we catch sight of one or more -- because we're here for you. Definitely falling into that "and beyond" category would be MySpace, which pledged its support presumably to get its tentacles deep inside the Symbian codebase -- a wise move considering the obvious trend toward mobile social networking. Also notable are the additions of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/HP/">HP</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Qualcomm/">Qualcomm</a>, GPS chipset maker <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/SiRF/">SiRF</a>, and SanDisk. If you've been holding off on picking up a new WinMo handset on Rogers, today just might be your lucky day. You know, if you're totally in love with HP's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/10/rogers-q3-lineup-revealed/">iPAQ 910c Business Manager</a>. Said Canadian carrier is offering up this here phone for $249.99 (down from $399.99) on a 3-year contract, but for those who despise red tape, you can snag it off-contract for $499.99. As for specs, it sports Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, built-in GPS, WiFi, a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 resolution touchscreen, a full QWERTY keyboard, a microSD card slot, three megapixel camera (with video recording possibilities) and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR. So, is it business time, or what?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.intomobile.com/2009/02/06/its-business-time-rogers-launches-hp-ipaq-910-business-manager.html">IntoMobile</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/rogers-wireless/" rel="tag">Rogers Wireless</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/06/rogers-offers-up-hps-ipaq-910c-business-manager-for-249-99/">Rogers offers up HP's iPAQ 910c Business Manager for $249.99</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 06 Feb 2009 17:22:00 EST. In reality, HP should've made sure that its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/21/hps-ipaq-data-messenger-voice-messenger-get-official-on-vodaf/">iPAQ Data Messenger</a> shipped alongside the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/04/hps-ipaq-voice-messenger-on-sale-on-vodafone-uk/">Voice Messenger</a> back in December, but given that it didn't, we suppose it's a small victory that the handset is finally up for pre-order in the UK today. Of course, getting any halfway intelligent Briton to spend &pound;419 ($593) on this already forgotten WinMo 6.1 device (with Mobile World Congress just weeks away, no less) is a challenge we're thrilled to not be responsible for. <br /><br />[Thanks, Lester]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/vodafone/" rel="tag">Vodafone</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/27/hps-ipaq-data-messenger-finally-up-for-pre-order/">HP's iPAQ Data Messenger finally up for pre-order</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 27 Jan 2009 11:16:00 EST. HP's 1.5TB MediaSmart Server ex487 (and its smaller 750GB sibling, the ex485) were just <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/hp-debuts-mac-compatible-mediasmart-ex485-ex487-home-servers/">announced</a> hours ago, but that hasn't stopped a few lucky reviewers from putting their hands-on pictures and impressions online for the world to pore over. The biggest knocks that seemed to really grate the nerves of critics were that the single eSATA port was not port-multiplier aware, and despite the bump to 2GB of RAM, the TwonkyMedia and Remote Media Streaming software were still deemed "quirky and in need of some polish." Those gripes aside, the newfangled unit was pretty well adored. In fact, <em>WeGotServed</em> flat-out called the device "stunning," praising HP for its tightly integrated applications that worked fairly well on top of Windows Home Server. For those eying a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/15/poll-do-you-stream-hd-media-around-your-home/">simple-to-use media server</a>, it looks like HP finally produced one that can be purchased sans regret; the real question, however, is will the outfit push these delectable new features down to existing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/03/hps-mediasmart-ex475-takes-on-homegrown-windows-home-server-sys/">ex470 / ex475</a> owners?