Inhabitat is on the scene at <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/detroit-auto-show/">NAIAS 2013</a> to bring you the latest <a href="http://inhabitat.com/transportation/">green car</a> unveilings. So far, <a href="http://inhabitat.com/naias-2013-mercedes-benz-debuts-new-hybrid-version-of-2014-e-class-sedan/">Mercedes-Benz launched its 2014 E Class Hybrid</a> and <a href="http://inhabitat.com/naias-2013-volkswagen-debuts-its-crossblue-plugin-hybrid-concept-suv/">Volkswagen showcased the Crossblue plug-in hybrid SUV</a>. We also saw several breakthrough automotive technologies at <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/ces/">CES 2013</a>. <a href="http://inhabitat.com/audi-unveils-its-future-lighting-technology-at-ces-2013/">Audi unveiled its new futuristic LED headlights</a>, which the company claims will increase visibility and reduce the chances of a collision and <a href="http://inhabitat.com/lexus-unveils-autonomous-advanced-active-safety-research-vehicle-at-ces-2013/">Lexus unveiled a new high-tech autonomous vehicle</a> that could pave the way towards self-driving cars. Also at CES, New York-based company CTA Digital unveiled the iPotty, <a href="http://www.inhabitots.com/the-ipotty-toddler-potty-that-comes-with-built-in-stand-for-ipad-ingenious-or-ridiculous/">a toddler potty that comes with a built-in iPad stand</a>. Earlier last week, the state of Nevada followed California's lead and granted automakers <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nevada-gives-audi-the-first-automaker-permit-to-operate-autonomous-vehicles-on-public-roads/">permission to operate self-driving cars on public roads</a>. In other <a href="http://inhabitat.com/automotive/">green car</a> news, Nissan announced that <a href="http://inhabitat.com/2013-nissan-leaf-is-now-more-efficient-and-charges-in-half-the-time/">the 2013 Nissan Leaf will be more efficient</a>, come with more features and charge in half the time as earlier models.</p>

The Obama administration scored a major win for fuel-efficient cars this week by finalizing new standards that will <a href="http://inhabitat.com/obama-administration-finalizes-54-5-mpg-fuel-efficiency-standards-for-2025/">increase the fuel economy of cars to the equivalent of 54.5 mpg</a> by 2025. But what about the cars that are currently on the road? This week <a href="http://inhabitat.com/test-drive-we-drive-the-2013-focus-electric-in-san-francisco/">we test drove a 2013 Ford Focus Electric</a> through the streets of San Francisco (we admit, we did get a bit of range anxiety). And in one of the most interesting automotive stories from the past week, <a href="http://inhabitat.com/areion-ev-worlds-first-3d-printed-car-hits-140-kmh/">the world's first 3D-printed car</a> -- the Areion EV-- reached a top speed of 141 kph.</p>

It's hard to believe, but the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/back-to-school/">start of the school year</a> is just a few weeks away -- and all week we've been rounding up some of <a href="http://inhabitat.com/10-eco-friendly-essentials-for-back-to-school/">our favorite eco-friendly back-to-school essentials</a>. From <a href="http://inhabitat.com/6-essential-supplies-for-an-eco-friendly-back-to-school/">green school supplies</a> to <a href="http://inhabitat.com/top-6-green-back-to-school-backpacks-for-a-sustainable-academic-year/">sustainable backpacks</a>, we've got all your back-to-school needs covered. And to top it off, we're giving away <a href="http://inhabitat.com/back-to-school-contest-enter-to-win-a-voltaic-laptop-charging-solar-backpack-filled-with-green-school-supplies-worth-500/">a laptop-charging Voltaic solar-powered backpack (worth $389) stuffed with green school supplies for a total prize package worth over $500</a>. If we could go back to school and live in any dorm, we'd probably choose <a href="http://inhabitat.com/lundgaard-and-tranbergs-tietgenkollegiet-dorm-is-the-coolest-circular-housing-on-campus/">Copenhagen's Tietgenkollegiet dorm</a>, a circular building with community kitchens, cafes, music rooms and a central courtyard. And if we could choose any gadget to take with us, it would have to be <a href="http://inhabitat.com/brilliant-device-turns-waste-paper-into-pencils/">the P&amp;P Office Waste Processor</a>, which can transform a basket full of waste paper into fully-formed pencils.</p>

