<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center; "><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/03/vudu-disc-to-digital-ultraviolet-os-x/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Vudu disctodigital at home leaves beta, comes to Mac" data-src-height="376" data-src-width="619" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/06/vududisctodigitalathome1.jpg" /></a></p>

<p>It took some time to work out most of the bugs, but Vudu is finally expanding its beta of its home-based disc-to-digital service. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/31/vudu-brings-disc-to-digital-ultraviolet-conversions-home-to-beta/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">idea and the price are still the same as when the private beta launched</a>, but what's new is support for OS X, plus an improved user experience and disc identification powered by Gracenote. We gave it a try and found the process couldn't be any easier or more straight forward. To get others to try it out, Vudu is giving away the first conversion on the house and if you're willing to convert ten or more movies then you'll get a 50 percent discount. After converting a DVD to HDX we were instantly able to turn around and start watching it, far faster than any disc ripping software we've used. Add in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/20/vudu-player-ios-downloads/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">the newfound ability to download movies to iOS and Android devices</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/UltraViolet/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">UltraViolet</a> is really shaping up -- though we're still waiting for that common file format to move copies between devices easily and single sign-on to fix the login mess.</p>

<p>Coming months after the feature's introduction <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/19/vudu-for-android-tablets/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">on Android</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/15/vudu-hdx-pc/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PCs</a>, Vudu has updated the iOS version of its app with the ability to download movies for viewing offline. Unlike the Android version, this feature is not restricted to tablets however, with downloads of your Vudu / Ultraviolet collection on iPads and iPhones. Other tweaks include making the Player "easier to use" and adding closed captions on iPhone. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/16/digital-downloads-bring-ultraviolet-one-step-closer-to-being-use/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Flixster</a> app already allowed for Ultraviolet movie downloads on iOS, however Vudu has access to some movies that may not be available there. The updated version of the free app is available on on iTunes, although you will need an associated account (with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/09/vudu-offices-burglarized-and-customer-info-stolen/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">updated password info</a>) with unlocked videos to get any use out of it.</p>

Video streaming service Vudu, however, was the victim of an old fashioned burglary on March 24th of this year when someone broke into its offices and stole hard drives with customer data on them. According to an e-mail sent out to users today, those HDDs "<span style="text-align: justify;">contained customer information, including names, email addresses, postal addresses, phone numbers, account activity, dates of birth and the last four digits of some credit card numbers." Thankfully, the full CC numbers aren't kept by Vudu, but all the same, the service is giving affected accounts AllClear ID protection for free for one year. Vudu's also requiring users to reset their passwords today -- despite the fact that the passwords on the stolen drives are encrypted -- to ensure that everything will be safe and sound moving forward.</span></p><p> [Thanks, @steveymacjr and everyone who sent this in]</p>

It includes features that appeal to classic Boxee fans like support for DLNA rendering that lets it browse and play files from PCs or other devices on the same network and DMR that lets users push media to it from apps like Skifta. For more traditional viewers, the update also brings a standard TV guide users can pull up by selecting "TV" on the home screen, the ability to schedule and manage DVR recordings from antenna on the box itself (previously only possible via webpage for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/01/boxee-tv-launch-new-apps-guide-walmart/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">still-in-beta feature</a>), notifications for upcoming recordings and even 3D support in the Vudu app. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/boxee/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Boxee</a> co-founder Idan Cohen <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/16/live-reprogramming/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">joined us at Expand</a> and mentioned some of the other updates the team is working on, we'll see if oft-requested features like the ability to pause live TV are added any time soon. <span>Hit the source link for the full list of changes, current owners should see the new software arrive over the next few days.</span></p>

The previously promised release mostly focuses on giving it the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/14/google-tv-voice-search-primetime-quick-guide/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">third-generation Google TV</a> interface, including the mini-guide, YouTube pairing and (through a future Android app update) voice-guided search. Just like the in-store process, DVDs or Blu-rays can be leveraged to buy digital versions of the movie anywhere UltraViolet movies are available. Going from a DVD to an standard definition copy will run you $2, while upgrading to HD is $5 -- Blu-ray to HD is also $2 -- which is the exact same pricing as the in-store offering. Those who want to convert a few titles, and are lucky enough to get invited to the beta, can download the Windows-only application to a computer that has the required optical disc drive. Mac support is promised soon, but with the limited number of Macs with Blu-ray drives, we'd suspect that version will only work with DVDs.</p>

