no "region defeat" ability? egad! that's why i was waiting for this player, so I could replace the Oppo 983 Upscaling DVD player with a blu-ray player... sad news indeed.

I'll wait with fingers crossed. (When I called Oppo to order a the 983, customer services tells me, "..the player is only region 1, but 'you could find ways to defeat the region and make it universal by other online websites.' )

If not, I'll see no need to yet replace my Samsung Duo for the main player as I have quite a huge collection of HD-DVD as well.

so sad...
I only have one question - All DLP's to date have used "wobulation" to project a 1080p picture. In essence, this is horizontal interlacing, as opposed to vertical interlacing; how they've gotten away with the 1080p moniker is suspect to me. maybe better called (1080p/2)?

I'd be interested to note if the set also uses the wobulation technique or is it actually 1080p
yep, I agree 100%.
I own a Treo700p and a partner has the 700wx. After setting up the 700wx, I thanked goodness that I had the 700p. windows mobile is "weak" and "clumsy" in my estimation.
I've been waiting awhile for the Pro, and you can imagine the disappointment to find it's only WM. Guess I'll wait for the next model.
hhhmmmm.... Samsung STILL not able to get onboard decoding for DTS-HD MA!?!... what the....
I'd be careful Korey to be sure what your Dad meant before posting such a comment, because a VP words mis quoted on an open forum could cost him his job ...
Hey, JB,
If you'd like to pass along the 5000, let me know. I intend to pick up one for a non-A/Vphile friend who doesn't care as long as it plays both HD/BD.

The upgrade should fix the problem...so I'm holding out hoping it does indeed - if so, a mighty fine player it'll be, indeed.

But, i gotta say, the 7.1 uncompressed sure gives me excitement from my old Denon5800. too bad BD is putting out more titles DTSHDMA as opposed to Uncompressed PCM.
Just tho't I'd update you guys...
got the disc today... it wasn't the update we're all hoping for.
It asked me if I wanted to update my v1.2 to version 1.0... ???? go figure.

I had this discussion with the rep on Saturday and told him I'd already downloaded v1.2 with no problems. He said, "don't worry, this will fix each problem you discussed..."

Come to find out, Samsung's CSR department on Saturday's is outsourced. They couldn't even see my account or my serial number without me telling THEM what it was....

Okay, back to the drawing board. I'll try to get someone during the week and see when the real update will be shipped.

by the by, since the BD UP5500 is now cancelled, and the 5000 can be had at $499, I'd say if you definitely want a Duo, best get it now as after May Samsung will stop production of the 5000...and if you're like me with the need for the 7.1 analog out, you'll be out of luck after May!
Well,
I tried accessing the Net for American Gangstar in its webenable features and could not when the movie first came out.
Then, I downloaded the v1.2 on Sat.
Played the movie, and intermittently was not able to access the next. Connection kept breaking. But, eventually all went smoothly.

Still not able to view Die Hard 4 or Fantanstic 4 - Rise.

Spoke to a rep at Samsung who says they're shipping a disc in the next 7 - 10 business days that not only solves the problem with the movies, but also enables internal decoding of DTS-HD-MA, and True HD.

We'll I'll believe it when the disc gets here.

okay,
just plugged it in ... able to download update no problem. Gotta figure out what's coming out of the audio stream.... it plays Resident Evil series no problems. Plays all current WEB enabled content from HD DVD rather smoothly.
Gotta say, though, kinda sad, but HDDVD disc menus and content are fantastic... BD seems to be in the dark ages comparatively.... Sad HDDVD seems to be headed down the tubes.
anybody have a sight that describes what's coming out of the audio stream on BDUP5000 if selecting "Bitstream" or "PCM"?
No matter what I select my Receiver has ALWAYS reported DTS. (PCM, DD EX 5.1; DTS ES Discrete - DD, DTS....doesn't matter... always reports DTS... don't know if BD discs aren't flagged properly [HD-DVD discs don't seem to have this problem on Sammy] or if its the "Bitstream Reencode"....
Manual goes out of its way to not say what audio codecs are playing when....
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I have a MacBook Pro and an Xbox 360 and I would like to get a 20- to 24-inch display that will support both devices. The speakers should be inbuilt, or there should be an aux out on the display to hook up external speakers. Help! Please!"
