	For those of you who think all we do in IRL is wax nostalgic about gadgets we've owned for years, you'd be... mostly right. Indeed, this week we've got Mr. Ben Drawbaugh talking up the HDTV he owns (as opposed to the one he wants), and James is here to break down the limitations of his discontinued Tonium Pacemaker. We've got one happy new gadget owner, though, and that would be Zach Honig, who recently traded his iPhone 4 for a Samsung Galaxy Note. So how's that S-Pen working out for him? Head past the break to find out.</div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/28/irl-pioneer-kuro-pdp-6010fd-tonium-pacemaker-and-the-samsung-g/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>IRL: Pioneer Kuro PDP-6010FD, Tonium Pacemaker and the Samsung Galaxy Note</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/28/irl-pioneer-kuro-pdp-6010fd-tonium-pacemaker-and-the-samsung-g/">IRL: Pioneer Kuro PDP-6010FD, Tonium Pacemaker and the Samsung Galaxy Note</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 28 Dec 2011 14:32:00 EST. Earlier today, Sharp and Pioneer <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/04/sharp-resurrects-elite-line-of-led-lcd-tvs-pricing-starts-at-5/">re-launched the Elite brand</a>, with its Pro-60X5FD and Pro-70X5FD LED LCD TVs. Both models cater to the high-end home entertainment crowd, with pricing set at $6,000 and $8,500, for the 60-inch and 70-inch sets, respectively. We had a chance to take a look at the larger model at an event in New York City this morning, and were certainly impressed with its high contrast and excellent deep black levels. Set against a black wall, it was nearly impossible to distinguish a black image from the TV's brushed aluminum bezel or the wall behind it when viewed in a pitch-black room. Plasma TVs, such as Pioneer's discontinued <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Kuro/">Kuro</a>, have been able to achieve deep black levels for years, but LCD TVs like the Elite we saw today historically suffer from light bleeding, which causes black images to appear gray.<br />
<br />
The Elite TV also includes built-in speakers, which sounded fine in a noisy room, but considering that you'll be spending north of $6,000 for the smaller set, we imagine you'll be pairing either model with some external speakers as well. Internet connectivity alone certainly isn't going to motivate anyone to spend this much to outfit their home theater with a high-end set, but streaming is important nonetheless, so we were happy to see that Sharp included a somewhat diverse offering of services. The TVs ship with apps for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Netflix/">Netflix</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Vudu/">Vudu</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/CinemaNow/">CinemaNow</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/YouTube/">YouTube</a>, along with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Facebook/">Facebook</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Twitter/">Twitter</a> -- there's also a dedicated Netflix button on the remote, letting you access the movie streaming service without clicking through several menu levels. Overall, we were impressed with the Elite during today's brief demonstration, but we'll need to wait for the full review before we can determine whether Sharp can justify those sky-high price tags.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sharp-elite-led-lcd-tvs-hands-on/">Sharp Elite LED LCD TVs Hands-On</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sharp-elite-led-lcd-tvs-hands-on/#4344071"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-04-dsc07980_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sharp-elite-led-lcd-tvs-hands-on/#4344072"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-04-dsc07983_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sharp-elite-led-lcd-tvs-hands-on/#4344070"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-04-dsc07977_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sharp-elite-led-lcd-tvs-hands-on/#4344073"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-04-dsc07984_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sharp-elite-led-lcd-tvs-hands-on/#4344074"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-04-dsc07985_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/04/sharp-elite-led-lcd-tv-hands-on-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sharp Elite LED LCD TV hands-on (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/04/sharp-elite-led-lcd-tv-hands-on-video/">Sharp Elite LED LCD TV hands-on (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 04 Aug 2011 10:52:00 EST. Remember Pioneer's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Kuro/">Kuro</a> brand of HDTVs? The high-end plasma line became the benchmark for the home theater market, leaving a rather large void in the hearts of the HD obsessive after it kicked the bucket two years ago. Now, Sharp and Pioneer are bringing back some of the technology used in that line, while leaving the Kuro name to rest in peace. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/27/pioneer-elite-hdtvs-to-ride-again-in-2011-as-rebranded-sharp/">Elite branding</a> will remain, however, with the new line of LED LCD TVs. Available in 60-inch and 70-inch flavors, the new Elites will only be available through high-end retailers, and will be priced at $6,000 and $8,500, respectively. The Pro-60X5FD will ship in the US next week, and the Pro-70X5FD will hit stores later this month.<br />