That's why major players Time Warner and Vudu have signed up <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/21/jinni-taste-engine-for-tv-and-movies-envisioned-as-a-google-tv-a/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Jinni's</a> taste engine to build into their platforms to help you find entertainment -- no more boring grid-style guides, Jinni promises. We're apparently entering, "a new era of intuitive, personalized user experience," which sounds perfectly swell to us. A duo of European providers are also hopping on board -- Bouygues Telecom and C More Entertainment -- as well as Asia's SingTel and Africa's Multichoice.</p><p> Nobody's talking specifics on when we'll see these metadata-pulling suggestions appear in homes, but if your horizons suddenly start to broaden, you know who to blame.</p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/09/eyes-on-with-lg-streaming-smart-sound-bar/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Eyeson with LG's Smart Sound Bar" data-src-height="411" data-src-width="620" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/lg-smart-sound-bar-hands-on.jpg" /></a></p><p> Among the many, many things that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/07/lg-liveblog/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">LG is unveiling</a> at CES this year is the curious addition of a sound bar with built-in video streaming. That still sounds like a contradiction of purpose to us, but the Smart Sound Bar, also known as the NB3730A, is more fascinating once you dive into the details. The large-sized bar pumps out 300W across its 2.1 channels, and its WiFi takes internet audio and video from CinemaNow, general internet radio, Netflix, Pandora and Vudu. Bluetooth audio is built-in as well. It's ultimately built for those who don't have an online-capable TV, Blu-ray player or media hub at their disposal -- a group whose ranks are thinning quickly, but certainly still exists.</p><p> We got a quick glance at the Smart Sound Bar for ourselves. From a design perspective, it's simple to operate and thin, if not exactly short. This won't be a good fit for that small TV in the basement, then, although it's perfect for that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/08/lgs-55-inch-3d-google-tv-eyes-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">big wall-mounted set</a>. We'd like to tell you how well it works in real life, but expo conditions dictate otherwise: LG unfortunately lacks an internet connection for the sound bar on demo, and an extra-crowded booth isn't the ideal environment for gauging audio quality. If you're mostly wondering whether or not it will fit into the living room decor, however, we've got a gallery for you below. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/lg-smart-sound-bar-eyes-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">LG Smart Sound Bar eyes-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/lg-smart-sound-bar-eyes-on/5556662?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/dsc05457-1357790109_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/lg-smart-sound-bar-eyes-on/5556664?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/dsc05454-1357790111_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/lg-smart-sound-bar-eyes-on/5556659?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/dsc05423_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/lg-smart-sound-bar-eyes-on/5556663?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/dsc05444-1357790110_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/lg-smart-sound-bar-eyes-on/5556658?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/dsc05463_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

The 2D DMP-BD79 Blu-ray player is the only one in the lineup without built-in WiFi, while the high-end DMP-BDP330 is the only new Blu-ray model with 4K up-scaling, a web browser and two HDMI outputs. Like the 330, the DMP-BDP230 also does 2D-3D conversion and features Display Mirroring with select Andriod phones and tablets as well as featuring <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Miracast/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Miracast</a> -- the DMP-MST60 and DMP-MS10 media streamers also do mirroring and Miracast. Powered by the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/vudu/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Vudu</a> To Go app for Mac and Windows PCs that already lets viewers <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/15/vudu-hdx-pc/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">stream or download movies in up to 1080p</a>, they can search for previously purchased movies from participating studios (DreamWorks Animation, Lionsgate, MGM Studios, Paramount Home Media Distribution, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment) and then convert them: DVD to SD or Blu-ray to HD for $2, DVD to HD for $5. Like the beta feature <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/20/best-buys-cinemanow-kicks-home-disc-to-digital-program-gives-d/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">recently launched by Best Buy's CinemaNow</a>, the app authorizes the copy and then you can watch it through any of the numerous Vudu / UltraViolet-ready devices and services merely by logging in.</p><p> One other new feature on the way is the ability for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/10/vudu-starts-streaming-movies-to-the-ipad-chooses-the-web-app-ro/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Vudu users on iOS</a> to download copies to their devices for viewing offline. We first saw the feature on mobiles when its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/19/vudu-for-android-tablets/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Android tablet app launched last month</a>, and it will come to the Apple family of hardware in mid-February. One other note as Walmart attempts to expand its "Entertainment" brand is a Facebook app that will let its fans read and submit reviews and also vote on which movies will be offered for sale in-store and online. Still need a reason to give UltraViolet a try? Vudu is tossing new users 10 free pre-selected movies just for linking their account or signing up. Check out the full list of details in the press release after the break or hit the source link to see if it's live.</p>

