<p>US Cellular's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/18/us-cellular-wp8/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">been promising</a> a WP8 handset for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/29/u-s-cellular-pledges-to-carry-windows-phone-8-devices-in-the-fa/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">quite some time</a> now, and it looks like the company's about to deliver exactly that. As you might recall, US Cellular's last <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/WindowsPhone/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Windows Phone</a> offering was the entry-level <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/29/zte-render-for-us-cellular/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">ZTE Render</a> which ran WP7.5 (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Tango/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Tango</a>). We recently obtained promo materials for an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/04/samsung-ativ-odyssey-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">ATIV Odyssey</a> with US Cellular branding. This mid-range Samsung device, which is currently <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/23/ativ-odyssey-hitting-verizon-january-24th-for-50/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">available on Verizon</a>, packs a 4-inch WVGA <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/SuperAMOLED/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Super AMOLED</a> display, 1.5GHz dual-core <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/SnapdragonS4/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Snapdragon S4</a> processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of built-in storage (with microSD expansion), LTE and NFC support, plus a five-megapixel autofocus camera with flash. While none of this is official (yet), we fully expect <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/USCellular/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">US Cellular</a> to make a proper announcement <em>real soon now</em>. Until then, check out the gallery below for some of the aforementioned promo material. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ativ-odyssey-for-us-cellular-promo-materials/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">ATIV Odyssey for US Cellular promo materials</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ativ-odyssey-for-us-cellular-promo-materials/5926673?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/ativodysseyuscellularpromo05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ativ-odyssey-for-us-cellular-promo-materials/5926674?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/ativodysseyuscellularpromo06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ativ-odyssey-for-us-cellular-promo-materials/5926669?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/ativodysseyuscellularpromo01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ativ-odyssey-for-us-cellular-promo-materials/5926670?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/ativodysseyuscellularpromo02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ativ-odyssey-for-us-cellular-promo-materials/5926671?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/ativodysseyuscellularpromo03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/30/huawei-windows-phone-8-render/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Huawei Windows Phone appears in render, could be the Ascend W2" data-src-height="450" data-src-width="245" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/huawei-evleaks-2.jpg" /></a></p>

<p>It feels almost unfaithful to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/07/huawei-ascend-w1-hands-on-the-companys-first-windows-phone-8/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Ascend W1</a> to be looking at a potential sequel <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/09/huawei-w1-wp8-smartphone-on-sale-walmart-usa/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">already</a>, but that's what <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/evleaks?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><em>evleaks</em></a> claims this is. How he got the image we have no idea, and neither do we have any price or specs to go with it -- it's just this lone render of a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/huawei?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Huawei</a> handset running <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/windowsphone8?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Windows Phone 8</a> in Chinese. There was actually a previous leak back in April (shown after the break), which also purported to be the Ascend W2 and which <em>did </em>come with some detail: a 720p 4.3-inch display, Snapdragon S4 chip, 8MP rear camera and 1GB RAM for $289. However, today's picture fails to match up with the earlier one in a number of respects, not least in the shape of the bottom edge and in the position of the front camera / sensor opening next to the earpiece, which means the only certainty here is that they can't both be right.</p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/21/nokia-brings-lumia-925-for-t-mobile-to-ctia-2013-we-go-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Nokia brings Lumia 925 for TMobile to CTIA 2013, we go handson" data-src-height="411" data-src-width="619" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/nokialumia925tmolead01.jpg" /></a></p>

