Really. To that end, it's putting $135 million where its mouth is as part of the design and production for the electrified vehicles rolling out to dealer lots this year, such as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/17/ford-focus-electric-test-drive-and-myford-mobile-hands-on-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Focus Electric</a>. A new research building in Dearborn is also being renamed as the Advanced Electrification Center to emphasize the uniform dedication to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/EV/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">EVs</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/hybrid/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">hybrids</a> among the 1,000 researchers that call the Center their home away from home. We already know that the company plans to triple its manufacturing capacity to make 100,000 of the cars a year by 2013, but many of the supporting aspects are getting their own lift, Ford adds: it's hiring more engineers and doubling its battery testing capacity. The checklist of improvements you'll find after the break reflects some braggadocio on Ford's part, especially while it tries to stretch its jobs claims, but it's good news all the same. If the expansion keeps the likes of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/chevrolet,volt?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">GM</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/22/tesla-model-s-first-drive-the-sports-sedan-goes-electric/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Tesla</a> on their toes, drivers hopefully win as a whole.</p>

The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/27/the-engadget-interview-fords-alan-mulally-talks-the-future-of/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">future of transportation</a> is here, folks. We've <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/12/ford-takes-us-on-the-worlds-shortest-test-drive-in-the-focus-el/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">spent some time</a> with the Ford Focus Electric and have seen <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/11/ford-focus-electric-motor-extracted-split-asunder-coppery-guts/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">all the bits</a> that make it go, but we didn't know who'd be the first to receive one. Turns out Google got an early Christmas present, and received its Focus Electric, the first production unit, just before the holidays. That means that the gang at Big G is already enjoying the 84mph top speed and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/31/ford-focus-electric-unlikely-to-support-dc-quick-charging-slowe/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">fast charging secret sauce</a> that lets the Ford fully charge on a 240-volt outlet in just over three hours -- or roughly half the time it takes a Leaf to top off its batteries. Wonder whether the EV from Dearborn is destined to join Google's Street View fleet, its cadre of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/03/googles-self-driving-cars-take-ted-attendees-for-a-wild-ride/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">self-driving cars</a>, or replace some of those multi-colored company bikes strewn about Mountain View?

After waiting eleven months just to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/ford-begins-taking-reservations-for-the-focus-electric-pricing/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">profess your intent</a>, what's another two before taking delivery of your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/07/ford-unveils-focus-electric-and-myford-mobile-smartphone-integra/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Focus Electric</a>? That's right, electric hatchback lovers, your pre-ordered chariots just went into production and will be rolling out of Ford's Michigan plant come January. Despite the looming delivery, the automaker has yet to reveal its official range. <em>AutoBlog Green</em> muses that with its 23-kWh pack it'll probably be good for about 70 miles -- comparable to its slightly cheaper competition, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nissan+leaf?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nissan Leaf</a>, which eked out 73 miles from its 24-kWh juice box in official testing. Will Ford spill the beans before CES 2012? Definitively <em>maybe</em>, but in the meantime hit the source to see a bevy of snaps from the production line -- go on, with some luck it might just be yours.