<br />
Among the sets' features, Sharp promises excellent contrast ratios, high color fidelity, and very low black levels, thanks to zone-based local dimming. The company claims a frame rate of "about 720hz," thanks to 240Hz quadrupling and scanning backlight technology. The TVs also include Sharp's quad-pixel technology, complementing the typical RGB pixel arrangement with a fourth, yellow sub-pixel. This sounds similar to the company's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/22/george-takei-cant-show-you-sharps-fourth-pixel-can-still-blow/">Quattron technology</a>, though Sharp doesn't appear to be using that name with its new Elite line. There's also 3D functionality, and Internet connectivity, with pre-loaded Netflix, Vudu, and social media apps. The TVs also include Elite Advantage Live, for real-time remote technical support. We're at the Elite event in New York City, so stay tuned for more details and a full hands-on later this morning.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/04/sharp-resurrects-elite-line-of-led-lcd-tvs-pricing-starts-at-5/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sharp and Pioneer resurrect Elite with line of LED LCD TVs, pricing starts at $6,000</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/04/sharp-resurrects-elite-line-of-led-lcd-tvs-pricing-starts-at-5/">Sharp and Pioneer resurrect Elite with line of LED LCD TVs, pricing starts at $6,000</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 04 Aug 2011 09:40:00 EST. Every year since that sad day <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/24/pioneer-outlines-kuro-plasma-exit-insinuates-that-you-should-bu/">Pioneer announced its exodus from the plasma TV</a> market videophiles have looked to Panasonic to take the baton forward and push picture quality to new heights, but so far it has come up short in the one metric that many consider the most important; black levels. Plenty of TVs have great realistic colors, vivid whites and great contrast, but there is something about staring into the abyss that is a Kuro that warms the heart. So while it is debatable whether a TV with better contrast, but greyer blacks can be better than a Kuro, the debate might be over if Panasonic's engineers are to be believed. At an event in New York City last week they did just that, telling members of the press that Panasonic's new VT30 line will indeed match the black levels of the 2009 Kuros. Apparently the key is the new and improved louver structure of the filter that blocks reflective light, which block ambient light -- and Kuro fans are mocked for saying the Kuro is blacker when its off than other TVs, ha. We'll have to wait to see if the reviewers agree before we get excited, but it is still pretty crazy to think it's taken this long for the industry to catch up with where Pioneer was years ago in at least one category.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/13/could-this-be-the-year-the-kuro-is-completely-dethroned/">Could this be the year the Kuro is completely dethroned?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 13 Mar 2011 20:28:00 EST. It was a dark day when <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Pioneer/">Pioneer</a> announced its mighty <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/tag/kuro/">Kuro</a> HDTVs would be no more, but the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/pioneerelite/">Pioneer Elite</a> brand still has significant cachet and will return in 2011 on new high end TVs. The bad news? They will be LCDs, not plasmas, manufactured by its partner Sharp, a not entirely surprising move since this was actually the <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2008/03/07/pioneer-officially-ends-in-house-plasma-production-kuro-lcds-co/">original plan for the Kuro brand</a> back in 2008. Apparently both see potential as Sharp will gain access to higher-end AV salesrooms and integrators for its products, while Pioneer will have TVs to match its continuing Pioneer Elite Blu-ray player and receiver lines. Despite an impressive local dimming demo at CES we're still not sure Sharp can <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/22/george-takei-cant-show-you-sharps-fourth-pixel-can-still-blow/">create enough new pixels</a> to replace what we once had, but we should find out for sure when the new models arrive the end of the year, check the press release after the break for more details.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/27/pioneer-elite-hdtvs-to-ride-again-in-2011-as-rebranded-sharp/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Pioneer Elite HDTVs to ride again in 2011... as rebranded Sharp LCDs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/27/pioneer-elite-hdtvs-to-ride-again-in-2011-as-rebranded-sharp/">Pioneer Elite HDTVs to ride again in 2011... as rebranded Sharp LCDs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 27 Jan 2011 20:58:00 EST. While most HDTV manufactures are focused on being thin and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/3D/">3D</a>, Panasonic still recognizes the importance of having great contrast and deep blacks. Hidden away in the Panasonic booth we pulled back the curtain on a contrast demo and walked away impressed. Now obviously black levels are very hard to compare without being either being very familiar with the content or by having the two TVs next to each other, but one thing is for sure, the 2010 Panasonic plasmas (on the left in the picture above) have better black levels than the previous models (pictured on the right). We snapped a few pictures (second one with a slower shutter after the break) where you can see the difference, and judging by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/26/panasonics-tc-p54v10-plasma-crowned-king-so-sayeth-the-hd-guru/">how close the V10 series was to the ultra deep blacks of the Kuro</a>, we wouldn't be one bit surprised if the new Panny sets make us forget about the discontinued <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Kuro/">Kuro</a> line once and for all -- it might just be wishful thinking.