With the iPhone now available in 100 countries on 230 carriers and the new iPad shipping in over 40 countries, the continued growth isn't much of a surprise. Obviously, as the number of devices in the hands of users increases, so does the number of apps, and in this quarter the iTunes app store topped 600,000 apps -- including over 200,000 specifically designed for the iPad. The iPad in particular was singled out as being a driver for growth. Tim Cook said that 67 million iPads have been sold since the first model debuted. By contrast, he claims it took 24 years to sell that many Macs. Oppenheimer said that the education market was increasingly turning to the tablet, purchasing them by a margin of almost two-to-one over Macs. The San Diego school district in particular ordered 10,000 this quarter and has plans to purchase 15,000 more. Even the government is getting in on the action, with the air force using them as flight guides. In one announcement, AT&T has nearly doubled its LTE coverage by officially flipping the switch on eleven new markets. The list of cities includes New York City metro, San Francisco / Oakland / San Jose, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego, Raleigh and Austin. We've seen the service flicker on and off in most of these cities as real-life tests were conducted, and the high-speed connection's also been available in certain parts of New York, but it's great to see these become official. AT&T also declared that LTE expansion should be complete by the end of 2013, though we expect most major cities to be hit far earlier. Check out the full press release for more details.

Continue reading AT&T expands LTE coverage to eleven new markets, including NYC, San Francisco and Los Angeles

AT&T expands LTE coverage to eleven new markets, including NYC, San Francisco and Los Angeles originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 05 Jan 2012 11:52:00 EST. And that's all she wrote, folks -- warm and sunny San Diego was a wonderful host for this year's CTIA Enterprise & Applications, but now it's time to head on home. The show was tremendously affected by the news of Samsung canceling its much-anticipated Nexus event, but there were still a few gems we were able to grab. AT&T got the show started off right by announcing a grand total of five new smartphones, not the least of which was the Motorola Atrix 2 (no "4G" in the title, interestingly enough). T-Mobile also unveiled the Springboard, a 7-inch tablet that's sure to make a splash. So if you're finally catching up with the week's gadget news, we've compiled a list that'll make your reading much more convenient. Here's our full CTIA coverage in all its glory.

What do you get when you mix together a lack of sleep, a desk full of candy and two of our mobile editors at a trade show? Late night shenanigans in San Diego, that's what -- Myriam and Brad are up to no good while attending CTIA Enterprise & Applications 2011, and they're ready to tell you all about their wild and crazy adventures while in the midst of a convention center (some crazy stuff goes down in those places, believe us). We'll also tell you exactly what didn't happen at this week's show, and offer up a double dosage of ranting. That's right, Myriam and Brad are in the same room, opining from the exact same mic. Should be a great way to spend the wee hours of the morning, eh? Tune in at 12AM ET (9PM PT) for this week's special California Nights edition of the Engadget Mobile Podcast!
We're gathering at the San Diego Convention Center to attend the fall edition of CTIA Wireless, also known as CTIA Wireless Enterprise & Applications 2011. Sure, the name's a mouthful, but we can't wait to check out the show floor and get a handful of the latest and greatest gadgets. The biggest news so far is what won't be shown off at this week's event, but we're certain this shindig's got plenty more to take our attention away from good ol' Nexus whats-his-face. So be sure to follow Engadget's CTIA 2011 tag to get all the action!
We're live from CTIA Enterprise & Applications 2011! originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 10 Oct 2011 18:02:00 EST. When we tried out car2go's carsharing program earlier this year, we knew it was only a matter of time before the service rolled out to other parts of the country. Little did we know, however, that it would be doing so atop a flotilla of EVs. Yesterday, the Daimler subsidiary announced that San Diego will be the next city to adopt car2go, making it the first in North America to boast a completely electric carsharing system. The program will kick off sometime before the end of this year, when 300 Smart Fortwo plug-ins storm the city, each powered by a 30 kW electric propulsion system and a lithium ion battery that promises to last for up to 84 miles on a single charge. We've seen what other companies have in store for our automotive future, and now Audi's given us a glimpse of what we can expect from its car of tomorrow. The company's Silicon Valley research lab has teamed up with four universities here in the US to develop technologies that will give city drivers the full KITT treatment -- vehicles that recognize the driver (and his or her preferences) and can detect and avoid dangers and traffic delays. Called the Audi Urban Intelligence Assist initiative, each participating university has a specific area of urban mobility research ranging from urban crash analysis to aggregating historical and real-time traffic, parking, and pedestrian data in cities. The schools will also study how best to deliver relevant information to drivers and get them from point A to point B as easily and efficiently as possible. Looks like the groundwork is being laid for a German counterpart to GM's EN-V we test drove in Vegas, and we look forward to the fruits of their labor. Ich bin ein Ingolstädter!
Audi commissions four US universities to research urban mobility issues originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Jan 2011 18:24:00 EST. T-Mobile USA isn't backing down with its somewhat controversial "4G speeds" rhetoric for its rapidly-growing HSPA+ network -- and when you consider that real-world performance on it can meet or exceed what Clear and Sprint will get you in some markets on WiMAX, we can't say we blame them. Next to enjoy the 4G-esque experience from the nation's number four carrier are a few major markets -- Boston, San Diego, and Miami -- along with Erie, Pennsylvania, Fresno, Palm Springs, Richmond, Spokane, and Topeka. Though the G2 is lining up to be the carrier's first true HSPA+ smartphone, T-Mobile's quick to remind everyone that the upgrades also mean that over 15 current devices in its lineup will see some benefits as well; not "4G speeds," of course, but better than the HSPA they'd had before. See T-Mobile's full statement after the break.
Continue reading T-Mobile adds Boston, San Diego, Miami, others to HSPA+ live list

