At this year's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Cable+Show/">Cable Show</a>, he said that he supported the sort of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/13/atandt-will-cap-dsl-u-verse-internet-and-impose-overage-fees/">usage caps</a> that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/17/comcast-rethinks-bandwidth-caps-trials-two-new-policies-that-in/">Comcast</a> adopted last week and hoped that such plans would reduce costs for those who use less internet. Comcast's new pricing structure offers a 300GB monthly cap, after which point it'll charge users $10 for every extra 50GB used. We're not sure how this'll play out, but we suspect anyone with a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/16/netflix-web-player-updated/">Netflix</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/22/hulu-summer-series-ios-app-update/">Hulu</a> addiction might feel less than pleased this morning.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/24/julius-genachowski-capped-broadband/">Julius Genachowski voices support for capped, tiered broadband</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 24 May 2012 05:21:00 EST. In case you've forgotten, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/20/comcasts-next-generation-xfinity-spectrum-dvr-shows-off-quad-tu/">quad-tuner</a> X1 DVRs have an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/16/comcast-cable-show-2011-demo-features-1gbps-cable-modem/">all new UI </a>with support for third party apps and social media tie-ins, and will reportedly precede the company's eventual push towards <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/25/comcast-will-start-testing-an-iptv-service-at-mit-new-xcalibur/">IP video</a>. While that's the rumor, what we do know is that TiVo has completed the rollout of Comcast video on-demand support to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/10/tivo-comcast-vod-launch-bay-area/">Premiere DVRs in the Bay Area</a>, and also let us know that Boston, coincidentally, will be next. In an early preview of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tivo">TiVo's</a> plans for The Cable Show this week in Chicago, <i>TMCNet </i>has posted information on two new set-top boxes that will be offered by cable operators RCN and Suddenlink. As suggested by recent <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/14/tivo-survey-hints-at-multiroom-companion-box-four-tuner-dvr-in/">surveys</a> and forum <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2011/05/19/rcn-exec-confirms-tivo-premiere-multiroom-streaming-in-latest-up/">posts</a>, the Premiere Q is a quad-tuner DVR with multiroom streaming of up to three HD feeds via MoCA or Ethernet, while the Preview is TiVo's first box without a hard drive and serves as a client to the main box. Another revelation is news that an updated version of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/18/tivo-premiere-app-for-ipad-review/">TiVo's iPad app</a> will include be able to browse <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/09/comcast-will-open-up-its-video-on-demand-to-tivo-premiere-dvrs-a/">cable VOD</a>, allowing users to select it on the tablet and then "flick" it to their box where it starts playing. If the information holds up the new hardware seems competitive and modern enough, but we're wondering if TiVo will continue to serve end users who prefer to buy equipment instead of lease and are waiting for things like the new <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2011/05/12/directivo-surfaces-briefly-on-directv-com-is-it-almost-here/">DirecTiVo</a> or software updates that enhance performance on the Premiere and finish off its HD menu system.<br />

The space and weight requirements to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/13/cablelabs-officially-defines-tru2way-set-back-box/">fit a tru2way cable box behind an LCD or plasma HDTV</a> would seem to rule out DVR functions, but ADB showed off a second generation <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/11/hands-on-with-pansonics-tru2way-set-back-box/">set-back box</a> that does just that. Dubbed Phantom, it can hold an SDHC card with programs either recorded elsewhere, or it can record directly to the card itself. Light Reading mentions there's also MoCA support to stream from standard DVRs, so while it's unlikely you'd have a memory card big enough to hold all the HDTV programs we watch, whether you're old school sneakernetting or going multiroom it can be your hidden HD DVR. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/20/adb-shows-off-tru2way-stb-to-msos/">ADB-4820C</a> it designed for Sony HDTVs that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/19/the-state-of-tru2way-according-to-ces/">we saw at CES 2009</a> never appeared, but the company said at The Cable Show the Phantom could be available by late this year or early 2011, with potential targets in the hotel industry or direct retail sales.