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/11/panasonics-2010-plasma-line-has-much-better-black-levels/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Panasonic's 2010 plasma line has much better black levels</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/11/panasonics-2010-plasma-line-has-much-better-black-levels/">Panasonic's 2010 plasma line has much better black levels</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 11 Jan 2010 14:54:00 EST. If you were afraid that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/16/pioneer-exec-touches-on-exit-from-plasma-business/">post-Kuro</a> Pioneer would retreat to car audio, fear not, because the company has plans to soldier on in the HT space with a marketing message that emphasizes both its A/V specialty roots and "balanced" home-A/V product lineup. As much as we love those Kuro plasmas, there's no denying that the prices didn't exactly jive well with the company's efforts to get consumers to recognize the value proposition in its other products. We'll admit that everyday consumers (read: not Engadget HD readers) looking to assemble a one-brand system could have been scared off of the Pioneer name by the Kuro prices, but we wish Pioneer would have kept its plasmas around as an "aspirational" product and allowed shoppers to cross-shop displays by building in deep, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/25/onkyos-tx-sa606x-receiver-handles-aquos-viera-and-regza-hdmi-c/">off-brand HDMI-CEC</a> support into its other electronics. Wiping our fanboy tears aside, we have to give Pioneer credit -- its current lineup of electronics (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/pioneer,receiver">AVRs</a> especially) stack up competitively on the value-o-meter; which is good, because with companies like Denon, Onkyo and Yamaha around, it's in for a tough fight.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/blu-ray/" rel="tag">Blu-ray</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/receivers/" rel="tag">Receivers</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/speakers/" rel="tag">Speakers</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/pioneer/" rel="tag">Pioneer</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/19/pioneer-plots-a-kuro-less-future-in-the-home-theater-market/">Pioneer plots a Kuro-less future in the home theater market</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 19 Aug 2009 17:23:00 EST. It's not <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/colorware">Colorware</a>, the black Wii and red DSi are coming straight out of Nintendo Japan. The black Wii (or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/kuro">"KURO</a> Wii" to be precise) is particularly interesting as it's been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/29/black-and-red-nintendo-wiis-already-confirmed/">rumored for over two years</a> now. Ok, it's not that interesting but it sure is edgy... right? Oh nevermind. Expect the &yen;25,000 black Wii with like-colored Wiimote, nunchuck, and classic controller to hit Japan on August 1st and the &yen;18,900 red DSi on July 11th. Red DSi after the break.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/">Joystiq</a>]<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/04/black-nintendo-wii-red-dsi-this-summer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Black Nintendo Wii, red DSi this summer</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/04/black-nintendo-wii-red-dsi-this-summer/">Black Nintendo Wii, red DSi this summer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 04 Jun 2009 03:34:00 EST. Pioneer's decision to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/12/pioneer-officially-leaving-the-tv-biz-by-march-2010-focusing-on/">axe the Kuro</a> earlier this year set off a wave of gloomy predictions about the future of plasma, but we've never really bought into it -- and it sounds like the product planners at LG, Samsung, and Panasonic haven't either. HD Guru asked reps from each company for their thoughts on the state of the plasma market, and the responses were pretty similar across the board: plasma remains the connoisseur's choice overall, and it still makes up just about half of 50-inch and bigger sales. Of course, that means that plasma's niche is shrinking and moving higher-end while LCDs more or less take over the rest of HDTV market, but until something like OLED develops into a true competitor we think plasma's around for a while. Maybe <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Pioneer/">Pioneer</a> just needs to change shipping companies here, but we're seeing a frighteningly high amount of cracked screens on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/24/pioneer-outlines-kuro-plasma-exit-insinuates-that-you-should-bu/">KRP-600M</a> over at <em>AVSForum</em>. The problem has become so bad, in fact, that users have started a dedicated thread just to grumble about it. Thus far, 11 responders have seen their precious plasma arrive with a cracked screen, while 18 received theirs in good shape -- not a good ratio in terms of quality control standards. We aren't sounding the fire alarm just yet, but we're curious, have any of you unboxed your shiny new set only to weep for hours due to a busted panel?