Missouri's Public Service Commission gave Big G the thumbs up on March 1st, and Kansas' Corporation Commission followed suit last Friday, meaning Google now has the green light to provide video services to residents on either side of the state line. Of course, the folks in Mountain View haven't committed to taking down the cable companies just yet, but these approvals put the necessary franchise licensing in place for them to do so if they choose. Comcast, Cox, Time Warner... your newest competitor has arrived.

[Thanks, Jerry]
Google gets go ahead to provide video services to all Kansas City residents originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 19 Mar 2012 14:13:00 EST. Those two cities will bring the total number of Sprint LTE markets to six, as they join the previously announced Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Atlanta. The carrier and CEO Dan Hesse refused to be any more specific about a launch date on today's earnings call, though, we can tell you the service should be launching alongside the Galaxy Nexus, LG Viper and a Sierra Wireless mobile hotspot capable of connecting via CDMA, WiMAX and LTE. We've come a long way since Google first started taking about launching a fiber-based ISP -- from beta tests, to hopeful communities, to Topeka fools day, to selecting not one, but two Kansas Cities. Now, it's "boots on the ground," time according to the Google Fiber blog: detail engineering starts now. In the coming weeks, Kansas City residents (presumably on both sides of the Kansas / Missouri border) can expect to see El Goog's engineers measuring phone poles, gathering geographical data, and asking hard-hitting questions, like "What is your address?" All this footwork will help Google get a head start on building that sweet, ultra-high-speed gigabit network. Not the most glamorous bit of Google magic we've ever seen, but it's still exciting to hear that preliminary work has begun. Of course, it would be even more exciting if this were coming where we lived.
Google Fiber puts boots on the ground, begins detail engineering in Kansas Cities originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 28 Jul 2011 02:59:00 EST. It's gotta be rough being a Kansas City sometimes. It must be a constant cycle of excitement, only to realize that everyone was talking about your identically-named neighbor -- like back in late March, when Google first announced plans to bring its ultra high-speed internet fiber to the Kansas side of the border. Things are looking up for our friends in Kansas City, Missouri, however -- the city's awesomely-named Mayor Sly James held a press conference with Google and Kansas City Power & Light today to announce that his town will be joining in on the bandwidthy fun. Both Kansas Cities can expect to go ultra high-speed next year, pricing on either side of the invisible line remains elusive. Video of joyous local government officials after the break.
Continue reading Google adds Kansas City, MO to list of Kansas Cities covered by ultra high-speed internet (video)

Google adds Kansas City, MO to list of Kansas Cities covered by ultra high-speed internet (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 17 May 2011 13:30:00 EST. We were just wondering what Google was doing with that super-fast gigabit network it promised to set up in one lucky city and here's finally a fresh development. The winner has been chosen and it's Kansas City, Kansas. Having the winning community in its own state will be quite the bitter pill for the people of Topeka to swallow, as they actually renamed their town to Google, Kansas, just to try and appease the Mountain View overlords. Hey, we're sure Google knows best! An agreement has now been signed to roll out the fiber goodness in Kansas City, which should result in gigabit service becoming available to locals in 2012. A press event is scheduled for 1PM ET, which will be livestreamed at the YouTube link below, and you can check out the announcement video after the break while you wait.

Update: That livestream is rolling, folks! Google's reps just said "this is the beginning and not the end." Kansas City, Kansas, will be just the first market where this 1Gbps goodness will be installed. Guess there's hope for the rest of us yet.

Continue reading Google's gigabit fiber network to be built in Kansas City, Kansas; people of Topeka reportedly crestfallen