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/19/adb-set-back-box-squeezes-a-dvr-on-sdhc-card-behind-your-hdtv/">ADB set-back box squeezes a DVR on SDHC card behind your HDTV</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 19 May 2010 13:26:00 EST. Panasonic always goes all out for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TheCableShow/">The Cable Show</a>, more so than most of the big consumer electronics companies and this year is no different. Obviously there were a few <a href="http://www.engadget.com/topic/3d-hdtv">3DTVs</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tru2way/">tru2way</a> set-top boxes for service providers, but what's new is its JavaScript based Remote User Interface (RUI) technology called AJAX-CE (Asynchronous JavaScript + XML CE). Now we're big fans of remote user interfaces and the promises they bring, but with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dlna">DLNA</a> having one protocol, the RVU Alliance having another, we wonder if anyone really needs a third. Panasonic is hoping that service providers choose theirs, but with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/08/comcast-time-warner-and-cox-are-excited-about-the-latest-in-dln/">most cable operators raving about DLNA's</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/19/directv-cisco-and-samsung-have-whole-house-dvr-plans-with-rvu-a/">DirecTV</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/06/the-rvu-alliance-picks-up-verizon-as-a-founding-promotor/">FiOS showing lots of love for RVU</a>, we're not sure who's left looking. Full release after the jump.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/12/panasonic-shows-its-stuff-at-the-cable-show-including-a-remote-u/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Panasonic shows its stuff at The Cable Show including a remote user interface</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/12/panasonic-shows-its-stuff-at-the-cable-show-including-a-remote-u/">Panasonic shows its stuff at The Cable Show including a remote user interface</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 12 May 2010 20:42:00 EST. Comcast CEO Brian Roberts just hit the stage at <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/tag/thecableshow">The Cable Show</a> and displayed the company's prototype <a href="http://www.engadget.com/product/apple-ipad">iPad</a> app, the Xfinity Remote. At least so far it doesn't appear to let you <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/04/comcast-smears-the-xfinity-brand-across-all-its-services/">stream television programs</a> directly to Apple's media consumption device, but it does let you turn it into a TV guide browser and remote for your set-top box that outpaces even its already released <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2010/03/08/comcast-mobile-2-0-for-iphone-flashes-remote-dvr-scheduling-skil/">iPhone prog</a>. They pulled in G4's Kevin Pereira for the quick video demo (embedded after the break) highlighting not only the <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2010/01/14/comcasts-guide-software-adds-brains-but-beauty-remains-elusive/">remote DVR scheduling</a> but also a social feature that lets you invite friends to watch live TV with you -- as long as they have Comcast, and the app, and an iPad. Of course, the innovation we'd like to see is a new UI for our cable boxes like the one shown on the iPad... or the one we saw <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2008/01/10/hands-on-with-the-latest-tv-guide-software-comcast-dvr/">a few years ago</a>. So far the reaction to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/04/updated-fios-twitter-and-facebook-widgets-add-onscreen-keyboard/">Facebook and Twitter chat on the screen via widgets</a> has been mild at best, but social tie-ins to another screen could be just what our <i>Real Housewives of New York</i> viewing parties need.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/12/comcast-xfinity-ipad-app-changes-channels-and-invites-friends-t/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Comcast Xfinity iPad remote app changes channels and invites friends to watch RHONY</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/12/comcast-xfinity-ipad-app-changes-channels-and-invites-friends-t/">Comcast Xfinity iPad remote app changes channels and invites friends to watch RHONY</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 12 May 2010 15:24:00 EST. Lots of news coming out of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TheCableShow/">The Cable Show</a> this week with the latest being a new HD DVR from Motorola. The DCX3501-M features a 500GB hard drive, MoCA 1.1, eSATA and is Energy Star 2011 compliant. All of that equals a box that is probably way better than anything anyone's ever gotten from a cable company. Personally, 500GB and two tuners wouldn't be enough for our household, but with built in multi-room support and a functional eSATA port, things get more interesting. Of course we'll all have to wait until at least the 3rd quarter of this year before there's a chance our cable company will start deploying these, but in the meantime you can click through and read the full press release.