<br /><br />[Thanks, Gio]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/misc/" rel="tag">Misc</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/pioneer/" rel="tag">Pioneer</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/plasma/" rel="tag">Plasma</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/29/pioneer-krp-600m-plasma-showing-up-with-cracked-screens/">Pioneer KRP-600M plasma showing up with cracked screens?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 29 Mar 2009 11:38:00 EST. Okay, so maybe that harshly translated version of Pioneer's recent <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/KURO/">KURO</a>-related press release doesn't actually encourage prospective buyers to snag a unit while they still can, but it may as well have. Following up on the outfit's curious decision to <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/02/26/does-the-death-of-kuro-signal-the-end-of-the-plasma/">abandon a product line</a> that was universally <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/10/01/pioneers-new-kuro-line-the-new-reference-for-contrast/">adored</a>, Pioneer has decided that just <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/06/25/pioneer-gets-official-with-four-kuro-plasmas-media-receiver/">four of its PDPs</a> will stay in production until April 11th. After 3,000 or so of the KRP-500A, KRP-500M, KRP-600A and KRP-600M units have been produced, the lines will be shut down and we'll all be invited to what will undoubtedly be a tear-filled memorial service. The company has also made clear that warranty service will still be provided for an undisclosed amount of time (at least in Japan), but there has yet to be a statement made specifically regarding the North American market.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.slashgear.com/pioneer-confirm-kuro-exit-strategy-last-plasmas-in-april-2438679/">Slashgear</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdtv/" rel="tag">HDTV</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/24/pioneer-outlines-kuro-plasma-exit-insinuates-that-you-should-bu/">Pioneer outlines KURO plasma exit, insinuates that you should buy one now</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 24 Mar 2009 15:02:00 EST. It's kind of amazing, really. Not even a year ago, Pioneer was busy pimping its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/07/second-generation-pioneer-kuro-unveiled-5x-deeper-black-levels/">second-gen KURO</a>, and by and large, everyone that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/07/pioneer-kuro-and-friends-hands-on/">witnessed one</a> in person came away impressed. So, if Pioneer's plasmas were so spectacular, how on Earth did we find ourselves asking if PDPs even have a future beyond 2010? Not long after the economy began to soften, LCDs began to catch up. Sure, a side-by-side test would likely show that an Elite KURO has deeper blacks than the average LCD, but as <em>GigaOM</em> points out, the average consumer was beyond the point of caring. Since the beginning of this year, we've already <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/12/pioneer-officially-leaving-the-tv-biz-by-march-2010-focusing-on/">seen</a> two plasma players <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/11/vizio-kicks-plasma-to-the-curb-will-focus-on-lcd-tvs/">drop out completely</a>, and one must wonder how long those other guys will keep holding on. Is the death of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/KURO/">KURO</a> the tipping point for plasma? We'd love to think otherwise, but our gut is leaning to "yes." What say you, dear readers?<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/pioneer/" rel="tag">Pioneer</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/plasma/" rel="tag">Plasma</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/26/does-the-death-of-kuro-signal-the-end-of-the-plasma/">Does the death of KURO signal the end of the plasma?