<br /><br /><a href="http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2008/12/28/review-hp-mediasmart-server-ex48/">Read</a> - MediaSmartServer review<br /><a href="http://www.wegotserved.co.uk/2008/12/29/hands-on-hp-mediasmart-server-ex487-part-1/">Read</a> - WeGotServed review / hands-on<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/reviews/" rel="tag">Reviews</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-streamers/" rel="tag">Media streamers</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/hp-mediasmart-server-ex487-gets-hands-on-love-and-full-blown-rev/">HP MediaSmart Server ex487 gets hands-on love and full-blown review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 29 Dec 2008 08:18:00 EST. It's been a long, long while since we've heard the words <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mediasmart/">HP MediaSmart</a>, and in fact, the last mention that was made <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/29/hp-responds-to-mediasmart-issues-offers-no-real-solution-at-all/">wasn't exactly positive</a>. HP's looking to put the past away and forge ahead with two new ones in the line: the Mac-friendly ex485 and ex487. Both devices are (of course) based on Microsoft's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/whs/">Windows Home Server</a> platform, and just like their <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/07/microsoft-announces-hp-mediasmart-server-powered-by-windows-home/">predecessors</a>, these are meant to automatically backup machines around the home and act as a network-accessible repository for all things media. The pair features HP's Media Collector (used to schedule, copy and centralize digital files from networked PCs) and also acts as an iTunes server and an external backup device for Macs running Leopard and using Apple's Time Machine software. As for specs, you'll find a 2GHz Celeron CPU in each with 2GB of DDR2 RAM, gigabit Ethernet, four USB 2.0 ports, one eSATA jack and four internal HDD bays. The February-bound duo can be pre-ordered on January 5th for $599 (ex485; 750GB) / $749 (ex487; 1.5TB), and each can be scaled up to 9TB. Full release is after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/hp-debuts-mac-compatible-mediasmart-ex485-ex487-home-servers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HP debuts Mac-compatible MediaSmart ex485 / ex487 home servers</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-streamers/" rel="tag">Media streamers</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/hp-debuts-mac-compatible-mediasmart-ex485-ex487-home-servers/">HP debuts Mac-compatible MediaSmart ex485 / ex487 home servers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 29 Dec 2008 00:42:00 EST. Chalk this one up as rampant speculation for now, but word on the street has it that HP may be fixing to axe its LCD TV business and kill the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/07/hp-brings-youtube-to-mediasmart-connected-products/">MediaSmart HDTV</a> while it's at it. In taking a step back, it's easy to see how logical this move seems -- HP has never been a giant in the LCD HDTV arena, and its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/03/hp-intros-sl4282n-sl4782n-connected-hdtvs-updates-media-center/">MediaSmart line</a> serves an even smaller niche. Couple those facts with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/28/global-tv-pricing-sinks-22-year-over-year-in-september/">plummeting LCD prices</a> and diminishing margins, and you've got yourself a pretty strong case to hit the eject button. If all of this pans out, it'll surely hurt Microsoft's chances of getting even more TV manufacturers to sell sets with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/17/vista-media-center-update-for-hps-mediasmart-hdtvs-now-availabl/">Media Center Extenders built in</a>, but at least those still on the hunt for a MediaSmart HDTV on the cheap would have an opportunity to find just that.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.electronichouse.com/article/hp_dumping_mediasmart_tvs/C157">ElectronicHouse</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-streamers/" rel="tag">Media streamers</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/28/hp-exiting-lcd-tv-biz-killing-mediasmart-hdtv-line/">HP exiting LCD TV biz, killing MediaSmart HDTV line?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 28 Oct 2008 12:38:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/23/poll-whats-the-most-youd-pay-for-the-ultimate-htpc/">dedicated HTPC</a> may not be quite as "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/29/alienware-cans-hangar-18-hd-media-server-before-its-time/">mainstream</a>" as it was in years past, but there's still a solid sect of people who want a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/05/poll-do-you-own-plan-to-own-an-htpc/">full-fledged box</a> running beneath their HDTV. There's also a subset of those people with no extra time to build their own. Thus, we present Chester's question:<br /><br />"I'm tired of looking at media streaming options and I've decided I just want a dedicated HTPC connected to my HDTV. I'm not much into PC building, so I was hoping to buy a pre-fabricated unit from a company that sells media PCs. Which is my best option? CableCARD support would be preferred. Thanks for any advice."