<p>Amazon confirmed as early as last September that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/27/amazon-kindle-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Kindle Keyboard</a> would be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/amazon-the-kindle-keyboard-is-sticking-around/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">sticking around</a>, but much like your favorite dessert, nothing is forever. The Kindle Keyboard 3G is now showing as unavailable or out of stock at Amazon's site, as well as at Best Buy and Target. Of course, the last of those has had this here device on sale for what feels like forever, but it's still somewhat sad to see it come to the end of its road. It's entirely possible that the company's Lab126 is cooking up a replacement alongside those <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/09/amazon-developing-smartphone-with-3d-display/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">mythical smartphones</a>, but it's unclear if such a conceptual piece is on the immediate horizon. We've reached out to Amazon regarding the disappearance, and we'll be sure to update this post as we learn more.</p>

<p>[Thanks, John]</p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/17/amazon-lands-prime-instant-video-exclusives-for-5-nbcu-shows/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Amazon lands Prime Instant Video exclusives for five NBCUniversal shows" data-src-height="340" data-src-width="620" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/hannibal-nbc.jpg" /></a></p>

<p>Amazon is still determined to snag <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/01/amazon-scores-downton-abbey-as-a-subscription-streaming-exclusive/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">every</a> TV <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/13/amazon-expands-cbs-content-on-prime-instant-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">exclusive</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/27/amazon-corrals-fxs-justified-prime-instant-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">possible</a>, and it just scored one of its better deals -- or at least, one of the more forward-thinking. It now has the sole unlimited subscription streaming rights to the previous seasons of five NBCUniversal shows. The highlight could be <em>Hannibal</em>, which will reach the service later this year; gamers may also like the crossover SyFy series <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/15/must-see-hdtv-april-15th-21st/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><em>Defiance</em></a>, which should be ready in early 2014. Those who just can't wait to stream something will get their fill through exclusives for <em>Covert Affairs</em>, <em>Grimm</em> and <em>Suits</em>, all of which are in the catalog today. Amazon isn't completely shutting out rivals like Netflix, however: its expanded NBCU deal includes regular deals for <em>Alphas</em>, <em>Eureka</em>, <em>Smash</em>, <em>Warehouse 13</em> and a collection of children's shows destined for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/05/amazon-kindle-freetime-unlimited/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Kindle FreeTime Unlimited</a>. While we'd prefer that there be as few exclusives as possible, there's no question that some Prime members will feel better about springing for that $79 yearly fee.<br />
<br />

<p>Amazon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/amazoncloudplayer/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Cloud Player</a> may have been accessible on PCs through browsers <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/29/amazon-cloud-player-goes-live-streams-music-on-your-computer-an/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">since its launch</a>, but today Bezos &amp; Co. have given the service a desktop app of its own. Once installed, the free program will detect and add music from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/24/apple-marks-a-decade-of-itunes-through-an-in-app-timeline/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iTunes</a> and Windows Media Player to its library, and continue doing so as new songs are purchased from other storefronts. Naturally, tunes bought from the firm can be streamed and downloaded through the application, and even exported to iTunes. While there's no sign of Linux support, the company says it's working on a version just for Mac users. If you count yourself in Microsoft's camp, hit the neighboring source link for the download.</p>

<p>Google's lawyers visited the Second Circuit Court of Appeals last week for a polite conversation with three judges and attorneys from the Authors Guild. You remember -- the book-scanning thing? Yes, the case is 7 years old and still unresolved. The Circuit Court is just a way station in a longer journey -- at issue is whether the Authors Guild's class action suit should be broken apart, forcing authors and publishers to confront Google individually.</p>

<blockquote class="quote left">
<p>Google is going to win this thing eventually. If that makes Google evil, it is a necessary evil.</p>
</blockquote>

<p>The bigger question is about the lawfulness of Google's digital library quest, and the legitimacy of the Guild's copyright charges and request for damages. There are points of similarity to the music industry's litigation saga. And major differences. Google is going to win this thing eventually. If that makes Google evil, it is a necessary evil.</p>

This news comes from <em>The Digital Reader</em>, which discovered the acquisition via new filings from the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce (Amazon also confirmed the news). <p>Forget <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/08/engadget-primed-bitcoin/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Bitcoin</a>: Amazon's got a digital currency of its own, known as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/05/amazon-coins/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Coins</a>, coming to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/19/amazon-kindle-fire-hd-8.9-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Kindle Fire</a> right on schedule. The virtual money, which was originally announced back in February, is now ready to go for anyone who frequents the Amazon Appstore or uses a Kindle Fire to purchase apps and games. Bezos &amp; Co. is willing to throw in a bit of an investment to get you started, as the online retailer will hook up existing and new users with 500 free coins -- a value of $5. Need more than that? Head to the More Coverage link below to grab as many coins as fits your fancy. A 10 percent discount awaits those who purchase in bulk, which adds a tad more incentive to go all-in on the new service.</p>