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 26 Feb 2009 09:20:00 EST. Yeah, it seems like hopping off of the plasma bandwagon is the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/11/vizio-kicks-plasma-to-the-curb-will-focus-on-lcd-tvs/">thing to be doing</a> right now, but Pioneer's exit is startling in more than a few ways. For starters, the company has been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/07/second-generation-pioneer-kuro-unveiled-5x-deeper-black-levels/">pushing</a> its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/KURO/">KURO</a> line as <em>the</em> PDP set to get for years, and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/09/pioneers-kuro-pdp-6020fd-plasma-gets-reviewed/">by and large</a>, it actually has been the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/01/pioneers-new-kuro-line-the-new-reference-for-contrast/">best around</a>. It's one thing to leave a market you aren't winning -- it's another entirely to drop off while you're on top. Bruce Schepers, Executive VP of Sales and Marketing at Pioneer Canada, sat down to speak on the departure with <em>Marketnews</em>. Granted, most of his conversation centered around that fact that no other parts of the company's businesses would be shrinking or vanishing, though he did mention that Pioneer would have ninth generation product "up until summer." He also affirmed that support wouldn't be waning for its heralded receivers and Blu-ray players, and that Sharp was a likely candidate for an optical-based joint venture. On the upside, the restructuring deadline is March 2010, so a predicted net 130 billion yen ($1.44 billion) loss shouldn't be enough to get between you and the plasma HDTV of your dreams. The company's U.S. and U.K. plants are shutting down by April and February of this year, respectively, and product development for TVs beyond what's currently on the market is ending, seeing no prospects for improving profitability even after combining <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/03/07/pioneer-officially-ends-in-house-plasma-production-kuro-lcds-co/">plasma efforts with Panasonic</a> and LCDs with Sharp. Overall, there will be 10,000 fewer full time and temporary Pioneer employees than there were at the end of last year, while pay and bonuses for execs have been cut. The future for Pioneer? On the upside, the restructuring deadline is March 2010, so a predicted net 130 billion yen ($1.44 billion) loss shouldn't be enough to get between you and the plasma HDTV of your dreams. The company's U.S. and U.K. plants are shutting down by April and February of this year, respectively, and product development for TVs beyond what's currently on the market is ending, seeing no prospects for improving profitability even after combining <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/07/pioneer-officially-ends-in-house-plasma-production-kuro-lcds-co/">plasma efforts with Panasonic</a> and LCDs with Sharp. Overall, there will be 10,000 fewer full time and temporary Pioneer employees than there were at the end of last year, while pay and bonuses for execs have been cut. The future for Pioneer? Mostly car audio, including in-car Blu-ray players and networked electronics, while its home electronics business focus on audio, DJ equipment and cable TV boxes, with a focus on using its expertise in improving sound. No need to wait for the CEDIA Gold Coast expo to see new plasmas from Pioneer, as the company has just announced a few new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/KURO/">KURO</a>s for those residing in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Australia/">Australia</a>. The 50-inch PDP-LX509A and PDP-C509A have both been officially announced (though whispers of 'em have been circulating for a few weeks now), and the MSRPs are expectedly staggering. AU$6,499 for the LX model, AU$5,499 for the C509A -- yeah, ouch.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.cnet.com.au/tvs/plasma/0,239035288,339294445,00.htm">CNET</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/pioneer/" rel="tag">Pioneer</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/plasma/" rel="tag">Plasma</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/19/pioneer-launches-new-kuro-plasmas-in-australia/">Pioneer launches new KURO plasmas in Australia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 19 Jan 2009 07:20:00 EST. Remember that pair of vivid KUROs we got wind of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/24/pioneer-releases-colored-bezel-kuros-to-europe/">around a month ago</a>? You know, that limited run set that would only be available to deep-pocketed souls in Europe? Yeah, well we've finally got an official release from Pioneer confirming their existence, not to mention a plethora of drool-worthy images. Both the beige KRP-500ABG and the white KRP-500AW are on sale across the pond for &euro;4,499 ($5,741) apiece, though you'd better hurry -- with an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/economy/">economy</a> like this, the affluent are apt to have these <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/11/10/131k-softbank-823sh-tiffany-handset-sells-out-in-three-days/">snapped up</a> in no time flat just to rub it in the layman's face.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.marcush.de%2F2008%2F11%2F23%2Fsonderserie-der-pioneer-kuro-plasma-tv-mit-media-receiver%2F&amp;sl=de&amp;tl=en&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8">Marcush</a>]<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/pioneers-limited-edition-white-beige-kuro-plasmas-now-available/">Pioneer's limited edition white / beige KURO plasmas now