Google's gigabit fiber network to be built in Kansas City, Kansas; people of Topeka reportedly crestfallen originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 12:20:00 EST. Sounds like fun, no? Find the super-secret phone number that triggers a citywide tornado alarm, dial it up, and watch as Hutchinson, Kansas goes berserk. That's essentially what happened this past week, when an AT&T "software glitch" caused the security systems surrounding the tornado lines to vanish. When the system operates correctly, these sensitive phone numbers can only receive calls from three specific phones; if and when those phones call, alarms are set off to warn residents of impending danger. Due to this here "glitch," all phone numbers were able to dial in, which led to a smattering of false alarms when locals misdialed and accidentally rang the tornado hotlines. Thankfully for everyone involved, the issues have since been fixed, but there's been no word on whether these folks were simply trying to guess Dorothy's unlisted digits.
Phone glitch lets Kansas residents set off tornado alarms by misdialing originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 26 Sep 2010 06:01:00 EST. Kodak stopped manufacturing the oldest film in its catalog last year, but Dwayne's Photo in Parsons, Kansas kept its Kodachrome processing rig around just in case. Last week photographer Steve McCurry processed the final manufactured roll of Kodachrome there - 33 frames taken around New York City, and three taken in Parsons. A crew from National Geographic (where McCurry made his name, specifically with the iconic "Afghan Girl" cover photo) documented the final roll's journey from the factory to processing, so you'll probably be able to find out more on it soon. Oh, and if grandma's a real shutterbug, you might want to tell her to check the attic for any spare Kodachrome rolls she has lying around -- Dwayne's is the last remaining Kodachrome processing facility in the world, and that service will stop on December 10th. Now, if it's quite alright -- pardon us while we attempt to capture a meaningful moment on our soulless Easyshare ecosystem of products.
Final roll of Kodachrome processed in Kansas; angel sheds a rainbow-colored tear originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 21 Jul 2010 19:33:00 EST. Alright, good netizens of Engadget, it's time for us to bring you the sort of hard-hitting news content you can expect only on the first day of April. First on our slate we have the earthshaking news that Google is to officially rename itself Topeka, with the company's official blog urging all future communications to be addressed to Topeka Inc. This is to honor the Kansas town that renamed itself Google in an effort to curry favor with Goog... excuse us, Topeka's 1Gbit broadband program. We also have exclusive and absolutely official confirmation of the forthcoming Android 2.5 update, an inflatable laptop from Toshiba, YouTube's textual deviance, and the hands-down best iPad dock you will ever see. You'll have to come after the break for all those -- they're too hot to handle out in the open. We'll be updating this post as the day goes along, so keep it locked.
Continue reading April Fools' Day roundup: 'let me Topeka that for you' edition

April Fools' Day roundup: 'let me Topeka that for you' edition originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 01 Apr 2010 06:44:00 EST. Topeka area residents have been primarily dealing with Cox Communications for years, but according to a new article in The Capital-Journal, AT&T is about to change that. As of now, U-verse TV is available for ordering in select parts of the city, and if you're curious to know if you're one of the lucky few (relatively), hit the read link and surf over to A the carrier's availability checker.

[Thanks, Kevin]

Topeka, Kansas gets another pay-TV option: AT&T's U-verse TV originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 11 Jan 2009 04:42:00 EST. Effective December 30th, the carrier will add SPEED HD and FX HD to Shawnee County (other areas aren't specified) on slots 641 and 651, respectively. Two days later, MLB Network will show up on digital cable slot 263, with no high-def accomplice in tow. Cox is shuffling around the lineups down in Arkansas and Kansas, but relocation isn't the only process going down. A plethora of new high-definition channels are headed to both locales on November 18th, and here's a look at what's to come: SciFi HD, Bravo HD, Nickelodeon HD, Hallmark Movie Channel HD, Lifetime Movie Network HD, Planet Green HD, CMT HD, VH1 HD, MTV HD and Spike HD. For the full spill of what stations are moving, what stations are vanishing and what stations are being added to what slots, hit the read link and put those sleuthing skills to good use.

Cox adding slew of HD channels in Kansas / Arkansas originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Oct 2008 03:22:00 EST. While Sprint's XOHM network is sticking to the bustling metropolises of the US, Redline is looking to bring the wonders of 4G to those sitting in rural America. Granted, this here deployment isn't the first we've seen in a less-than-dense locale, but thanks to its RedMAX infrastructure products and Nex-Tech's desire to spread the love, a number of cities in the Sunflower State are about to get blanketed with WiMAX. More specifically, we're told that Hays (see above) and Great Bend will get covered by next month, but we're left to assume, er, hope that neighboring towns will fall under the umbrella in due time.

[Via InformationWeek, image courtesy of AirForceBase]

Nex-Tech / Redline bringing WiMAX to Kansas originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 10 Oct 2008 14:39:00 EST. Another first is coming to Wichita: local news in high-definition. The area's CBS affiliate, KWCH-TV, just began running commercials to get residents psyched up about the impending transition to HD. When it flips the switch sometime later this month, it'll be the first local station in the region to air its newscasts in high-def. AT&T already has a small TV footprint in Kansas City, and now neighboring Kansas is finally getting some U-verse love. As of this week, Wichita-area residents have one more choice when it comes to programming, as U-verse TV, high-speed internet and digital phone have arrived. As always, there's no telling whether your domicile is within range, so go ahead and cross your fingers while making the call.