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/motorola-rolls-out-the-latest-hd-dvr-the-dcx3501-m/">Motorola rolls out the latest HD DVR, the DCX3501-M</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 11 May 2010 21:27:00 EST. Long before Macrovision bought TV Guide (formerly Gemstar) and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/16/macrovision-re-invents-itself-as-rovi-kicks-off-with-new-guide/">change its name to Rov</a>i, we've been seeing guide demos that are worth getting excited about. But after years and years of the same old crap from big cable, all the excitement is dashed instantly as we realize we'll never see 'em deployed. We'd love to believe that the new TotalGuide for Service Providers announced this week at The Cable Show would change all that, you know with its slick looking user interface and unified search -- which appears to be a better implementation than TiVo's. If the screen shot above looks familiar it's because it looks similar to the TotalGuide for CE (used to be codenamed Liquid) that is currently available to CE manufacturers. More pictures and screen shot after the jump.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/rovi-introduces-latest-cable-guide-that-youll-never-see/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rovi introduces latest cable guide that you'll never see</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/rovi-introduces-latest-cable-guide-that-youll-never-see/">Rovi introduces latest cable guide that you'll never see</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 11 May 2010 20:18:00 EST. Ok, we've seen <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/multiroom">multiroom</a> setups, mostly from <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/totalhomedvr">IPTV providers</a>, and <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/tru2way">tru2way</a> has had a limited rollout so far, but Time Warner Cable and Motorola are teaming up to be the first to bring the two together in customers homes. Follow Me TV is already available on <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/fios">FiOS</a>, but the <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/DolbyDigitalPlus/">Dolby Digital Plus</a>-supporting DCX3400-M DVR we <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/01/07/hands-on-with-motorola-dcx-series-mpeg-4-cable-stb/">saw at CES in '08 </a>and DXC-3200M set-top box will make it happen on cable, shifting high definition video around the house via Multimedia over Coaxial Alliance (<a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/MoCA">MoCA</a>) connections. Hopefully tru2way's interoperability lets customers choose what equipment makes up their home video network, not just the cable company, but we should find out more after launch later this year.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdtv/" rel="tag">HDTV</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/01/motorola-time-warner-mixing-up-multiroom-tru2way-cable-setups/">Motorola, Time Warner mixing up multiroom, tru2way cable setups due later this year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 01 Apr 2009 10:39:00 EST. At <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/theCableShow/">the Cable Show</a> this week <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Macrovision/">Macrovision</a> is showing off its new tru2way Passport software, which we have to say is pretty cool looking. Of course it isn't the coolest looking software we've seen, but it is the best looking <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tru2way/">tru2way</a> option so far and at least it is widescreen. But maybe in what might be bigger news to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Comcast/">Comcast</a> <strike>fans</strike> customers around the country -- or anyone who uses the Passport of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iGuide/">iGuide</a> software really -- is the that like the Passport tru2way software, the new Passport and iGuide software will also support <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mrv/">multi-room viewing</a>. So you'll finally be able to have your content follow you around the house and automatically pick up where you left off. Unfortunately <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/24/verizon-fios-hd-dvr-review/">like other solutions based on the Motorola boxes</a> it's limited to two tuners throughout the house -- because a DVR can only act as a server and not as a client -- and we'd bet our old friends at the cable company will continue to only offer DVRs with puney 160GB hard drives, which really makes it hard for most families to get by with a single DVR.<br /><br />

Yes, we were disappointed by the lack of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/19/the-state-of-tru2way-according-to-ces/">tru2way</a> at CES. Luckily, next month's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TheCableShow/">The Cable Show</a> should give a bit of a lift, with interactive program guides, games, chat, web browsers and more on display. Samsung is the most notable hardware name we noticed on the list, but with only <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/19/samsung-shows-off-smt-3090-tru2way-dvr/">set-top boxes</a>, home networking and portability apps on the menu our question of when its compatible TVs may go one sale will likely remain unanswered. Check out the release for the full listing, whether 2009 is the year of tru2way or not should certainly be more clear once the show is underway from April 1-3.