For instance, using it to control Boxee was alright -- until we needed to make a call. Or we received a call. Not to rain on anyone's parade, but the idea of re-purposing your phone to act as a universal remote seems a little silly. But what do we know? Maybe you hold all calls while Jersey Shore is on anyways. In that case, Re could be your next favorite gadget. This bad boy lets your handset communicate with all your AV equipment via infrared, contains an extensive database of devices, and can learn from any IR remote. If that weren't enough, New Kinetix promises regular updates to the app -- and your typical remote can't do that! Compatible with the iPod Touch as well, there's no word yet on a price or release date, but we're expecting that we'll be getting plenty more details come CES time.
Re transforms your iPhone into a universal remote (which seems like a step backwards, to be honest) originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 20 Dec 2009 02:25:00 EST. Who knows what names they may bear when hitting the shelves, but we say the more the merrier. if a price war drives down the costs for 3D as quickly as it has for other recent high-definition TV technologies, the timetable for a 3D setup in our living room could be getting even shorter.
AUO joins Panasonic, Sony and others, plans 3D HDTVs for 2010 originally appeared on Engadget HD on Sat, 19 Dec 2009 13:57:00 EST. Time Warner didn't say who it was targeting with the heavily-slanted RollOverorGetTough (Spanish language version available at www.cederoponersefirme.com) website recently, but now that Fox has yelped like a hit dog and launched its own campaign at KeepFoxOn.com we can see where this is going. While Time Warner's latest press release claims victory from over 400,000 visitors overwhelmingly voting in favor of Getting Tough on price gouging programmers, Fox is claiming it seeks only "fair compensation" and is fulfilling its "responsibility" to prepare viewers for losing their channels. The Fox website hypes up switching to satellite and all the programming that could be lost if Time Warner does not opt to continue its agreement to carry Fox networks, and pointing out everything that's at stake: House, 24, several BCS games and more. The only ones we truly have sympathy for are the customers in the middle, hopefully this slapfight ends in time for them to avoid missing even a second of precious TV, just like the great Viacom near-miss of '08 - '09.
Time Warner, Fox trade shots on who to blame when you can't see the bowl games originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 18 Dec 2009 21:11:00 EST.
It should come as absolutely no surprise that big time HD lovers like us prefer to enjoy our movies in the comfort of our own home theater, but even we get out to the movies on occasion and of course it would take a movie just like Avatar to get us off the couch. Part of the reason is because we've bought into the latest 3D technology hook line and sinker, and really want to see if it holds up during a 3 hour epic. And since we figured this is just the type of thing we love to get some social confirmation on. We want to know: are we the only ones planning on throwing down $10 to see Avatar in 3D this weekend?