<br /><br />Time to drop the gloves and speak your minds, people. What HTPC should this fellow splurge on? One of Dell's boxes? Given that both the iPAQ Data Messenger and Voice Messenger were spotted on HP's website <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/20/hp-ipaq-data-messenger-voice-messenger-handhelds-emerge/">last night</a>, we didn't exactly need a press release to affirm their ascent into officialdom, but hey, we'll take it. The two WinMo 6.1-powered handsets will soon be loosed on Vodafone in Europe, and starting next month, prospective consumers can buy in for &pound;399 ($677) / &pound;333 ($565) off-contract; as for the subsidized rates, you'll have to hold your horses for those. If you're just interested in the hands-on video, however, you can mosey on beyond the break and mash play.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/21/hps-ipaq-data-messenger-voice-messenger-get-official-on-vodaf/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HP's iPAQ Data Messenger / Voice Messenger get official on Vodafone, hands-on treatment</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/vodafone/" rel="tag">Vodafone</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/21/hps-ipaq-data-messenger-voice-messenger-get-official-on-vodaf/">HP's iPAQ Data Messenger / Voice Messenger get official on Vodafone, hands-on treatment</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 21 Oct 2008 12:10:00 EST. Looks like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/03/hp-said-to-be-prepping-consumer-minded-ipaq-smartphone/">that rumor</a> was mostly spot on, as two new consumer-minded <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iPAQ/">iPAQ</a> handhelds have emerged on HP's website. Without much fanfare, the Windows Mobile 6.1-powered iPAQ Data Messenger and Voice Messenger have been granted dedicated sites, complete with imagery, specifications and recommended accessories. Starting with the touchscreen-heavy Data Messenger (seen above), you'll find a 2.81-inch LED-backlit display (320 x 240), a full QWERTY slide-out keyboard, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR / WiFi, HSDPA, quad-band GSM support, aGPS, a 3.1-megapixel camera and a microSD card slot. As for the Voice Messenger (pictured after the break), it's packing a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 LED-backlit screen, a 20-key "keyboard" and most everything else already mentioned on its big bro. There's nary a clue on pricing or a release date, but we imagine both of those snippets will reveal themselves shortly.<br /><strong><br />Update:</strong> We just scored an internal HP doc with prices and ship dates -- expect to see the Voice Messenger for &euro;399 ($532) on November 5th and the Data Messenger for &euro;499 ($665) on November 22nd, both on Vodafone in the Netherlands. One more shot of the Data Messenger with the keyboard slid out after the break.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=1412">WMPowerUser</a>]<br /><a href="http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/ho/WF06a/215348-215348-64929-3352590-3352590-3806508.html"><br />Read</a> - HP iPAQ Voice Messenger<br /><a href="http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/ho/WF06a/215348-215348-64929-3352590-3352590-3806501.html">Read</a> - HP iPAQ Data Messenger<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/20/hp-ipaq-data-messenger-voice-messenger-handhelds-emerge/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HP iPAQ Data Messenger / Voice Messenger handhelds emerge</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/20/hp-ipaq-data-messenger-voice-messenger-handhelds-emerge/">HP iPAQ Data Messenger / Voice Messenger handhelds emerge</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 20 Oct 2008 20:53:00 EST. If you've somehow managed to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/16/how-would-you-change-windows-home-server/">hold off</a> from buying one of HP's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/29/hp-responds-to-mediasmart-issues-offers-no-real-solution-at-all/">MediaSmart servers</a> (or, you know, just forgot about your plans to buy one), <em>MissingRemote</em> has a nice writeup explaining the benefits of picking one up versus building your own. The storage junkies over there pitted an EX475 against a "home brewed Frankenstein" and a server built with WHS-specific parts in order to see which of the three would emerge triumphant. In the end, HP's own unit managed to garner the most of their love, which was quite surprising to be honest. Sure, building your own can be a ton of fun, but the EX475 just delivered in every important area for right around the same price as the other two homegrown competitors. Don't believe us? According to "people briefed on the plan," the phone will have both a touchscreen and a keypad and, naturally, it'll run Windows Mobile 6.1 -- oh, and it'll be able to "send and receive emails, and access the Internet." While there's no indication of a price just yet, word is the device will be available in Europe first within the next two months, with a worldwide release to follow sometime thereafter.