Wichita, Kansas now home to AT&T's U-verse TV originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 12 Aug 2008 02:56:00 EST. Merely hours after hearing that San Diego residents were receiving a letter informing them that SDV was on the way, one particular user in Kansas City has apparently received the same. Better still, he was kind enough to post the full text, which explains that a number of "lesser-viewed" channels will be delivered via SDV as of August 20th. Of course, this means that existing CableCARD users will be out of luck unless they pick up a tuning adapter, and while some carriers have already committed to handing them out to those in need for free, TWC is entirely more ambiguous. The exact verbiage reads: "It is currently contemplated that the Tuning Adapter will be provided at no additional charge," but those unwilling to wait will be forced to pick up one of the carrier's own set-top-boxes in order to see the stations. Historically, Topeka has been one of the last locales in Kansas to get gifted with new HD channels. Nevertheless, quite a few folks in the area are celebrating today as 11 newcomers have joined the fold. From SciFi HD to USA HD to NFL Network HD, Cox has ratcheted Topeka's HD lineup to 36 total stations in addition to HD On Demand. We'll admit, this is a pretty impressive list, and we can only hope it bleeds out to other systems here shortly. Head on past the break for the full rundown of new nets.

[Thanks, Kevin and James]
Continue reading Cox brings 11 new HD channels to Topeka, Kansas

Filed under: Misc, Cable, New content

Cox brings 11 new HD channels to Topeka, Kansas originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 28 May 2008 05:25:00 EST. Although the 2008 MLB season is well underway, we suppose Cox subscribers in Topeka can't complain with being able to catch at least some of the 88 Royals games that are slated to air in high-def on FSN Kansas City. Effective immediately, Cox users in the area can tune in during game times for a high-definition feed of certain matchups, but for whatever reason, these same folks are still waiting to receive the likes of Science HD, Animal Planet HD, Cinemax HD, Travel Channel HD, NFL HD, etc. -- all networks that are already live in smaller locales such as Manhattan and Salina. Keep griping, Topekans, we'd be sour too.

[Image courtesy of A.T. It sure seems like we've been watching this war between Topeka, Kansas' CBS affiliate (WIBW-TV) and Cox Communication wage for an awful lot longer than half a month, but just over a fortnight after this tiff came to a head, everything is seemingly back to normal. As of last night, the station and the carrier have reached an agreement that will enable CBS to remain on Cox's lineup, and just as expected, the terms of the deal are being kept under wraps. Now, if only Topeka could just get those six HD channels that are already available in many other parts of Kansas, all really would be well.

[Thanks, Kevin O.]
Filed under: Industry, CBS, Cable, OTA

Topeka, Kansas CBS affiliate and Cox finally come to terms originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 Mar 2008 13:17:00 EST. As of right now, Topeka, Kansas' CBS affiliate is being dumped from Cox's lineup, and while talks are reportedly continuing, TV viewers in the area now have to turn to alternative methods to catch CBS programming. On an update on the station's website, it actually recommends that consumers call up DISH Network and DirecTV to see what kind of deals they can nab should they be too far away to pull in the signal via OTA. Here's to hoping this situation sees an amicable resolution, and fast.

Update: The deadline has been extended until March 13th, so Cox users can still receive WIBW for a few more days at least.

[Thanks, James H.]
Filed under: Industry, CBS, Cable, OTA

Topeka, Kansas CBS affiliate dumped from Cox originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 08 Mar 2008 11:12:00 EST. According to an updated article on the station's website, Topeka's CBS affiliate is going to remain on Cox Communications' lineup for just a few more days (at least), as "substantial progress" has reportedly been made in determining how much Cox should pay WIBW. As of now, the deadline has been pushed to March 8th, but at this point, we've no reason to believe the bigwigs at Cox won't come to their senses and pony up.

