The NBA Finals kicks off tomorrow, and while the games will air in high definition on ABC, they will also air for the first time in 3D on ESPN 3D. If you prefer your sporting events sans-glasses there's plenty to look forward to: 32 HD cameras, six Super Slo-Mo cameras, a SkyCam and additional tweaks like ESPN Axis graphics. We'd still prefer to swap Mike Breen for Marv Albert and whatever intro music they have planned for John Tesh's Roundball Rock, but that's just us. The 3D broadcast will be held down by Mark Jones and either Bruce Bowen or Tim Legler calling the action. Of course, the fantastic playoffs we've experienced will come to an end eventually, but to fill in the summer sports slate until the X Games, ESPN 3D has also plans to air five Friday Night Fights matches over the summer. Check the press releases after the break for the dates and details, we'll be hunting down our 3D specs.
Continue reading ESPN 3D preps for NBA Finals, adds new Friday Night Fights to the schedule

ESPN 3D preps for NBA Finals, adds new Friday Night Fights to the schedule originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 30 May 2011 17:26:00 EST. We're just a few hours away from the first NBA game on ESPN 3D when the Heat face the Knicks at 7 p.m. at Madison Square Garden, and now ESPN has announced it will have the "television premiere" of the 3D trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides during the broadcast. While we wonder if that will become a trend for the network to show off 3D trailers for the slew of movies coming to theaters in the future, those who haven't bought a 3D capable TV but do want to see how the broadcast looks may want to check out one of the retailers (Best Buy, among others) participating in the CEA's Demo Days, coming back this weekend just in time for the game. Of course, that may mean choosing between Lebron vs. Amare and The Engadget Show tonight, but we're sure you'll make the right decision.
Retailer's 3D Demo Days, new Pirates movie trailer highlight ESPN 3D's first NBA game originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 17 Dec 2010 16:19:00 EST. ESPN 3D will broadcast its first NBA game this Friday night with Heat/Knicks, but it's already adding three new dates to the previously announced 14 game schedule. One is a Bulls/Knicks matchup on Christmas day, while the suns get two Friday night games in January against New York and Portland. Jon Barry and Mark Jones will have the call on the 17th, with Jones scheduled to do play-by-play for ESPN3D all season, so if you're unwrapping a new set and glasses, just make sure you've got everything plugged in by noon so you can catch the game.
ESPN 3D schedules three more NBA games, including one on Christmas Day originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 13 Dec 2010 16:36:00 EST. While ESPN 3D's NCAA football plans are still leaking out in dribs and drabs (Ohio State is featured in the next two broadcasts, hosting Indiana on September 9 and at Wisconsin on the 16th) it has finally released its plans for the NBA season. Basketball fans can look forward to 14 planned broadcasts this season, with eight regular season matchups and six games in the playoffs, including three in the Western Conference Finals. LeBron, Dwyane, Chris and the rest of the Heat kick things off with a visit to Madison Square Garden against the Knicks December 17, with plenty of highlight matches among those that follow. Check the full schedule after the break, with so few on the slate you'll want to make sure you're free.
Continue reading ESPN 3D will broadcast 14 NBA games this year starting with Heat/Knicks December 17

ESPN 3D will broadcast 14 NBA games this year starting with Heat/Knicks December 17 originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 06 Oct 2010 13:43:00 EST. Not all the preparation for ESPN's 3D network is going on at the Innovation Lab, VP of Communications Mike Soltys recently spoke with Sports Media Watch during ESPN the Weekend at Disney and mentioned other tests under way to make sure things get off on the right foot. A recent Globetrotters game in Orlando that aired on ESPN2 served as a test bed for 3D, with production done out of the same truck as the regular broadcast and 3D cameras mounted along with their standard broadcast counterparts. NBA games will be among the "minimum" 85 3D events ESPN airs on the network over the first year and we're pretty sure they were more interested in finding out how to best capture Dwight Howard than Flight Time Lang. As we learned from Sky's recent demo, camera angle is a major part of the 3D soccer experience and to get that right there's a soccer field next to the aforementioned Innovation Lab to work out those details before this summer's World Cup debut. Check the full interview for a few more details plus notes on whether it plans on reacquiring rights to air NHL games and other major and minor recent controversies -- we'll stick to the 3D.
ESPN used Harlem Globetrotters game to test 3D basketball production originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 04 Mar 2010 13:44:00 EST. Mark Cuban may be up and down on the future of internet video, but he's evidently quite confident in the future of 3D cinema -- or 3D sporting events in cinemas, at least. The internet / media / basketball tycoon has put his money where his mouth is by acquiring a 9.4% stake in Carmike Cinemas. Only Cuban himself fully understands the nearly $3 million investment, but he was quoted as saying that he is "trying to expand" the live 3D broadcast-to-a-theater business. Looking back over the course of 2008, we're astounded at the amount of traction that 3D has gained, and while many may assume that live 3D sporting events in cinemas is nothing more than a gimmick, we guess we can't possibly be surprised if it ends up taking off.