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gearlog.com/2008/10/hps_new_ipaq_to_be_aimed_and_c.php">Gearlog</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/03/hp-said-to-be-prepping-consumer-minded-ipaq-smartphone/">HP said to be prepping consumer-minded iPAQ smartphone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 03 Oct 2008 15:43:00 EST. After missing its July release target by a country mile, we'd thought the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/05/hps-pearl-er-silver-smartphone/">Silver</a> may have been canned -- but nope, she's alive and well, strutting her stuff for a few privileged hands around the world. The HSDPA 7.2Mbps handset with GPS and WiFi takes the original candybar Pearl's wildly successful format and applies a hearty dose of Windows Mobile Standard -- not a concept that's going to appeal to everyone, but for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/S740/">S740</a> shoppers of the world, a totally viable alternative. So we know <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/Vodafone/">Vodafone</a> has a keen eye on releasing this; anyone else?<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hps-silver-smartphone-in-the-wild/">HP's Silver smartphone in the wild</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hps-silver-smartphone-in-the-wild/#1067142"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2008/10/hp-silver-itw-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hps-silver-smartphone-in-the-wild/#1067141"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2008/10/hp-silver-itw-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hps-silver-smartphone-in-the-wild/#1067140"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2008/10/hp-silver-itw-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hps-silver-smartphone-in-the-wild/#1067139"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2008/10/hp-silver-itw-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hps-silver-smartphone-in-the-wild/#1067138"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2008/10/hp-silver-itw-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/01/hps-silver-smartphone-in-the-wild/">HP's Silver smartphone in the wild</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 01 Oct 2008 13:22:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/CEDIA2008/">CEDIA 2008</a> was a whirlwind of new projectors, HDTVs and all sorts of other wares that home theater freaks just love. As <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/08/cedia-2007-roundup/">always</a>, we were here in the Mile High City covering every minute, but we completely understand if you missed anything. Just in case, we've compiled a summary of what all happened here in Denver, and make sure you head on past the break for the rest. <br /><br /><strong>Hands-ons</strong><br /><br /><a In our recent <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/19/the-media-center-extender-shootout/">roundup of Vista Media Center Extenders</a> we were very disappointed that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/17/hp-mediasmart-connect-brings-digital-media-to-your-hdtv/">HP MediaSmart connect</a> wasn't available in time to go head to head with the rest. Now that the MediaSmart Connect is in hand, we were anxious to try it out and see how it compares and we have to say that with a MSRP of $350 and a street price at just under $300, we had pretty high expectations. Although there is no doubt that it has the nicest exterior and remote of any extender available, we're not sure if those two merits alone help it to live up to its premium price.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-connect/">HP MediaSmart Connect</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-connect/#991594"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/08/hp-msc04lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-connect/#991595"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/08/hp-msc16lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-connect/#991592"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/08/hp-msc01lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-connect/#991580"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/08/hp-msc02lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-connect/#991585"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/08/hp-msc21lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/28/hp-mediasmart-connect-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HP MediaSmart Connect Review</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/reviews/" rel="tag">Reviews</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-pcs/" rel="tag">Media PCs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-streamers/" rel="tag">Media streamers</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/28/hp-mediasmart-connect-review/">HP MediaSmart Connect