In preparation, this week London officials unveiled <a href="http://inhabitat.com/londons-tower-bridge-gets-led-upgrade-for-the-queens-diamond-jubilee/">an impressive new LED light installation on the Tower Bridge</a>. The new lights, which cut the landmark's energy consumption by 40 percent, will be turned white to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee (her 60th year as monarch). Speaking of London, we also took a look at <a href="http://inhabitat.com/the-sparkling-serpentine-gallery-pavilion-by-herzog-de-meuron-and-ai-weiwei-opens-tomorrow/">the new 2012 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in Hyde Park</a>. The maze-like underground pavilion is the first collaboration between Chinese artist <a href="http://inhabitat.com/ai-weiwei-uses-wood-reclaimed-from-qing-dynasty-temples-to-create-fragile-art-installations/">Ai Weiwei</a> and architects <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/herzog-de-meuron/">Herzog &amp; de Meuron</a> since they teamed up to produce the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/beijing-birdsnest-new-pics-of-herzog-demeurons-stunning-stadium/">Bird's Nest</a> at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.<br /> <br /> The <a href="http://inhabitat.com/the-sparkling-serpentine-gallery-pavilion-by-herzog-de-meuron-and-ai-weiwei-opens-tomorrow/">Serpentine Gallery Pavilion</a> isn't the only <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/video-interview-inhabitat-interviews-the-designers-of-new-york-citys-low-line-underground-park/">subterranean architecture project</a> we've been buzzing about this week. In fact, we were amazed to report that all of the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/no-need-to-panic-but-survival-condos-apocalypse-proof-bunkers-are-now-sold-out/">apocalypse-proof condos in an underground converted nuclear missile silo in Kansas</a> have been sold. The 1,820-square-foot units were purchased for an amazing $2 million apiece. If you prefer to spend your time (and money) above ground, may be suggest your very own <a href="http://inhabitat.com/solar-powered-floating-island-is-an-off-shore-eco-retreat/">solar-powered floating eco-resort?</a> The aptly-named Solar Floating Resort sleeps six and it comes with an underwater observation room. And for the landlubber in search of a unique space to pass the time, <a href="http://inhabitat.com/circular-prefab-g-pods-are-self-pivoting-loungers-for-nomads/">feast your eyes on the spherical G-POD</a>! The sleek, prefabricated structures are made of Norwegian spruce, and they'd be perfect for rooftops and gardens.</p>

