The Microsoft HD DVD interactive layer is now know HDi and not iHD. This was changed on August 31st.
As well as upscaling any input to 1080i to the component output it will also upscale any input to 1080p and output it via HDMI.

While it does not have HDMI 1.3 it will accept 8 channel PCM via HDMI so if you have a decoder for Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD in you HD DVD or BD player you will get the lossless audio.

I can not wait to get my unit next week. It ships on Sep 18th in Australia :)
Sony does make somthing like this, the new HDD AVCHD unit the HDR-SR1. The picture quality is extremely good and the unit is very easy to use.

Apples DVD Studio Pro does support creating HD DVD discs. DVDSP v4.0.2 was compliant with 0.9 HD Spec and v4.0.3 was updated to the 1.0 spec. The software only supports a subset of the full spec, eg. no iHD support, but can create compliant HD DVD discs on standard DVD R media.
Addex is correct the large displays use a dual-link DVI cable to carry the extra information. Dual-link can be supported on a HDMI type B connector.