We might not know how much Ford's expecting for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/07/ford-focus-electric-and-mytouch-mobile-hands-on-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Focus Electric</a>, but it's already put a hefty $10,000 price tag on one of its accessories. The company announced today that it has teamed with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/SunPower/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">SunPower</a> to offer purchasers of the upcoming Focus Electric and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/10/ford-announces-c-max-hybrid-and-c-max-energi-plug-in-hybrid-cars/'?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">C-MAX Energi</a> a 2.5-kilowatt rooftop solar system. That setup will apparently provide "enough renewable energy production to offset the energy used for charging" cars that log 1,000 miles per month (about 30 miles per day) or less. If $10,000 is just a little too rich for your blood, there's always Best Buy's $1,500 budget-friendly <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/07/ford-partners-with-leviton-and-best-buy-for-1-499-focus-electr?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">charging station</a>. Tired of trekking down the 101, just to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/25/solarcity-charging-stations-on-highway-101-give-tesla-owners-a-l/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">charge your damn Tesla</a>? Must be <em>rough</em>, but at least SolarCity's looking out for ya, as it'll soon install ClipperCreek's EV chargers in your digs, right alongside the company's residential solar equipment. The $1,500 SAE-J1772 compatible juicers will work with almost any plug-in vehicle we can think of -- including the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/volt?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Volt</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/leaf?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Leaf</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/18/prius-phev-preview-three-days-in-plug-in-paradise/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Prius plug-in</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/focuselectric?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Focus BEV</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/imiev?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iMiev</a> and aforementioned <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tesla+roadster?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Roadster</a> (provided you'll spring for an adapter) -- and being of the Level II ilk, top-up your automobile 5x faster than a 120V plug. Pair that with a solar panel lease, and you'll apparently cut charging costs in-half -- according to SolarCity, anyway. We can't vouch for that, but if it doesn't work you could always try to install something <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/04/spanish-solar-tower-could-eventually-power-an-entire-city/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">just a tad bigger</a>.

AT&amp;T is keeping up its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/20/atandt-agrees-to-buy-t-mobile-from-deutsche-telekom/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">wheeling and dealing</a> this week, signing an agreement with Ford to provide the built-in wireless connectivity for its upcoming Focus Electric hatchback. The deal's pretty simple, really. Ford has put together a comprehensive <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/07/ford-focus-electric-and-mytouch-mobile-hands-on-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">MyFord Mobile</a> application to go with its EV, which will allow you to keep track of and schedule charging, while also serving up status notifications, range information, and nearby recharging stations' locations, the latter facility being provided with the help of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mapquest?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">MapQuest</a>. All that data exchange will need a nice dumb pipe to carry it between the Focus and your smartphone and AT&amp;T is obligingly fulfilling that role -- and don't worry if your phone doesn't support the app (works with Android, BlackBerry and iOS), Ford's got a web interface too. Full PR after the break.

You've heard the announcements. You know the specs. You may even be able to guess how the showdown will play out. But unless you were in San Jose, California, this week for Plug-In 2010, you've probably never seen six contenders for our future electric vehicle dollars all in one room. We hopped in our late-80s gas guzzler and hit the show floor in your stead, snapping enough pictures of the Leaf, Volt, Focus, Prius PHEV, fortwo Electric Drive, and the i MiEV to give you a virtual tour. See what we saw after the break.

Partially paid for by a $15 million grant from the Department of Energy, the ChargePoint America program won't necessarily give you free electricity to go with it -- that "charge" in ChargePoint has a double meaning, after all -- but we're happy to see the zero-emissions future is finally on a roll. The 2010 Detroit Auto Show has just kicked off and Ford's plans for the 2011 Focus have been made official. While others might care more about the 155bhp or new six-speed dual-clutch transmission, we're best pleased by the inclusion of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/07/myford-touch-yields-three-screens-and-a-ford-from-microsoft-auto/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">MyFord touch control system</a>. This setup was designed to drag the car dash into the modern touchscreen era, and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/07/myford-dash-and-sync-app-ecosystem-make-us-want-a-blue-oval/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">our comprehensive hands-on</a> revealed it to be a most impressive bit of tech. Two displays flank the analog speed gauge, but the <i>pi&egrave;ce de r&eacute;sistance</i> is an 8-inch, 800 x 480 optional screen landing in the center of the dash. Endued with a web browser, it'll connect via 3G or 4G modems and concurrently act as a WiFi hotspot. Add in a bunch of forthcoming apps and compatibility with any Bluetooth device, and you've got a tech lover's dream system. The next generation Focus should enter production near the end of 2010, giving us a full year to write a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/01/mazda-rx-8-controlled-with-ipod-touch-batman-said-to-be-jealous/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">"vroom, vroom" app</a> for our smartphones.