available</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/pioneers-limited-edition-white-beige-kuro-plasmas-now-available/#1183528"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/11/mini-krp_beige_angle1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/pioneers-limited-edition-white-beige-kuro-plasmas-now-available/#1183529"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/11/mini-krp_beige_angle2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/pioneers-limited-edition-white-beige-kuro-plasmas-now-available/#1183530"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/11/mini-krp_beige_angle3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/pioneers-limited-edition-white-beige-kuro-plasmas-now-available/#1183531"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/11/mini-krp_beige_detail1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/pioneers-limited-edition-white-beige-kuro-plasmas-now-available/#1183532"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/11/mini-krp_beige_detail2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/pioneer/" rel="tag">Pioneer</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/plasma/" rel="tag">Plasma</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/24/pioneers-limited-edition-white-beige-kuro-plasmas-now-availab/">Pioneer's limited edition white / beige KURO plasmas now available</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 24 Nov 2008 23:38:00 EST. Talk about a marketing catastrophe. Apparently no one told Pioneer's promotional firm what <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/BlackFriday/">Black Friday</a> is (hint: it's a day for unprecedented price cuts to get consumers to camp out in the cold for a deeply discounted blender), as it has inexplicably decided to re-coin the holiday "KURO Friday." Why do such a thing? To quote Pioneer, it's to "celebrate the creative visionaries" who helped bring KURO to life. In other words, KURO Friday <em>is not</em> being established to announce sweet, sweet price drops on all <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/KURO/">KURO</a> wares. Two thumbs way down, Pioneer.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/misc/" rel="tag">Misc</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/blu-ray/" rel="tag">Blu-ray</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/pioneer/" rel="tag">Pioneer</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/lcd/" rel="tag">LCD</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/plasma/" rel="tag">Plasma</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/advertising/" rel="tag">Advertising</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/20/pioneer-rechristens-black-friday-kuro-friday-wont-lower-pric/">Pioneer rechristens Black Friday "KURO Friday," won't lower prices</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 20 Nov 2008 09:17:00 EST. At first glance, it's easy to say that Pioneer is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/03/pioneer-forecasts-even-wider-net-loss-names-new-president/">certainly <em>not</em> one of those outfits</a> with nothing to fret over, but according to Masao Kawabata, chairman and CEO of Pioneer North America, things aren't nearly as bad as they seem. In a recent interview, he explained that while he was saddened about the recent events surrounding <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/31/tweeter-gets-a-rock-closes-distribution-centers/">Tweeter</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/10/circuit-city-files-for-bankruptcy/">Circuit City</a>, he still felt that "strong relationships with independent channels" would spur sales. In fact, he noted that "premium products [read: Pioneer products] are not subject to too much of the ups and downs of the economy, and for those who can [afford] the very best they will go and shop for the very best." Make no mistake -- <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/KURO/">KURO</a> flat-panels and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/28/pioneer-bdp-95fd-unboxed/">Elite Blu-ray players</a> aren't the cheapest on the block, but we're still hesitant to say they're recession proof.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/pioneer/" rel="tag">Pioneer</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/18/pioneer-ceo-expects-its-flat-panel-sales-to-prevail-through-econ/">Pioneer CEO expects its flat-panel sales to prevail through economic downturn</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 18 Nov 2008 07:13:00 EST. For those ensconced in the Arizona desert and looking for a new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/KURO/">KURO</a>, you're in luck. Pioneer has just swung the doors open on its second US retail store, a 3,200 square-foot facility situated in the Northeast Valley of Phoenix, Arizona. The outfit opened its first US store in Orange County, California in August of 2006, and both stores will be responsible for selling a wide variety of Pioneer gear, most notably KURO flat-panels, Blu-ray decks and speakers / headphones typically reserved for the Japanese market. Now, if it manages to notch anything close to an impressive amount of sales (without vast, deep discounts) in this <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/economy/">economy</a>, you can color us floored.