HTC HD7 gets its .bins all in a tizzy, custom ROMs up next?

What do you get when you cross an HTC HD7 with a Mondrian ROM? Or a Schubert ROM? ('Elephino... wait, that's not right.) Nothing too crazy, we imagine, but in doing so, xda-developers patron ansar.ath.gr has provided a proof of concept that custom ROMs can be implemented on Windows Phone 7 devices. In more technical terms, "this proves that the imgfs.bin can be used from any branded device to any other branded device." It's okay, you don't have to know what an imgfs.bin is, but if you're the sort who likes to tweak phones well beyond what's in the settings menu / user manual, just be patient and know there's at least a few brilliant coders who'll capitalize on this freshly laid groundwork.

Steve Ballmer teases three WP7 handsets on Today, gets no respect from Matt Lauer

Today's going to be a big day for Microsoft, and Steve Ballmer's kicking it off early. Showing up on the Today show, Samsung Cetus in-hand, he let loose a humble smile and spent a little time showing off a trio of phones. Along with the Cetus, nestled in the middle in the picture below, is an LG C900 on the right and an HTC Mondrian on the left, none of which got as much face time as the man himself, who took a (tersely) polite ribbing from host Matt Lauer about the status of Microsoft's mobile efforts compared to the competition over the past year, even making mention of Ballmer's recently cut bonus thanks in part to the Kin debacle. Steve was having none of that, not interested in looking back, showing off an "always consistent" interface that is simply "delightful" according to the man. How delightful is it? Look to learn a lot more as the day progresses.

HTC Mondrian render teases AT&T U-verse Mobile for Windows Phone 7, looks fatter than last time

Not that the connection between AT&T and HTC's Mondrian WP7 handset was under much doubt anymore, but here's the first image purporting to show the carrier-branded version of the device. The render is provided by 911sniper, whose long and distinguished record of leaking legit HTC ROMs leads us to believe it is indeed the real deal. It's curious then to juxtapose the somewhat bulky Mondrian on show here against the press imagery recently unearthed by BestBoyZ -- are we still looking at the same device? Our eyeball geometry would suggest not. Anyway, there's not too long left to go until Microsoft tidies this alphabet soup of codenames up for us, and until then we suggest just enjoying that tantalizing tile titled AT&T U-verse Mobile.

HTC Spark leaked in the wild, shows off plenty of WP7 goodness

Well, it was only a matter of time -- first the leaked press shots of this elusive HTC Spark (although possibly misidentified as the Mondrian back then -- note the shinier earpiece in the leaked AT&T ad), and now the real thing is in the hands of some lucky hardware tester. Fortunately for us, this guy also happens to have a naughty friend over at xda-developers -- you'll see in his photos that HTC Hub is alive and well on this 8GB handset, but otherwise, there's not much info coming out of here. Regardless, feel free to head over to the source link for more Windows Phone 7 eye candy -- you'll need to register first, though, so we've grabbed a few shots below to get things going.

HTC Mondrian poses for press shots?

German site BestBoyZ has delivered a string of HTC leaks in recent weeks, and the latest is a fairly legit-looking handful of alleged press shots of the Mondrian. As a refresher, the Mondrian seems to be one of the many code and commercial names floating around for Windows Phone 7-based devices HTC is looking to ship at or very near to the platform's retail launch, a higher-end unit (possibly equipped with a 1.3GHz Snapdragon) that would probably hang in the same space as the rumored HD7 and Trophy. Interestingly, the shots -- which show a unit with a German ROM -- have HTC Hub listed on the home screen, despite some recent talk by CEO Peter Chou that his company's first-gen WinPho 7 products would lack serious software customization. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing depends on how much you appreciate HTC's design team, we suppose.

HTC Mondrian stars in leaked AT&T ad campaign, jump-kicks lesser smartphones? (video)

Would you believe that after months of leaks, this is the first time we've allegedly seen the HTC Mondrian? It's true -- though from this angle, it's a dead ringer for the Mozart, which looks just like the Shubert, too. The above picture comes from what appear to be a pair of mostly complete ads for AT&T's Windows Phone 7 push, which if real make the Mondrian look like it might be a flagship device. Perhaps those rumors of a 1.3GHz Snapdragon inside weren't too far off. You won't find real phones demonstrated in the videos after the break, but don't let that stop you from clicking through -- you do like watching oblivious folks flying through the air, don't you?

HTC Schubert Windows Phone 7 handset spied again -- or is it the Mozart?

