Add this to Apple's string of revelations at this year's WWDC: the company has just divulged its 2013 Design Awards winners, comprising of a variety of iPhone, iPad and Mac apps that it deems to be a cut above the rest. This year's list includes note-taking app Evernote, Yahoo Weather and two stellar entries by student developers. This is also the first time Apple has required young developer scholarship applicants to submit apps that detail their lives and backgrounds in technology, out of which the company chose three standout submissions. Just like last year, Apple judged the entries based on their features and visual designs. You can check out the full list in the source below and -- if you're a dev -- glean some hints for next year.

Two weeks after Evernote added Reminders to its Mac, iOS and web applications, the highly anticipated feature has arrived for Android as well. As with the other platforms, you can now set up an alarm just by tapping the clock icon in a note. You'll be able to configure due dates, times and whether you want to be alerted via an in-app notification or email. The Reminders are then attached to each notebook, allowing you to organize them in a to-do list if you so choose. You can permit friends or colleagues to subscribe to them too, which could be useful if you want note collaborators to keep track of project deadlines.

Aside from helping you memorize things, Evernote also added a few other improvements to the Android app. They include improved copy and paste in note view, corrected photo order in the multi-shot camera, more functional shortcuts and better Japanese language support. There's no need to remind yourself to download this update -- just head on over to the Google Play link and get it right now.

Update: We've learned that Evernote on Windows Phone has been updated to include the Reminders feature too -- we've added a link to the Windows Phone Store app below.

Three months after a major database hack, Evernote has finally made good on its promise to implement two-factor authentication as an additional precautionary measure. Following the footsteps of other security-conscious companies, the technique requires not just your username and password, but also a six-digit code provided either via text message or an app like Google Authenticator. Further, you can print out a list of backup codes in case you don't have your phone handy. Premium and Business users will be the first to get this functionality -- they'll be treated as a test group for feedback. Once the system is optimized for a wider audience, it'll be offered to all users.

Other apps in the Evernote clan, including Skitch, Penultimate and Evernote Food will need to be updated and certain third-party apps might need to be given their own dedicated passwords as well. Aside from the double-step verification, Evernote has also introduced the ability to view your account's access history and a list of authorized applications; you can revoke any device from your account settings if necessary. All of these added layers of security are totally optional, of course, but you might want to set yourself a reminder to check them out.

It wasn't too long ago that we saw the Evernote app get a pretty major refresh on Windows Phone, but today the note-taking service is back with some underlying improvements and a couple of new features. The main highlight in version 3.1 is that the WP application now allows various tools to be pinned to your handset's Live Tiles -- you know, things like notes, recordings and snapshots. To close things out, Evernote added the option for users to be able to display Snippet View notes in a horizontal list, a minor tweak that's bound to be appreciated by those who have a thing for landscape mode. All in all, we'd say this isn't too bad for being in the category of a "dot-one" update.

Sure, Evernote is great for jotting down recipes and syncing notes to the cloud, but users lacking in the memory department still had to rely on external alarm apps to remind them of their to-do lists. That all ends today with the introduction of Evernote's Reminders feature for Mac, iOS and web applications. Simply tap the alarm clock icon on each note and set the desired date and time you want to be reminded of it. You'll then get an in-app alarm or an email reminder sent to you if you've set it up that way. That particular notebook will also now have a Reminders section on top to help you keep track of your various projects. Sadly, there's no word on an Android implementation just yet -- perhaps we should ask Evernote to set a Reminder for that.

It's not all WhatsApp and LINE. If you're in Korea, then your messaging app of choice is most likely to be Kakao Talk, and Evernote hopes that allying with the app will expand its remit and boost its presence in Asia. The team-up looks set to bring Evernote's services within the chat window of your Kakao Talk conversations, allowing users to share images, links and entire messages to their private note locker.

According to Evernote CEO Phil Libin, the company's products have typically been "quite introverted; keeping your own memories and information for your own use." He added that Evernote is always looking for ways to improve sharing and collaboration with the app: "There is a lot we can learn about sharing and communication by working with Kakao." The messaging app's CEO Lee Sir-goo added that the partnership would "elevate the status of Kakao Talk as a global mobile platform," with the Evernote-optimized iteration arriving in the next two to three months. Now, to figure out exactly how many messaging apps is too many messaging apps.

It may seem difficult to believe, but iOS and Android users do share something in common: they both like to eat. But while Evernote Food for iOS has seen a couple of updates in recent months, its Android counterpart has been somewhat neglected. That ends today, though, with a huge 2.0 refresh that finally gives Evernote Food for Android parity with the iOS version, including a new navigation drawer with four main sections.

Breaking those down: Explore is a compiled list of Evernote-suggested recipes, My Cookbook stores clipped recipes from the main Evernote app and around the web, Restaurants lets you discover and bookmark places to eat (you can even make OpenTable reservations) and My Meals is essentially a food journal. As for platform discrepancies, the Android app has a Recently Viewed pane which the iOS version lacks, but the latter offers recipe-sharing while the Android one doesn't. So go ahead, foodie Android fans: download the app and get to sharing your favorite food memories. Remember, you don't have to say how you got that pizza delivered.