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/samsung/" rel="tag">Samsung</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cable/" rel="tag">Cable</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/12/plenty-of-tru2way-demos-planned-for-the-cable-show-in-april/">Plenty of tru2way demos planned for The Cable Show in April</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 12 Mar 2009 01:51:00 EST. With the looming <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tuningadapter">Tuning Adapter</a> practically stealing the limelight at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/23/the-cable-show-2008-roundup/">The Cable Show 2008</a>, we can't help but wonder: how many of you are actually waiting in tense anticipation to snag one of these rascals? Are you holding off on buying a set-top-box until <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tru2way/">tru2way</a> DVRs hit the market? Let us know just how important this stuff is to you.<br /><br />

This was the first time The Cable Show was back in the Big Easy since Katrina, and the first we've attended, too. For those unfamiliar, it's the cable industry's biggest event, and we certainly left with a new perspective on Big Cable. Also getting introduced was its SmartStream Terminal Data Collector (STDC) software that gathers up diagnostic info from your Motorola STB and sends it to the helpful cable representative at the other end of the line. The idea, of course, is that field service (requiring a truck roll) will be replaceable by phone service (requiring hold time). Better still, the software is installable on-demand, so there won't even be a truck roll required to inject the code to your STB. We wouldn't expect cable companies to necessarily waive service fees for remote assistance, however. Just be thankful that help with your cable service may force you into tying yourself to the house between the hours of 10AM and 4PM.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/set-top-boxes/" rel="tag">Set-top boxes</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cable/" rel="tag">Cable</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/22/motorolas-smartstream-remote-diagnostics-to-replace-truck-rolls/">Motorola's SmartStream remote diagnostics to replace truck rolls</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 22 May 2008 04:59:00 EST. We f<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/opencable-officially-becomes-true2way/ ">irst heard about tru2way</a> just before CES and at first we were confused, then after checking out <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/10/tru2way-tvs-at-ces-2008/">all the tru2way HDTVs</a> at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/CES/">CES</a>, we realized it as a way for us access VOD and other interactive services on our non-cable issued HDTVs or TiVo DVRs. But now that we had the chance to sit in a on a few <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tru2way/">tru2way</a> developers sessions, and walk the floor at this year's Cable Show, we are starting to get the big picture. You see there really wasn't that many mentions of third-party tru2way devices at the show. Instead everyone was more interested in the cable companies deploy schedule for their own tru2way STBs. Developers want to know how to get their applications onto customer's TVs, and cable companies hope to spawn new growth by providing interactive services while at the same time eliminating its dependency on a single STB manufacturer.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/21/cable-has-big-plans-for-tru2way/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cable has big plans for tru2way</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/21/cable-has-big-plans-for-tru2way/">Cable has big plans for tru2way</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 21 May 2008 15:57:00 EST. While we're eager to get tru2way capabilities wrapped into our TVs, this is the next best thing. With a name like ADB-4820C, though, you know this device is aimed at multiple system operators (MSOs) only. The unit certainly looks friendly enough, though -- it's slim and designed to be mounted on the back of a TV and has a good-sized selection of outputs: RF, S-Video, composite and HDMI (with CEC) should make it suitable for deployment on just about every TV. Likewise, all the cable format bases are covered: MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and VC-1. Pricing and availability will depend, of course, on your cable provider; but it's available to them now.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.abnnewswire.net/press/en/52056/Advanced-Digital-Broadcast-Holdings-SA.html">Asia Business News</a>]<br /><br /><a href="http://www.adbglobal.com/files/FINAL%204820C%20introduction.pdf">Read</a> - ADB-4820C Press release [PDF]<br /><a href="http://www.adbglobal.com/files/ADB_datasheet_4820C_USqtr.pdf">Read</a> - ADB-4820C Spec sheet [PDF]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/set-top-boxes/" rel="tag">Set-top boxes</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cable/" rel="tag">Cable</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/20/adb-shows-off-tru2way-stb-to-msos/">ADB shows off tru2way STB to MSOs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 20 May 2008 16:51:00 EST. It's tough to get too excited about new cable STBs, but the latest crop do have some pretty cool features. The coolest new feature we noticed -- other than tru2way of course -- was the fact that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/18/pace-unveils-new-mpeg-4-cable-stb/">new line of Pace HD STBs</a> have a built in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DOCSIS/">DOCSIS</a> modem. This will allow the STB to access the Internet, but also via the included Ethernet port on the back, you can say goodbye to your dedicated cable modem. Anytime we can get rid of yet another box and accompanying wall-wart, we're happy.