Review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 28 Aug 2008 16:00:00 EST. Dealer documentation seemingly intended for Rogers dealers has, of course, leaked out onto the interwebs, possibly revealing the entirety of the carrier's third quarter offerings. With the exception of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Bold/">Bold</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/KickStart/">KickStart</a> / Pearl 8220, there's nothing terribly mind-blowing in the mix, though the lineup does include a pretty healthy range of goodies from the low end to the reasonably high. Highlights include the Sony Ericsson W350a music flip, a phone we've already seen <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/15/sony-ericsson-w350-coming-to-atandt-ebay-says-so/">meandering about in AT&amp;T livery</a>, so it comes as little surprise that we'd see it up north as well; the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/10/hps-ipaq-910-smartphone-now-available/comments/13092851/">iPAQ 910c</a> Windows Mobile smartphone from HP; and a refreshed RAZR 2 that'll probably mirror the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/02/the-motorola-razr-2-v9x-for-atandt-brings-gps-non-hideous-color/">V9x</a>. All of these chewy technological morsels launch (in theory, anyway) by the end of September, which really only serves to makes us wonder: what's on tap up there for the holiday season?<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/motorola/" rel="tag">Motorola</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony-ericsson/" rel="tag">Sony Ericsson</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/rogers-wireless/" rel="tag">Rogers Wireless</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/10/rogers-q3-lineup-revealed/">Rogers' Q3 lineup revealed?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 10 Aug 2008 21:02:00 EST. Finally, the 14 people who have been waiting patiently can now get their hands on HP's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ipaq900">iPAQ 910</a> Windows Mobile-based phone. There's not much to say you haven't already read -- the HSDPA, WiFi, and GPS equipped device can be purchased unlocked from HP's online store for the tidy sum of $499.99. They're shipping now... so what are you waiting for?<br /><br />[Thanks, James]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/10/hps-ipaq-910-smartphone-now-available/">HP's iPAQ 910 smartphone now available</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 10 Jul 2008 09:57:00 EST. Yeah, you may be burning that midnight oil, but your weariness isn't the reason you're certain you've seen this thing before. Touted at CES as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/03/hps-new-mediasmart-receiver-does-media-center-extender-and-mor/">MediaSmart Receiver</a>, the re-dubbed MediaSmart Connect is finally available for pre-order. Just as we heard before, this unit takes full advantage of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/06/microsoft-debuts-extenders-for-windows-media-center-adds-divx-a/">Extender for Windows Media Center</a> technology, and although it possesses no internal storage space, it will pull in digital media from around your home (and a variety of online media outlets) and pipe it straight to your HDTV. The unit plays nice with other UPnP- and DLNA-compliant devices and includes 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, an Ethernet port, HDMI / component jacks and support for MPEG2/4, DivX, XviD, WMV, MP3, WMA, AAC, JPEG and BMP files (among others). Prospective buyers can get their order in today for $349.<br /><br />

We first heard about HP's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/05/hps-new-ipaq-lineup-surfaces-with-fresh-photos/">iPAQ 900 / 914 3G Business Messenger</a> in September of last year, and after a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/31/even-more-hp-ipaqs-getting-delayed/">series of delays</a> (which seem to be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/22/hps-ipaq-110-and-210-delayed/">endemic</a> to the iPAQ line), it looks like the device is finally set to start shipping. Nothing much has changed, except that a Windows Mobile 6.1 device with a 2.46-inch display, WiFi, GPS, HSDPA, and a 3 megapixel camera isn't exactly the hot sheets it was almost a year ago. That said, that chubby case hides a 1800mAh battery, which should let enterprise users get their business on for the better part of a full day. Should be shipping around the world starting June 30, although specific worldwide dates will vary.