Just in case you weren't really sure how deep into this 3DTV thing Sony is, senior director of Sony Europe Mick Hocking announced the PS3's update for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/17/ps3s-summer-3d-firmware-is-all-fun-and-games-and-no-blu-ray/">Blu-ray 3D movie playback</a> will be released in September -- but it won't stop there. Expect future firmware upgrades that give the PS3 3D rendering for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/08/sonys-latest-cyber-shots-boast-3d-sweep-panorama-background-de/">photos</a> (.mpo files), any broadcasts it can pick up on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/playtv">PlayTV</a>, and even <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/22/youtube-enters-the-cavernous-chromatic-world-of-3d/">YouTube</a> videos. Not running out the door to buy one yet? <i>CVG</i> reports the rest of the presentation was devoted to extolling the virtues of 3D to hardcore gamers in racing games, <i>God of War</i>, or <i>LittleBigPlanet</i>. Demos so far <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/playstation-3-in-3d-impressions-almost-but-not-quite/">haven't completely convinced us</a> the PS3 is capable of rendering games in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/09/toy-story-3-in-4k-3d-does-higher-res-equal-higher-enjoyment/">high enough resolution</a> to satisfy, but if <i>Fat Princess 2 </i>features a good 3D implementation, someone hide our credit cards, please.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/09/playstation-blu-ray-3d-update-arrives-in-september-3d-photo-pl/">PlayStation Blu-ray 3D update arrives in September; 3D photo, PlayTV and YouTube support to follow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 09 Jul 2010 16:26:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Sure, it's only one word in a long and involved interview, but according to Sony Cambridge Studio's Mark Green (who's been talking shop with <em>Spong</em>) it seems that a little something called PlayTV2 is in the works. "We're still working on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PlayTV/">PlayTV</a>, PlayTV 2," he says, while the shop has "other guys working on other concepts." And while that's all well and good, but is there any chance that the digital tuner / DVR for PS3 might make it to the states some time soon? To be honest, we're beginning to lose interest.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/01/is-sony-developing-playtv2-and-will-we-get-to-play-in-the-state/">Is Sony developing PlayTV2? Japan hasn't had a lot of time to get used to the PlayStation 3's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/torne/">Torne</a> digital TV tuner since it launched in March, but it's already getting an update which will add a few more DVR features to improve the experience. Coming in June, v2.00 will enable MPEG-4 AVC compression to squeeze HDTV recordings by as much as 3x their original size as opposed to just copying the original MPEG-2 stream even while playing a game, plus the ability to start watching a program and fast forward/reverse while it's still recording and update the user's PSN status. The free update will be issued in June, until then Torne fans can argue with European and Australian <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/playtv">PlayTV</a> owners about whether or not their new features are better than <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/15/sony-playtv-getting-facebook-still-no-love-for-stateside-ps3-ow/">Facebook integration</a> while the U.S. sits out like the ginger kid of a previous marriage it is.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/22/more-details-on-sonys-new-playtv/">Sony PlayTV</a>, the digital TV tuner / DVR for PS3 that is still painfully unavailable in the United States, is getting "great new features," according to the PlayStation Blog. What does that mean for you? Well, if you're in England (as well as the rest of the UK, wiseguy), Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, or the UAE, it means <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/facebook">Facebook</a> integration! What else does it mean? "Other great enhancements," the likes of which the company refuses to divulge at this point. That said, it looks like we'll know "later this year," at least according to James Thorpe, PlayStation Network Product Manager. We'll keep you posted.