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/pace-aspen-and-apache-hd-stbs/">Pace Aspen and Apache HD STBs</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/pace-aspen-and-apache-hd-stbs/#814277"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/thecableshow01lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/pace-aspen-and-apache-hd-stbs/#814278"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/thecableshow02lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/pace-aspen-and-apache-hd-stbs/#814279"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/thecableshow03lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/pace-aspen-and-apache-hd-stbs/#814280"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/thecableshow04lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/pace-aspen-and-apache-hd-stbs/#814281"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/thecableshow16lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/dvrs/" rel="tag">DVRs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/set-top-boxes/" rel="tag">Set-top boxes</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/20/up-close-and-personal-with-the-new-pace-hd-stbs/">Up close and personal with the new Pace HD STBs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 20 May 2008 10:54:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TheCableShow/">The Cable Show</a> is all about bringing the members of the cable TV industry together, and unlike the Consumer Electronics Show, everything is all about business to business. But this doesn't mean the big players don't have big booths, and just like any other show, everyone wants to be on the main aisle. So while we strolled through, we snapped some pics so you could get an idea of what it was like. Also like any other show, some booths were packed like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cable-show-floor-tour/814162/">Motorola's</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cable-show-floor-tour/814160/">Cisco's</a>, but others were like a ghost town -- we almost felt sorry for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cable-show-floor-tour/814137/">Aljazeera booth</a> folks who were talking amongst themselves. The one thing that seemed to hold true wherever we went, was that everyone is excited about <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tru2way/">tru2way,</a> and not for the reasons you think. Cable really thinks it has a chance to take interactivity to the next level, and we hope they're right.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cable-show-floor-tour/">The Cable Show 2008 floor tour</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cable-show-floor-tour/#814137"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/thecableshow14lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cable-show-floor-tour/#814138"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/thecableshow15lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cable-show-floor-tour/#814139"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/thecableshow17lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cable-show-floor-tour/#814149"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/thecableshow18lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cable-show-floor-tour/#814150"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/thecableshow19lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cable/" rel="tag">Cable</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/19/the-cable-show-2008-floor-tour/">The Cable Show 2008 floor tour</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 19 May 2008 21:03:00 EST. <div align="left">Any cable operators about to roll out <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tru2way/">tru2way</a> on their network may take a look at Samsung's SMT-3090 set-top box. The dual-tuner HD DVR comes with a 160GB HDD, DOCSIS 2.0 modem for interactive communication to the headend and Multistream CableCARD. Samsung didn't leave <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/23/panasonic-lone-tv-manufacturer-signed-up-for-tru2way-developers/">Panasonic alone</a>, as it's also demoing a tru2way LCD TV, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/16/samsungs-seensearch-set-top-tv-internet-box-demo-video/">See'n'Search</a> web-enabled tru2way box and a tru2way STB that communicates with the headend to deliver targeted ads based on viewing patterns. All of the coolest stuff at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TheCableShow/">The Cable Show</a> was on display at the CableNet booth. