To JimC,

People buy HDTV for many reasons. The main reason is "everyone else is getting it, so should we". Second reason is that it is just not easy to buy SDTV anymore. You go into BestBuy and you will see tons of LCD, plasma, and occasionally DLP, but you cannot see a tube TV.

Content wise, you can still use HDTV for TV, in case people forget. OTA programming, cable, satellite etc. Lots of HD content there.

You can also play Xbox 360, PS3 games, both of which are HD gaming consoles. You know, you do not really have to watch Blu-Ray if you have a PS3. There are games for it.

And you decide to buy a Blu-Ray player, that is an option too. Good for you.
I never thought you can round things anyway you like.

maybe I am ignorant.
Rounding up 1.3333333.... should still be 1.33, not 1.34.

This is like 3rd grade math in elementary school. Jeez.
Actually the 2.5 million number is questionable as well. See the link here:
http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6613790.html

As of 11/11/2008 (29 months after BR launch), "Currently, the U.S. Blu-ray install base totals 1.5 million set-tops and 5.5 million PlayStation 3 consoles."

Anyway, as many have stated, PS3 is eating the stand-alone BR player sales. We will have a better picture in a few months.
I came across this site: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/cemadvdsales.html

According to CEA, since the launch in April 1997 till the end of 1999, 5.4 million DVD players were sold. And in the first two years (from 04 1997 to 03 1999, 1.8 million DVD players were sold.

Off-topic:

How are the replies arranged on EngadgetHD? Why am I seeing the order of some replies changed everytime?
I tend to agree with Darren for the most part of his post.

However, I do think, graphically, BR is not only marginally better than DVD. It is much better.

But People DO need HDTV to change from DVD to BR. For the transition from VHS to DVD, your TV needed not to be upgraded.

Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"What is the best wireless surround sound speaker solution? I have a home theater where running wires is just not feasible. I have my own speakers, so I don't want a system that has speakers with integrated wireless. I've done a far amount of research and have only come across a few companies that even offer a reasonable solution: KEF, Kenwood and Rocketfish. Is there anything else out there? What do you recommend? Thank you!"