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/15/sony-playtv-getting-facebook-still-no-love-for-stateside-ps3-ow/">Sony PlayTV getting Facebook, still no love for stateside PS3 owners</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 15 Apr 2010 10:46:00 EST. We've just about gotten our head around game consoles being HD video delivery boxes, whether its downloads from the Xbox Live Video (or should we call it <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/26/zune-hd-is-official-heading-your-way-this-fall/">Zune</a>) <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/xblm">Marketplace</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/psn">PSN</a>, or Blu-ray discs slipping into our IR receiver-less PlayStation 3, but is anyone really ready to make the jump to watching live HDTV through a console? That's not <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/24/sony-playtv-already-working-a-little-in-new-zealand/">necessarily</a> possible yet even through the current <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/playtv">PlayTV</a> implementation in the UK or the yet to launch <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/29/live-sky-tv-coming-to-xbox-360-in-uk-and-ireland-hooligan-avata/">BSkyB / Xbox 360 tie-up</a>, but one has to wonder if the desire for such products is out there, so we're putting the question to you.<br /><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/30/poll-do-you-actually-want-to-watch-tv-via-your-game-console/#poll30645">View Poll</a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/polls/" rel="tag">Polls</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/other-hardware/" rel="tag">Other hardware</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/set-top-boxes/" rel="tag">Set-top boxes</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/30/poll-do-you-actually-want-to-watch-tv-via-your-game-console/">Poll: Do you actually want to watch TV via your game console?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 30 May 2009 12:00:00 EST. Very, or so it would seem, one reader wrote in to let us know the UK PlayTV unit he brought down to NZ in '08 has, since the 2.10 firmware update, put its DVB-T compatibility to work and started picking up some broadcasts. So far he's able to catch <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tv3">TV3</a> in 1080i and AC3 surround and even pause and buffer video, but no program scheduling support. On the other 7 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Freeview/">Freeview</a> channels? Video, but no audio so far. Sony hasn't documented any New Zealand compatibility in its upgrades, but at least judging by one users experience everything is being "worked in" in good time.<br /><br />[Thanks, Jim]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/receivers/" rel="tag">Receivers</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/ota/" rel="tag">OTA</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/24/sony-playtv-already-working-a-little-in-new-zealand/">Sony PlayTV already working (a little) in New Zealand</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 24 Apr 2009 01:32:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/playtv">PlayTV</a> add-on for PlayStation 3 may be delayed in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/03/playtvs-nz-debut-delayed-to-add-freeview-hd-support/">Auckland</a>, but if it's already grabbing OTA TV for your system the latest software update brings some much needed new features to the table. Among the new additions, upscaling should bring a sharper picture to HDTVs everywhere, and a new XMB option that takes you direct to TV watching should streamline things appreciably. Hit up Joystiq for a quick video explaining all the changes or better yet, get that PS3 online and grab the update.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/other-hardware/" rel="tag">Other hardware</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/receivers/" rel="tag">Receivers</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/ota/" rel="tag">OTA</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/06/playtv-upgraded-with-upscaling-more-dvr-features/">PlayTV upgraded with upscaling, more DVR features</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 06 Apr 2009 13:32:00 EST. Bret? Present. Jemaine? Present. Murray? Present. PlayTV? ... Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/playtv">PlayTV</a> DVR add-on for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ps3">PlayStation 3</a> suffered through more than one delay before going on sale in Europe, and it appears thing will be no different in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/newzealand">New Zealand</a>, but at least with good reason - they're getting HD working this time. As it stands, the original version's dual HD <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/01/18/digital-television-part-ii-global-status/">DVB-T</a> tuners are pretty useless since there aren't any Freeview stations broadcasting in that format in the UK and FreeSat HD support is still up in the air. David Hine from Sony revealed on the <em>ButtonMasher </em>podcast that a push back 'til the end of the year is related to the spread of high definition on the island, so that they can "work in" HD support before it launches, unleashing Remote Play and XMB powered HDTV watching upon the populace so they can catch season two of <em>Flight of the Conchords</em> as it was meant to be seen.