As <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/06/samsungs-3d-capable-pn42a450p-plasma-display-hitting-the-states/">gimmicky</a> as 3D typically is, we've seen just how <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/01/hd-cameras-helped-make-u2-3d-what-it-is/">impressive</a> it can be when <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/10/christie-delivers-3d-cinema-with-dual-projector-3d2p-system/">done right</a>. Apparently, DreamWorks Animation thinks it can convince viewers to pay a premium for a three-dimensional product, as its Chief Executive Jeffrey Katzenberg announced that all of the studio's future films -- starting with next year's <em>Monsters vs. Aliens</em> -- will be "made in 3D." Reportedly, adding 3D to each film will require an extra $15 million <em>per production</em>, but after the stunning success of Disney's <em>Hannah Montana / Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour</em>, it reckons the investment is a smart one. As it stands, only 1,200 or so theaters worldwide are capable of 3D exhibition, but Katzenberg is hoping that some 3,000 to 5,000 would be equipped once <em>Monsters</em> emerged.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.widescreenreview.com/news_current.php">WidescreenReview</a>, image courtesy of <a href="http://www.worstpreviews.com/images/monstersvsaliens.jpg">WorstPreviews</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/other-formats/" rel="tag">Other formats</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/14/all-future-dreamworks-animation-movies-to-be-made-in-3d/">All future DreamWorks Animation movies to be made in 3D</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 14 Mar 2008 19:45:00 EST. Electrosonic's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/09/electrosonic-showcases-ms9600-2k-digital-cinema-player/">MS9600</a> isn't the only thing flying out of ShoWest this week -- oh no, we've also learned that Texas Instruments will have quite a bit to do with forthcoming IMAX deployments. Apparently, the aforementioned outfit has inked a deal that will land its DLP Cinema projectors in "each IMAX Digital projection system to be deployed to commercial exhibitors around the world from mid-2008." Unfortunately, all the gory details we crave were left out -- starting with a list of cities in which to expect these DLP-powered venues -- but thankfully, the release did manage to spare the whole "it's the mirrors" tagline when getting the point across.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.aboutprojectors.com/news/2008/03/12/imax-corp-switches-to-dlp-technology/">AboutProjectors</a>, image courtesy of <a href="http://www.pathe-imax.nl/gfx_content/pers/fotos/highres/imaxIMAX.jpg">Pathe-IMAX</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/dlp/" rel="tag">DLP</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/projector/" rel="tag">Projector</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/13/future-imax-deployments-to-utilize-dlp-cinema-projectors/">Future IMAX deployments to utilize DLP Cinema projectors</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 13 Mar 2008 10:54:00 EST.