Amazon certainly doesn't mind, as its new iOS version of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/01/amazon-cloud-drive-photos-android-app/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Cloud Drive Photos</a> is built expressly for the sake of uploading shots and viewing them online. Like the Android version, there's no editing or other special tricks -- social network sharing is about the only notable extra. Still, it might be worth grabbing the app if your Cloud Drive space isn't living up to its potential.</p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/09/amazon-developing-smartphone-with-3d-display/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Amazon reportedly developing smartphone with 3D display" data-src-height="450" data-src-width="600" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/htcevo3dreviewlead04-1308138552.jpg" /></a></p>

<p>Remember the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/15/htc-evo-3d-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">EVO 3D</a>? Swap out the HTC logo for an Amazon one, and you just might be onto something. According to a new <i>Wall Street Journal</i> report, one of the world's most famed forkers of Android is looking to expand its mobile portfolio by adding the one crucial device it lacks: a phone. As the story goes, the company has been toiling on a pair of smartphones as well as an "audio-only streaming device," all to "expand its reach beyond its Kindle Fire line of tablet computers." If you'll recall, we've heard that Amazon was dabbling in similar works since <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/10/report-amazon-building-prototype-hardware-other-than-kindle/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">at least 2010</a>, but the notion of expanding the Amazon ecosystem is now more pertinent. One of those phones is a higher-end device that offers up a glasses-free 3D display -- it's bruited that it would use "retina-tracking technology" to enable visuals that "seem to float above the screen like a [<em><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/16/tupac-hologram-performs-coachella-2012/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Tupac</a>?</em>] hologram." In fact, that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/04/nyt-samsung-galaxy-s-iv-will-tout-eye-based-scrolling/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">eye-scrolling technology</a> that was initially rumored to be a part of the Galaxy S4 may instead make its debut on Amazon hardware.</p>

<p>Of course, rumors of an Amazon phone <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/17/foxconn-reportedly-manufacturing-amazon-smartphone/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">have been running</a> just about as long as rumors of a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/09/htc-first-with-facebook-home-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Facebook phone</a>, but it seems that the company is (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/10/report-amazon-building-prototype-hardware-other-than-kindle/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">still</a>) making a very concerted effort to further expand into the hardware arena. We're told that the prototypes are being nurtured within Amazon's Lab126 facility in Cupertino, "where each of the devices have been under development, the efforts are known as Project A, B, C and D, or collectively as the Alphabet Projects." If all goes well, Amazon could release at least some of these products in the coming months, but there's also the chance that every last one of 'em could be "shelved because of performance, financial or other concerns." Come to think of it, it's been a hot minute since Amazon <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/28/live-from-amazons-tablet-event-in-nyc/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">threw a launch party</a> for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/live-from-amazons-santa-monica-press-conference/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">anything</a> -- what say we change that, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/12/amazon-kindle-fire-hd-paperwhite-hardware-no-profit/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Jeff</a>?</p>

<p>Select Ford owners with Android phones have been rockin' out with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/29/amazon-cloud-player-goes-live-streams-music-on-your-computer-an/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Amazon Cloud Player</a> and their in-dash Sync systems for the better part of three months. Now, iPhone and iPod touch users are invited to join in on the fun. The latest version of Amazon's app for iOS, 2.1.0, enables wireless streaming and control with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/07/ford-opens-applink-developer-program/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Ford's AppLink platform</a>. The service joins a handful of competitors, including Spotify, which announced its own <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/25/spotify-ford-sync-applink/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">compatible app</a> in late February. The refreshed iOS app also brings playlist and VoiceOver updates, so even if you don't drive a Ford, it might be worth the download. You can snag it right now at the source link below.</p>

<p>Two can play the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/05/bn-cuts-nook-hd-prices-mothers-day/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">discounted-tablet-for-Mother's-Day</a> game. Just a day after Barnes &amp; Noble slashed Nook tablet prices across the board, Amazon has cut the prices of the 7-inch <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/11/amazon-kindle-fire-hd-review-7-inch/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Kindle Fire HD</a> to $179 (16GB) and $209 (32GB) for the occasion. Use the FIRE4MOM code at checkout until May 12th and you'll pocket $20 that could be better spent on flowers... or apps, for that matter. The sale isn't as far ranging as we've seen at the rival bookstore, but those whose moms thrive on Amazon Prime will likely be happy.</p>

