Google uses it's products to drive standards forward. Google would rather not have to maintain separate pieces of software to get what it wants, since not every user bothered to download Google Gears.

But, the rewards Google can get from localized ads due to the Geolocation API in HTML5 probably makes all the development time for Google Gears well worth the effort.
Is HTC going to make non-phone hardware so people who already have a phone can get in on this action?
Where's the US cover?!?!
Heck, where's the JP cover?
@Eternity Not from Intel until 2011. Which means it won't hit laptops until then because OEMs are unlikely to spend more money on extra chips.
@B3astofthe3ast I thought dumps come after development is completed, and the OS has been released, and not before.
So, can someone tell me the easiest way to use Google Maps Navigation that doesn't involve owning a phone? I already have an iPhone, but it looks like Apple is going to hold up the app for as long as possible.
Did you just answer your own question? O_O
@SC40095 There's an even bigger problem, as you'll need an Internet connection for Google Maps Navigation to work with an iPod Touch. It streams all it's map data from the Internet, none of it is stored locally. I do see Google partnering with some hardware manufacturers and wireless carriers to create a dedicated PND that ONLY runs Google Maps Navigation and charge $10 a month to use it.
I'm just surprised that people have to pay for a monthly fee when AT&T is using YOUR internet connection. Does the box at least come free?
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I am looking for a device that will stream sound from one source to several recipients. For example, I want to stream sound from my TV or stereo to my phone or MP3 player that has radio and Bluetooth capabilities. I have looked into radio transmitters and they seem like a decent choice, but I can't find one that uses external power (USB or from the plug) and I would want one with a transmit range of around 50 meters. Thanks!"