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=96">WMPoweruser</a> and <a href="http://www.phonescoop.com/news/item.php?n=3095">Phone Scoop</a>]<br /><br /><a href="http://www.hp.com/large/campaigns/personal_again/press/ipaq900.html">Read</a> - HP press release<br /><a href="http://google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mobinaute.com%2F143434-ipaq-914-hp-lancer-pdaphone-3g-gps-wm6.html&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;sl=fr&amp;tl=en">Read</a> - Hands-on at Mobinaute<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/10/hp-to-finally-ship-the-ipaq-900-series-business-phone/">HP to finally ship the iPAQ 900 series business phone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 10 Jun 2008 15:47:00 EST. If support from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/12/blu-ray-players-from-panasonic-philips-and-denon-get-divx-cert/">Blu-ray</a> players and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/13/divx-playback-headed-for-the-ps3/">videogame</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/01/xbox-360s-divx-xvid-support-doesnt-include-media-center/">consoles</a> wasn't enough, DivX Certification has snaked its long arm directly into HDTVs, with "over 80 models" from HP and LG slapping on a sticker indicating users can simply plug a USB drive in and play their entirely-legitimately-owned content. Expect that number to grow, since DivX is also working with AMD, Chips and Media, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=Broadcom">Broadcom</a> and Trident to include support in other chipsets powering digital TVs near you. <div align="left">HP's iPAQ 900 series smartphones haven't exactly had the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/31/even-more-hp-ipaqs-getting-delayed/">smoothest of releases</a> ('round these parts at least) since they were first <a href="javascript:void(0);/*1208456089561*/">announced</a> way back in September of last year, but one of 'em has at least managed to recently trickle out into the hands of the lucky folks at the FCC, which could possibly indicate that it's actually nearing a US release. In case you missed it, the Windows Mobile-based phone was previously <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/18/hp-ipaq-910-coming-to-atandt/">hinted as coming to AT&amp;T</a> in its iPAQ 910 incarnation, although the FCC unsurprisingly doesn't have anything to say about that possibility. If you want a better idea of what may be in store, however, you can find plenty of pics of the device (including a peek at its innards) and its complete manual at the link below.<br /> <br /> </div>

There's nothing quite as profoundly unsettling as reading a review about a phone you can't have. For Americans, that's an all-too-common experience -- and thanks to the ongoing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/02/qualcomm-yeah-broadcom-injunction-smarts-a-bit/">Qualcomm / Broadcom drama</a>, even phones that had originally been destined for the colonies have been unceremoniously dropped, destined for regions well beyond the reaches of the legal system. Case in point: HP had originally wanted to bring the interesting <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/06/hps-ipaq-610-gets-demonstrated-on-video/">iPAQ 610 series</a> here, but <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/13/hp-cancels-the-ipaq-610-smartphone-in-the-us/">backed off at the last second</a>. If you really want one, though, you can still finagle one from an importer -- not to mention that countless Windows Mobile fanatics populate areas of the globe friendlier to HP's latest pocket candy -- so Tracy and Matt's Blog took a close look at the 614c, which is now shipping. Although the reviewer found its Windows Mobile 6 load to be plenty speedy, he also discovered that it was a tad on the chunky side -- not to mention that the 3G radio seemed to be way flaky, the screen is too inset to use entirely stylus-free, and the virtual nav wheel embedded in the keypad (arguably the ace up the 610's sleeve) wasn't much fun to use. Nice try, HP, but on second thought, maybe we're not so broken up that you're keeping it out of the States.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/18/hps-not-for-us-ipaq-614-gets-reviewed/">HP's not-for-US iPAQ 614 gets reviewed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 18 Mar 2008 21:01:00 EST. What will it be, the good or the bad news first? How 'bout the good. After an initial rebuff, we finally managed to grab some photos of that exclusive T-Mobile MDA compact IV. You remember: 7.2Mbps HSDPA, GPS, VGA resolution screen, WiFi and 4GB of on-board storage. It'll also launch "mit neuestem Microsoft Betriebssytem" which we can safely assume is Windows Mobile 6.1 at this point. Oh yes, and the bad news. It's only a plastic dummy and our photographs were restricted by a glass cube. Still, this is as close as most of you will get for a long, long time. So apparently HP just has a very special form of hatred for its native soil, because that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/06/hp-introduces-ipaq-600-and-900-windows-mobile-6-phones/">iPAQ 610</a> series with that nifty touch sensitive scroll wheel embedded in the keypad now appears to be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/13/hp-cancels-the-ipaq-610-smartphone-in-the-us/">canceled</a> <em>only</em> in the US. This bittersweet news comes courtesy of British retailer Devicewire, which reports that it'll have examples of the iPAQ 614 available to its customers as soon as next Monday for the princely sum of &pound;389.99 (about $765). That's fine, though, HP, whatever. We didn't want your stupid iPAQ anyway.