<p>We've already spent <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/14/nokia-lumia-925-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">some quality time</a> with Nokia's handsome <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Lumia925/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Lumia 925</a> and while it's no secret the company's Windows Phone flagship is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/14/nokia-lumia-925-is-coming-to-t-mobile/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">coming to the US</a> courtesy of T-Mobile, we'd never actually seen the carrier-branded model -- until now, that is. Nokia brought T-Mobile's version of the handset to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/CTIA2013/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">CTIA 2013</a> where we took it for a brief spin. As you'd expect, the phone is identical to its global twin save for the operator's logo below the capacitive button and the radios which support T-Mobile's bands. Unfortunately, the Lumia 925 we played with was not final, so the software was off limits. In terms of hardware, it features the same 4.5-inch 1,280 x 768 AMOLED screen, 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB of storage and 8.7-megapixel camera with OIS. This is definitely one of Nokia's most attractive designs yet, and we're looking forward to getting our hands on a review unit soon. In the meantime, why not check out the gallery below? <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-lumia-925-for-t-mobile-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nokia Lumia 925 for T-Mobile hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-lumia-925-for-t-mobile-hands-on/5900314?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/nokialumia925tmo01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-lumia-925-for-t-mobile-hands-on/5900315?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/nokialumia925tmo02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-lumia-925-for-t-mobile-hands-on/5900316?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/nokialumia925tmo03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-lumia-925-for-t-mobile-hands-on/5900317?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/nokialumia925tmo04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-lumia-925-for-t-mobile-hands-on/5900318?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/nokialumia925tmo05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

<p>YouTube only recently came to Windows Phone 8 as a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/07/windows-phone-8-youtube-update/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">full-fledged app</a>, but its availability may be short-lived. According to documents obtained by <em>The Verge</em>, Google has requested that Microsoft remove the app from it Windows Phone Store -- and disable installations on devices -- immediately. The reason? Apparently the app didn't get Goog's stamp of approval before going live, and it blocks the ads that typically run on YouTube. Naturally, ads are an important source of revenue for both Google and no shortage of third parties, so Mountain View may not be out of line for crying foul. And that's not the only strike against Redmond: according to the cease and desist letter, YouTube on WP8 lets users download videos, in addition to streaming content that's been restricted on certain devices. Oh, and all the above-mentioned issues violate YouTube's Terms of Service. Google is giving MS until May 22nd to remove the app -- we're sure this isn't the last you'll hear on this subject.</p>

<p><strong>Update</strong>: Microsoft has responded. We have the full statement from a Microsoft spokesperson after the break.</p>

<p>Microsoft's Joe Belfiore has just tweeted that, at some point today, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/28/bbc-iplayer-reaching-windows-phone-within-weeks/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">BBC iPlayer</a> is coming to Windows Phone 8. It's been a long road getting to this point, as the BBC's and Microsoft's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/20/bbc-no-iplayer-on-windows-phone/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">conflicting technologies </a>don't play nicely with each other -- with this version being a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/05/bbc-iplayer-coming-to-windows-phone/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">browser-based shortcut</a> rather than a fully-featured app. Still, for the legion of British Windows Phone users dying for their <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/12/doctor-who-gets-an-extra-british-3d-special-for-its-50th-birthday/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><em>Doctor Who</em></a> fix while on the go, something is far better than nothing.</p>

<p><strong>Update:</strong> And it's official, so head down to the Windows Store link below to start downloading.</p>

<p>Perhaps to celebrate <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/07/skydrive-celebrates-250-million-users/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">passing</a> the 250 million user mark, SkyDrive is rolling out an update which introduces some nifty time-saving features. Now, you'll be able to view all your photos -- across folders and albums -- in a timeline view, with images grouped by event and date for easy searching. There are also filmstrip and slideshow modes, and, according to Microsoft's <em>Inside SkyDrive </em>blog, photo-upload times have been improved at least twofold. The update brings a few other goodies too: full-resolution camera uploads for all Windows Phone 8 devices worldwide, and new thumbnails for PowerPoint and Word files. The update will begin rolling out today and should make its way to all users within 48 hours.</p>