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/18/hands-on-with-the-motorola-tuning-adapter-mtr700/">The Motorola Tuning Adapter</a> was there, but it was only one of about 30 small demos. The rest were from a entire range of companies showing off how cable can be the center of the connected home. There were software vendors showing off their <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cablenet-booth-tour-at-the-cable-show/814030/">tru2way award winning games</a> -- which made us wonder if they were the only one -- <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cablenet-booth-tour-at-the-cable-show/814016/">Moxi's had its long overdue DVR for MSOs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cablenet-booth-tour-at-the-cable-show/814012/">GE</a> and Next Alarm were hoping to help big cable get into the monitoring business, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cablenet-booth-tour-at-the-cable-show/814025/">Sigma Designs had a triple HD tuner</a> chipset, and finally <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cablenet-booth-tour-at-the-cable-show/814033/">Samsung was showing off its tru2way DVR</a> and software called <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cablenet-booth-tour-at-the-cable-show/814036/">SeeNSearch</a> which adds Internet links to the program guide and lets you access web pages directly from the guide for display on your TV, but interestingly, isn't tru2way.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cablenet-booth-tour-at-the-cable-show/">The CableNET Booth tour at The Cable Show</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cablenet-booth-tour-at-the-cable-show/#814017"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/thecableshow11lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="CabelNET Booth" title="CabelNET Booth" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cablenet-booth-tour-at-the-cable-show/#814028"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/thecableshow46lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="CabelNET Booth5" title="CabelNET Booth5" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cablenet-booth-tour-at-the-cable-show/#814029"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/thecableshow47lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="CabelNET Booth" title="CabelNET Booth" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cablenet-booth-tour-at-the-cable-show/#814022"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/thecableshow39lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="CabelNET Booth" title="CabelNET Booth" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-cablenet-booth-tour-at-the-cable-show/#814023"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/thecableshow40lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="CableNET Booth" title="CableNET Booth" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/dvrs/" rel="tag">DVRs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/other-hardware/" rel="tag">Other hardware</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/set-top-boxes/" rel="tag">Set-top boxes</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cable/" rel="tag">Cable</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/19/the-cablenet-booth-tour-at-the-cable-show/">The CableNET Booth tour at The Cable Show</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 19 May 2008 14:29:00 EST. <div align="left">Unlike <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/18/hands-on-with-the-motorola-tuning-adapter-mtr700/">Motorola's Tuning Adapter demo</a>, Cisco's wasn't a functional demo, but basically the two boxes do the same thing. The Cisco version is considerably bigger (the box on the top is a basic digital converter, not the TA), but includes the same exact connections. While Moto claims its adapter will be available in July, Cisco is saying it'll come sometime during the 3rd quarter, which could mean the same thing. Like Moto, Cisco is reusing an existing STB form factor so although <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cisco-tuning-adapter-sta1520/813546/">it appears the box has a CableCARD slot</a>, it doesn't.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cisco-tuning-adapter-sta1520/">Cisco Tuning Adapter STA1520</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cisco-tuning-adapter-sta1520/#813545"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/sta1520_1_lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cisco-tuning-adapter-sta1520/#813892"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/ta152001lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cisco-tuning-adapter-sta1520/#813546"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/sta1520_2_lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cisco-tuning-adapter-sta1520/#813891"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/ta152002lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/cisco-tuning-adapter-sta1520/#813544"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/sta1520_3_lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div>