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.coolsmartphone.com/news3870.html">CoolSmartphone</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/15/hp-ipaq-610-series-soldiers-on-outside-us/">HP iPAQ 610 series soldiers on outside US</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 15 Feb 2008 15:03:00 EST. Ah, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/06/hp-introduces-ipaq-600-and-900-windows-mobile-6-phones/">iPAQ 610</a>. You were so close, and yet... so far away. According to a handful of tipsters, after a round of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/31/even-more-hp-ipaqs-getting-delayed/">delays</a>, HP has decided to cancel the release of its upcoming Windows Mobile smartphone, the 610 (also known as the iPAQ 614, 614c and 600). The company didn't give a lot of information, though they did state that, "due to recent legal issues between suppliers of mobile phone technologies, HP has decided not to offer the iPAQ 610 Business Navigator to U.S. customers as previously planned." It's unclear whether this means the phone will be missing from shelves worldwide, but it certainly won't be popping up on these shores anytime soon.<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]<br /><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/13/hp-cancels-the-ipaq-610-smartphone-in-the-us/">HP cancels the iPAQ 610 smartphone in the US</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 13 Feb 2008 23:49:00 EST. What would you do if the US patent office gave you the go-ahead on a far-reaching, non-specific application filed for a "mobile entertainment and communication device"? If your answer was that you would immediately draw up lawsuits against almost every major electronics manufacturer that even looked at a smartphone funny, you get a cookie. Yes folks, as impossible as it is to believe, the holders of the aforementioned patent have just sued Apple, Nokia, RIM, Sprint, AT&amp;T, HP, Motorola, Helio, HTC, Sony Ericsson, UTStarcomm, and Samsung... amongst others. So eager was this company to sue, in fact, that legal papers were filed a day before the patent was granted, and subsequently had to re-submitted. The real sucker-punch here is that the patent simply combines a list of prior technologies jumbled into one product, a practice which has recently been ruled against by the Supreme Court. Still, we doubt it will stop the holders from trying to nab a few dollars in settlements, staying the work of real innovators, and generally making a mockery of our patent system. There aren't many thing more exciting to a geek, then walking around the show floor at the largest electronics show in the US of A, but unfortunately the consumer electronics show isn't for consumers. So we took the time to snap up as many pics as we could of every booth that we thought was interesting. While many of the booths are reused each year, the devices are not. Some of the booths are backed to the point that it's hard to walk around, while others are desolate. So if you want to live vicariously through us, click through and check out all the coolness.<br /><br /><a target="_blank" title="View DISH Network's CES 2008 Booth tour on Engadget HD" href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/10/dish-network-booth-tour/">DISH Network's CES 2008 Booth tour</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View NBC Universal's CES 2008 booth tour on Engadget HD" href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/10/nbc-universal-booth-tour/">NBC Universal's CES 2008 booth tour</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Blu-ray's CES 2008 booth tour on Engadget" href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/10/blu-rays-ces-2008-booth-tour/">Blu-ray's CES 2008 booth tour</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View HD DVD's CES 2008 booth tour on Engadget" href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/10/hd-dvd-booth-tour/">HD DVD's CES 2008 booth tour</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Samsung's CES 2008 booth tour on Engadget" href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/09/samsungs-ces-2008-booth-tour/">Samsung's CES 2008 booth tour</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View HP's CES 2008 booth tour on Engadget" href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/09/hps-ces-2008-booth-tour/">HP's CES 2008 booth tour</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Sling Media's CES 2008 booth tour on Engadget" href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/09/sling-medias-ces-2008-booth-tour/">Sling