<p class="p1">Amazon let its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/17/amazons-appstore-prepares-to-expand-international-availability/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">world domination plans</a> be known last month when it asked developers to start submitting apps to line its virtual displays in more countries. While China was notably absent from immediate expansion plans, Amazon launched its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/amazonappstore/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Appstore</a> there during the weekend, opening the doors to one of the biggest mobile device markets. As <em>Reuters</em> notes, the Google Play store is available in China, but only serves up free material, whereas Amazon's Appstore has a selection of both free and paid software available for users. While the company launched its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/13/amazon-releases-kindle-apps-and-e-books-into-china/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">e-book store and e-reader apps</a> in China last December, devices are still waiting for their ticket over. Now, with the release of the Appstore, we suspect it's only a matter of time before the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/30/amazon-kindle-paperwhite-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Kindle</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/11/amazon-kindle-fire-hd-review-7-inch/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Fire</a> ranges make fashionably late appearances.</p>

<p>Acer's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/22/acer-iconia-w3-reportedly-leaks/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Iconia W3 tablet</a> hasn't been formally announced, but that hasn't stopped <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Amazon/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Amazon</a> from giving the TBA product a shiny new home on its website. The page appears to be a bit incomplete, with the summary listing an "1.5 GHz Apple A4" in the processor field, which we can't imagine is correct. The product description below might be a bit more on point, though. There you'll find a dual-core Atom Z2760 processor, an 8.1-inch 1280 x 800-pixel CrystalBrite LCD display, integrated graphics with 64MB of memory, 32 gigs of internal storage, 2GB of RAM, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, 2-megapixel front- and rear-facing cameras, and a two-cell 3,500mAh battery, keeping the Windows 8 tab powered for up to 8 hours. There's no word on when the 1.1-pound slate is set to ship (or when it'll make an official debut, for that matter), but assuming the Amazon web producers have managed to input pricing info correctly, you'll be able to pick one up for $380 sometime in the future.<br />

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/01/idc-tablet-share-q1-2013/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="IDC Android topped tablet share in Q1 at 57 percent, Apple still the top manufacturer " data-src-height="240" data-src-width="620" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/idc-tablets-q1-2013-1-1367436365.jpg" /></a></p>

<p>We were expecting a changing of the guard among tablets given the rise of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/05/idc-tablet-shipments-Q3-2012/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">several competitors</a> throughout in 2012, and we've seen just that in IDC's market share estimates for the first quarter of 2013. The research firm shows Android having almost reversed the share it held a year ago, claiming the top spot at 56.5 percent; Apple's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/23/apple-posts-q2-2013-earnings/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">huge spike</a> in year-over-year iPad sales wasn't enough to keep it from dipping to 39.6 percent. Microsoft's estimated performance tells a more complex story, however. Its second quarter of Windows 8 and RT sales involved a big year-to-year jump as well, but it was also starting largely from scratch -- the combined Windows platform was still tiny at 3.7 percent.</p>

<p>The pecking order remained mostly the same among individual manufacturers, although the charts here explain just why OS share shifted so much in the winter. While Apple remained comfortably in front with its 39.6 percent, just about every rival made a dent: Samsung, ASUS, Amazon and Microsoft all gained at least a small amount, even if no one manufacturer posed a major threat. IDC is providing shipping numbers that don't necessarily reflect the on-the-ground sales, especially when everyone beyond Apple declines to report official numbers, but they suggest that tablets like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/nexus-7-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nexus 7</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/05/microsoft-surface-pro-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Surface Pro</a> have found at least a small audience.</p>

<p>The latest upgrade to the iPhone and iPad version of Amazon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/04/amazon-kindle-for-ios-adds-x-ray/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Kindle reading app</a> brings a bunch of new features aimed at blind and visually impaired users. At the top of the list is the ability to read aloud 1.8 million Kindle Store titles, with help from Apple's VoiceOver technology. The update also brings better library and book navigation and search, as well as features like notes, highlights, bookmarks, font size, background color and brightness. Standard Kindle features like X-Ray, End Actions and sharing via Facebook and Twitter are also made more accessible through the update. Amazon's promised a similar update for non-iOS versions of the app at some point in the future -- in the meantime, a full list of new features can be found in a press release after the break.</p>