Gallery: Evernote Food 2.0 for Android

The division's vice president John McGeachie sat down with us for a bit at The Next Web Conference this week in Amsterdam, giving us an inside look at how the company has evolved, what it has learned and where it hopes to go. Specifically for Evernote Business, McGeachie affirmed that there's a greater need for educating users as compared to individuals just testing the waters on its free service. "It sort of takes a while for people to figure out how to best fit Evernote into their workflow," he said, "but once that starts happening, people see that it adds an amazing amount of value to all of these different areas." He added: "That's basically how our whole marketing strategy works. We're really just listening to how people use Evernote, and then put that back out there [as use case scenarios]."

In that sense, Evernote's quite unusual. Many startups have to maintain a focused product just to convince a new audience to try something foreign. Evernote, on the other hand, is deliberately open-ended, and it's the company itself that's now learning how to evolve based on direct feedback. "Our best source of new users that stay and really use the product is from understanding how someone they know or someone they can identify with uses it," said McGeachie. He did, however, acknowledge that the huge amount of flexibility does mean that the learning curve is steeper. "We see a lot of people download the app and use it once, and they aren't sure what to do next, so they go away. But a lot of them come back and reengage because they read something or run into someone they know who uses it, and it clicks."

The new features are primarily geared toward adding feedback and notes to PDFs, and Evernote Premium members get two of the best ones: PDF Annotation and Skitch Summary. As the name suggests, the former lets you mark up PDFs with text, arrows, shapes and highlighter tools, while the latter collates all the added notes into a single "summary" so users can get a visual overview of what's changed.

Gallery: Skitch 2.5 for Mac

Other non-premium updates include a new Stamps tool that'll let you mark a document with symbols to indicate approval, disapproval, a question mark, an exclamation point and (of course) a heart. You can also add notes to those symbols to flesh your opinion out a little more. What about filling out those pesky PDF forms? Skitch is bundling a plain text notation mode just for that, too. Last but not least, there's a handy Tool Tip to guide users through all the new features. Those on the Apple side of things can download the new Skitch straightaway, but as there's no word on when Windows and Android users will get the update, they'll have to content themselves with staring at the screenshots above and below for now.

Gallery: Skitch 2.5 for iOS

CEO Phil Libin told IDG that his company won't create hardware internally at first, but with partners. "We won't actually do the manufacturing, but we'll do the co-design together," he said. That isn't to say Evernote is staying out of the internally produced hardware business forever; Libin estimates his company will get there "in a few years -- three, four, five."

Evernote partnered with Moleskin earlier this year to create the "Smart Notebook," so the California-based company's certainly no stranger to working with collaborators. And that's to say nothing of Evernote's functionality on virtually every smart mobile device available (including Google's Glass project). It's not clear what Evernote's hardware ambitions could be, but we'll be sure to keep asking as the next few years roll along.

Now, users that launch the note-taking app will be greeted by two UI refreshes: a simplified homescreen that gathers all your necessary tools for quick access at a glance and a more compact tag list that's easier to navigate and displays more results. The Evernote team's also added the ability to create checkboxes, group notebooks by "stacks" and pin live-tile shortcuts by long-pressing on tags, notes or notebooks; shortcuts that can be synced across various platforms (i.e., Mac, Windows Phone and Android). And for die-hard organizational freaks that pay for the premium product, the app now features document search -- useful for parsing attached MSWord, OpenOffice or iWork docs. The update's live right now, so it should hit your WP device soon. Or if you're one of the uninitiated, now's a good time to make the jump and connect your life with the cloud.

Springpad may lack Evernote's commercial clout, but it makes up for it in a number of ways -- not least with free-of-charge features like offline access from its mobile apps (which certain rivals charge for) and Pinterest-style sharing options. The interface hasn't been a particular strong point, but that could be about to change as version 4.0 has just gone live for at least some users of the web interface. The new UI centers everything on three key buttons along the top:

Springs -- which gives you immediate access to your latest notes, regardless of which device you made them on

Notebooks -- for organizing your notes into projects

Search & Do -- which, needless to say, lets you search your notes, but also suggests activities based to-do tasks you've created.

The same, simplified philosophy is due to hit Springpad's iOS and Android apps soon, although there's no sign of that happening just yet. In meantime, check out the web interface for yourself at the source link.

Update: The iOS and Android apps were just up'd to version 4.0, with same approach to creating and viewing recent Springs without worrying about which notebooks they're assigned to. With both apps, we'd say this is a definite improvement.

