I'll get the popcorn
When shopping for a TV I took my 9 year old daughter to several stores and at each store asked her, "Which one has the best picture?" Every single time she picked a plasma. That was enough of an unbiased opinion for me. Besides, she's got sharper eyes. We bought a Panasonic plasma and have never for a second regretted it.
If you are looking for a high quality picture, support for all the audio codecs, decent load times (although not the best) and are not into streaming stuff I'd recommend the Panasonic DMP-BD60. It is a solid, no nonsense player at a comparatively good price.
I picked up an Elite VSX-01TXH direct from Pioneer in that price range last December. I think if you shop around you can find one under $500.
Immediately after setting up our new plasma we attached it to the wall with a Safety 1st TV lock. It still allows me to turn the TV from side to side if I need to access the back of the TV or reposition it but it isn't going to tip over on the kids. Considering the size of these things, the expense of an anchor or locking device is a very small price to pay for piece of mind.
Maybe I'm just the oddball here but the experience in my household has been quite the opposite of this generalization.
We have had a PS3 and a Wii in the house for quite some time.
The Wii gets so much use I'm wondering when we are going to wear it out.
The PS3 on the other hand sees very little use for games and we don't even
use if for blu-ray very often as we have a large library of DVDs that we prefer
to watch on our standalone upscaling DVD player.
I often have to fight the wife, kids & their friends for the living room TV because
they are on the Wii. In terms of entertainment for $ the PS3 has been less of a good investment for me.
Would I like an HD Wii? Sure. Has anyone in my house complained about its lack of HD support so far? No.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I have a MacBook Pro and an Xbox 360 and I would like to get a 20- to 24-inch display that will support both devices. The speakers should be inbuilt, or there should be an aux out on the display to hook up external speakers. Help! Please!"
