Got a knack for all things rugged, rubberized and orange? Then you're undoubtedly familiar with LaCie's robust line of drives, which the firm's been peddling to abusive storage lovers since 2008. Joining the family today are 500GB, 1TB, and (next month) 1.5TB miniaturized versions of Neil Poulton's shock, drop, and rain-resistant baby. They also tote USB 3.0, making them perfect candidates for speedy transfers while you're being hunted by some rare and soon-to-be extinct Amazonian jungle cat. Sound like your kind of shindig? PR and a video await you after the break.
Continue reading LaCie's Rugged Mini is rugged, also mini (video)

LaCie's Rugged Mini is rugged, also mini (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 19 Jul 2011 16:10:00 EST.
Yes, you've heard it right, kids! Buffalo's wild'n'wooly USB 3.0 external hard drive (the HD-HXU3) is now shipping. Available in 1TB($200), 1.5TB ($250), and 2TB ($400) designations, the package includes Memeo AutoBackup and a one year warranty. It's also backwards compatible to USB 2.0, but never mind that -- the company is concurrently releasing its dual-port USB 3.0 PCI Express Interface Card (IFC-PCIE2U3). Welcome to the future, indeed. It's no coincidence that Samsung named its external USB hard disk "Story" as it attempts to woo consumers away from Western Digital's My Book series of backup devices. The brushed aluminum slab with "passionate red lines" (groan) plays host to your choice of 500GB, 1TB, or 1.5TB 3.5-inch disks. The Story Station can backup your data in "real-time" or be setup to backup on a set schedule of your choosing. Data is secured via password with an optional SecretZone virtual drive setup for encrypting all your swine-flu conspiracy data. This device is single-port, USB 2.0 only so you'll have to take your dreams of network attached storage, eSATA, or FireWire 800 elsewhere. Available in Europe first sometime in May for an undisclosed price.

Samsung's 1.5TB STORY hard drive is just the same 'ol originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Apr 2009 02:06:00 EST. We understand, you're not ready to let go of the BSG season finale just yet even though Tiger and Phil are charging up the back nine at Augusta, but keeping a lot of HD on the DVR can fill up space quickly -- which is where these two come in. Amazon is now taking pre-orders of the long-awaited 1TB edition of Western Digital's TiVo compatible (or other eSATA enabled box) DVR Expander, although no ship date is listed, and Apricorn took our advice on its fugly 500GB, 1TB or 1.5TB sized boxes, giving them a sleek new look. It's dual USB 2.0 / eSATA compatible, but not TiVo, so Scientific Atlanta 8300, DirecTV and DISH ViP owners can claim this one at $219 for the 1.5TB, while the WD will set you back $183.

Read - Apricorn Unveils New Look for the DVR Expander
Read - Western Digital WDG1S10000N My DVR Expander 1TB eSATA (Black)

Western Digital 1TB DVR Expander pre-orders up at Amazon, Apricorn add-ons get a face lift originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 12 Apr 2009 22:49:00 EST. While it's still not <strike>nearly</strike> as capacious as Western Digital's latest green hard drive, Samsung's 1.5TB EcoGreen F2EG is still plenty roomy for most. Of course, we're still trying to decide if both "Eco" and "Green" were really necessary in the model name, but we digress. The drive sports 500GB per platter, and reportedly, it sucks down less power (around 40 percent less, in fact) than most HDDs thanks to the awesomely named EcoTriangle technology. Check it right this second for a buck forty-nine.

[Via Physorg]

Samsung spills 1.5TB EcoGreen F2EG hard drive originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Mar 2009 00:46:00 EST. You know, we're not actually certain we want to trust 1.5TB of our <strike>precious precious NES ROMS</strike> invaluable work data to a single drive, but that doesn't mean Seagate's latest Barracuda isn't droolworthy regardless. The jump from 1TB to 1.5TB is the "largest capacity hard drive jump in the more than half-century history of hard drives," according to Seagate, and the perpendicular-recording drives should begin shipping in August. There are also a pair of Momentus 2.5-inch 500GB notebook drives coming in Q4 in 5400 and 7200RPM speeds, but like big brother, pricing is unavailable -- we've got a hunch you might want to start saving those pennies, though.

[Thanks, Dave]

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11: 1.5TB of love originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 10 Jul 2008 17:10:00 EST. Western Digital just upped their My Book family of storage solutions to 1.5TB. The update apparently applies to the magnificently confusing range of products including the World Edition, World Edition II, Pro Edition, Pro Edition II, Premium Edition II, Premium ES Edition, Premium Edition, and Essential Edition... which isn't all that essential considering the alternatives. However, the obtusely worded press release and lagging web site and on-line store has us scratching our collective heads. So let's just say that the My Book World Edition NAS products have been updated and call it a day.

Western Digital's My Book family updated to 1.5TB originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 11 Jun 2007 11:01:00 EST.