<p>Huawei and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/23/huawei-loses-interest-in-us-market-for-its-telecom-equipment-aft/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">United States government</a> may <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/08/huawei-and-zte-congress-report-draft/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">have</a> their <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/09/huawei-zte-respond-to-congress/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">differences</a>, but here's something we can all agree on: Walmart's going to sell whatever it darn well pleases. Including, mind you, Huawei's first Windows Phone 8 smartphone. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/07/huawei-ascend-w1-hands-on-the-companys-first-windows-phone-8/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">W1</a> -- which has made <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/26/huawei-ascend-w1-o2-launch/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">inroads</a> in multiple <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/04/microsoft-4afrika-initiative-huawei-white-space/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">markets</a> already -- is heading to Yankee soil, with shipments expected to begin "this month" at Walmart.com and at select Walmart stores. For those in need of a refresher, it'll pack a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, a 4-inch IPS touchpanel, 1.7GB of user-available internal storage (expandable to 32GB via microSD card), a 5 megapixel rear camera (with a 0.3MP shooter on the front) and the latest iteration of Microsoft's mobile OS. Strangely, Huawei nor Walmart are saying what the damage will be, but it'll reportedly be priced "competitively" on a prepaid, no-contract plan.</p>

<p>It's not uncommon for an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/25/nokia-lumia-event-may-14/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">as yet announced</a> phone to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/05/nokia-lumia-928-spied-for-verizon/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">pop up on Twitter</a>, or via an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/02/nokia-lumia-928-possibly-seen-in-verizons-system/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">insider leak</a>. But a physical billboard? That takes some doing. If this image -- spotted out in the wild -- is to be believed, Nokia's Lumia 928 is as real as the day is long. The Verizon handset shown certainly fits the images we've already seen, and the low-light boast will stoke the coals of any Xenon or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/pureview/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PureView</a> rumors for sure. However, this spot is hardly Times Square, so until we see something a little more concrete, Lumia fans on Big Red will have to keep the faith <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/31/nokia-lumia-822-for-verizon-hands-on-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">with that 822</a>.</p>

The response?</p><p> "When you think about the world, there are markets where operators are subsidizing phones, and then there are markets where they aren't. We're seeing the most success in markets where operators are <em>not</em> subsidizing the phone. What happens in the subsidized market -- the market that Apple and Samsung have chosen <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/04/apple-samsung-99-percent-profits/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">to focus on</a> -- is that the best innovation happens in the $650 product that's sold for $200. To that end, the company's booth showcases several games that highlight cross-platform development and middleware. Now that WP8 and Windows 8 share the same NT kernel, DirectX APIs and tools, it's easier than ever to write games that use the same code base for both platforms. Microsoft is sweetening the deal with a few significant middleware partnerships -- <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Unity/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Unity</a>, Marmalade and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Havok/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Havok</a>, to be specific. We talked with Larry Lieberman, Senior Product Manager for Windows Phone development, who was kind enough to explain what these partnerships mean for developers and to give us a tour of the games. Hit the break for our hands-on video. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/windows-phone-middleware-at-gdc-2013-0/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Windows Phone middleware demo at GDC 2013</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/windows-phone-middleware-at-gdc-2013-0/5773788?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/windowsphonegdc01-1364457051_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/windows-phone-middleware-at-gdc-2013-0/5773798?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/windowsphonegdc10-1364457094_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/windows-phone-middleware-at-gdc-2013-0/5773789?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/windowsphonegdc02-1364457055_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/windows-phone-middleware-at-gdc-2013-0/5773795?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/windowsphonegdc07-1364457079_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/windows-phone-middleware-at-gdc-2013-0/5773794?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/windowsphonegdc06-1364457074_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

