Daewoo's first Blu-ray drive appeared online a few days ago but we still don't know much about it. Apparently it was shown at IFA 2006 but the only info we can dig up is what's on the display card and according to that, you are peeping a Blu-ray drive/recorder. Now, we aren't quite sure if that implies a built-in hard drive or the Blu-ray drive actually records but nether the less, it's got a built-in DVB-T tuner so it probably does recorded onto something. The rest of the specs are right in the norm of a first gen-device with the notable exception of a DV input which would be very handy if in fact this unit does record onto the Blu-ray disc. Because of the lack of info, we cannot give you a launch date nor price, but if something comes through we will certainly update you.

Jericho uses the tried-and-true storyline of a Kansas town on the day of a nuclear explosion that cuts off all communication. Never heard that one before? Try Kidnapped, the kidnapping-show-that's-not-Vanished, this time spending a season on the effort to recover an abducted child. Criminal Minds and CSI: NY are also back for another run starting this evening on CBS. Along with new episodes of Bones and Justice, there's all the sleuthing and mystery you could want. The Tigers and White Sox continue to do battle on ESPN-HD while Arrested Development continues it's run on HDNet.

With the Tokyo Game Show and their X06 event in Spain coming in the next few days, they plan on making over 100 pieces of content available including HD video from the show. Since our passes to the shows appear to have been lost in the mail, we're definitely feeling this. Add in the ability to queue up 5 downloads at a time added in the Spring dashboard update and it's even easier to get everything posted for the next nine days. Make sure that you do because some of it will disappear forever after September 29th. We're still playing the Lost Planet demo from E3, as good as reading about all the HD gaming coming our way is, we'll take actually experiencing it at home any day.

Returning shows with season premieres include fellow CBS shows NCIS and The Unit, Boston Legal on ABC as well as Law & Order CI and Law & Order: SVU on NBC. That's not even mentioning new episodes of Dancing with the Stars, House and Standoff. The only way HDTV tonight could be better is if we had some sports...oh wait we do, with Tigers and White Sox playing a game that could decide the fate of the AL Central and wild card race. Just to get things kicked off properly, Cinemax is airing Saving Private Ryan in HD just after 5. What more could you ask for?

Fox 66 was waiting on their antennas building permit for a couple of years then once the antenna went up, there was issues with licensing. Who cares now though as they are finally up and running so local viewers like myself can watch the Detroit Lions loss in high-def. Comcast viewers can find the station on 234.

Also coming to HD DVD that day are Tim Burton's The Corpse Bride (previously announced for Blu-ray), and both Charlie & the Chocolate Factory (2006 starring Johnny Depp) and the original Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory starring Gene Wilder. Batman Begins and Charlie & the Chocolate Factory both feature IME sequences, taking viewers into the creative processes of the directors of each movie while the movie continues to play in the background. In addition Warner will release both Syriana and 16 Blocks on Blu-ray the same day, both previously released on HD DVD, giving them over 50 movies total released on both formats. Other than the two IME-enhanced titles all will have the same extras as their DVD counterparts, the HD DVDs carry an MSRP of $28.99 and the Blu-ray discs $34.99. So far Warner's dual-release strategy seems to be working out well as they've got some of the best titles on each format, best features, and have been able to take their VC-1 encoded movies from HD DVD to Blu-ray and vice versa without trouble.

There is only one title we're excited; Jay and Silent Bob Strike back. Sony has a few good titles this week and Universal releases the classic Backdraft.

With another studio releasing titles for Blu-ray and Fox right around the corner we'd expect Blu-ray to catch up to and surpass HD DVD in the shear number of titles, but after two months, we aren't so sure when this might happen.

This brings the total to HD DVD 71 vs Blu-ray 45.

We expect to add The CW when they begin broadcasting while we'll need to think about MyNetworkTV, right now they only have two shows (Desire & Fashion House) which are both horrifically bad. Our need to list high definition programming vs. our need to ignore these two shows like the plague has left us very conflicted. Tonight however, we have no such issues, NBC Sunday Night Football continues with Dallas at Washington while Fox brings a new episode of The War at Home. The Red Sox and the Yankees continue their grudge match on ESPN-HD and HDNet contributes a double shot of Ice-T, on Sound Off with Matt Pinfield and later in concert with group Sex, Money & Guns.

We didn't get a chance to check it out here, but TV Squad did in SD, and complained that the show wasn't letterboxed and many bits of text on the screen ran off on the edges. While we feel for our SD brethren, one of the many complaints we hear frequently is that shows aren't framed properly to take advantage of widescreen HDTVs so if they err a bit on the side of 16:9 that's ok with us. Also this morning was the first episode of the Today show in HD, complete with new set and host Meredith Viera. With The View, GMA, the Today show and rumors about Oprah going HD we may have reason to start doing all-day HDTV Listings.

