my xa1 still upconverts beautifully and CDs sound damn good on the thing. Doesn't completely sound like a losing format to me, just scarce ;)

I wanna rock out with my.....mullet out!
the other Tron release was a lame-o lazy ass port (no way to turn up the speed on the thumbstick? c'mon!) like many of the XBLA ones. I will be passing. For $5-10 you'd think they could actually make these ports a little more customized for the console.
HD discs ARE marginally better than upscaled DVDs, face it!

While the picture is definitely better, there are plenty of drawbacks that keep them from truly being a "superior" format: bugs, glitches, slow boot-up times, incompatibilities, constant firmware updates, audio codec confusion, picture quality inconsistencies, poor mastering, sh!tty mastering, lack of next-gen features...do I need to keep going? HD DVD and BD have been out for over a year, they aren't going to be much better this year...they shot and missed. Let's move on...
I hope they have another game ready to giveaway because XBL has been shite all weekend.
ok, Ben is pretty much a BD poster boy [have fun with your obsolete BD 1.0], but this is piss poor even for Engadget.
The first line is, "We must say we didn't see this coming" yet only a few posts earlier is the headline by Steven Kim, "In face of release announcements, last week's HD DVD sales sink to 15%." The same Nielsen line you show. Wow, crack team of bloggers there. Teamwork isn't your forte, eh?

"it's a shame to see engadget issue a "report" based purely on comments posted on forums."

This is a blog site, not Reuters. Do you prefer to get all your HD news from Sony, Toshiba, and the BDA?
yet another hardware problem in a sea of High Def Movie problems. Spazzoid Blu fanboys may spout off about winning the war, but so far ALL of HDM is a loser. Disc problems, HDMI problems, codec problems, mastering problems, hardware problems, profile problems, disc pressing problems, I mean c'mon, HD movies have been out for over a year! Get your sh!t together or HD DVD AND Blu are gonna wind up like UMD, SACD, and DVD Audio.

COME ON!!!!!
ummm maybe I am misunderstanding the hubbub, but in San Diego the cable co.s have to carry any basic tier channel (HD) as unencrypted. So if Jimbo gets a new HDTV and has regular cable, he plugs in the TV and can get ABC-HD. Keep in mind the basic tier is all of 15 or so channels and costs all of $15 or so.

Second, the cable companies can't charge extra money for any HD channel that is already on the regular analog lineup (they used to be able to). So they can't charge extra for ESPN-HD but can charge extra for HDNet.

Seems reasonable. If I pay $60 or so for my digital cable why should someone paying $15 get all of that for no extra charge?

Let's focus on getting the bastards to add HD channels, and in unstretched mode.
i agree with most of you. Give me a cheap player and keep your crappy movies. Let me get the ones I want when I want.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"What is the best wireless surround sound speaker solution? I have a home theater where running wires is just not feasible. I have my own speakers, so I don't want a system that has speakers with integrated wireless. I've done a far amount of research and have only come across a few companies that even offer a reasonable solution: KEF, Kenwood and Rocketfish. Is there anything else out there? What do you recommend? Thank you!"
