Everyone likes to try and predict the future and with the Custom Electronic Design &amp; Installation (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/CEDIA/">CEDIA</a>) show only a month away, the crew at Engadget HD threw all of their crazy ideas out there for your reading pleasure. For the most part all of the predictions are around Windows Media Center and how it will integrate with other products like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ZuneHD/">Zune HD</a>, Digital Cable and HD satellite services, but there are some other fun things throw in. We really believe that this is going to be the year that Redmond brings everything together, so if you're the type who doesn't think it'll ever happen, then <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/08/10/cedia-2009-windows-media-center-predictions/">click through</a> to find out why we think you're wrong. Either way, you can expect we'll be on the scene in Atlanta to check out what's new first hand.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdtv/" rel="tag">HDTV</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/mediapcs/" rel="tag">Media PCs</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/10/windows-media-center-is-set-to-thrill-at-cedia-2009-next-month/">Windows Media Center is set to thrill at CEDIA 2009 next month</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 10 Aug 2009 11:17:00 EST. With the Custom Electronic Design &amp; Installation show in Atlanta only a month away, we thought it'd be fun to try and predict the future by laying out our expectations for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/WindowsMediaCenter/">Windows Media Center</a>. The way we see it, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/CEDIA/">CEDIA</a> is the perfect launching pad for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Windows7/">Windows 7</a> Media Center. For starters it is just over a month before the official release of the OS, but more so because Microsoft has used the venue in the past to announce new Media Center features. We really believe that this is going to be the year that Redmond brings everything together, so if you're the type who doesn't think it'll ever happen, then click through to find out why we think you're wrong.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/10/cedia-2009-windows-media-center-predictions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CEDIA 2009 Windows Media Center predictions</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/features/" rel="tag">Features</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-pcs/" rel="tag">Media PCs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cable/" rel="tag">Cable</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/fiber/" rel="tag">Fiber</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/internet/" rel="tag">Internet</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/ota/" rel="tag">OTA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/satellite/" rel="tag">Satellite</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/10/cedia-2009-windows-media-center-predictions/">CEDIA 2009 Windows Media Center predictions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 10 Aug 2009 11:00:00 EST. Extenders for Media Center held so much promise only a year ago, but now with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/19/the-media-center-extender-shootout/">one of our favorite Extenders</a> being discontinued it makes us pause and wonder about the future of the model. A small, low powered STB connected to the TV doing all the heavy lifting for our HTPC makes perfect sense as a concept, but in reality when you consider the price vs the feature set, it just doesn't add up. The economic reality is that an Xbox 360 does more for about the same amount of money, so the small footprint and low power usage just wasn't enough to sway consumers to the Linksys extenders. Looking forward we don't know what to expect, with a premier Media Center partner like Niveus publicly stating that it's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/01/niveus-goes-consumer-level-with-tantalizing-zone-htpc/">new Zone product</a> was created because customers didn't accept the limitations of an extender, it really makes us wonder. We still think the extender model has its place, but it seems now that it only makes sense as a feature of another product instead of standing on its own. So in other words, we still have our hopes up for a Blu-ray player with a built in Extender for Media Center, but in the meantime we'll be picking up a couple more DMA2100s before its too late. <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.geektonic.com/2009/05/linksys-discontinuing-media-extenders.html">GeekTonic</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/dvrs/" rel="tag">DVRs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-pcs/" rel="tag">Media PCs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-streamers/" rel="tag">Media streamers</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/16/linksys-discontinues-its-extenders-for-media-center/">Linksys discontinues its Extenders for Media Center</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 16 May 2009 21:23:00 EST. Here at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/CEDIA/">CEDIA</a>, we were able to sit down with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Microsoft/">Microsoft</a> and chat a bit about the newly unveiled <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/06/microsoft-debuts-extenders-for-windows-media-center-adds-divx-a">Extenders for Windows Media Center</a>. Initially, users will have a number of options, including a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/07/hands-on-with-niveus-media-center-extender/">Niveus Media Extender</a>, and boxes by Linksys and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DLink/">D-Link</a> box. Reportedly, the devices will tout HDMI, component and composite outputs, an Ethernet port, and stereo / optical audio outs. Also, the boxes will support Full HD over 802.11n dual-band, but even the reps admitted that a wired connection was your best bet if you're looking to transmit HD. All of the aforementioned devices (save for Niveus' creation, which is already out of the bag) will be officially loosed at Digital Life later this month, and while we couldn't pry any hard pricing details out of 'em, it sounds like you'll need at least "a few hundred dollars" to pick up a low-ender.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/networking/" rel="tag">Networking</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/07/a-few-more-details-on-d-link-linksys-media-center-extenders/">A few more details on D-Link / Linksys' Media Center Extenders</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 07 Sep 2007 21:41:00 EST. Ok, we're gonna break this down, Microsoft really didn't do us any favors of simplicity this time. As you may remember, back in late 2004 Microsoft's hardware partners announced <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2004/10/25/windows-media-center-extenders-reviewed/">Windows Media Center Extenders</a>, which were basically STBs that could replicate a cheesy version of Media Center's interface on your TV over your home network. Not surprisingly, people didn't want another box (let alone a box with a crappy UI that wasn't as good as a real Media Center) so those boxes never took off. But the best (and most frequently used) implementation came way later on with the Xbox 360, which was able to far better replicate the XP and Vista Media Center experience.<br /><br />So today Microsoft is announcing a reinvigorated Media Center Extender effort called... wait for it... Extenders for Windows Media Center. Ok, the name totally sucks, but the important part is Microsoft upgraded its wayward Extender system with a new version that takes full advantage of Vista (including live HDTV streaming), supports 802.11n, and adds something that really blew our mind: codecs we actually care about, namely XviD and DivX. Niveus, Linksys, and D-Link will all be launching new devices based on this software platform, so watch out for those -- as well as DVD players, TVs, and all manner of other home theater devices Microsoft is apparently trying to get this new system built right into. Unfortunately this new Extender rev isn't being announced for the Xbox 360 (yet), so we'll all have to wait a while longer before playing XviD and DivX movies on that thing -- without transcoding, anyway.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/microsoft-debuts-extenders-for-windows-media-center-adds-divx-and-xvid/">Microsoft debuts Extenders for Windows Media Center, adds DivX and XviD</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/microsoft-debuts-extenders-for-windows-media-center-adds-divx-and-xvid/#384016"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/09/msft-media-center-cedia-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/microsoft-debuts-extenders-for-windows-media-center-adds-divx-and-xvid/#384019"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/09/msft-media-center-cedia-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/microsoft-debuts-extenders-for-windows-media-center-adds-divx-and-xvid/#384017"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/09/msft-media-center-cedia-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/microsoft-debuts-extenders-for-windows-media-center-adds-divx-and-xvid/#384018"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/09/msft-media-center-cedia-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/networking/" rel="tag">Networking</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/06/microsoft-debuts-extenders-for-windows-media-center-adds-divx-a/">Microsoft debuts Extenders for Windows Media Center, adds DivX and XviD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 06 Sep 2007 00:01:00 EST.