Media's CES 2008 booth tour</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View XStreamHD's CES 2008 booth tour on Engadget" href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/09/xstreamhds-ces-2008-booth-tour/">XStreamHD's CES 2008 booth tour</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Microsoft's CES 2008 booth tour on Engadget" href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/08/microsofts-ces-2008-booth-tour/">Microsoft's CES 2008 booth tour</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Sony's CES 2008 booth tour on Engadget" href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/08/sonys-ces-2008-booth-tour/">Sony's CES 2008 booth tour</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Philips's CES 2008 booth tour on Engadget" href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/08/philipss-ces-2008-booth-tour/">Philips's CES 2008 booth tour</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Pioneer's CES 2008 booth tour on Engadget" href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/08/pioneers-ces-2008-booth-tour/">Pioneer's CES 2008 booth tour</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View LG's CES 2008 booth tour on Engadget" href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/08/lgs-ces-2008-booth-tour/">LG's CES 2008 booth tour</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Hitachi's CES 2008 booth tour on Engadget" href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/08/hitachis-ces-2008-booth-tour/">Hitachi's CES 2008 booth tour</a><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/blu-ray/" rel="tag">Blu-ray</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/dvrs/" rel="tag">DVRs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hd-dvd/" rel="tag">HD DVD</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-streamers/" rel="tag">Media streamers</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/players/" rel="tag">Players</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/set-top-boxes/" rel="tag">Set-top boxes</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/panasonic/" rel="tag">Panasonic</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/philips/" rel="tag">Philips</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/pioneer/" rel="tag">Pioneer</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/samsung/" rel="tag">Samsung</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sharp/" rel="tag">Sharp</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/toshiba/" rel="tag">Toshiba</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/12/ces-2008-hd-booth-tours/">CES 2008: HD booth tours</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 12 Jan 2008 04:16:00 EST. <div align="left">Wow, just when we thought Vodafone might not have any more secrets, a couple more were dragged out of the bag. Seems BoyGenius' presentation <em>extraordinaire </em>wasn't complete without laying out exactly what can be expected this year on the Windows Mobile front. As you can see there are a couple new tasty morsels such as a HSDPA tablet with GPS and WiFi -- could be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/03/26/htc-shift-the-cellphone-company-finally-goes-umpc/">HTC Shift</a> -- an unknown HSDPA slider with GPS and WiFi as well as the previously mentioned <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/05/palm-drucker-in-the-mix-better-only-than-zeppelin-among-pal/">Palm Drucker</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/05/vodafone-roadmap-reveals-hp-oak-all-gloss-no-wood/">HP Oak</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/05/hps-pearl-er-silver-smartphone/">HP Silver</a>, and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/05/palm-wanda-is-the-treo-500v-successor/">Palm Wanda</a>. Big year ahead for Vodafone on the business user front, and we're stoked to catch these things as they start to land, so see ya in Q2 2008 friends.</div>

<div align="left">HP's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/10/hulger-offers-up-pricey-wooden-ziricote-phone/">Oak</a> makes an appearance in the relentless binge of new handset madness that is the Vodafone roadmap. The HP Oak delivers many of the baubles we've come to expect from Windows Mobile devices, things like 7.2 Mbps HSDPA, quad-band GSM, qwerty keyboard, a touchscreen, and even GPS have found there way in. Other connectivity options include the almost standard WiFi and Bluetooth, with chatter time listed as 3.5 hours and 360 hours standby. We're feeling a lot of similarities between this fella and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/07/htc-p4550-kaiser-gets-name-meet-the-htc-tytn-ii/">HTC TyTN II</a>, but the HP gets the puffy rainbow sticker -- with prancing Pegasus, of course -- for opting to add that ultra-handy dialpad on the front. Oak's due date is set for September 2008 at roughly $500.</div>