After launching last October on Windows 8, the outfit is showing Microsoft's <i>other</i> major OS a bit of love today. Babbel is bringing its 11 language learning programs to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/windows-phone-8-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Windows Phone 8</a>, with the apps scheduled to hit the 'Education' segment of the Windows Phone Store any moment now. For those who've yet to give it a whirl, Babbel uses a mix of repetition, visual cues, spelling exercises and voice recognition, and it does a pretty stellar job of segmenting things into digestible lessons for those who only have five or ten minutes at a time to spare.</p><p> The apps themselves are free to download, with a company spokesperson explaining to us that the WP8 builds "are mainly vocabulary trainers with 3,000 words broken down into themed lessons." Ideally, the phone apps would supplement a user's learning on their main platform (iPad or desktop). So, at $0.00, your last remaining excuse to not understand what the locals are chatting about in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/14/lensbaby-edge-80-optic-tilt-shift-lens-review-gallery-sample-shots/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Moorea</a> has been obliterated. He was kind enough to give us an update on the state of Microsoft's mobile OS, which has apparently experienced a four-fold increase in sales since version 8 launched last fall and is <a href="http://www.kantarworldpanel.com/Global/News/Smartphone-Competition-Hots-Up">taking share away</a> from Android in the UK. We discussed the delightful user experience provided by lower-end <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/WindowsPhone8/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Windows Phone 8</a> handsets like Nokia's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/07/nokia-lumia-620-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Lumia 620</a> and asked how Microsoft plans to satisfy power users at the higher-end of the spectrum who are still missing critical features such as proper notifications, quick settings and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/CalDAV/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">CalDAV</a> / <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/CardDAV/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">CardDAV</a> support (to name a few). It's clear that the company's aware of these shortcomings and is working to remedy most of them in a future release. We also talked about the ecosystem, what Microsoft is doing to improve app quality, how it meshes with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Windows8/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Windows 8</a> / <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/WindowsRT/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">RT</a> and whether the company is looking to expand its partnership beyond existing device manufacturers. Look for our full video interview after the break.</p>

Announced in a blurb <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/25/nokia-mwc2013-liveblog/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">here at Mobile World Congress</a>, the Windows Phone 8 handset will connect to T-Mob's HSPA+ network, and the carrier swears that it'll "embody a range of high-end features at an affordable price." Of course, additional details -- including device availability and specifics on pricing -- are being kept under wraps until a heretofore undefined date. We'll be sure to share more as we hear of it.</p>

The inexpensive smartphone actually packs a pretty powerful punch for its price point, offering the same dual-core 1GHz Snapdragon CPU found in the Lumia 720 also announced today. It also features 512MB RAM, a 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480) IPS LCD display and 1,430mAh battery. As we've come to expect on Lumia devices, it comes included with Nokia services like the full suite of Here Maps, Nokia Music and several lenses such as Cinemagraph and panorama. The 520 will come in five color options: cyan, yellow, red, black and white. Snap-on covers will also be available for anyone interested in swapping hues day-to-day. The $183 phone begins its quest for dominance in China later this quarter, and shortly afterward it will make its way to Europe, the rest of Asia and T-Mobile in the US. The company has also revealed O2's pricing for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/06/nokia-lumia-620-hands-on-249-for-windows-phone-8/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Lumia 620</a>, the handset that'll bring Windows Phone 8 to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/05/nokia-lumia-620/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">cash-strapped masses</a>. It's available from today on the oxygen-themed network, setting you back &pound;149.99 or free on contracts priced over &pound;18.50. Normally, the interchangeable back plates would cost around &pound;20, but O2 is offering buyers a choice of a yellow, orange, green, white or cyan model for free.</p><p> You'll also be able to pick up the quirky handset from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ThreeUK/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">ThreeUK</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/virgin+media/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Virgin Media</a> today, although neither has opened up about pricing just yet. Vodafone has announced that it'll launch the phone on February 6th with a choice of white or black covers, while EE has yet to commit to carrying the handset. If you saw removable covers and hoped that the 620 would benefit from the same wireless charging plates we saw in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/12/nokia-lumia-820-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">820</a>, we've got some bad news -- Nokia has said it's not likely to happen.</p>