T-Mobile adds Boston, San Diego, Miami, others to HSPA+ live list originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 31 Aug 2010 16:54:00 EST.
Cornell sure seems to be doing its part to usher in a world where robots call the shots and humans spend most of their time cowering in the corners of bomb-out buildings. Researchers at the school have variously applied their brain matter (and we're guessing the occasional government check) to such sticky problems as robot consciousness, distance walking, and complications related to using robotics in zero gravity. And now we've heard that the school has just won something called the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition. The vehicles entered in the 12th annual AUVC (which was held at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center in San Diego) ran an underwater obstacle course that involved bombing things, firing torpedoes, and eventually recovering a suitcase with "secret documents" (or old issues of 2600: The Hacker Quarterly, depending on who you believe). You can see the thing in action for yourself in the video after the break.

[Via GoRobotics.net]

Cox may have upset some San Diego residents by acting all proud of those 19 new HD VOD slots, but it's backing things up with five linear stations that are sure to juice up that holiday spirit. Starting on December 29th (far off, we know), subscribers in the region will find FOX News HD (737), FX HD (743), SPEED HD (756), Cartoon Network HD (750) and E! HD (749) in the program guide. If, for whatever reason, you're simply unsatisfied with those additions, Cox is promising that "more HD channels will be added soon." Good luck deciphering its definition of "soon."

[Thanks, Gary]

Cox bringing 5 new HD stations to San Diego, California originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 13 Dec 2008 01:58:00 EST. Hate to get you all riled up for nothing, San Diego, but Cox is dropping a whopping 19 new high-def channels in your area. Too bad every last one of them is simply an HD On Demand channel. The carrier is now touting that locals have 67 HD channels to flip through, which is factual per se, but hardly indicative of the actual situation. Ah well, VOD is better than zilch, we suppose.

Cox brings 19 HD VOD channels to San Diego, California originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 27 Nov 2008 14:23:00 EST. The proud men and women of the United States Navy have to get their HD fix somehow, right? Being that the answer to that is undoubtedly "yes," we're happy to see that Cox Communications has signed on to provide HD programming, high-speed internet and digital phone services to the Pacific Beacon residences at the US Naval Base in San Diego, California. Currently, services are being installed in 512 units at Palmer Hall, while all of the buildings in the complex should be complete (and completely wired) by March 1st of next year.