Interestingly, it's included a key feature not currently available in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/10/vudu-starts-streaming-movies-to-the-ipad-chooses-the-web-app-ro/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPad and iPhone Vudu Player app</a>: users can download videos for offline viewing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/15/vudu-hdx-pc/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">just like they do on PCs</a>, not just streaming over WiFi in the browser. A free app ready for download to "select" Android tablets, there's no word on when or if it will appear on phones, but we're told the list of supported devices will continue to grow.</p><p> Vudu also notes in the press release (included after the break) that as of last month, its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/20/microsoft-rolls-out-more-new-xbox-360-apps-including-ufc-and-vud/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Xbox 360 app</a> has been updated to support <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/02/vudu-goes-live-with-1080p-hdx-rentals-doesnt-charge-extra-for/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">1080p HDX</a> streaming video. Do you really need another reason to give it a shot? If so, try this one on -- all new users who activate an UltraViolet account between now and March get 10 free movies. There's still the pain of creating multiple logins for the virtual locker, but between Vudu and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/04/revamped-flixster-com-gives-one-stop-digital-movie-access-for-bo/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Flixster</a> offers you should be able to snag a bunch of free flicks watchable anywhere on your Android device without spending a cent (or hunting through torrents and the like, your choice).</p>

Whether you're searching by movie, TV show, actor or director it will sniff out related content across some of the higher profile services it offers, including Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, Crackle, Vudu and HBO Go. The new Roku Search function is front and center (once your second gen HD or higher player has been updated to the latest version) and in our tests worked quickly, pulling up content wherever it was available and mentioning if it was available in HD. The only downside is navigating the onscreen keyboard via remote, although you can always sub in your mobile device thanks to those <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/20/play-on-roku-ios-android/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">recently upgraded remote apps for iOS and Android</a>. All in all Roku says it can reach its tendrils across around 130,000 titles and almost 100,000 actors and directors. Check after the break for a couple of screenshots and a quick demo video, hit the official blog for more info or force an update on your hockey puck to check it out yourself.</p>

For <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/JVC/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">JVC</a>, that trick is sound. It's launching the BlackSapphire line of LCD-based 3D TVs with the 55-inch, edge LED-lit JLE55SP4400, whose signature is an unusually powerful built-in audio system: the 45W system and 3D processing supposedly produces surround sound without having to line the living room with extra speakers. Odds are that the set won't provide much competition for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/24/klipsch-refreshes-quintet-5-1-home-theater-system/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">dedicated speakers</a>, although JVC is promising more integration beyond this with rare built-in SlingPlayer TV streaming, just in case there's a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/09/slingbox-350--500-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Slingbox</a> in another part of the home. The all-in strategy could make the inaugural BlackSapphire more of a bargain than it looks: that $1,300 you'll pay when the screen ships this month might be all you need to start watching.</p>