Google has confirmed that it will allow <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/windows+phone/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Windows Phones</a> to access Google Sync services for an additional six months, ending on July 31st. This move will allow Microsoft a little extra breathing room, giving the company more time to determine how to best resolve the concern that will affect countless Gmail fans that currently use Windows Phone as their primary driver; according to a blog post (linked below), Microsoft has indeed confirmed that it's working on building CalDAV and CardDAV support into Windows Phone.</p><p> We reached out to Google and received this confirmation: "As announced last year, our plan is to end support for new device connections using Google Sync starting January 30, 2013. With the launch of CardDAV, it's now possible to build a seamless sync experience using open protocols (IMAP, CalDAV and CardDAV) for Gmail, Google Calendar and Contacts. We'll start rolling out this change as planned across all platforms but will continue to support Google Sync for Windows Phone until July 31, 2013."</p>

Today there's great news for users of Redmond's mobile OS, however, as the Fire maker has announced an update that brings some much-needed support for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/windows-phone-8-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Windows Phone 8</a> to the app, which should pair well with the company's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/amazon-audio-whispersync/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Whispersync</a> tech and the extensive <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/05/amazon-kindle-ebook-store-spanish/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">e-book repertoire</a> it has to offer. There might be one caveat, though: early adopters of the refreshed <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Kindle/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Kindle</a> app have said it's facing some crashing issues and, in some cases, even having trouble launching -- a few folks, meanwhile, have mentioned that it's best to do a clean install rather than update the previous version in order to avoid any woes. The link to grab the application is down below, and do use the comments section to let us know how the process turned out for you.</p>

Currently available in black at the official online store, this dual-core, WCDMA 900/2100-flavored W1 is priced at &yen;1,599 or about $260, making it the cheapest <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/windowsphone8?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Windows Phone 8</a> device you can get in China -- probably something that will help address Huawei's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/21/huawei-2012-financials/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">smartphone penetration problem</a>. Better yet, placing an order now will knock &yen;100 (about $16) off the order but only while stocks last, so interested buyers better start calling their pals in China soon, especially before they shut down for Chinese New Year early next month!</p><p> The title of cheapest WP8 device in China was previously held by Nokia's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/12/nokia-lumia-620-820-and-920-made-official-for-china/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">&yen;1,999</a> (about $320)<span> Lumia 620</span><span>, though in the US it is available for </span><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/06/nokia-lumia-620-hands-on-249-for-windows-phone-8/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">just $249</a>. Given the bigger screen and battery, the W1 might be a better buy, but we shall reserve our final judgement until we get to play with it properly. Meanwhile, somewhere in Redmond, Steve Ballmer is closely observing with a massive grin.</p>

Most notably, LastPass now offers support for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/windows-phone-8-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Windows Phone 8</a>, while those running an older variant of Microsoft's mobile OS can keep using the app as they have been since its early days on the platform. Other improvements and enhancements include a completely overhauled user interface, which should make it easier for users to navigate within the application, as well as easily find their most preferred sites by sorting alphabetically or adding them to the "Favorites" panel. The new version of LastPass is up for download now, so go and tap that source link if you're looking to keep those (many) passwords of yours all tidied up in one place.</p>