[Thanks, Kevin O.]
Filed under: Industry, CBS, Cable, OTA

Topeka, Kansas CBS affiliate stays on Cox while negotiations continue originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 01 Mar 2008 11:21:00 EST. Nevertheless, said cable carrier has reportedly just "completed the first phase of channel additions for 2008," and there's definitely some HD love mixed in. According to Oklahoma's Tecumseh Countywide News, local residents can now access A&E HD, HGTV HD, Food Network HD, National Geographic HD and Starz HD on channels 972, 973, 975, 976 and 974, respectively. Better still, the outfit has also promised that ESPN2 HD will be joining the fold in the coming months, and just in case that still wasn't enough, subscribers can look forward to Chiller, Fox Business HD and RFD HD showing up in the not-too-distant future. Although Topeka's CBS affiliate is about to be dropped by Cox Communications if it doesn't decide to pay up by midnight, the cable carrier is apparently trying to make up for said inconvenience by tossing in six new HD channels in the Kansas market. Exactly two months after these very folks were gifted with HGTV HD and Food Network HD -- and under three months after receiving CNN HD, TBS HD, Discovery HD and TLC HD -- along comes word that a half dozen newcomers have just stepped in. More specifically, a user report shows Travel Channel HD, Animal Planet HD, Science Channel HD, Versus / Golf HD, Cinemax HD, and NFL Network HD all showing up in the EPG and being available for viewing. We know, it would sting to lose CBS, but you folks definitely can't say you're starving for high-def.

[Thanks, Cory T.]

Cox adds six more HD channels to Kansas lineup originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Feb 2008 02:56:00 EST. Nevertheless, we're looking at yet another classic battle between station and carrier in Topeka, Kansas, as the region's CBS affiliate (WIBW-TV) is threatening to remove its analog and digital HD signals from Cox unless it ponies up in a hurry. Needless to say, WIBW feels that it's not being compensated fairly from Cox for its retransmission of signals, and unless the two parties strike a deal before midnight on Friday, citizens in the area will have to bust out the antenna (or switch to satellite) to catch the looming March Madness. So, what exactly is WIBW asking for? A penny a day for each Cox subscriber.
Filed under: Industry, Regulatory, CBS, Cable, OTA

Topeka, Kansas' CBS affiliate about to be dropped by Cox originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 28 Feb 2008 07:35:00 EST. Unhappy with the lack of cultural integration between Sprint and Nextel since the companies' fateful merger several years ago, new CEO Dan Hesse -- who conveniently already lives in Kansas, having come from Embarq -- is moving corporate headquarters from Reston, Virginia back to Kansas City suburb Overland Park. While 4,400 peeps currently inhabit the Reston location (which it inherited as Nextel's former HQ), the Overland Park campus already employs a much larger base of 13,000. The chief says that Sprint will maintain a "significant" presence out in its Reston offices, but the big boys and girls in the boardroom are going to find themselves back in the land of Toto, tornadoes, and Garmin in the not-too-distant future.

[Via mocoNews]

Sprint packing up, moving HQ to Kansas originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 16 Feb 2008 11:32:00 EST. It's been a long time coming, but the Meridian aircraft that Kansas researchers set out to build late last year is nearly complete. Reportedly, the unmanned polar plane is part of "a larger effort at the University of Kansas's Center for the Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets," and it will head to locales such as Greenland and areas of the Antarctic in order to "provide a detailed picture of ice layers and, in particular, the boundary between ice and ground." To withstand the chilly temperatures it's bound to face, designers have even equipped the wings with de-icing capabilities and heaters to keep the internal electronics from freezing up. If all goes as planned, Meridian will head out on its "maiden flight next summer," with another trip slated for later in 2008.

Kansas researchers readying unmanned polar plane originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 Sep 2007 12:46:00 EST. Legislators in New Jersey are trying to pass a law where it would be illegal to talk on your cellphone and ride your bike. No, not a motorcycle, a bicycle. (Yeah, we know what you're thinking.) The rider would get a ticket for doing such and the fine would range from $100 to $250. We guess it could be worse -- we could live somewhere like Lawrence, Kansas or Honolulu, Hawaii where your cell phone can get you a all all types of trouble with the law.

[Via Textually]

Talking on the phone + riding your bicycle in NJ = $250 ticket originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 25 Jan 2007 05:00:00 EST. While it's not likely to be the most invigorating thing on television come Christmas morning, the folks at WPIX, who are restoring the classic log show for a three-hour broadcast, say that it allows families to reminisce and think back on the gatherings of yesteryear. However, Jason Patton -- vice president for business development on INHD -- feels that the new widescreen version of the heartwarming fireplace is the superior rendition. Shot by Ron Roy in high definition, the picture will clearly outshine the "30 year old" version looping on standard cable, but apparently some folks actually prefer the classic look to the new. Nevertheless, we HD freaks should be sure to catch the fiery new version on INHD starting at 7:00AM on Christmas morning and continuing on for 24 hours.

Legendary Yule Log broadcast pits SD against HD originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 22 Dec 2006 02:53:00 EST.