Cox provides HD programming, internet at US Naval Base in San Diego originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 26 Nov 2008 03:01:00 EST. After dropping two in late October and promising to get 10 to 15 newcomers on the air over the next little while, TWC has just pushed out two more to keep locals appeased. Effective immediately, subscribers in San Diego can find Hallmark Movie Channel HD and Big Ten Network HD, but there's no indication of when the others will follow suit. Like it or not California, it's about time you folks ponied up for a serious rail system. With the recent passage of Proposition 1A, the wheels have started to churn on a sophisticated bullet train system that will eventually link San Diego in the south with Sacramento in the north, with stops at most every major city in between (LA and San Francisco included). The 800-mile network of trains would operate at upwards of 220mph and cost around $45 billion to construct, but it'll create 320,000 permanent jobs by 2030 and reduce the state's reliance on fossil fuel by 12.7 million barrels of oil per year. Unfortunately, there's no set time frame for completion just yet, but we wouldn't be surprised to see this one finished before that Anaheim - Las Vegas maglev project even gets off the ground.

[Via BoingBoing]

California high-speed train system to link NorCal and SoCal at 220mph originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 08 Nov 2008 16:37:00 EST. After receiving two new ones in September, the firm has added in two others as it attempts to include 10 to 15 more over the next short while. Finally, the carrier is stepping up and doing a little something to keep things competitive by offering up a fresh half dozen HD channels in the California city. Beginning on October 15th, Cox will deliver MTV HD (730), Spike HD (745), VH1 HD (746), Nickelodeon HD (747), CMT HD (761) and Planet Green HD (783), while Palladia HD will be relocated to slot 732. We've a feeling we'll soon be unable to keep up with all the Total Home DVR rollouts, but we aren't complaining one bit about the speed at which AT&T is getting it out there. Beginning in September, the local ABC affiliate (KGTV) will begin airing its local newscasts in high-definition, and for those impatient souls, the local FOX affiliate (KSWB-TV) will be making the same switch on August 1st. Furthermore, KUSI-TV Channel 51 is expecting to take "everything on the channel, including local news broadcasts," to the high-def realm starting in February of next year. Seems like a few other cities could learn something from this one.

[Thanks, Tony]

San Diego FOX / ABC affiliates taking local news high-def originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 11 Jul 2008 07:45:00 EST. Just weeks after AT&T announced an expansion of its U-verse service in sunny San Diego, along comes Time Warner Cable to keep things marginally competitive. According to a local, the cable company is sending out informational cards which inform users of an impending switched digital video (SDV) rollout, and while it does mention that tuning adapters may be offered for free to TiVo owners, we suspect we'll have to wait and hear about all the details. As for new high-definition channels, you can look forward to seeing Universal HD, MOJO HD, HDNet, HDNet Movies and NBA TV HD, all of which should go live on July 28th. Nary a month after AT&T celebrated the one-year anniversary of U-verse in Los Angeles, the operator is sparking the party back up with a similar celebration for San Diego. Since launching in June of 2007, AT&T has delivered access of its fiber-based TV / internet service to over 250,000 domiciles in the Greater San Diego area. Granted, it didn't say how many actually took advantage and signed up, but it's still maintaining that it will have one million subscribers before 2009 dawns. As of April 8th, TWC subscribers in and around San Diego, California should have access to Discovery HD (743), Animal Planet HD (764), TLC HD (755), HGTV HD (753), Food Network HD (751) and CNN HD (726). According to Marc Farrar, vice president of public affairs for the carrier's San Diego division, the company is "poised to add even more HD channels to the lineup this year," though no specifics were doled out beyond that. When it rains, it pours -- 2008 is shaping up to be the year that spring fever is accompanied by HD fever. Take a peep at the linked Padres TV schedule for San Diego's channel 4 and what do you see in the right-most column? That's right -- every game carried (a whopping 144) is in HD, right down the line. It's nice to see that Jays fans north of the border won't be able to hold that number over us Americans. We're compelled to tell you that if you can get out to PETCO park, please do -- it's a great place to take in some baseball. Otherwise, break out the cooler, fire up the grill, invite some friends over and bask in the overabundance of HD pixels.

[Thanks, Andy!]