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/misc/" rel="tag">Misc</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/pioneer/" rel="tag">Pioneer</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/15/pioneer-opens-second-us-retail-store-in-phoenix-arizona/">Pioneer opens second US retail store in Phoenix, Arizona</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 15 Nov 2008 15:06:00 EST. Anyone remotely familiar with the <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/KURO/">KURO</a> brand knows that with it comes the expectation of awesomeness (and a large price tag), and the question on everyone's mind has been: will the <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/06/25/pioneer-kuro-lcds-get-official-european-rollout/">KURO LCD</a> line live up to the name? According to <em>TrustedReview</em>'s critique of the 37-inch KRL-37V, the answer is a resounding "yes." The reviewers put together five long-winded pages detailing the ins and outs of this here set, but in general, they found that it produced better pictures than most other LCDs on the market today, and that's <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/09/23/sharps-46-inch-aquos-lc-46x8e-gets-reviewed/">saying something</a>. Sure, it wasn't without its flaws -- there were occurrences where odd color tones popped up in SD footage, black levels weren't <em>astonishing</em> and the viewing angles weren't the greatest -- but the colors in HD were simply terrific. 'Tis a shame we North Americans will have to wait until <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/09/17/pioneer-to-launch-lcd-hdtvs-in-north-america-next-year/">sometime next year</a> before we can even have a look for ourselves, but those in Europe may want to give this one some serious attention.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.hdtvlounge.net/pioneer/kuro-krl-37v/">HDTV Lounge</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdtv/" rel="tag">HDTV</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/03/pioneers-37-inch-krl-37v-kuro-lcd-reviewed-other-lcds-should-b/">Pioneer's 37-inch KRL-37V KURO LCD reviewed: other LCDs should be scared</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 03 Nov 2008 14:06:00 EST. This must be the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/19/vizio-emerges-from-the-tanning-bed-with-copper-toned-lcds/">new</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/29/samsung-unveils-latest-series-6-touch-of-color-lcd-hdtvs/">trend</a> in TVs -- Pioneer has released its own colored bezel Kuro models in Europe, but rather than make the tint an option, it's been elevated to "feature" level through limited production runs. Only 1,000 lucky folks will bring home the Beige Gris&eacute; KRP-500ABG, while the membership roll for the White KRP-500AW will be less exclusive at 1,500. Don't be alarmed, the "Kuro" name only applies to the image, not the set itself -- as Pioneer demonstrated earlier this year with its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/12/new-pioneer-does-whites-too/">Shiro Kuro</a> set. Other than the bezel, these are looking identical to their "any color, as long as it's black" <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/25/pioneer-gets-official-with-four-kuro-plasmas-media-receiver/">brethren</a>, including the media receivers tethered by a single cable. If this trend continues, we'll soon see a new cottage industry based on retrofit colored-bezels.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/pioneer/" rel="tag">Pioneer</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/plasma/" rel="tag">Plasma</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/24/pioneer-releases-colored-bezel-kuros-to-europe/">Pioneer releases colored bezel Kuros to Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 24 Oct 2008 17:22:00 EST. With plasma sets apparently <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/09/plasma-surprisingly-gaining-ground-on-lcd/">gaining back</a> some of that ground it has been losing to LCD for, like, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/22/lcd-outsells-plasma-8-to-1-in-q1-2008/">ever now</a>, this question from Raul seemed like the perfect fit for this week's edition of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/ask-engadgethd/">Ask Engadget HD</a>. <br /><br />"I've got my heart set on getting a new plasma on Black Friday or as the holiday sales get going, but I'm running into too many options that I think will work. Obviously, I want deep blacks and the ability to hang it on my wall, but I'm trying to keep the cost down. Are these <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/16/vizio-42-inch-plasma-for-under-a-grand-on-black-friday/">Vizio PDPs</a> even worth looking at? Help!" <br /><br />Surely more than a few of you out there have plasmas -- KURO or otherwise -- and are willing to throw this guy a bone. No size was mentioned, but we're guessing he's looking in the 42- to 50-inch range. In case CNET's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/21/pioneers-32-37-inch-kuro-lcd-hdtvs-get-hands-on-treatment/">pics</a> of the upcoming Pioneer KURO LCDs weren't enough to get your wild speculation going, and you can't get over to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/08/pioneers-37-inch-krl-37v-kuro-lcd-hdtv-on-sale-in-german-shop/">Germany</a> to pick one up for yourself, some more photos of the KRL-32V, 37V and 46V sets have emerged from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ceatec2008/">CEATEC</a> show. Getting good photos from the tradeshow floor is tough, but these pics (especially the ones against a black backdrop) look promising in terms of black level, at least. The linked post hints that the LCDs may not have quite measured up to the namesake plasmas, so remember what we said about show floor pics. Still, even if Pioneer is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/07/pioneer-officially-ends-in-house-plasma-production-kuro-lcds-co/">sourcing</a> the panels from Sharp, we're encouraged by the focus on image quality over