Of course, that's more than a year away, and Sony is planning to test out its 3D equipment at the upcoming 2010 event first. We'll see if any networks are ready to broadcast this PGA Tour Stop in the best quality available by that time -- or if the British Open is at least in HD.
Sony's 2011 PGA Tour event to be shot in 3D originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 18 Dec 2009 16:17:00 EST. What caused the wait until 2010? Apparently that's how long it took to upgrade the control room for these shows that are continuously in production, but at least we'll get to see how many CNBC thumbnails Stewart can squeeze into a 16x9 frame before the Mayan calendar runs out.
Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert begin HDTV broadcasts January 4 originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 18 Dec 2009 15:56:00 EST.
See this forlorn-looking male model? He's got a lot on his mind. Really, he's just like the rest of us -- a starry-eyed dreamer who's headed to Hollywood in search of fame and fortune. To this end, he's shacked up with four fellow photogenic wannabes in a Hollywood crash pad where they'll be webcast 24-7 for Simon Fuller's new Internet-only talent show, If I Can Dream. In addition to weekly episodes broadcast on Hulu, <strike>voyeurs</strike> viewers will be able to watch the action in the house live, as it goes down. You see, Hulu (who's not had much luck getting a foothold outside of the states) will be streaming the thing to select international markets in an attempt to spread their brand and influence worldwide. Will it work? Who knows? Besides, Jersey Shore is more our speed. Prompted by "a lack of competition and innovation in this market," the regulator will look into ways it can encourage the proliferation of broadband internet access provision as well as stimulating further advances. One potential solution may involve compelling cable and broadband providers to supply "bridge" network interface devices that'll allow users to hook up their set top box to a modem and get groovy online. Whatever the final proposals are, and they'll take more definite shape in February, we're pleased to see the FCC take a proactive approach toward an industry it perceives to be stagnating. When we took a tour of one of the only two Verizon FiOS Super Head Ends (SHE) in the country It didn't surprise us to learn how much different Verizon's FiOS infrastructure is from most mutli-channel video programming distributors (MVPD) out there. After all FiOS was the first national fiber to the home video provider. But what did surprise us was how similar some things are. This isn't shocking to FiOS customers who just like many Comcast and TWC customers use a Motorola set-top, or to the TiVo and Media Center users who use FiOS with a CableCARD. Verizon entered into the MVPD business less than five years ago, which means it was able to choose to improve the design where it made sense, while sticking to what works instead of reinventing the wheel. And although not everyone can show up at a Super Headend and get a tour, everyone can click through and see a few pictures and learn a little bit about how your favorite show gets to your HDTV.
It's been a rough 2009 for tru2way, but an expected bit of positive news has appeared now that it finally has a footing in Canada, courtesy of Samsung and Viedotron. After being dissed by Rogers we weren't sure if it would be seen up north but word is the 1.75-million subscribers strong cable company will not only support Samsung tru2way DVRs, but also sell them at its retail locations. Still no word on when Samsung will follow Panasonic's lead and get any of its plug-and-play HDTVs onto the market, but Cable Digital News indicates four have already been certified by CableLabs.
The next tru2way market is..... in Canada? originally appeared on Engadget HD on Thu, 17 Dec 2009 15:02:00 EST. If you haven't experienced RealD 3D yet and you are reading this site, then you might want to check your geek card. We say that because it wasn't until we watched the National Championship game with a set of RealD's 3D glasses in a theater that we finally got this whole 3D thing, and now RealD is proud to let us know that over 100 Million movie goers have experienced it. The biggest hurdle modern 3D technology has to overcome though is the fact that it is using the same name as the crappy cereal box technology of Super Bowl commercials. We can tell you what 100 Million others already know, this isn't the same thing. So right after you post the first comment about how you won't wear any stupid glasses, search out the nearest theater showing AVATAR in 3D at a RealD theater this weekend, and after watching it, tell us this technology isn't going anywhere.
Continue reading Over 100 Million movie goers experience RealD 3D

Over 100 Million movie goers experience RealD 3D originally appeared on Engadget HD on Thu, 17 Dec 2009 13:59:00 EST. Add one more HD connectivity standard to the many clamoring for attention, as the HDBaseT Alliance has linked up to promote whole-home distribution of uncompressed HD content over simple network cables. Valens Semiconductor, the company behind HDBaseT and proponents of 5Play convergence -- that's video, audio, internet, power and various controls over a single Ethernet cable for the uninitiated -- has drawn LG, Samsung and Sony into the fold as founding members, with details about more global leaders joining due in "the upcoming weeks." The tech already had a demo at CES '09, and we've no doubt there's a few more examples of what to expect from a one cable connected multiroom future waiting for us next month in Las Vegas.
HDBaseT Alliance needs just one LAN cable to bind them originally appeared on Engadget HD on Thu, 17 Dec 2009 12:56:00 EST. In case plans by AMD and a slew of other tech vendors planning to showcase 3D Blu-ray compatible products at CES wasn't a tip-off, the updated specifications are done. The key details? First, that the Blu-ray Disc Association has chosen the Multiview Video Coding (MVC) codec to store 3D, so that even though it is now providing a full 1080p frame for each eye, it will only require about 50% more storage space compared to the 2D version, and all discs will be fully backwards compatible, in 2D, on existing players. Better than backwards compatibility, the PlayStation 3 will be forwards compatible with the new discs -- a new HDTV setup (the spec promises to work with plasmas, LCDs or projectors equally well) with IR emitters and glasses will still be necessary. According to the PR (after the break) we can expect Blu-ray 3D-stickered products in 2010, our only advice is to keep those responsible for the Cowboys Stadium abomination far, far away from it.
Continue reading Blu-ray 3D specifications finalized, your PS3 is ready