After two years of fighting Roku, Apple TV and, to a lesser extent, Google TV for market share, Boxee has drastically rethought its approach. The $99 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/08/boxee-tv-streaming-ota-set-top-box-and-dvr-pics-leak-out/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Boxee TV</a> marks a new chapter for the company with a focus on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/24/boxee-box-live-tv-starts-shipping-boxee-1-5-software-update-now/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">live TV</a> and a streamlined consumer experience. There's a slick guide to help you navigate but, most importantly, the slimmed down software sports DVR functionality. The Boxee TV has no internal storage, however, instead all your recordings are <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/04/cloudee-beta-gets-boxee-into-the-video-sharing-and-cloud-storage/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">stored online</a> in a "No Limits" DVR. For $15 a month you'll be able to save as many shows as you want and watch it on your TV or on your computer, tablet or phone through an HTML5 webapp. The DVR service will be rolled out to New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Washington DC to start, with other markets set to come online in 2013.</p><p> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/boxee-tv-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Boxee TV hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/boxee-tv-hands-on/5362882?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/10-10-2012dsc0435211_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/boxee-tv-hands-on/5362881?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/10-10-2012dsc0435110_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/boxee-tv-hands-on/5362884?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/10-10-2012dsc0435413_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/boxee-tv-hands-on/5362885?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/10-10-2012dsc0435514_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/boxee-tv-hands-on/5362886?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/10-10-2012dsc0435615_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/boxee-tv-press-shots/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Boxee TV press shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/boxee-tv-press-shots/5362901?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/10-15-2012il6m1phn3ipki2vlc67y5emih6lleymlzefvglwm402_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/boxee-tv-press-shots/5362902?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/10-15-2012nkl0zav6jbpgzpbllrhfmwckijfr4hf0bd8plhfhfk08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/boxee-tv-press-shots/5362896?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/10-15-20124ebg8wz2nm4s5ofituee2fhxegwwcmuwcec3aj6hvbc00_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/boxee-tv-press-shots/5362897?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/10-15-2012ag8pqybbllgiybhalekhdrqtsinxk2v4c0c7rcz3tw01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/boxee-tv-press-shots/5362898?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/10-15-2012ftsfxsw-l99-cmmrjrl9-g9crgzkekoop5r-fiiawg05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p> The selection of apps is not quite as robust as it is on the legacy Boxee Box, but CEO Avner Ronen has settled on a quality over quantity approach. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/14/netflix-on-the-boxee-box-is-a-much-better-valentines-day-gift-t/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Netflix</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/19/vudu-arrives-on-the-boxee-box-along-with-a-host-of-big-fixes/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">VUDU</a>, Pandora, YouTube and Vimeo will come preinstalled on the Boxee TV and other apps will follow. But we wouldn't expect to see Know Your Meme or PornHub on there anytime soon. The company has also moved from Intel to a Broadcom SOC. Some of the other losses might be a little harder to swallow for fans of the original hardware. The streaming options for locally stored media are much less robust and, while there's DLNA support, many other networking protocols have fallen by the wayside. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/06/d-link-brings-the-boxee-box-remote-to-pc-mac-users/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">beloved QWERTY remote</a> has also bitten the dust, replaced with a much simpler device that sports <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/04/netflix-one-click-remotes-coming-to-nearly-every-device-it-str/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">dedicated Netflix</a> and Vudu buttons. Even the distinctive "sinking cube" design has been replaced with a basic rectangle that's barely distinguishable from other settop boxes. You can sign up for more info at the Boxee site where you'll also be able to preorder the Boxee TV ahead of its November 1st launch.</p>

Physical media isn't the only game in town, obviously, so in addition to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Netflix/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Netflix</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Vudu/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Vudu</a> and local file support like MKV, Oppo has stepped it up even further by adding an HDMI port in front for use as an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/MHL/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">MHL</a> input. This allows you to leverage the high-end Oppo's processing to do wonders on content stored on your portable or other <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mhl,roku?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">MHL source</a>. Speaking of video processing, both the new guys use Marvell's Qdeo video processor and are capable of doing both 2D-to-3D conversion as well as up-scaling to 4K. From a control perspective, a back-lit remote is included, but there's also an <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2010/06/30/hd-101-ir-blasters-hdmi-cec-rs-232-and-ip-control/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">IR input, RS-232</a> and mobile phone apps. The BDP-103 will surely satisfy any videophile at $499 this October, but if you happen to be an audiophile too, then you'd probably want to wait until the BDP-105 is released later this year. Not only does it feature two ESS Sabre32 Reference DACs and a Toroidal linear power supply, but there are also dedicated stereo outputs with both RCA and XLR balanced connections and a headphone amplifier -- if you know what all that is, we're sure you really want it.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/oppo-bdp-103-and-bpd-105/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Oppo BDP-103 and BPD-105</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/oppo-bdp-103-and-bpd-105/5300691?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/bdp-103_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/oppo-bdp-103-and-bpd-105/5300692?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/bdp-105_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/oppo-bdp-103-and-bpd-105/5300693?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/bdp-103-back_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