What we're watching: More premieres tonight, as Dancing with the Stars returns in 720p this time, followed by an all new show Men in Trees. Something about a woman writing a book about finding men in Alaska where she is outnumbered 10-1, we'll watch cuz it's in in HD, not because our wives/SOs have the remote.

They have only added a few new high-def movie trailers to their site and even though today might be a bad day for bandwidth (for Apple - not us), ah, what the heck. First up is Driving Lessons staring one of the boys from those popular Harry Potter flicks. The clip of course looks good in high-def, we love the transitions, but the movie looks surprisingly good. Give it a chance. But if you only have time in your busy day to watch one of these high definition clips, you must watch A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. Wow. Looks amazing in HD but to be honest, this movie is going to be all about the content and most people would be happy with a 480i version if the flick turns out to be half as good as the preview. Lets Go To Prison looks funny and you might just need a laugh or two after Saints. If you are new to this, start at the 1080p option if you have a 'beefy' computer, but more then likely you are going to need to drop down to ether the 720p or 480p option if the system is a little older. That's fine though, the 720p and 480p clips still look great. Enjoy!

Warner Home Video has the HD DVD releases of Space Cowboys and Lethal Weapon 2 hitting the shelves today and the eagle-eyed (or geeky) customers will notice something isn't right with the specs on the back of the box. These two titles are being sold as 1080p Standard Definition 16x9 2.4:1. The 1080p and 16x9 is fine but the whole Standard Definition and 2.4:1 just doesn't sit right with us. Now correct us if we are wrong here, cause we are a lot, but shouldn't that read High Definition and 2.40:1. Keep in mind these are HD DVDs and 1080p is definitely high-def. Ah, what do we know? These companies are professionals and they must know something we don't.

Dr. Seuss is coming to HD DVD and he is going to make all the little children cry when he steals Christmas. The Ron Howard/Jim Carry classic is set to come out on November 21 loaded with Dobly Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 on a 1.85:1 1080p disc. This title is going to be present via a combo disc that is sure to make parents happy as the disc will play in the family room's HD DVD player and in the portable player as they traverse snow and ice to go see Grandma for the holiday season.

Sky HD has worked out an arrangement with LucasFilm to allow all six episodes to be shown via the provider. There isn't any announcement of when or where but you know, who cares? All that matters is all of our peeps over the UK, that is with Sky HD, will be able to check out one of the best movie sagas in high definition just like us here in the States. But we are sure you would like to know when the films are coming so you can plan your day around the 15 hours of George Lucas goodness and we will let you know as soon as we find out.

They may not release the most titles or even the best, but no one can say that they are not contributing to the format. Next up to be added to the calender is Little Man for a day-and-date release of November 7. The other title this time around is the CGI family flick of Monster House on October 24. Both of these titles are void of the pretty VC-1 codex that oh so many people are waiting for but Sony said, nah, these discs are encoded in MPEG-2/1080p. Both of 'em sport an MSRP of $38.99 but as history has taught us, that price will be cut nearly in half when they hit the shelves.

A combination of chick flicks dramas, comedy, and family fare for this round, as opposed to the other studios' more action-oriented titles. According to High-Def Digest the info was contained on a small retail marketing flier, so it's short on technical specs. We're looking forward to seeing how their first wave looks when it comes out next week.

  • Casanova
  • Flightplan
  • Goal! The Dream Begins
  • Sky High
  • The Wild

Many networks are running something 9/11/01related, whether it is ABC's controversial (and not-HD, despite being listed as such on their website) Path to 9/11, HDNet's Slammin' Iron following steelworkers in the rebuilding effort, or Discovery HD airing The Flight that Fought Back followed by Ted Koppel: The Price of Security. Of course, if you're not all football'd out for this weekend (and who ever is?), there is a Monday Night Football doubleheader featuring the Vikings at Redskins followed by Chargers at Raiders. INHD2 has something we haven't seen before (now that many of us don't have it) with On the Run: The Elusive Mr. Wee as law enforcement tracks a fugitive posing as a successful businessman.

Update: As Rob reminded us below, Wheel of Fortune & Jeopardy kick off their HD broadcasts tonight as well, however, like Star Trek, you probably won't be able to see them in HD yet because most stations don't have the ability to store a syndicated high definition show.

We're not sure where the Blu-ray love is this week, maybe they are taking the week off in preparation for Disney's first titles that are to be released next week.

There are some great movies here, that are without a doubt classics, but we are still waiting for those new A list titles we were all promised by both sides and neither have yet to deliver.