Meanwhile Google geared up to launch a "sea view" service that lets anyone <a href="http://inhabitat.com/google-dives-underwater-to-launch-sea-view-of-the-great-barrier-reef/">explore the Great Barrier Reef</a> and Makerbot launched a line of <a href="http://inhabitat.com/makerbots-3d-printed-hermit-crab-shells-are-a-fresh-solution-to-an-environmental-shortage/">colorful 3D printed shells</a> for hermit crabs. Scientists also harnessed advanced printing technology to create a new breed of realistic <a href="http://inhabitat.com/scientists-will-begin-3d-printing-dinosaur-robots/">dinosaur robots</a> and a miniature self-assembling <a href="http://inhabitat.com/harvards-pop-up-bee-robots-use-new-process-to-print-complex-machines/">robotic bee</a>, and the National academy of Sciences urged a review of the <a href="http://www.ecouterre.com/national-academies-of-sciences-urge-review-of-nanomaterials-risks-safety/">risks and safety of nanomaterials</a>.<br /><br />Green transportation also soared to astronomical new heights this week as a Japanese company announced plans to build a <a href="http://inhabitat.com/japanese-company-announces-plans-for-20000-mile-high-space-elevator/">20,000-mile-high space elevator</a> by the year 2050. Back on earth, Toyota unveiled the first teaser shots of its upcoming <a href="http://inhabitat.com/toyota-to-unveil-ft-bh-super-mini-hybrid-concept-at-geneva-motor-show/">FT-Bh mini hybrid vehicle</a>, a <a href="http://inhabitat.com/bricked-tesla-roadster-battery-launches-electric-vehicle-debate/">"bricked" Tesla Roadster</a> launched an electric vehicle debate, and we showcased the <a href="http://www.inhabitots.com/taga-is-the-ultimate-bike-stroller-combo/">Taga</a> -- the ultimate bike stroller combo. Green design also hit the slopes as Tenna, Switzerland took the wraps off the world's first <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tiny-swiss-ski-town-unveals-worlds-first-solar-wing-powered-ski-lift/">solar wing-powered ski lift</a> and William Hughes carved up the snow wearing a blazing bright <a href="http://www.ecouterre.com/william-hughess-led-snowboarding-suit-lights-up-the-nighttime-slopes/">LED snowboarding suit</a>.<br /><br />In other news, eco phone design rang loud and clear this week as AT&amp;T announced plans to place <a href="http://inhabitat.com/att-announces-it-will-start-placing-eco-labels-on-mobile-devices-this-year/">green labels</a> on mobile devices, Shikun Sun developed a <a href="http://inhabitat.com/the-drawbraille-mobile-phone-by-shikun-sun-is-a-super-smartphone-for-the-blind/">DrawBraille smartphone</a> for the blind, and a NYC architect turned defunct phone booths into <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/obsolete-nyc-phone-booths-turned-into-free-mini-libraries-by-architect-john-locke/">free mini libraries</a>. We were also wowed by several eye-opening recycled designs -- a fully functional <a href="http://inhabitat.com/cf-salicath-builds-fully-functional-tlr-camera-from-legos/">twin lens reflex LEGO camera</a> and a series of furnishings made from <a href="http://inhabitat.com/stockpile-designs-jake-wright-upcycles-decommissioned-military-ammo-into-home-decor/">decommissioned military ammunition</a>. Last but not least, we watched a gigantic <a href="http://inhabitat.com/floralis-generica-is-a-giant-metal-flower-that-blooms-daily-in-buenos-aires/">solar-powered metal flower</a> bloom in Buenos Aires, Nike created a <a href="http://www.ecouterre.com/nike-creates-prosthetic-running-sole-for-amputee-triathlete-video/">prosthetic running sole</a> for amputee triathletes, and we shined a light on Takayuki Hori's beautiful <a href="http://inhabitat.com/takayuki-hori-beautiful-x-ray-origami-animals-shine-light-on-8-endangered-species/">X-ray origami animals</a>.

This week Inhabitat got set for the holiday season as we officially launched our <a href="http://inhabitat.com/greenholidaygiftguide/">Green Gift Guide</a>, which is chock full of 21 categories and over 300 presents - including a great set of <a href="http://inhabitat.com/inhabitat-green-holiday-gift-guide-diy-gifts/">DIY projects you can make yourself</a> and a round-up of our favorite <a href="http://inhabitat.com/inhabitat-green-holiday-gift-guide-gadget-gifts/">gifts for gadget geeks</a>. Speaking of high-tech gizmos, we also showcased several amazing examples of cutting-edge robotics as researchers developed a new breed of <a href="http://inhabitat.com/researchers-developing-cyborg-insects-that-draw-energy-from-their-own-wings/">disaster detecting cyborg insects</a> and Otherlab created a line of <a href="http://inhabitat.com/otherlab-creates-cool-inflatable-robots-that-can-walk-on-water/">lightweight inflatable robots</a> that can walk on water. Scientists also successfully completed the first round of trials on a new type of <a href="http://inhabitat.com/next-gen-contact-lenses-could-send-emails-directly-to-your-eyes/">contact lens</a> that could one day send emails directly to your eyes, and NASA announced that the new <a href="http://inhabitat.com/new-mars-curiosity-science-laboratory-will-be-nuclear-powered-not-solar-powered/">Mars Curiosity Science Laboratory</a> will be powered by nuclear energy instead of solar.