Sometime in the first quarter, if you're living in the UK -- O2 just announced the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/AscendW1/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Ascend W1</a> as its first Windows Phone 8 handset. <p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/08/qualcomm-paul-jacobs-windows-phone/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Image" data-src-height="532" data-src-width="800" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/qualcommces2013-0094-1357676431.jpg" /></a></p><p> This shouldn't come as a surprise after Steve Ballmer crashed the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/qualcomm/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Qualcomm</a> CES <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/07/live-from-qualcomms-ces-2013-keynote/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">keynote</a> yesterday, but at a follow-up briefing earlier today, the latter's CEO Paul Jacobs reiterated his support for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/windowsphone/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Windows Phone</a>. The exec said "it's too early to call the game" on Microsoft's mobile OS, and emphasized that he "never counted Microsoft out" as it has a lot of resources plus benefits, especially with the tie-in with its enterprise software and Xbox. "It is growing, they are gaining traction. When you use the devices they work well. That's pretty key," said Jacobs. Well, we're certainly fans of the Snapdragon-powered <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/8x/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">HTC 8X</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/lumia920/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Lumia 920</a>, so it'll be up to Microsoft to convince more consumers.</p><p> When asked whether the latest Snapdragon flagship is overshadowed by NVIDIA's Tegra 4 in terms of graphics performance, Jacobs insisted that is a very wrong assumption, and he's actually very confident about his own product's capability courtesy of his in-house graphics engineers. SVP of product management <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/08/qualcomm-interview/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Raj Talluri</a> added that even the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/07/qualcomm-snapdragon-800-and-600-chips/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Snapdragon 600</a> has a much higher CPU and GPU performance than both Tegra 4 and Intel's Clover Trail+. Obviously we'll know the truth when the consumer devices eventually land on our hands later this year.</p>

Using SmartGlass, <em>Halo 4</em> players can normally access their stats and other info about their android supersoldier using the long-established Waypoint service -- except for Windows Phone 8 users, apparently. A forum thread dating back to <em>Halo 4</em>'s November launch highlights the issue -- as Xbox.com forum user "Scion Eon" puts it: "Whenever I try to log into SmartGlass on my phone while playing <em>Halo 4</em>, I am immediately greeted with a message that says 'Your device is missing certain required features.'" As it turns out, Mr. Eon isn't the only one experiencing said connectivity issues -- specific to Windows Phone 8 devices -- and Microsoft's aware of the situation.</p><p> "We are aware that there is an issue with the Xbox SmartGlass experience for 'Halo Waypoint' on Windows Phone 8 devices, which may prevent users from accessing <em>Halo 4</em> player stats," a Microsoft rep told us this afternoon. Thankfully, Redmond's also taking care of a solution. "We are actively working on a fix and expect to have a solution within the coming weeks. We appreciate your patience as this gets resolved and apologize for any inconvenience this causes," the statement reads. Of course, should you want to access <em>Halo 4</em>'s Waypoint functionality on SmartGlass before that fix, you can always use Microsoft's competitor's devices. But then who'd do that?</p><p> [Thanks Colin!]</p>

There's no push mechanism for getting this refresh, though, so those with a WP8 device will want to check for it via the Settings menu. What's changed, exactly? According to <em>WMPoweruser</em>, maps have improved detail and traffic info. If you've downloaded the update, tell us about it in the comments below.</p>

It certainly shouldn't have. But if it did, it's a hindrance the company spared its Windows Phone 8 line. HTC decided two was enough, and who are we to argue? It was back in October that we <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/htc-8x-review-windows-phone-8s-compact-flagship/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">handled the flagship</a>, but now its smaller, cheaper companion has arrived. At around &pound;230 (about $370) SIM-free, this potentially represents one of the best value Windows Phone options around at the moment (at least in <a href="http://HTC confirms the Windows Phone 8S will not be coming to the US">Europe and Asia</a>). Sure, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/06/nokia-lumia-620-hands-on-249-for-windows-phone-8/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nokia's Lumia 620</a> will soon be gunning for some of its market share, but for now it's got relatively little competition. So far, Windows Phone 8 has seen plenty of entries running dual-core, 1.5GHz Snapdragon chips. This time we're looking at a slower clock speed (1GHz) and some more muted specs across the board (more on this later). Given that, did HTC get the budget-to-features balance right here? Read on to find out.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/htc-8s-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">HTC 8S review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/htc-8s-review/5501994?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/jtmg5786800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="HTC 8S review" title="HTC 8S review" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/htc-8s-review/5501995?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/jtmg5817800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="HTC 8S review" title="HTC 8S review" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/htc-8s-review/5501996?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/jtmg5826800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/htc-8s-review/5501997?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/jtmg5839800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/htc-8s-review/5501998?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/jtmg5840800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>
