whats the big deal about them? what makes them better than an iPhone or Android?

This thing has a lame 1GB of built in memory, lame apps / developer community and from what the online demos show the OS isn't all that great.

Why so you have to wait for updates to get pushed to your phone?

no thanks, I rather just click that update button in iTunes and get it instantly.

I think the problem is that Apple and tech fans in general expected much more from Google.

Android is a great idea but I'm sure many would agree that its not ready for prime time. Google left way too much of Android for developers to finish.

I can only imagine what a nightmare it will be for an average consumer to get any form of customer service when their 3rd party email app crashes their phone.

T-Mobile points to HTC, HTC points to Google, Google points to the developer, and round and round they go.

Just to re-cap the G1

- Does not have multi-touch enabled
- Can not download Amazon music over Edge or 3G, WiFi only.
- Does not have built in memory other than a 1GB SD card so you have to buy an 8GB or 16GB SD card.
- Has no video player
- Requires a GMail account and can only sync to 1 account
- Everything gets saved to the 'cloud', which is fine until you dont have a connection or Google servers are down
- No paid apps until next year
- No headphone jack
- No Desktop sync - see cloud note above
- Crappy battery life - good thing you can swap out that battery
- Accelerometer only works with the screen flipped out (WTF?)
- Relies on developers for just about everything which is fine if you like hunting around for even the most basic apps.

Sure the open nature of Android could prove to be a game changer but it can also end up as not much more than a geeks sandbox just like Ubuntu/Linux.

Time will tell if it works out for Google - I think they placed way too much of the burden on developers when they should have spent more time setting the ground work themselves.

wow thats lame Brad. Did you ever think that this is a phone and not a computer. The large part of the people (non-geeks) buying the iphone wouldnt know that they left apps running. Then after leaving 10-15 apps running the phone would crash and they would blame apple. I think this happens now with WiMo phones and people bitch about Microsoft when its really just the user leaving apps running.

Push alerts should solve a lot of the need to have apps run in the background. Apple promised developers access to this feature this year. Once that feature is available I dont know that there is much need for apps to run in the background on a phone.

By the way the iPhone has a kick ass processor, way better than the majority of smart phones on the market.