slim profiles. On the whole, we'd say <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/KURO/">KURO</a> plasma owners are <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/03/pioneer-kuro-pdp-5080hd-tops-home-theater-mags-hdtv-shoot-out/">pretty stoked</a> about their sets. Those who'd prefer a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/07/pioneer-officially-ends-in-house-plasma-production-kuro-lcds-co/">KURO-branded LCD</a>, however, have been waiting anxiously to hear something more from ole Pioneer for months. Thankfully, the firm has finally spoken, and while it doesn't mention any brand / model names specifically, we can assume that those LCD HDTVs we saw <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/21/pioneers-32-37-inch-kuro-lcd-hdtvs-get-hands-on-treatment/">emerge in Europe</a> will be gracing US shores in mere months. During the first half of 2009, Pioneer LCD HDTVs will be loosed in North America and Asia, and unless plans change, the panels within will actually be supplied <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/05/pioneer-stuck-between-sharp-and-panasonic-as-it-exits-plasma-produ/">by Sharp</a>. Home Theater magazine got its hands on Pioneer's 60-inch <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/07/second-generation-pioneer-kuro-unveiled-5x-deeper-black-levels/">KURO PDP-6020FD</a> plasma, and surprise, surprise -- it's the set to beat for now. By now, KURO black levels and contrast are so well established that not much ink needs to be spilled over them, except to say that the ninth generation 6020FD bested the reigning champ <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/08/pioneer-announces-8th-gen-plasmas-with-20-000-1-contrast">Elite PRO-150FD</a>, but the review does a good job of finding nits to pick. Most notably, infinitely tweakable parameters like color temperature and sharpening are missing; we're guessing these are design choices made to leave room for the Pioneer Elite models. We have to wonder, though, how many high-end plasma shoppers (at $5500, are there any other kind?) will be willing to give up full calibration capability.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/pioneer/" rel="tag">Pioneer</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/plasma/" rel="tag">Plasma</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/09/pioneers-kuro-pdp-6020fd-plasma-gets-reviewed/">Pioneer's Kuro PDP-6020FD plasma gets reviewed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 09 Sep 2008 12:14:00 EST. Pioneer's top of the line <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/05/07/pioneer-intros-2008-signature-series-elite-kuro-monitors/">Elite Signature Series Kuro plasmas</a> are finally officially priced and shipping, but make a decision quick, word on the street is these "limited run" screens have been finding their way into more than a few installers pipelines over the last few weeks. At 2.5-inches thick, these panels -- hand selected for the deepest blacks and accurate colors --- will fit anywhere you'd like to have them installed, and each unique serial number gives access to a Pioneer website for that specific monitor's certified factory white balance setting. A slew of tweaks and calibrations for your guy to run through when he's putting this in are also part of the package, ultimately contributing to a $5,500 (PRO-101FD, 50-inch) or $7,000 (PRO-141FD, 60-inch) price tag. Lookee here, our first sight at what Pioneer's bringing to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/CEDIA/">CEDIA</a>. For the audio crowd, it's unveiling a mind-boggling 16 new speaker models including four floorstanding subwoofers. The new line of "dynamic architectural loudspeakers (pictured after the jump) come in three different performance levels - Elite EX Series, Pioneer CST and plain ole Pioneer. As you can likely imagine, we don't have the luxury of space here to cover the sweet sixteen, but everything is laid out nicely in the link below. In somewhat related news, the outfit has also announced a new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/KURO/">KURO</a> brand campaign that "embodies transformation." We'll spare you the marketing hoopla, but there's a nice link down there should you want to dive in.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/PressRoom/Press+Releases/Pioneer+Introduces+New+Line+of+Architectural+Speakers+to+Provide+Final+Piece+of+Home+Entertainment+Experience">Read</a> - 16 new speaker models<br /><a href="http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/PressRoom/Press+Releases/Pioneer+Launches+New+KURO+Brand+Campaign+that+Embodies+Transformation">Read</a> - New KURO campaign<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/04/pioneer-goes-crazy-with-16-new-speaker-models-kuro-brand-push/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Pioneer goes crazy with 16 new speaker models, KURO brand push</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/speakers/" rel="tag">Speakers</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/pioneer/" rel="tag">Pioneer</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/advertising/" rel="tag">Advertising</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/04/pioneer-goes-crazy-with-16-new-speaker-models-kuro-brand-push/">Pioneer goes crazy with 16 new speaker models, KURO brand push</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 04 Sep 2008 10:12:00 EST.