Blu-ray 3D specifications finalized, your PS3 is ready originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 17 Dec 2009 05:59:00 EST. From Nielsen numbers to the freshly unveiled Boxee Box and the latest in CableCARD in tru2way news. We discuss the failure of the Cowboys Stadium "3D" experience and why it shouldn't affect your view of upcoming technology, plus what's new in discs: Blu-ray/DVD combos, trade in programs and free VOD offers. Closing this week out is a look at the latest wireless HD contender and the most premium HDMI cable ever made.
In case you hadn't heard, there's a pretty high profile 3D movie coming to theatres near you this weekend, and assuming one actually has multiple multiplexes to choose from, who has the best technology? RealD and Dolby have been fighting it out to ramp up 3D theater installs over the last couple of years with other competitors also mixed in, but our friend Kevin wants to know if there is a noticeable difference from location to location:

A question I have every time a new 3D movie comes out: We have two theaters here that offer 3D movies. One lists them as "Digital 3D"; the other as "RealD 3D". What are the technical differences, and do they end up producing noticeably different final results? Or am I getting the same experience at both theaters? Thanks for your help!

We know a few of you must have grabbed a pair of glasses and checked out flicks form the Toy Story series to Coraline and My Bloody Valentine, do you have preference on where to go to see 3D?

Got a burning question that you'd love to toss out for Engadget HD (or its readers) to take a look at? Wondering what Sony has in store for the summer of 2010? We can't tell you, but we can give you a few clues. A device called the HID-C10 "Home Information Device" has been given the full FCC once-over and, while confidentiality clauses keep the juicy bits secret, we do know that it somehow connects to a TV and that it possesses 802.11b/g wireless. Our first guess is that this is a simple WiFi adapter for Sony's internet-streaming televisions, but with a name like "Home Information Device" it could be something a bit more, possibly letting you do a little home automation on your HDTV between Modern Warfare 2 matches. It's anybody's guess, but we're inclined to believe that fiddling with thermostat settings in your home would be more exciting than hanging out at Home.
Mystery Sony "Home Information Device" unveiled by FCC, purpose kept secret originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 16 Dec 2009 07:51:00 EST. Although it's technically possible to use the gorgeous IPS display in the 27-inch iMac as a standalone monitor, the feature's been pretty limited in practice, since it only works with other DisplayPort devices like the unibody MacBooks. That's about to change thanks to Apogee, which just posted up a video demo of an as-yet-unnamed HDMI-to-DisplayPort adapter being used to play Xbox 360, PS3, and -- yes, it's true -- Blu-ray movies on Apple's latest all-in-one. Never thought you'd see the day, did you? Apogee hasn't disclosed pricing or availability yet, but we're told more info is coming soon --we'd guess sometime around CES. Video after the break.
Continue reading Blu-ray comes to the iMac... via an Apogee HDMI-to-Mini DisplayPort adapter