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/dvrs/" rel="tag">DVRs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/other-hardware/" rel="tag">Other hardware</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/set-top-boxes/" rel="tag">Set-top boxes</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/ota/" rel="tag">OTA</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/03/playtvs-nz-debut-delayed-to-add-freeview-hd-support/">PlayTV's NZ debut purportedly delayed to add Freeview HD support</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 03 Apr 2009 10:43:00 EST. It's black, it plays nice with your PS3 and it enables owners in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/01/18/digital-television-part-ii-global-status/">DVB-T</a> territories to watch live TV via their PlayStation 3. Yep, it's Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PlayTv/">PlayTV</a>, and it has recently been reviewed on video by <em>Stuff</em>'s Ruth Owen. We'd go into elaborate detail about exactly what she thinks, but then you might be discouraged from actually clicking through and hearing her most delightful accent. So we won't.<br /><br />[Thanks, JimB]<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/22/sonys-playtv-dvr-for-playstation-3-reviewed-on-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony's PlayTV DVR for PlayStation 3 reviewed on video</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/reviews/" rel="tag">Reviews</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/set-top-boxes/" rel="tag">Set-top boxes</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/tuners/" rel="tag">Tuners</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/22/sonys-playtv-dvr-for-playstation-3-reviewed-on-video/">Sony's PlayTV DVR for PlayStation 3 reviewed on video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 22 Aug 2008 15:16:00 EST. Er, you know that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/18/sonys-playtv-begins-european-rollout-september-10th-in-uk/">September 10th, &euro;99</a> (about &pound;78) PlayTV launch announced by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/david%20reeves">David Reeves</a>? Well, turns out that the Sony Europe president jumped the gun or the product's been dragged through a trough of delay. Whatever the case, Sony Europe told Eurogamer that the PS3 TV tuner / DVR add-on will launch on the 19th of September now and cost a bit less at just 70 Quid. It's also said to be HD ready should local DVB-T broadcasters decide to throw that switch. <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/08/12/playtv-coming-september-29th-reasonably-priced/">PS3 Fanboy</a>, thanks Jimb]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/dvrs/" rel="tag">DVRs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/tuners/" rel="tag">Tuners</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/13/sonys-playtv-dvr-for-ps3-delayed-to-september-19th/">Sony's PlayTV DVR for PS3 delayed to September 19th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 13 Aug 2008 08:03:00 EST. For those of you lucky, lucky folks in Europe (or the UK, more specifically), it looks like your wait for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PlayTV/">PlayTV</a> rollout is coming to a close. According to Amazon's British wing, you can now pre-order the PlayStation 3 add-on for &pound;59.99 ($120) with an expected release on July 31st. Over here we'll just continue to twiddle our thumbs, watch paint dry, and check out our Blu-ray version of <em>The Song Remains the Same</em>... again<br /><br />[Thanks, Mighty Zoltar]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/20/sonys-playtv-set-for-july-release-uk-pre-order-now-available/">Sony's PlayTV set for July release, UK pre-order now available</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 20 Apr 2008 22:07:00 EST. <div align="left">Sony's been relatively mum on its Slingbox-like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/playtv">PlayTV</a> add-on for the PlayStation 3 since it announced it last fall, but it's now finally starting to show it off for all to see and, thanks to the BBC's dot.life blog, we now have a pretty good idea of what European PS3 users can expect. As you can see in the video after the break, the PlayTV software appears to be straightforward enough, and includes the usual program guide, and options to pause and rewind live <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/freeview">Freeview</a> TV, as well as the ability to record one channel while watching another (thanks to the dual tuners in the device itself). Also on display is the PlayTV's ability to work with your PlayStation Portable via Remote Play, which'll let you watch live TV (or recorded programming) from anywhere with a WiFi connection. One of the few things it can't do, it seems, is record programming in the background while you're playing a game, although the developers are apparently "working hard" to add that feature. Still no word on a price or exact release date though, so you have a bit longer to be spared the inevitable bragging from your European friends.<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]</div>