<p>Amazon has started rolling out a new version of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/lovefilm+instant/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Lovefilm Instant</a> on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/playstation3/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Playstation 3</a> in the UK and Germany, with new countries and platforms to follow. The update brings a better search engine and recommendations, along with a new Watchlist feature and revised UI that lets you track content currently being watched via the homepage. Viewers in the launch countries will also notice another welcome change: they can finally watch TV and movies in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/31/lovefilm-introduces-hd-streaming/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">HD</a> on the PS3. <p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/25/Amazon-q1-2013-earnings/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/amazon-jeff-bezos-340.jpg" /></a></p><p> Amazon's Q1 for 2013 was a bit of a mixed bag. The company saw net income drop 37 percent <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/26/amazon-q1-2012-earnings-net-income-down-sales/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">year-over-year</a> to $82 million, though its net sales were up 22 percent to $16.1 billion. The sequential drop in profits was small (from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/29/amazon-calendar-q4-2012-earnings/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">$97 million</a>) considering Q4's holiday inflation. Product sales accounted for the vast majority of that income, with its various branded services only pulling in $2.8 billion. The United States is still the company's biggest market, with $9.4 billion of that sales revenue coming from here. The rest of the globe only accounted for $6.7 billion, though media was particularly strong in those markets. Media sales were $2.55 billion over seas and just $2.51 billion in the US. Looking over the numbers, its clear that Amazon has a steady stream of reliable income that is continuing to grow. In fact, the company expects another quarter of double-digit growth year-over-year for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/26/amazon-q2-2012-earnings-net-income-down-96-percent-to-7mm-net/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Q2</a>. But, as we've learned, there are also huge expenses involved. And guidance for next quarter tops out at $10 million in net income -- and a potential loss of up to $340 million (though such a steep fall seems unlikely). Unfortunately, there are no specific numbers for its various kindle products buried in the report (which you'll find after the break), but hopefully the 5PM ET call will offer a comprehensive breakdown. Updates from which you'll find after the break.</p>

All the pieces seem to in place certainly, between the retailer's robust online video offerings both premium and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/06/amazon-prime-new-monthly-price/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Prime</a> (not to mention a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/19/amazon-pilots/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">slew of original material</a>), as well as some experience in the hardware department through various Kindle devices. According to <em>Bloomberg</em> <em>Businessweek</em>, the company will be doing just that this fall -- that information, incidentally, comes from three anonymous sources. The device is said to let users stream web content to a set, not unlike Apple's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/11/apple-tv-smaller-a5-processor/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">own offering</a> in the space. The site even went so far as suggesting "Kindle TV" as a name, though that seems to be <em>Businessweek</em>'s own wishful thinking.</p><p> <strong>Update:</strong> We reached out to Amazon and unsurprisingly received, the customary "no comment."</p>

Microsoft's app-based second screen solution has been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/06/xbox-smartglass-for-ios/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">available on iOS</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/11/xbox-smartglass-nabs-update-now-supports-7-inch-or-larger-table/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Android</a> since late last fall, but despite sharing a kernel with Google's OS, hadn't been made dispensable to Kindle Fire / <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/19/amazon-kindle-fire-hd-8.9-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Fire HD</a> owners until now. The app's been configured to scale natively on Amazon's <em>refreshed</em> tablet line, letting users navigate their Xbox 360 remotely, push and pull streaming content, as well as access achievements, messaging and Xbox Music. So if it's the living room of the future you're after, you might want to hit up the source and make that free download your own.</p>

Most of these are the Windows 8- and RT-based tablets that didn't quite make the cut for the holidays, and we're launching our 2013 spring tablet buyer's guide with a dedicated Windows section to accommodate a distinct and rapidly filling category. Just be careful before you commit to a purchase, wherever your allegiances lie: Mobile World Congress brought us tablets that haven't quite shipped yet, like the FonePad and Galaxy Note 8.0. (We've included a heads-up in those situations where waiting a few weeks, or months, may be wisest.) As chaotic as spring can be, our guide might just provide some kind of stability if you're shopping for your next slate.</p>

The company has already conquered the US, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/24/kindle-japan-pre-orders/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Japan</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/12/kindle-paperwhite-uk/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">UK</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/23/amazons-new-kindles-now-available-in-canada-paperwhite/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Canada</a>, and has even launched an ebook assault on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/13/amazon-releases-kindle-apps-and-e-books-into-china/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Chinese</a> mainland. Now it looks like the online giant has settled on its next target: Russia. According to a report in the Russian edition of <em>Forbes</em>, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/28/amazon-acquires-goodreads-kindle-recommendation-engine/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Goodreads</a> purchaser has just set up shop in the former Soviet heartland and brought on Arkady Vitrouk (former CEO of ABC-Atticus) as director of Kindle Content for the region. Amazon hasn't officially confirmed the move, but Vitrouk has updated his LinkedIn profile to reflect his new ebook-focused title. Scouring the professional social network reveals listings for a few other Kindle-related positions in the country, including a number of jobs focused on content acquisition -- an important step in the lead up to launch. There's no indication that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/08/amazon-prime-canada-no-instant-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">free two-day shipping</a> or streaming video will be coming to Russia anytime soon, but the ereader market seems as good a place as any to start a quest for dominance.</p>
