I think the fall of Gnomeregan makes a good backstory for a gnome rogue. When your home is taken over by bigger, stronger, more numerous bad guys (apparently at least partly as an inside job), fighting back directly is folly.
No, instead, you take to the shadows. You train. You wait. You train some more. And maybe along the way you discover an exceptional talent, and a bigger purpose than reclaiming Gnomeregan.