Sony is running a new video trumpeting its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/01/ps3-to-receive-tuner-dvr-capabilities-before-march-2008/">forthcoming</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PlayTV/">PlayTV</a> service. No new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/22/more-details-on-sonys-new-playtv/">details</a>, but it is showing off some (hopefully) real functionality. Hook your DVB-T antenna to the PlayTV box and make a USB connection to the PS3 to unlock basic dual-tuner DVR functionality. From the video, the UI for the EPG and time-shifting look nice enough, and we like the video thumbnails used for viewing the library of recorded shows. Interestingly, no mention of copying content to a PSP is made, but the video does tout the "Remote Play" feature that place shifts live and recorded content on the PS3 to your WiFi-connected PSP. Two questions, Sony: when is this coming stateside (ATSC, please), and how much coinage?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/35692/118/">TGDaily</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/dvrs/" rel="tag">DVRs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/ota/" rel="tag">OTA</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/22/sony-showing-ps3-playtv-promo-video/">Sony showing PS3 PlayTV promo video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 22 Jan 2008 08:51:00 EST. The info is flying fast today as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Sony/">Sony</a>'s launches a multi-tiered attack on the entertainment community. Luckily, we've got some additional info on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/22/sonys-playtv-turns-your-ps3-into-tv-tuner-dvr-plus-voip-on-p/">just announced</a> PlayTV TV tuner / DVR for the PS3, and we'd like to share it. The unit will apparently be coming to Europe "early in 2008" with other territories to follow (PAL only for now). The new box will feature two 1080p tuners, which utilize the European Digital Video Broadcasting system (DVB-T) -- which should dash any US hopes for the time being. The system will allow you to store recorded broadcasts on your PS3 drive, and also transcode and transfer the saved files to your PSP. Additionally, you'll be able to use the PSP's "Remote Play" feature to program <em>and watch</em> your PlayTV away from home. Sony reps also make the bold pronouncement that the PlayTV architecture will "never be out of date" due to automatic network updates from the company. We're gutted that the US gets no love from Sony on this one, but it's a good time to be a European PlayStation 3 fan, that's for sure.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/22/more-details-on-sonys-new-playtv/">More details on Sony's new PlayTV</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 22 Aug 2007 14:21:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PS3/">PS3</a> rumor mill is working overtime today, delivering not one, not two, but three whoppers that should have fans and foes alike feeling alive with pleasure. The first top-secret super-rumor comes direct from the BBC, a small, but fairly trustworthy news organization, who is reporting that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Sony/">Sony</a>'s game box will be getting a digital TV tuner (at least in the UK) which allows you to record your favorite shows &agrave; la TiVo, called PlayTV, which will also let you transfer those shows onto your PSP. Of course, this news was announced by Sony at their not-so-secret Leipzig Game Convention keynote, so you can probably bank on this one. Additionally, Sony has partnered with Britain's BT Group to bring video and voice telephony to the PSP via the Go!Messenger software, which is set to launch in January of 2008. In other, less official PS3 news, word on the street is that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DualShock3/">DualShock 3</a> -- not the infamous <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/SIXAXIS/">SIXAXIS</a> -- will be compatible with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, at least based on a second-hand report from the Japanese game magazine Dengeki PlayStation. The report has fueled suspicion that the new controller pictured in silhouette in recent GT5 ads is actually the DualShock 3, and that the controller will be made available coupled with a GT5 demo. We'll have to wait and see on this one, so try and stay tuned.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/22/scee-announces-playtv-for-ps3-watch-record-and-replay-tv-show/">Read</a> -- LGC07: SCEE announces PlayTV for PS3, "watch, record and replay TV shows"<br /><a href="http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070822/tc_nm/bt_sony_dc">Read</a> -- BT, Sony unveil PlayStation with video calling<br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/22/dualshock-3-rumbles-with-gt5-prologue-japanese-gaming-mag-claim/">Read</a> -- DualShock 3 rumbles with GT5 Prologue, Japanese gaming mag claims<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gadgets/" rel="tag">Misc.