Ring the bell folks <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mgmhd">MGM HD</a> has racked up another one, this time inking a deal with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/timewarner">Time Warner Cable</a> to distribute its high definition network to subscribers. Promoting its wares on a 103-inch screen at The Cable Show, MGM continues to tout its 4,100 title-deep library of 1080i content. <em>Multichannel News</em> has more info its background, as an HD-only channel MGM HD charges a license fee to operators, causing it to reside on an HD tier with DirecTV and Dish Network. It's still unclear what it might cost to get the channel whenever it is eventually available on Time Warner, but executive VP Douglas Lee is confident those tiers will eventually "kind of melt away". We can only hope. The highlight of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/21/tru2way-demonstrations-to-dominate-the-cable-show/">The Cable Show</a> for us was actually to be able to see the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/21/motorolas-mtr700-tuning-resolver-edges-closer-to-release/">Motorola Tuning Adapter</a> in action. Sure it isn't that exciting of a product, but just the idea that our beloved TiVo won't be useless because of the fact that all latest HD channels are being deployed with SDV (Switched Digital Video) is enough to get us going. The MTR700 was named before CableLabs renamed the class of product from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Tuning+Resolver/">Tuning Resolver</a> to Tuning Adapter, and should be available to cable companies in July. Unfortunately there's really no way to tell how long it'll take before your provider makes it available to you, or for how much. For the most part, there's no change from a user's perspective, so much so that for the demo the channels were relabeled so we could tell which were SDV, and which weren't. In fact the only way you can even tell this thing is connected, is because the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-motorola-tuning-adapter/812529/">TiVo's Devices menu</a> has a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-motorola-tuning-adapter/812528/">new option</a> with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-motorola-tuning-adapter/812523/">a whole slew of troubleshooting options</a> for the cable guy. Changing channels was just as fast -- or slow depending on your perspective -- as a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TiVoHD/">TiVo HD</a> tuning standard HD broadcast channels. Click on through to the gallery to see all the pictures of it in action.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-motorola-tuning-adapter/">Hands-on with the Motorola Tuning Adapter</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-motorola-tuning-adapter/#812527"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/mtr70009lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Motorola Demo" title="Motorola Demo" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-motorola-tuning-adapter/#812525"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/mtr70010lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-motorola-tuning-adapter/#812519"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/mtr70011lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-motorola-tuning-adapter/#812518"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/mtr70018lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-motorola-tuning-adapter/#812521"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/05/mtr70017lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/dvrs/" rel="tag">DVRs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/set-top-boxes/" rel="tag">Set-top boxes</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cable/" rel="tag">Cable</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/18/hands-on-with-the-motorola-tuning-adapter-mtr700/">Hands-on with the Motorola Tuning Adapter MTR700</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 18 May 2008 18:38:00 EST. The Cable Show '08 is shaping up to be quite the event. Not only will Motorola's forthcoming <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/21/motorolas-mtr700-tuning-resolver-edges-closer-to-release/">MTR700 tuning resolver</a> be on display and strutting its stuff, but the much anticipated <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tru2way/">tru2way</a> technology will be impossible to miss. Companies such as Samsung, Sigma Designs, and Zodiac Interactive will be in New Orleans showing off tru2way tech, while advanced video demonstrations are promised to come from Digeo, Motorola, Pixel3, and Symmetricom. More specifically, Sigma Designs will be demoing an "integrated tru2way-based set-top-box that features four narrow band tuners which can display three video channels -- HD as well as SD," while Zodiac Interactive trumpets its Zidget framework, which "utilizes its plug-in architecture to support applications such as local search, weather, traffic, sports scores, and local news without disrupting the TV viewing experience." Needless to say, May can't come soon enough.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/dvrs/" rel="tag">DVRs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/set-top-boxes/" rel="tag">Set-top boxes</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/others/" rel="tag">Others</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/samsung/" rel="tag">Samsung</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/21/tru2way-demonstrations-to-dominate-the-cable-show/">tru2way demonstrations to dominate The Cable Show</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 21 Apr 2008 16:50:00 EST.