Blu-ray comes to the iMac... via an Apogee HDMI-to-Mini DisplayPort adapter originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 Dec 2009 15:51:00 EST. In this interesting fate of TiVo piece in Multichannel news this week, littered among all the reasons TiVo may or may not make it through the next couple of years was this little gem about the new DirecTV TiVo HD. Previously promised to be released during 2009 and then delayed until sometime in 2010, Multichannel news now says it is actually anticipated in the spring of 2010. Which means that if it doesn't get delayed again, it will have taken just under two years since the announcement for it to hit the street. Does that sound ridiculous to anyone else?
New DirecTV TiVo HD due in the Spring of 2010 originally appeared on Engadget HD on Tue, 15 Dec 2009 15:46:00 EST. After taking some time in limited beta, Comcast has renamed its TV Everywhere streaming venture Fancast Xfinity TV and made it available nationally to all customers with internet and cable TV subscriptions. A simple browser plugin authorizes up to 3 computers per account, but now that it's live we've found more has changed than just its unfortunate new name. Users won't need to be at home to activate their computers for viewing; all that's needed is a login and with plenty of cross browser compatibility it should work easily no matter your setup anywhere within the U.S. For us, the Comcast Access installer worked flawlessly on one Windows 7 equipped netbook while failing with an error message tech support couldn't decipher on a similar desktop. Once up and running, there's even some high-definition streaming video available (Juno, Max Payne, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary and others) with more on the way. All told there's about 2000 hours of content online including HBO and Starz restricted items, peep the full list on Fancast.com or check out the setup and viewing process in our gallery below. Technical glitches aside, for the price of absolutely nothing over our current cable and internet bill with HD streaming already active, we may have a new way to keep up with our stories while on the go.
The bad news is that if you're a big fan of the extended versions -- as if the originals weren't long enough -- you'll have to keep waiting as this $99 box set won't include 'em. What it will include is three discs of extras as well as digital copies of all three movies. If you aren't into buying movies on shiny discs anymore though, also on the 16th April, the trilogy will also be available at all the new sources like iTunes, Amazon VOD and Xbox/Zune Marketplace.
Lord of the Rings and Blu-ray to meet in April of 2010 originally appeared on Engadget HD on Tue, 15 Dec 2009 14:44:00 EST. Broadcom's busting out some big muscle on the video chip front today, launching both a 1080p smartphone camera chip and a single-chip Blu-ray player chip. The BCM2763 mobile phone chip supports full 1080p video recording and playback, as well as 20 megapixel stills with face / smile detection and image stabilization. There's also support for 3D gaming at 1080p, and HDMI support is included so you can plug into a TV and actually see all those pixels -- and a 20-to-50 percent reduction in power usage means you'll be able to play video over HDMI for "up to 16 hours," although we'd like to see that claim tested in a real handset before we totally buy it. Broadcom's also hyping its new BCM7630 single-chip Blu-ray solution, which offers BD decoding and support for streaming apps like Netflix, Pandora, Vudu and CinemaNow all on a single chip -- and manufacturers can combine it with the new BCM7632 for 3d-Blu-ray support. Single-chip means cheaper Blu-ray decks -- so sure, we'll take it. No word on when any of these chippies are going to end up in production hardware, but we're hoping to hear more about that at CES.
Broadcom announces 1080p camera phone chip, single-chip Blu-ray decoder originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 Dec 2009 13:24:00 EST. Do you love funky proprietary software enough to force your loved ones to run it too? That's the question Cisco seems to be asking with the FlipShare TV, a new set-top box designed to help make sharing Flip videos super-simple for even the most basic user. Unfortunately, some puzzling design choices and big limitations combined with the less-than-wonderful FlipShare software make this seem like more of a hassle than it's worth. What do we mean? Read on for the full review.
Looking for an... alternative after being given a 1080p-streaming brick by Western Digital earlier this month? A.C. Ryan has a new option, the Playon!HD Mini. It's a smaller version of the bigger Playon!HD that seems to lose only its internal drive bay, card reader, and €50, meaning this one retails for €99 -- about $144. Yes, a good bit more than the WD TV, but it hits all the right marks, including 1080p output over HDMI or component, support for streaming media or USB mass storage, and even the ability to tune into Shoutcast and other undisclosed "internet feeds." The company also promises "very active new firmware releases" which, without a little restraint, could be a recipe to repeat WD's disaster.
After taking the cautious approach and throwing out a single 3D TV model in 2009, the Korean manufacturer is now boldly predicting sales of 400,000 3D units in 2010 and 3.4 million in 2011. To make it all happen, the company has announced it will introduce a "wide range" of 3D TV sets measuring between 42 and 72 inches diagonally, with flagship models among them. Furthermore, LG's new partnership with SkyLife will see both companies investing in 3D content creation, as the digital satellite broadcaster will be pitching in $25 million. Naturally, this Korean push is merely a prelude to a planned assault on American and European markets next year, which LG expects will jump all over 3D given its internal survey data indicating 58 percent of people want an extra dimension to their viewing experience. What we're most excited about, though, is the "ultra-slim" bezel you see in the picture -- it is no accident or mere prototype, and its minimization is part of LG's effort to maximize immersion. We like it, 3D or not.
LG expects to sell 3.8 million 3D LCDs by 2011, partners with Korean broadcaster SkyLife originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 Dec 2009 04:19:00 EST. The first is the animated G-Force from Disney. The other two are comedies and while we can't personally vouch for Inglourious Basterds, we can tell you that The Hangover if one of the funniest movies we've seen in a long time.

You know 3D has a long way to go when even Jerry Jones can't manage to sell it for longer than seven minutes: the vaunted real-time 3D scoreboard display experiment at last night's Cowboys game was turned off to loud cheers after just six minutes and fifty seconds of being active. The problem, as usual, was glasses: most of the 80,000 people in attendance didn't bother to put on the headgear required to see the 3D effect, and instead saw a blurry anaglyph image -- which they then booed. What's more, some who wore the glasses complained that the 3D effect caused nausea, although probably not as badly as the Cowboys' 20-17 loss to the Chargers. HDlogix actually has the tech to do glasses-free 3D, but it simply doesn't work when scaled up for the world's largest HD monitor -- a problem they'll have plenty of time to solve when the Cowboys fail to make the playoffs with another couple December losses.
Continue reading Cowboys Stadium 3D scoreboard experiment doesn't go so well, turned off in less than seven minutes