This brings the total to HD DVD 68 vs Blu-ray 37.

The first time around we agreed with his reasons just not in the way they were ordered, and the same thing goes for this time too. In truth we just have an issue with number one and two; flip-flop those and we are on board 100%. Price is important but there needs to be more programing. Retail salesmen can chime in when we say people are more frightened by the amount of, or lack of, programming than anything else. If a person is going to spend X amount of money on something, they expect to use it more often than not. Lack of high-def programming is more likely to signal a dip in HDTV sales than the price.

CBS's The NFL Today show will go HD. Although the article doesn't say when, we can only assume it will be today. This upgrade is to coincide with their new studio and a new host James Brown. This is the second NFL Pre-game show to go HD after ESPN's, no Fox is only in Fox Widescreen not true HD.

We hope so for the sake of total HD domination but the source of this info is a bit sketchy. There is a good amount info from this thread (and website) but, still, we just don't know. There is something about information coming from a random forum without a source that makes this information, er, shady. According to the post however, Oprah is going 16:9 SD in January '07 and full HD the following September. Now that The View is high-def and it looks like Oprah is going sometime within the next year, women are now a prime target for HDTVs.

Troy Smith, Ted Ginn Jr., Limas Sweed, Selvin Young and all the rest, some of the best players in college football will be on display tonight, if you're a sports fan it is the only option. Well...not the only option, there's also NASCAR Racing on TNT, the US Open Women's Final on CBS, Georgia vs. South Carolina on ESPN-HD, and MLS Soccer on HDNet, but you know what our choice is. If you absolutely must have watch something non-sports tonight, you can catch four episodes of Weeds on Showtime or The Dukes of Hazzard on Cinemax.

Wal-Mart is hoping that with a little bit of advertising targeting the Monday Night Football crowd that eventually someone will. The big giant massive box retailer is going to try to throw their giant weight around and force their way into the HDTV arena currently owned by Best Buy and Circuit City. Will it work? Yup. They did the same thing a few years ago when they over took Toys-R-Us as the number one retailer of children's toys. We don't think many of our readers descend down to the sub-culture of Wal-Mart to buy an HDTV but many of their current shoppers will.

You know, kind of like when Sidney Bristo (Alias) is racing down an exhaust vent to 'disarm' a satellite gizmo on a random rocket just before the launch and therefore the utter distruction of the world but the rocket they show is the Saturn V used in the Apollo program. These distractions could be minor like how the rocks just don't look like rocks or you can clearly see a sailboat off in the distance when a group of people are suppose to be Lost. HDTV doesn't help these issues ether as that extra resolution can ether make or break your viewing experience. Emmy and Telewest award-winning set designer Eve Stewart understands this and indicated that filming in high-def presents new challenges with the likes that have not been seen since the advent of color television. A suvey conducted bt Telewest found that 23% of people will go as far to change the station if the show has an unconvincing or unrealistic set. We don't know about going that far but we do like it when that easter eggs shows that HDTV rocks.

MHD is all about music not some reality TV show where the grandparents of some teenage girl all sit on a bus trying to decide how to spend $120,000 on her 13th birthday. No, MHD is like the MTV of old, when music was king video killed the radio star and that is the way it is going to stay too according to MTV's senior vice president and GM, Eric Sherman. This station is going to stay all about the music. There isn't going to be any reality TV shows, documentaries, or even award shows in high-def because it has little to nothing to do with HD. Cool, now if we can get back a little Beavis and Butthead to fill in the commercial breaks here and there, it would be just like the good 'ol MTV.

We saw it with Sportscenter, GMA and soon on the "Today" show. But this week we saw a new era of CBS news from arguably the HD leader, but no HD for Katie Couric and the CBS Evening news. Our friends over at HDTV Magazine had a chance to ask CBS's Vice President of Advanced Technology/Engineering, Robert Seidel what was up and he had a pretty good explanation. Basically he doesn't see the point of pouring all the resources into a 30 minute show with only 16 minutes a day of HD, so instead they are dedicating those resources to local news around the country which produce as much as 8 hours a day. Although there are a few people lucky enough to watch their local news in HD most of us are still living in the SD news world.

Start? You would think that the number one market in the country would already of had their local news in HD, but nope, this is going to be the first one in the market. Wouldn't it make sense to produce an example station for other affiliates across the nation to follow? Ah, what do we know anyway? WNBC is going to produce 28 hours a week of news and local programming, including the movie review show Reel Talk and sports show Mike'd Up. So far, the station has only retrofitted the studio and helicopter with the pricey cams, but when more of 'em trickle in over the next few months, programming will follow. Alright New Yorkers, are you ready to see your city's highs and lows like only the local news can portray -- but now it's in high definition.