Cuban invests in Carmike Cinemas, clearly expects 3D sporting events to thrive originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 31 Dec 2008 06:40:00 EST. It won't be the first 3D NBA experience of all time, but it will be the first of this magnitude. Cinedigm is teaming up with the league and Turner Sports to showcase the 2009 All-Star Saturday Night in Live 3D HD to some 80 theaters across the US. Hailed as the "first-ever marketed and commercially viable (open for sale to public) live movie theater broadcast of a major sporting event," the spectacle will be available on over 160 screens in 35 states. As of now, pricing information remains fuzzy, but you'll have to either roll solo or hope your lady friend(s) really loves Kobe given the terrible, terrible February 14th show date. Way to think that one through, NBA. Full release is after the break.
Continue reading Cinedigm to bring NBA All-Star Saturday Night live in 3D to theaters nationwide

Cinedigm to bring NBA All-Star Saturday Night live in 3D to theaters nationwide originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 10 Dec 2008 08:00:00 EST. Under normal circumstances, we tend to give 3D a hard time around here, but it's hard to deny the strides the technology has made of late in an attempt to move beyond being a gimmick and into a desirable product. It seems that hundreds of NBA fans that packed the Magnolia Theater just days ago were quite impressed with the first regular season matchup to be aired in 3D. Those in attendance were able to catch a commercial-free 3D broadcast of the Dallas Mavericks versus the LA Clippers courtesy of two Sony 4K projectors and a set of gaudy glasses. Unfortunately, we're not sure if the one-time event will blossom into something more, but feel free to tap the read link for more opinions and a couple more snapshots.

[Via AboutProjectors]

Fans react to 3D Mavericks / Clippers matchup originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 27 Mar 2008 11:02:00 EST. For the first time during the regular season (after last year's All-Star Game and a Finals game) -- and unsurprisingly with a connection to Engadget HD friend Mark Cuban (where's our invite man?) -- the March 25 game between the Dallas Mavericks and L.A. Clippers can be viewed live at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, or across town in the Magnolia Theatre with Sony's SXRD 3D projection system beamed onto an 18x42 foot screen for VIPs and 100 lucky fans who can win entry on mavs.com. Now if they could just find a way to simulate buying tickets for way over face value from eBay or StubHub in the theatre, it would be just like going to a real game.

FSN Southwest preps first NBA regular season 3D broadcast originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 19 Mar 2008 18:37:00 EST. But even when your team is away, people often still gather and watch the game at the arena (if not on their big screen); and this year the Cleveland Cavaliers arena-goers are going to have a better viewing experience than most. Rather than watching the away games on the side of a building, though, they'll be catching the action in glorious three-dimensional HD -- with a little help from 3D motion imaging specialist PACE. The game will be captured with PACE's Sports Fusion 3D HD camera systems. Then using TI DLP projectors, it will be displayed on four 46-feet 3D screens. So, even if you aren't a basketball fan, if you're anywhere near the Quicken Loans Arena on Sunday at 9pm, you might want to check it out -- assuming you can even get in.

Guests in Las Vegas, will go to the Mandalay Bay hotel instead of the Thomas and Mack Center where the game is being played, and don special glasses to view view a 3D high definition version of TNT's broadcast of Saturday and Sunday night's activities. Five 3D camera systems have been installed around the arena by Pace, and according to the NBA's VP of operations and technology, the HDTV widescreen broadcast will allow them to avoid many cuts and camera movements, hopefully minimizing any shaky cam effect some complained about during the special SkyCam broadcast last year. If you can't make it to Vegas to check things out, you can still see this technology at work this season, as a similar broadcast during the NBA Finals is already planned. No word on plans for a "belligerent drunk" simulator, so either way we still have a long way to go towards simulating the real game experience in a theater and someday in the future, at home.

Read - Variety
Read - Broadcasting & Cable

NBA's 2007 All-Star Game in HDTV... and 3D originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 12 Feb 2007 10:30:00 EST.