Cowboys Stadium 3D scoreboard experiment doesn't go so well, turned off in less than seven minutes originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 14 Dec 2009 13:01:00 EST. JVC's never been much on using wires to hook up its home theater systems, and for those not looking for mind-blowing 7.1 surround, these soon-available wireless soundbar setups might just satisfy your aural cravings without forcing you to run ungodly lengths of cabling around your den. The TS-BA3 ($549.95) is a dual wireless soundbar system that consists of a 280-watt amplifier, 5.1-channel surround rig (including a soundbar, wireless subwoofer and wireless rear speaker kit) and built-in surround decoding. You'll also find a single analog input, two optical digital inputs and support for Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby ProLogic II surround signals. The TH-BS7 ($599.95) is engineered to mount alongside flat-panel HDTVs, with a 1.4-inch tall, ultrathin soundbar, an even slimmer wall-mountable amplifier / control unit and a wireless subwoofer. This one's packing 180-watts of teeth-rattling oomph and promises 4.1 sound with minimal consumption of floor space. Hop on past the break for the full release and detailed specifications.
Joining the ignominious ranks of LG, Sharp, Hitachi and Chungwa Picture Tube, Taiwanese manufacturer Chi Mei is refunding the US state for the pecuniary impact of its collusive practices, which were primarily related to keeping prices artificially high and profits proportionately inflated. US companies directly affected by these ignoble activities include HP, Dell and Apple, but don't you worry, AT&T has already started the inter-corporation scuffle, with Nokia piling on for good measure. Here at Engadget HD, we'd prefer not to just focus on high-def happenings in the US of A. Thus, we round up the best of the best from the international front each week and present it here, bundled together in a single, easy to digest list. If something went down in your corner of the globe over the past seven days (or few weeks,) let the rest of the world know it in comments. 'Til next week, Totsiens!
Unorthodox media center PCs aren't anything new; if you can dream it up, there's most likely an option out there with your name on it. Piixl's newest entry, however, has a fairly decent shot at appealing to more than just the home theater junkies, but only time will tell if the London-based startup can convince consumers that they really need another slab of machinery behind their flat-panel. The EdgeCenter 3770 is essentially an ultraslim HTPC with an enclosure that's engineered to mount directly behind flat-panel HDTVs through their VESA mounting interface. The whole thing is just 30mm deep and can fit screens ranging from 37- to 70-inches, and if you're worried about it being underpowered, don't be. The base configuration is equipped with a 3Ghz Core 2 Duo chip, while Core i5 and Core i7 options (not to mention discrete GPUs) are available for those with the spare poundage. Interested parties can order theirs now starting at £2,490 ($4,043), though it's frighteningly easy to push that well into five figure territory.
Continue reading Piixl EdgeCenter 3770 media PC slides behind your flat panel, doesn't get the attention it deserves

Piixl EdgeCenter 3770 media PC slides behind your flat panel, doesn't get the attention it deserves originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 12 Dec 2009 19:13:00 EST. Hah. HDI, the California startup with dreams of producing a 100-inch 3D HDTV that's driven by lasers, has just released the first hint of a price range, and as predicted, it ain't cheap. The set -- which has already been deemed a favorite by The Woz -- has reportedly had its first batch manufactured over in China, and we're told that a smattering of 'em should be available by May. If all goes well, the HDTV should be in full-scale production mode by Christmas of next year, and we've learned that the whole thing will measure around 10-inches thick. Amazingly, it'll also go relatively easy on the power meter, but the $10,000 to $15,000 price estimate is bound to shock some. Of course, Panasonic's own 103-inch 3D HDTV is currently pegged at around $75,000, so when you think of it from that perspective, HDI's offering is a bona fide bargain. And totally worth liquidating your future kid's college fund for.
HDI's 100-inch, laser-driven 3D HDTV gets $10k to $15k price tag originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 12 Dec 2009 14:55:00 EST. First Warner, now Disney, we're wondering if any of you are actually interested in any of these DVD trade in programs? Besides the issues of availability & selection there's whether or not you get to keep your old discs, and the simple hassle of participating. Still, clearly the studios think there's a market for these programs to get people jumping into Blu-ray discs and players, so let us know, are you biting?
