Here in Singapore where there are only 4.5million of us, Sony will be launching the PS3 here for S$799 which is equivalent to US$522. Hence, I don't think that argument of Aussie being a smaller country makes any sense at all.
Actually HDTV broadcasts started in Singapore since June 9th with the broadcast of the World Cup in HD format through the cable operator in Singapore. They are conducting a seperate HD broadcast trial for a similar 6 month period and is said to be working with VOOM to provide further HD content after the World Cup ends.