The update, which just hit the Play store, includes a mild face lift that offers more contrast between notes and other UI elements, as well as a few new icons with a bit more depth and detail. The visual tweaks aren't particularly exciting, though. What has us rushing for the update button are all the new features, like the completely revamped camera interface. You can now take several images and add them all to a note in one shot. While a dedicated "page" camera helps you get the best results when snapping photos of hand-written missives by boosting contrast and removing shadows. Of course, the company thinks that feature works particularly well when paired with its branded Moleskin notebooks, but those are purely optional. The results from the couple of quick snapshots we took were bright clear and as legible as could be expected. Unfortunately there are continued issues with Evernote's text recognition, which tends to be slow for non-premium users.

Gallery: Evernote 5 for Android

Don't get down if you've already forked out, though, as current premium subscribers can just tag that extra year onto the end of their cycle. Well, combining the best of both worlds, today Evernote released a refreshed version of its Evernote Food application on iOS, making it more accessible for hungry users to book a reservation through OpenTable's system and adding some social tidbits that'll let foodies share their recipes by way of email, Facebook or Twitter. Syncing features were also added in v2.1, which will allow any recipe saved on Evernote to seamlessly show up in the My Cookbook portion of the app. While you go and try out the slightly revamped Evernote Food, we're going to keep perfecting our fish tacos recipe -- and maybe we'll even share once we deem it good enough for a Bobby Flay throwdown. Just maybe.

Nathan Kontny's new Draft web app might be far more helpful for those creators who work step by step. It lets writers declare given document versions as mid-progress drafts, and offers editing side-by-side with older versions to see just what's new in the current session. The app also avoids some of the lock-in that comes with cloud services by allowing imports and syncing with Box, Dropbox, Evernote and Google Drive. There's no easy way to directly publish online as this stage, but if you're only concerned with producing a masterwork in the cloud from start to draft to finish, Kontny's web tool is waiting at the source link.

Evernote's quick to point out that while this release might not be the biggest it's ever pushed out, it truly believes today's revamped Menu Bar Helper to be "one of these little things that we think you'll really enjoy." With the newly added Quick Note functionality, Evernote for Mac will make it extremely simple for users to create notes at any time, simply by clicking the renowned elephant that's living in the menu bar or by triggering a keyboard command (Control-Command-N, to be more specific). Better yet, Quick Note can handle more than just typed words, with items such as images and audio attachments also being able to be added and saved. Evernote says the App Store update should be coming as soon as it gets the stamp of approval from Apple, though folks eager to try it now can grab it straight from the source link below.

As it turns out, Page and Co. have been working with the New York Times to build an application. Just ask for some news and Glass will deliver a headline, a byline, an accompanying image and the number of hours since the article in question was posted. What's more is that users can tap and have the eyewear read the story's text aloud. The duo are also testing a breaking news feature where notifications regarding fresh stories will appear as they're published. Gmail also got some time in the limelight with its very own app. An email sender's image and subject line will appear on the device's screen, and users can reply by dictating their messages.

Evernote and Skitch received some love from the folks in Mountain View too, with the ability to send images to the services through Glass' share functionality. Social networking app Path has found its way onto the wearable computing bandwagon as well. Not only do Google's spectacles receive curated updates from the network -- to keep you from being bombarded, of course-- but they allow users to add emoticons to a friend's post and reply with comments. Not impressed? "This is just where we started with a few friends to test the API in its early stage," says Google Glass developer evangelist Timothy Jordan.

Gallery: Apps for Google Glass

These anxiety-producing consumer annoyances occur over a backdrop of increased cyber-attack news. Chinese hackers are spotlighted in many recent disruptions, substantiated by Akamai's report of originating-attack countries for Q3 2012, which shows China's percentage of worldwide cyber exploits doubling from the previous quarter.

Precautionary password resets, as in the Evernote case, are minor aggravations. But the larger danger of password insecurity and increased cyber-malice is the swift domino effect that can lead to identity theft of the Mat Honan variety. Absolute personal cyber-security is probably a mirage. But there is not enough public education from industry that might reduce millions of easy targets.

In a move that's often more reactive than proactive these days, Evernote has shared plans to add two-factor authentication to its login process. This latest announcement follows last week's hacking attack and subsequent site-wide password reset, and will be available to all of the site's 50 million users beginning later this year, according to an InformationWeek report. It's too early to say exactly how the Evernote team plans to implement the new security feature, whether through a dedicated app or text message password, but given the service's scale, we can likely count out a hardware fob option, at least. For now, your best course of action is to create a secure password, or, if you're especially paranoid, you may consider delaying your return until the security boost is in place.

The operations and security team is keen to point out that there is no evidence that any stored notes and content was accessed, but that some user information -- including passwords and emails -- were. The data breached does benefit from one-way encryption (hashed and salted), but the firm is issuing a site-wide password reset just in case. In short, all users of the site will be required to set a new password, and are advised to log-in as soon as possible to do so. For more details and updates, we suggest keeping a close eye on Evernote's official blog and twitter. Both of which can be found below.