Priced the same as as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/19/roku-2-hd-xd-and-xs-officially-launch-same-price-smaller-siz/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Roku 2 XS</a> set-top box, it brings the same feature set but in a smaller package designed to work directly with your HDTV, thanks to power, remote control and data signals fed through an MHL-compatible HDMI port. While it will work with other MHL-ready host devices, manufacturers with Roku Ready stamped and certified HDTVs on shelves this fall will include Apex, Insignia and Hitachi -- Onkyo plans to ship receivers early next year. If you pick up an otherwise dumb flat-panel with the stick bundled along with it the price is set by that manufacturer, but the standalone plan means buyers savings are focused on the two cables they won't be needing, and simplified remote capability since their TV remote can talk to the Stick directly. Like the Roku 2 XS, the Streaming Stick also includes the motion control capable game remote.</p><p> A separate move will benefit many existing Roku owners, as it is also announcing that Walmart-owned <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/vudu?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Vudu</a> is launching on the platform today. You will need a Roku HD (2500), LT or Roku 2 box (or the Streaming Stick, once it launches) to take advantage of the Vudu app and its streams that bring quality of up to 1080p and 7.1 surround sound. That also means access to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/vudu,ultraviolet?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Vudu-compatible UltraViolet</a> movie titles on yet another set-top box, if that's a consideration, and users score a $5.99 credit with Vudu just for linking the account to their boxes. All the details are in the press release after the break, and on the Roku blog.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/roku-streaming-stick-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Roku Streaming Stick hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/roku-streaming-stick-hands-on/4735542?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/rokumhl101lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/roku-streaming-stick-hands-on/4735543?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/rokumhl102lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/roku-streaming-stick-hands-on/4735544?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/rokumhl103lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/roku-streaming-stick-hands-on/4735545?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/rokumhl104lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/roku-streaming-stick-hands-on/4735546?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/rokumhl105lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

The studio is about to see if that gamble on common sense pays off. As of today, you'll find 600-plus Fox movies ready to buy or rent in HD across every major digital video store in the US, with many downloads cleared to arrive ahead of their physical counterparts at lower prices that reflect a disc-free reality. The media giant has also decided to play nicely with Google after a longstanding absence, putting its movies and TV shows on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/GooglePlayMovies/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google Play Movies</a> and YouTube. Its tentpole movie release <em>Prometheus</em> is unsurprisingly being used as the prime incentive to try Digital HD; the title is available online three weeks before the Blu-ray launch at a more reasonable $15 price. The sci-fi thriller is even Fox's first movie destined for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/UltraViolet/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">UltraViolet</a> cloud lockers. Only Americans will have expanded access to movies and TV at first, but it shouldn't be too long before many countries can be creeped out by Michael Fassbender's android -- including on their Android devices.</p>

The first movie to get the treatment will be Ridley Scott's <i><a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/prometheus?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Prometheus</a> </i>later this month, and Fox is pricing the copies at about $15, down from the $20 of previous releases. Other flicks on deck for the early digital sale treatment are <i>Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter</i>, <i>The Watch</i> and <i>Ice Age: Continental Drift</i>. Fox is apparently calling the setup Digital HD, or DHD, as it rolls out in 50 different countries all at once, and opted to offer the flicks in high definition instead of issuing cheaper standard def versions to "put its best foot forward". Last year's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/19/directvs-30-per-rental-premium-video-on-demand-service-launche/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">$30 premium VOD rental</a> pilot was another attempt to experiment with release windows that Fox participated in, but DHD's more reasonable pricing makes it an interesting option. Of course, the main trick will be getting customers to opt for an UltraViolet format which is still not supported by Apple and Amazon's movie stores, but dangling early access to mainstream movies could be just the bait required.</p><p> <strong>Update</strong>: We talked to Fox and confirmed that the DHD initiative is not limited to only Ultraviolet. According to the studio when this kicks off September 18th, it will make more than 600 films available across stores including <span>Amazon, CinemaNow, iTunes, PlayStation, VUDU and Xbox. <em>Prometheus</em> is also Fox's first UV title and its first new release under the DHD program, but if you prefer your digital movies in another format, it looks like you'll be able to get them.</span></p><p> <span><strong>Update 2</strong>: The Fox Home Entertainment Twitter account posted a link to the iTunes preorder which is already live, we're not seeing it in the other stores we've checked yet but it will likely show up in those eventually.</span></p>

