"(sounds like someone's bitter about HD DVD and taking it out on Blu-ray owners to us)"

I'm not a big fan of the Mummy series either, but I do rather suspect it has more to do with the new Mummy film coming out on August 1st than anything else. The anti-Blu execs have been given the shove at Universal.
Only that you might well have a file in xvid format, and this saves you re-encoding it to .mp4.
It's a bit fiddly, but you don't need to re-encode .mkv files from scratch; just repackage the video in a .mp4 and if necessary convert the audio to stereo AAC. They'll play then.
Like a fool, I've been waiting for the HD-DVD release here, so I've not seen it yet.

But certainly my favorite bit from the trailer, if that counts, is the overhead shot of the ambassador about to be kicked into the well. Gorgeously framed.
1080p is nice, but not that important if you've got a decent deinterlacer in the display device. What I'm really after from a HD-DVD player is the XA2's 6 channel analogue output; does this have it?
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I am looking for a device that will stream sound from one source to several recipients. For example, I want to stream sound from my TV or stereo to my phone or MP3 player that has radio and Bluetooth capabilities. I have looked into radio transmitters and they seem like a decent choice, but I can't find one that uses external power (USB or from the plug) and I would want one with a transmit range of around 50 meters. Thanks!"