San Diego's channel 4 treats Padres fans to HD originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 24 Mar 2008 12:57:00 EST. As part of the HIPerSpace visualization system, engineers at the University of California, San Diego "have constructed the highest-resolution computer display in the world, with a screen resolution of up to 220 million pixels." The system, which links between UCSD and UC-Irvine (responsible for the mighty HiPerWall) via dedicated optical networking, contains a "graphics super cluster" that relies on 80 NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 GPUs. Reportedly, scientists dealing with large-scale applications involving "Earth sciences, climate prediction, biomedical engineering, genomics, and brain imaging" will be able to make use of the newfangled setup in order to better digest the information they're dealing with. Sheesh, all we want is a solid day with this thing, infinite Doritos, and Halo 3.

[Via MedGadget]
HIPerSpace visualization system takes the crown with 220 million pixels originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Aug 2007 10:22:00 EST. Nevertheless, the company has announced that customers in San Diego can now access "more than 20 high-definition titles" via the HD Movies on Demand channel, and the library of HD flicks should hopefully grow as time goes on. On deck to receive the HD VOD luxuries are Northern Virginia and Oklahoma City, with other unnamed markets to get tapped "later this summer." So, for those San Diegans looking for a good HD movie to soak in on Independence Day, why not give Cox's latest offering a whirl and tell us how it goes?

Cox initiates HD VOD rollouts with HD Movies on Demand originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 04 Jul 2007 03:08:00 EST. While the Virtual Hallucinating goggles and Brain Machine can certainly give you a taste of the erratic, a new behavioral-pattern monitor at the University of California, San Diego will reportedly be used to "study the behavior of patients with mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia." The LifeShirt, "a computerized vest that continuously monitors the patient's movements," sports integrated sensors to monitor hyperactive and repetitive movements and record data on "respiration, heart rate, and other physiological measures." Notably, the padded room wearers are presumably crammed into sports a ceiling-mounted webcam that films their exploratory behavior in order to better analyze movement patterns associated with certain disorders. Eventually, of course, researchers are hoping that data collected from the sensor-laden straight jacket could be used to create new drugs to help combat the behavioral abnormalities, but for all of our sakes, let's hope this thing doesn't fall into the wrong hands.

[Via MedGadget, photo courtesy of TechnologyReview]
Filed under: Misc. Phone-oriented flagship retail locations seem to be all the rage these days, but who would've thought MVNOs would be getting into the action? MySpace-friendly Helio looks to gain some additional visibility when it opens its first of five dedicated stores in Santa Monica this October. If the renderings hold true, we have to admit the place looks pretty nifty -- just add some hot new devices to match the decor and Helio may have a winner on their hands. Additional facilities will be opening in New York, Denver, San Diego, and Palo Alto through late '06 and early '07. Any love for the midwest, guys?

Helio to open flagship store in Santa Monica originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 12 Aug 2006 14:09:00 EST. At a seminar called PSP University (man, we sure wish we could have spent our college years at that institution), company execs confirmed that the portable console will indeed work as a remote for the PS3, and that the upcoming firmware update will support RSS video feeds for the built-in web browser. Furthermore, Sony is apparently in talks with wireless providers to provide more Nintendo DS / Wayport-like hotspots for online gaming, and is also looking at ways to bring downloadable movies to PSP owners -- which sounds to us like another foot in the grave for the almost-dead UMD. Not all the news here is good, however, as those folks expecting a Sony-branded keyboard for their console will likely be in for a disappointment; in fact, the company has no plans whatsoever to improve text entry on the PSP at all. Other new info centered around games and demos, and since that's not really our bag, we'll leave those details to other fine publications like Joystiq and PSP Fanboy.

[Via PSP Fanboy]

Future PSP plans revealed at Comic Con originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 23 Jul 2006 21:45:00 EST. Sony is closing a 30year old CRT plant in light of sagging sales. Sony still plans on employing 2,000 people at their headquarters, also located in San Diego, but 400 people will lose their jobs that work in the factory. This is the second US plantthat Sony is going to close. In October, they announced that they were going to close their CRT plant near Pittsburgh,Penn. eliminating 275 jobs.

Sony closing tube plant in San Diego originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 23 Jan 2006 08:05:00 EST.