<div style="text-align: center;">
	<br />
	<img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/audi.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px; height: 438px; width: 600px;" /></div>
It was a big week for green cars, as <a href="http://inhabitat.com/">Inhabitat</a> scoured the floors of the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/index.php?s=LA+Auto+Show">LA Auto Show</a> to search for the latest and greatest in green auto design and innovation. We were excited to check out <a href="http://inhabitat.com/exclusive-photos-audis-hybrid-diesel-e-tron-spyder-concept-at-the-la-auto-show/">Audi's hybrid-diesel E-Tron Spyder</a> concept car, Croatia's first electric vehicle prototype the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/exclusive-photos-croatias-first-ev-prototype-the-dok-ing-xd-at-the-la-auto-show/">DOK-ING XD</a>, and Honda's hotly anticipated 2013 electric version of their popular <a href="http://inhabitat.com/exclusive-pics-honda-unveils-the-2013-fit-ev-at-the-2011-la-auto-show/">Fit</a>. Honda also made waves at the west coast auto show with their <a href="http://inhabitat.com/honda-civic-natural-gas-named-2012-green-car-of-the-year-at-the-la-auto-show/">Civic Natural Gas</a> car, which took home the title of 'Green Car of the Year' -- the Civic is the cleanest running internal combustion car certified by the EPS. Meanwhile, Ford announced that their EVOS plug-in hybrid will be hitting the market next year, <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/flykly-electric-bicycles-are-the-greenest-vehicle-to-cruise-the-new-york-city-streets/">FlyKly's ultra-modern electric bikes</a> have become a choice ride in New York City, a German museum decided to <a href="http://inhabitat.com/german-museum-recreates-the-worlds-oldest-electric-car/">recreate an operable version the world's oldest electric car</a>, and the US Navy successfully <a href="http://inhabitat.com/u-s-navys-self-defense-test-ship-successfully-completes-voyage-using-biofuel-blend/">sent a test-ship out on a 117 hour voyage using a 50 percent algae-derived fuel</a>.<br />
<br />
There were also some exciting announcements in clean energy technology this week, including a recent report completed by leading scientists that predict <a href="http://inhabitat.com/scientists-predict-giant-orbiting-power-plants-could-power-the-earth-by-2041/">giant orbiting solar power plants could supply all the earth's energy needs by 2041</a>. We also learned that France will open <a href="http://inhabitat.com/worlds-largest-tidal-energy-farm-to-power-4000-french-homes-in-2012/">the world's largest tidal energy farm in 2012</a>, and GE will provide the turbines for a <a href="http://inhabitat.com/ge-to-provide-turbines-for-100-million-mongolian-wind-farm/">$100 million wind farm in Mongolia</a>. Also for Mongolia, a local geo-engineering firm is making plans to battle the capital's scorching hot summers by cooling it down with <a href="http://inhabitat.com/worlds-largest-chunk-of-manmade-ice-to-cool-mongolias-capital-city/">gigantic manmade chunks of ice</a> that mimic naleds. London's audacious mayor came up with an equally ambitious idea -- his plan is to curb pollution by spraying the city's roads with <a href="http://inhabitat.com/calcium-based-adhesive-applied-to-london-roads-to-prevent-air-pollution/">a sticky calcium-based adhesive able to catch airborne pollutants</a>. We also got the inside scoop from Panasonic's Energy Solution Business Director, Haruyuki Ishio, on the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/interview-panasonics-haruyuki-ishio-gives-us-the-inside-scoop-about-fujisawa-sustainable-smart-town/">futuristic eco-city</a> that is being planned for Fujisawa, Japan.

	<img border="1" hspace="4" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/kingdom-tower-dubai.jpg" vspace="4" /></div>
It was a monumental week for the field of architecture as Inhabitat brought you a first look at the coming <a href="http://inhabitat.com/adrian-smith-gordon-gill-announces-it-will-design-the-mile-high-kingdom-tower-in-dubai/">world's largest skyscraper</a> designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill, and we saw a sparkling wave of <a href="http://inhabitat.com/wastelandscape-65000-discarded-cds-form-a-sea-of-metallic-dunes-in-paris/">65,000 discarded compact discs</a> sweep through the streets of Paris. We also learned that plans for Jean Nouvel's massive <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/plans-for-jean-nouvels-massive-moma-death-spire-have-been-revived/">MoMA 'Death Spire'</a> has been revitalized, and we took a look inside an <a href="http://inhabitat.com/gms-grande-palladium-insane-mumbai-office-looks-like-its-straight-out-of-star-wars/">incredible Mumbai office</a> that looks like something straight out of Star Wars. We also brought you an <a href="http://inhabitat.com/video-inhabitat-interviews-metropol-parasol-architect-juergen-mayer-h/">exclusive video interview with Juergen Mayer H.</a> -- the architect behind the world's largest wooden structure in Seville, Spain.<br />
<br />