Fleshing out HTC's device codenames can be difficult even after they launch, seeing how the codenames rarely make the leap to retail branding -- and the company certainly isn't making it easy with its alleged first round of Windows Phone 7 gear, either. We're pretty sure this device we're looking at here -- clearly labeled Mozart -- is exactly the same as the Schubert we saw a few days back... physically, anyway, which leaves open the possibility that the radio (or some other aspect of the internals) is different on this one. After all, Microsoft is looking to launch WinPho 7 in a bunch of countries on a bunch of carriers with a bunch of manufacturers on day one, so a couple different tri-band 3G options (for the midrange devices, anyway) would make good sense. Either that, or... you know, one of these codenames is just flat-out wrong.

HTC files seemingly confirm Mondrian, Mozart to be Windows Phone 7 handsets

We'd already had some indication that both the HTC Mondrian and Mozart would be Windows Phone 7 handsets, and it looks like that has now been all but confirmed by HTC itself. According to some XML files dug up on HTC's own site by Conflipper, both devices list Internet Explorer Mobile 7 for the browser ID, which we can only assume won't be making an appearance outside of Windows Phone 7 anytime soon. The files also confirm that each device will have a 800 x 480 display and a keyboard-less form factor, plus A2DP Bluetooth support, although there's expectedly few details to be found beyond that.

1.5 GHz Scorpion and quartet of HTC Windows Phone 7 handsets headed to North America?

Conflipper is a regular in the underworld of HTC ROM cooking. So when he tweets about unreleased devices and their respective carrier support you really outta listen. First up is the HTC Scorpion (aka, Olympian) which he claims is going to Verizon and Bell Mobility -- a device previously rumored to be packing Froyo with WiMax and a 1.5GHz Snapdragon whipped topping. Conflipper also claims to have the inside scoop on a quartet of Windows Phone 7 devices and their respective North American launch partners: the HTC Spark_W (Bell Mobility and Verizon), HTC Gold_W (Sprint), HTC Shubert (Telus), and the HTC Mondrian (Telus, Rogers and AT&T). Note that the "_W" in those handsets signifies a worldphone device with dual-mode CDMA and GSM radios. And in the immortal words of Klaus Meine, "Time, it needs time." So true.

HTC Mondrian with 1.3GHz Snapdragon detailed in leaked Windows Phone 7 ROM?

As expected, the official-looking Windows Phone 7 OS ROM leaked over the weekend is already yielding results. Pictured above is an image extracted from the "oemavatar.cab." Now that could be a generic Windows Phone 7 image or it could be the HTC Mondrian already seen referenced by the 100MB file. The kids at XDA-Developers have also pieced together specs from an ongoing analysis of the registry and RGU files. So far they've spotted references to a 4.3-inch WVGA (480x800) display from Optrex and a 1.3GHz QSD8650A/B Snapdragon from Qualcomm -- a chipset, you might recall, supporting multi-mode UMTS and CDMA 3G connectivity. It's also packing a digital compass but seems to lack a keyboard. Mind you, none of this is absolute but it's very very intriguing.

Leaked Windows Phone 7 ROM filename suggests an HTC Mondrian?

The lads and lassies at XDA-Developers made an intriguing discovery this week: a leaked 100MB file that might be the first Windows Phone 7 ROM actually destined for a device. What's more, it could possibly reveal details about a phone we barely knew existed -- the filename references an "HTC Mondrian." At best, the contents might reveal wonders beyond imagination, including full specs, bundled apps, even the tools needed to properly shoehorn WP7 onto your existing HTC handset. At worst, the community might never open the blasted file, or discover it's all a clever hoax. There's really no indication either way, so we prefer to dream. If you think you've got what it takes, try cracking the ROM yourself (registration required) at our source link.

TiVo invades the hotel room, comes to Mondrian in South Beach

It's about time, no? TiVo has finally cut a deal to get its heralded time-shifting box into hotel rooms, and while the first agreement is relatively small in scope, we can see huge potential for this initiative. The outfit has signed on with Morgans Hotel Group -- which owns the Delano in South Beach, Royalton and Hudson in New York City, and Sanderson in London -- in order to bring TiVo functionality to every guest room in the soon-to-open (December 1st) Mondrian in South Beach (Miami, FL). There are no specifics given as to which model will be installed, but it definitely doesn't mention TiVo HD nor the word "high-definition." Still, we'd take an SD TiVo as part of the stay, but we won't stop wishing there was a way to transfer all of our currently unwatched programs at home to the box in the hotel room. Full release is after the break.

Update: We've received word that the units will be TiVo HD boxes connected to HDTVs. Stellar!