The refreshed site is available as an open beta starting today that focuses on making it the center of your digital movie watching. Still using Rotten Tomatoes' Tomato Meter as a method for ranking the quality of movies, the new site gives streaming and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/16/digital-downloads-bring-ultraviolet-one-step-closer-to-being-use/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">downloadable</a> access to flicks in your UltraViolet locker as well as direct access to copies from iTunes, Vudu, Amazon or Netflix for purchase, rental or subscription viewing. Of course, while the studio proclaims it to be retailer and studio agnostic, there are plenty of opportunities to start or expand your UltraViolet library through promotions that do things like give away free digital copies of movies for sharing a link to friends, navigating the UltraViolet signup process or downloading one of the apps, which should be getting their own redesign soon. It's not the only site in the business of making navigating the multiple online stores easier -- <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/19/clicker-tv-brings-streaming-internet-video-to-your-tvs-browser/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Clicker</a> immediately comes to mind -- but the backend of the Flixster database of movies in theaters and at home, plus any registered digital copies is a specific advantage. Hit the source link to give the beta a shot and see for yourself.</p>

Our friends at the FCC have just posted a filing that shows the as yet unannounced WD TV Play taking on its set-top rival with a dedicated gaming channel. We're only given a small peek into the new media hub's gaming universe through the pre-release user manual, but we know that a Texas Hold'em variant and other titles will find their way in through the gaming services Funspot and PlayJam. No signs have surfaced of a Roku-like motion control, either, although the remote has been given an overhaul compared to its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/06/wd-tv-streaming-vudu-slingplayer/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">WD TV Live</a> cousin with prominent shortcut buttons for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/HuluPlus/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Hulu Plus</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Netflix/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Netflix</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Vudu/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Vudu</a>. There aren't any immediate clues as to when the otherwise pedestrian-looking Play will take over store shelves -- that said, the virtually complete details hint that there's not long to wait.</p>

Current and new users can now enjoy Red Bull TV[TM], ABC iview (Australian Broadcasting Corporation), Acetrax[TM], Maxdome, the BILD TV-App, and the AOL On Network. They can also watch live and recorded TV with the new SlingPlayer(R) app and save their premium HD movies to the WD TV Live Hub's internal storage with VUDU.</p> <p> WD's new entertainment choices add to the WD TV media player family's prodigious ability to play personal content such as videos, photos and music by supporting a wide range of media formats. Users can watch content located on any networked PC or Mac(R) computer in the home, from a network drive such as WD's My Book(R) Live[TM] personal cloud storage, and from any directly connected digital camcorder, camera, or USB drive. WD TV Live Hub owners can also save and share pictures and videos from outside the home, using the WD Photos[TM] app for iPhone(R), iPad(R) and Android[TM] mobile devices.</p> <p> "WD continuously listens to its customers, and adds the content options they want," said Scott Vouri, vice president and general manager, WD connected home solutions. "By centralizing their entertainment on the WD TV Live Hub, our customers get high-performance full-HD movie playback without overloading their home network or cluttering up the hard drives of other PCs in the house," added Vouri. From "Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol" to "The Muppets" WD brings today's top movies to the WD TV Live Hub for a cinema-like experience at home through the available VUDU service.</p> <p> New Services[1] Now Available:</p> <p> SlingPlayer (worldwide) - With a Slingbox(R) connected in your home, the SlingPlayer app brings your living room TV experience to your connected device in any room - around the home or around the world.<br /> The AOL On Network (US) - The AOL HD app, part of The AOL On Network, features high-definition technology, lifestyle, celebrity and entertainment content updated daily from The AOL On Network, which features video from brands like Engadget, TechCrunch, The Huffington Post and Moviefone.<br /> Red Bull TV (worldwide) - A unique online portal offering exclusive high quality programs from the World of Red Bull in HD.
